a character in “The Multiverse”, as played by Alexander Hamilton

Description

The first features a typical human viewer will notice about Basil’s physical appearance are his cat ears and tail. The ears are dark gray on the outside, and the fluffy fur on the inside is nearly white. They swivel and turn to catch sound, or express very strong emotions. Basil’s tail is large and fluffy. It hangs about a foot and a half from the ground; the fur is gray as well and stripped with bands of darker gray. It is also a very obvious indicator of emotion, and the amount of hair makes it almost resemble a raccoon tail.

Basil is a very short man, standing only about 5’5”, but he is well proportioned, with a sleek build suiting his feline characteristics. His face leans more towards pretty than handsome, and there is sharpness to his features. A pair of pince-nez sit atop is delicate nose. Basil’s eyes are light blue-green, with slit shaped pupils. He keeps his hair in a neat ponytail that reaches between his shoulder blades; the hair shares his tail’s gray stripped tabby pattern.

The fashion of Basil’s homeland is best described as a combination of Victorian and Gregorian styles, and his wardrobe naturally reflects that. Not being a showy person, Basil usually wears black, dark green, navy, or dark gray clothing. A typical outfit would consist of a black vest over a white silk shirt, a plain black dress coat with long tails, black pants, and a cravat. He always carries a silver pocket watch and walking stick with him.

Basil moves with feline grace, with perfect, practiced posture. It is a rare day when there is an unseemly wrinkle on Basil’s clothes, or a hair escapes his ponytail. He usually has a severe expression, as if he is looking down on everyone he meets, but he always maintains eye contact, enunciates clearly, and speaks at just the right volume.

Personality

Basil Pemberton Padmore is a serious man. Very serious. He does not like shenanigans, lollygagging, hijinks, or any of that other nonsense young people these days like to engage in. In his learned opinion, people should use appropriate language, address their superiors politely, say ‘please’ and ‘thank you’, keep their nails filed evenly, stick their pinky out when drinking tea, and always keep their clothing cleaned and ironed. In short, Basil is a buzz kill in every sense of the term.

To Basil, politeness in all its forms is extremely important. Showing politeness indicates good character and displays respect to those around you. Those who do not obey the all powerful rules of politeness, to Basil, are passively insulting those they interact with. Despite his usual politeness, Basil is not shy about correct such flagrantly inappropriate behavior wherever and whenever he encounters it. It is a part of his educating nature.

In his personal life, order is king. Everything minute of every day must be scheduled, so as not to be wasted. His bookcases at home are all organized alphabetically, and it has been years since he lost something. He actually has a notebook where he has written down a complete list of everything he owns, and the location where it is stored. Cleanliness is also high on his list of priorities, and one will be hard pressed to find any smudges of dirt on the person of Basil Pemberton Padmore.

Of course, reality sometimes intrudes on Basil’s orderly life, and it is never pretty. Chaos and filth which he fails to control can make him extremely upset, sometimes to the point of tears. He is not personally weak, however, and will do battle with the forces of bad behavior unflinchingly. His disapproving stare has been known to force even the most wild of delinquents into submission.

Despite his high strung tendencies, Basil is not unfriendly, per say. He will ask you about your day, and offer assistance if you need it. Amazingly, Basil has been known to relax somewhat in the presence of close, trusted friends. Emotional life, however, is not Basil’s strong point. He handles his own emotional issues by trying to control the world around him utterly, and he never knows what to do when someone opens up to him (Usually he tells them to keep a stiff upper lip and hands them a handkerchief).

  • Retractable claws and fangs.
  • Enhanced smell, hearing, and eyesight.

History

Basil was born into a very large family, the third child out of eleven. His poor mother was overwhelmed, and never had much control over the family. His father did no consider taking care of the family his job, nor was he very good at telling kids what to do. Basil, a quiet boy who did not like chaos or his siblings’ antics, was very unhappy.

One day, his overstressed mother went to visit family, leaving her offspring in the care of their incompetent father. Things got crazier and crazier, until Basil finally snapped. Within one week, at the tender age of thirteen, he gained control over the entire family, as if it was a rowdy classroom. His mother was delighted at the orderliness and obedience she found on her return and Basil became her unofficial right hand from then on.

Basil knew he wanted to be a school teacher from an early age, and began practicing for the career early on. He was a dedicated student who valued learning, and wanted his less studious classmates to gain the benefits of an education. At the age of twenty, Basil was an assistant to a teacher, and two years later he was handling classrooms of his own.

Soon, he gained a reputation as a terrifying but effective teacher of young children. His classes were always quiet, and every lesson ended just moments before the bell was rung. Despite gesturing and threatening with a switch all the time, most of his pupils never felt its sting. Though never shy about making threats, Basil never enjoyed inflicting physical violence, and his strict classroom manner was not a reflection of contempt for children. Seeing a child succeed in their education is one of his greatest goals and pleasures.

A fruitful social life has never been one of Basil’s priorities, and that is reflected in his relatively small circle of friends. Most of his companions are much older than him, and share his strict mindset on social behavior. He is still considered the de facto head of the family, and most still call on him when they are in need of help. Basil has never actually had a romantic relationship, but recently started to developing feelings for a gentlemanly librarian that shares many of his interests. Basil is very fond of gentlemen.

