At six years old, Bethany Jane may seem like any other child. She has stuffed animals, wears pretty clothing and loves lollipops and candy. However, there is one morbid fact about this child that will taint her mind forever. This little girl lives in an orphanage, having lost her mother, a fifteen year old runaway, at birth.

Whatever it was that has hurt this child in such a manner, she won't reveal it. Therapists, psychiatrists, counsellors and many, many more people have tried to figure out what is wrong with Beth. The only thing that they've been able to determine is that the problem seemed to have been triggered when her kitten, 'Kitten', died.

Unfortunately... Bethany doesn't seem to be able to comprehend what 'death' really means, and she still carries the carcass of the fluffy cat with her wherever she goes...

So begins...

Bethany Jane sniggered as Parson talked to the cat. She wasn't quite sure about Christina -- she didn't know who she was, or why she was talking to Parson, or even why Parson was talking back, but that could be figured out another day.

"I'll go home if kitty gets to come," she agreed with a nod, one hand moving to lightly hold on to said cat's tail. "He's snuggly."

Bethany Jane leant against Logan's side with a vague expression as she watched Parson and Christina talk. She wasn't at all interested in what they were saying by this point, far too ready to take a nap after all of that excitement (stalking Parson, seeing Raiivyn, meeting the kitty... it all added up) started to wear thin.

"I'm tired," the girl informed Parson with a hazy, disgruntled look. "Where's dolly?" She didn't recognise at all that the cat might have been offering to carry her - it wasn't the norm thing, really.

Apparently, Bethany didn't even have to try to get onto the large cat's back, for he had done a perfectly good job of getting her up there himself.

"Like a baby horse," she commented idly as she tucked her dolly underneath an arm and held on to Logan with a sleepy yawn. "Logan the baby horse-cat."

That seemed like a reasonable attempt at a description, and so Beth left it at that and tapered off into mumbled silence. Really, today had just been too exciting.

It had to be said that Bethany had never had such fun with a companion before, let alone an animal - at the home, she'd had few friends due to the age differences between her and the other kids, and even Parson had been cruel when they first met before the boy changed his tune and decided that only he could upset her.

As it was, she had now found a constant friend (or he had found her) and she wasn't at all interested in losing him. Logan was a friend to treasure and, as she crawled under some shrubbery and giggled away at the various bugs she dispersed from their hiding spots, Bethany was all too happy to indulge her friend in playing games - not that it was a bother to her!

Finally settling beneath a low branch between some form of fern and a rather large rock, Bethany peered beneath the leaves and smiled. She'd never be found it was far too dark! She could barely see herself!

The young girl was quite certain that, although she could hear his purring, Logan was at a complete loss as to where she was -- and then squealed with unbound joy at the feline's appearance, most amused at how suddenly the large animal could leap over and squash an entire shrub! With a moment's hesitation, the child scrambled up and unceremoniously bestowed upon Logan a hug. Her short arms wrapped around the male's neck and clung there, snuggles and cuddles the main point of such movement.

Childish amusement aside, Bethany Jane was growing tired off such games, the repetition of running, hiding and consequently finding one another weighing on her mind as she showed some form of affection for her friend.

"Logan," Beth cooed. "Silly kitty - what if a thorn got in your paw?"

The girl pouted at the cat, a look of confusion passing her face as she tilted her head in order to match his movement. "Thorns are bad," she reiterated with a firm nod as she scrubbed at her face with the back of her hand to rid herself of any dampness left from the lick. "I wish I could be a kitty! I'd play with string and chase butterflies and everything," Beth stated, tone wistful and hopeful at once. "And I'd clean my whiskers." That was clearly a very important part of cat-life to Beth, for whatever reason. "Do you wish you were a person, Logan? Do kitties wish they were persons?"

She wouldn't know, being a person herself - if that was what you could call her, barely human as she was. Still, this pondering was accompanied by Beth's careful stroking of the cat's forehead. "Kitties don't get juice, so maybe kitties do want to be persons..."

Once again, the child's short attention-span appeared to have missed or overlooked the motion to 'climb aboard,' as it were. Cats simply were not horses!

Trailing after Parson with a far less excited look on her face was young Bethany. Of course, it wasn't that she didn't love spending time with her brother that had her so upset - she was just quite hungry and feeling rather irritable.

"Don't know," came the uncharacteristic grumble from the child standing to the right of Parson, hugging her doll to her chest as if it were the only thing in the world that could possibly comprehend her troubles. "What do you want to do?" Maybe he would want to play dollies or tell a story?

Humming a mild agreement seemed the extent of Bethany's thoughts towards the ideas posed by her adopted brother. While school did leave them with too much time and nothing to fill it with, Beth was quite happy without the distraction of learning sums and words. She'd much rather play with Kitten and her dolls.

"I like dollies," she reminded Parson as she took her juice, and that was all she spoke before she dove into the task of consuming the blood.

Bethany Jane licked her lips, unconsciously tilting her head to look at her brother. "Laundry?" She hadn't a clue what that was. "What's laundry?" It was such a fun word, though. "Laundry."

When the juice was all but a drop on her tongue, Beth held the container out to Parson and smiled. "More?"

Bethany Jane had quirked an eyebrow at the strange ticking audible in the bar, and had turned large eyes towards the supply room's doorway when the strange new woman appeared.

