At six years old, Bethany Jane may seem like any other child. She has stuffed animals, wears pretty clothing and loves lollipops and candy. However, there is one morbid fact about this child that will taint her mind forever. This little girl lives in an orphanage, having lost her mother, a fifteen year old runaway, at birth.

Whatever it was that has hurt this child in such a manner, she won't reveal it. Therapists, psychiatrists, counsellors and many, many more people have tried to figure out what is wrong with Beth. The only thing that they've been able to determine is that the problem seemed to have been triggered when her kitten, 'Kitten', died.

Unfortunately... Bethany doesn't seem to be able to comprehend what 'death' really means, and she still carries the carcass of the fluffy cat with her wherever she goes...

So begins...

The child spent a few long, curious moments standing outwith the entrance to the bar before she thought to enter, drawn in by the heat and those speaking. Curiosity killed the cat, after all.

Speaking of dead cats... There was one cradled in the sweet little girl's arms.

"Look, Kitten, it's nice and warm here... Let's see if we can get you some milk, Kitten."

Bethany Jane had, undoubtedly, arrived in Gambit's Bar, dead kitten, pretty little bow and all.

Bethany Jane went over to the bar and placed Kitten upon a stool, carefully curling him up so that he appeared to be sleeping all by himself. Next, she went about picking herself up onto the stool beside Kitten.

"E'cuse me!" she asked, leaning up onto the bar counter. "E'cuse me, can I have some milk for my kitty, please?"

Bethany Jane softly petted the dead kitten still curled up on the seat beside the stool she was sitting upon. The six year old girl caught sight of Parson's rat and promptly covered Kitten's staring eyes. "Don't look, Kitten, there's a rat..." she whispered to the unmoving animal.

Bethany Jane scooped Kitten up into her arms, shaking her head at Parson. "Kitten isn't dead... He's sleeping! Be quiet, or you'll wake him up!" the six year old informed Parson with a hushed voice. "He's grouchy when he wakes up."

"I'm not lying!" she retorted angrily. "Kitten isn't dead, he's sleeping!" And here came the tears... Of course, deep down inside, the little girl knew the kitten was never going to wake up, but she couldn't understand it on a conscious level quite yet. Beth still hoped that her Mummy would arrive to take her home, but that wasn't at all possible either! "Go away!"

With Kitten in her arms and the height equal to that of one of the stools, it wasn't particularly easy for Bethany to get off of her seat in order to escape from Parson, this cruel older boy who tormented her like the other kids at the orphanage.

After a moment of swaying, the stool itself merely tipped over, depositing its load of cat and child upon the floor with a bump. That, of course, prompted the flood of tears to start over scraped hands and knees and for Kitten to remain as still as ever, unaffected by the fall.

Bethany Jane only continued to cry, having picked herself up off the floor and rescued her cat from Parson's foot. Kitten was held under one arm, dead limbs akimbo and head twisted to the side, whilst the opposite hand rubbed at her eyes as she stood, sobbing.

"He says Kitten's dead!"

To Bethany, death did not exist. It was simply a long nap - her Mummy was napping, Kitten was napping, and the nice caretaker at the orphanage was napping. They all had to wake up a some point. She peered at Sanina Lessard, waiting to see if she would do just what Parson and the caretakers at 'home' had done, or whether she would be a kindred spirit.

Bethany Jane nodded with a watery smile (that had arisen from a glare sent in Parson's direction) as she was helped onto the stool once again.

"I'm not stupid," she said, sticking her tongue out at the other child before holding Kitten up to Sanina. "See, he's just sleeping!" she insisted. "I can hear him purring..."

Imaginations ran wild with this child, a dead animal her best friend, animated and very much alive within Bethany's mind.

"He's sleeping... Shh..."

Bethany Jane seemed to just ignore Parson now, for that was what the nice lady had told her to do. "Old lady gave him to me three weeks ago..." she murmured with a nod, wiping her eyes on the hem of her dress before setting her feet swinging back and forth. "But then the caretakers tried to tak'im away from me!"

That would be the reason the small child was no longer in the children's home, anyway.

Bethany Jane squeaked when Parson began shaking her stool, clinging to the seat for dear life as the older boy attempted to have her fall right off again - one of her knees was still bleeding from the last time it had happened, although she hadn't even noticed it. Like most children, however, as soon as she did notice it, it would immediately become very painful.

"Kitten!" The child was ecstatic to find that her cat was now awake, and drew him into her arms for a tight cuddle. "You're awake! Bad Kitten, sleeping too long!"

Bethany Jane had Kitten tucked up under her arm, as was customary for the child, and the other hand in Sanina's. Beth still appeared to be half-asleep, considering the way she hid her eyes against her newly adopted caretaker's hand, but surely she'd wake up in a very short amount of time.

"I'm hungry, Sanina," Bethany informed the older woman with a pout in her direction. "Tummy rumbles..."

Bethany Jane seemed appeased to hear that she was going to get something to eat - hopefully it would be something nice, too, because she was starving!

"'Nina, m'hungry!" she whined, tugging on the woman's hand when they appeared to have stopped. "Kitten needs milk!"

Bethany Jane spent a moment considering it - what hadn't she had in a long, long time?

"Pancakes? Can I have pancakes, please? Kitten wants some'fing to drink, too, 'cause he's hungry!" the child enthused, hauling up her cat with a smile. "Let's have pancakes and cat food!"

Bethany Jane shook her head, scowling down at Kitten as if it was the undead animal's fault that her newest 'friend' hated her. "No... He's a big smelly!" Bethany insisted, sniffling. "A big, fat smell -"

The girl squeaked as Darren Xelfiarc, the Dealer of Death, insisted upon firing rounds towards her adopted caretaker.

Bethany Jane started to cry once again - she was hungry, still half asleep and now there were mean people firing guns and buzzy insects everywhere!

The child screamed when the wasps started to sting the soft flesh of her arms and face. Kitten was dropped to the ground whilst Bethany swatted tearfully at the magnitude of angry wasps around her.

Due to her focus on the horrid insects, Darren Xelfiarc The dealer of death went almost unnoticed - he certainly didn't help with the child's hysteria, at any rate.

Bethany Jane clung to Sanina as the woman attempted to salvage her safety, still crying as loudly as was possible. She could feel wasps buzzing in her hair, stinging at her skin, and it wasn't a nice feeling it all.

Her bawling wouldn't be stopping any time soon, that was for certain.

Having been stung multiple times yesterday by the horde of angry wasps (that were apparently big enough to both shoot at and slice up with a sword), the child really shouldn't have been up yet. However, she had woken up, groggy and sore, and Sanina hadn't been there.

This prompted Bethany to search for the woman, Kitten in her arms, and that involved climbing, step by step, down the stairs.

"'Nina!" Bethany called midway down the staircase, rather hoping that if the vampire was present, she would make her presence known. "'Nina!"

Bethany Jane placed Kitten on the step she had been on, informing him with a stern voice that he was to 'stay put' before hastening her pace to reach Sanina. It took a couple of minutes longer than it perhaps should have for such an energetic child, but Bethany was incredibly tired and felt rather horrid.

"'Nina, you weren't there," Beth accused with a pout as she held her arms up to be lifted. "You left."

Bethany Jane stared at Dorian for a moment. "Door-reen? Doreen? Hiya, Doreen. Doreen is a girls' name, you know. Aren't you a boy? He has to be a boy if he's uncle... Uncle Doreen?"

Beth clung to one of Sanina's hands, tugging as soon as her attention was diverted from the child.

"'Nina, I'm scratchy! It's all sore and icky... Don't feel nice."