Basil Pemberton Padmore , who had been quietly sipping at his glass of ice water, could not help raising an eyebrow when an army of men crowded around nearby. Hopefully they wouldn't be too rowdy.

worked his way through a folder of papers resting on the counter, methodically marking them with pen. He reached out to grab his glass and brought it to his lips, but only small chunks of ice were left. Basil craned his neck to see if he could find that Kisa girl who worked here. "Excuse me, Miss, could I have another glass of water please?"

Basil Pemberton Padmore closed the folder and leaned back in his seat, sighing. That was enough grading for now. Time to get more comfortable. In the blink of an eye, Basil had been replaced by a gray tabby cat resting on the counter, curled up in a fluffy ball. The cat-Basil leaned over the glass of water and lapped at the liquid's surface.

Basil Pemberton Padmore 's ears swiveled to catch more of the conversation coming from where that Kisa girl. It made his whiskers twitch. Highly inappropriate. He looked up from his water and gave the group a disapproving stare.

Basil Pemberton Padmore still in his pure cat form, Basil bristled indignantly (literally), with all of his fur puffing up. Then, he spoke with a human's voice out of a cat's body. "Unfortunately, I do not have the supernatural ability to control what I do and do not hear. Your conversation with those two young ladies has been very course and distasteful."

Basil Pemberton Padmore addressed Kimi first. "Hmph. How rude. A young lady like yourself, Miss, should spend time for with more gentlemanly fellows. Others are more apt to take advantage."

Basil shifted his attention to Renee Blackstar Delacroix. "And you, Madam, need to calm down. You have clearly had to much to drink."

Basil Pemberton Padmore didn't have much time to react. "Mreow?!" He leaped off the counter and darted between chairs, under tables, and behind legs. He would have pointed out how utterly psychotic this behavior was, if he hadn't been running for his life. In this form he was, at least for the moment, small and fast enough to avoid getting hit-barely.

Basil Pemberton Padmore was terrified. What in the world was going on? He'd just been minding his own business, drinking his water, and now after a minor disagreement a woman was trying to murder him? And wasn't anyone going to help him? Everyone here was insane.

Finally, Basil managed to leap onto a the top of a high shelf, momentarily out of reach. "What are....listen, you don't have to do this! Please. Can't we talk this out?"

Basil Pemberton Padmore could swear he saw his life flash before his eyes. Panicked, he leapt straight into the path of Renee's right katana. He closed his eyes, sure it would land...but the next thing Basil knew, he had fallen to the floor, unharmed, and was surrounded by fire, and...there was something all around him. Dazed, he rested a paw against the invisible field of force.

Basil Pemberton Padmore was confused again. Magical forces kept appearing around him, and one, he was sure, had touched his consciousness. He was uncertain whether he was being protected or entrapped or attacked, or even by who.

Basil Pemberton Padmore leapt out of the way again, but he could feel some strange, pulling force, almost like gravity...It pushed Renee back enough for Basil to have time to move to safety. But he couldn't say locked in a ring of fire forever. Mustering all of the strength in his little, feline body, Basil turned around and jumped up as high as he could, managing to clear the ring of fire.

Basil Pemberton Padmore was now floating. "What the-?" He wriggled, trying to escape from the strange force that was holding him. The next thing he knew, he was zipping through the air. For a moment, Basil was sure he would be flung by the force into the wall and break every bone in his body...but when he stopped, he was on a table. On the ceiling. Near an elf. "What? Did you...?"

Basil Pemberton Padmore 's wide, blue-green eyes observed this new man intently. He seemed calm, collected. "You saved my life," Basil gasped, his little body shuddering from the adrenaline. "Thank you."

He could still hear Renee yelling about him down below. "Cat". It made sense to call him that, since he was in that form, but...yes, he hadn't addressed her until he had been in this form. Perhaps she didn't know what his other shape was, and would not recognize it. Abruptly, with almost no transition at all, a well dressed man with a pair of cat ears on his head and a fluffy gray tail had replaced the cat, sitting on the edge of the table.

Basil Pemberton Padmore 's heart was still pounding, but the fear was beginning to give way to fury. This woman was actually trying to blame HIM? As if being, at the worst, a little rude was the same as attempted murder and enslavement? The fur on his ears and tail stood up. "These...people..."

Basil swallowed, and turned to Adaris. "Will you help me? Please?"

Basil Pemberton Padmore edged closer to Aldaris, and reached out, grabbing his sleeve like a child afraid of losing his mother. He was a school teacher. How was this happening?

"No," he said to Ikiros. "How dare you? She tried to kill me for telling her to calm down. I owe her nothing, an she owes me more than she could ever pay back. Monsters."

Basil Pemberton Padmore really could not believe what he was hearing. He stared at Ikiros like he had too heads. "Because she was drunk or having a psychotic episode, it is my fault she attacked me? And I supposed, if a woman flirts with a man, she is to blame if he rapes her?"