She hugged her glass to herself, shyly looking at her juice as she was introduced. "Hello." Peeking up at Timo from beneath her eyelashes, Beth drank slowly, finding that when she wasn't very, very hungry it was far more fun to savour than to scoff.

With another sweet smile directed towards Timo, Bethany hummed. "Nice to meet you too, 'Mo." The child thoroughly agreed with Parson's statements. Well, all but one!

"I am not a baby! I'm big!" Bethany drew herself to her full height (all of three feet and seven inches) and scowled between Parson and Timo. "I'm not a baby!"

Saying that, she was a bit too young to understand what the consequences of private school would be. Which was a good thing, really, because Parson likely wouldn't enjoy a tantrum.

Bethany's scowl developed into an all too happy grin at Timo's correction and Parson's quick backtracking. And then the doll intensified the smile. Easily pleased, was Beth. Her original doll was tucked under an arm and the new one held between her little fingers.

"I like dressing up," Bethany informed the pair with a serious tone that only kids could pull off with a straight face. "I'm a princess. Parson has tiaras. Parson, you should dress up like a princess too! And 'Mo can be a princess!"

"I don't want more juice, I want you to be a princess, Parson!" Here came the aforementioned fit. "It's not fair if you make me wear dresses and you don't!"

The whole 'liking to dress up' thing went completely out of Bethany's mind when it came to throwing tantrums. As with most children, the easiest way to throw a tantrum was to just lose all logic and claim silly things to guilt the others into doing what they wanted.

"You're being mean to me! I'm going to tell 'Nina and 'Nina will make you dress up like a princess," she informed, a little hand balled up into a smaller fist around her dolly's arm with a cup clutched in the other.

Bethany was all geared up to demand that Parson dress up properly or face the sight of her bawling her eyes out (and to ask what 'heathen' meant) when Timo's shedding drew her attention completely.

The child stared, wide-eyed and wordless, and searched for a plausible explanation.

"Is that a dress up?"

Soon enough, little Bethany Jane and her quite dead kitten entered the bar. After closing the door behind herself, the small child made a beeline for her brother and, on an unconscious level, the 'juice' present beside him.

"Pa'son! Juice?" Kittens was dumped on a stool on Parson's left. Bethany then went to Parson's right and held her arms up. Clearly, she wanted help to get on to the stool.

Bethany Jane grinned all too happily and, with chubby, grabby hands, picked up a glass of the blood in order to dig in to the meal. Kittens, on the other stool, sat unmoving.

Well, he was dead, what did you expect from the decaying animal?

"Par... son?" The word was bisected by a sip of juice. "Can we play princesses later?"

First glass finished, Beth replaced it upon the counter and was just about to try demanding that her brother dress up properly this time when the stranger started playing music. Frowning, the child leant to see exactly he using.

"What's that?" the child asked, swinging her feet back and forth idly as she queried the instrument's name.

Bethany squealed with absolute delight as soon as a slight flicker of movement caught her eye. Kittens was standing, head lolling in a rather disconcerting manner although it made no difference to the child.

Hopping down from her stool, Beth twirled past her big brother and went to Kittens, whose body was by this time twitching from side to side in some sick representation of frolicking dance.

"Kittens is awake!"

Idly swaying along with Kittens (although completely off-beat; Beth wasn't such a musical child as she was an imaginative, albeit mentally fractured one), the little girl laughed and giggled. The cat had been 'asleep' for so long that Beth had almost forgotten what it looked like to see him move! And now look at him!

"He's happy, Pa'son! He's dancing!"

Bethany Jane stared at Parson as if he'd just started singing about tearing his own leg and beating Kittens to death with it.

"Pa'son, what are you doing?" the little girl asked, stopping her absent swaying to frown up at the taller boy. "Why are you singing? What people..?"

With a shake of her little head, Bethany folded her arms. She'd never heard Parson sing before, and sudden changes in his behaviour disconcerted her.

"Why are you dancing? We're not playing princesses yet!"

Click-click. Click-click. Click-click.

Bethany Jane was, as per usual, in a frilly, elaborate dress fit for a princess of her imagination and wonder. Coupled with this dress was a pair of very small shoes with the tiniest of delicate bows on the top of each pearly-white foot. Clutched to her chest was a wide-eyed, blonde-haired doll with curly hair and a pair of dungarees coupled with a tiara perched atop her head.

The doll's dress made little to no sense, but such was the logic of a small child. As long as she liked it, nothing was wrong with it. And now, as she click-click-clicked her way downstairs, the little girl was determined to show off her doll and her dress to the small world she could envision.

The bar was the best and only place to start.

Bethany Jane grinned at the sight of her big brother. As soon as he waved to her, she hastened to head over to him and held up her doll as if offering it for evaluation. The wide, gapped smile bestowed upon Parson only intensified as the small child dipped into an incredibly clumsy curtsey before she tucked her dolly under her arm and reached for some juice with the free hand.

Unfortunately, Beth was not quite tall enough to reach the counter without aid, and so she hopped futilely for a beat or two, and then pouted grumpily at her brother.

Surely he did these things just to upset her!

Bethany Jane squealed happily as she was aided (indeed, a child's mind was quite this fickle) onto the high seat and she shuffled herself there until she was certain that she was comfortable. Finally sated, Bethany placed her doll in her lap and carefully took the bottle from her brother.

"Pa'son!" She giggled after a few sips. "You having juice too? Looky! My shoes have bows!" The little girl kicked her feet. "See? Bows!"
