At six years old, Bethany Jane may seem like any other child. She has stuffed animals, wears pretty clothing and loves lollipops and candy. However, there is one morbid fact about this child that will taint her mind forever. This little girl lives in an orphanage, having lost her mother, a fifteen year old runaway, at birth.

Whatever it was that has hurt this child in such a manner, she won't reveal it. Therapists, psychiatrists, counsellors and many, many more people have tried to figure out what is wrong with Beth. The only thing that they've been able to determine is that the problem seemed to have been triggered when her kitten, 'Kitten', died.

Unfortunately... Bethany doesn't seem to be able to comprehend what 'death' really means, and she still carries the carcass of the fluffy cat with her wherever she goes...

So begins...

Bethany Jane wandered awkwardly down the stairs whilst rubbing at her sleep-addled eyes.

"Pa'son!"

Once again, she'd have to stick to Parson's side if she wanted to go anywhere...

"Pa'son!"

"I had a bad dream, Pa'son," she mumbled, moving over to instinctively hug the older boy she was growing to consider as a brother. "Had a bad dream."

Not that she'd get much comfort from Parson, anyway...

Bethany Jane looked up at Parson with a pout - he was mean... but he did let her cuddle him, so that was nice. She frowned at the glare, following its path to Hush.

Immediately, Bethany went over to the cat and knelt down beside it pet it. "Kitty!"

Bethany Jane shook her head, happily scooping up the cat. "Don't put the kitty to sleep, Pa'son!" Sleeping was very, very bad. "He's cuddly..." she informed the older boy. "He likes me!"

The child's brows knit together in clear discontent before looking down, with no small amount of shock, at the cat as if it had burned her.

"Kitty won't run away? Will you? You will!" Beth accused, dropping the cat suddenly and clambering to her feet so that she could run away -

And right into Viktor Vetrano. Whoopsies.

Bethany Jane squeaked, staring up at the man that had prevented her fall. What was he talking about?

Shouldn't... what are you doing... not a place for girls...

Bethany burst into tears, certain that he was telling her off for simply existing in the room.

Bethany Jane turned away from Viktor to cling to Parson as soon as she realised he was present. "Pa'son, he told me off!" she cried, face buried against his stomach. "Mean stranger," the kid added.

Sure, Parson terrified her, but he was constant and, like Sanina, he was her new family. With this in mind, the child clung for her life.

Bethany Jane rubbed at the area Parson had smacked, and mimicked his word with amusement. "Ass!" she grumbled, scowling (although it looked more like she was trying to close her eyes). "Ass, ass, ass!"

Apparently, Beth had never heard of that particular word before.

"Ass!"

Bethany Jane nodded enthusiastically - Parson was going to be nice!

"Tell me some new words, ass!" she prompted her 'brother'. "Tell me new words, please, please, please, please!"

Beth looked mischievous and awestruck by all of these new words. At Parson's suggestion, she happily skipped over to the 'mean man', Viktor, and stared up at him with wide, innocent eyes and said...

"You're a bitch!"

"Pa'son told me!" she announced, pointing back at her 'brother'. "Pa'son taught me the word! It's a good word, isn't it?" she asked before giggling, crouching to the floor and covering her face to hide her laughter when Parson.

It didn't work very well.

"Hee hee hee!"

Bethany Jane blinked up between her fingers at the candy before extending a hand to take it with a wide smile.

"Thank you, bitch!" she enthused, certain that it was just some form of nickname. "Thank you, thank you, thank you!"

Bethany Jane stared at her candy, wondering if she could share it with Parson or not... Best not to ask Parson, of course, he would just take it all... The child placed the candy into her pocket, resolving to ask Sanina later.

"Bastard! Fuck! Asshole!"

Zombies? Hiding under beds? Eating toes?

Once again, Bethany found herself clinging to her 'brother'. That man really was scary!

She proved as such by beginning to cry again.

The first indication of Bethany's presence was not the little girl's scream as she ran down the stairs, nor the thumping of her bare feet on the stairs themselves, but the tiny undead kitten that leapt down into the bar first.

"Pa'son!" the child shrieked, "Pa'son!"

Once again, Bethany had fallen victim to the nightmares that plagued her - today she had dreamt that her mother really was never coming back, that she wasn't just asleep in her box!

"Pa'son!"

Of course, worse than having the nightmare was waking up alone.

Bethany Jane ran to her older 'brother', already hiccuping with sobs and tears streaming down her cheeks. As soon as she reached the boy, she attached herself to him, arms around his waist and head buried against his side as she cried, feeling rather unpleasant, tired and cold.

"Pa'son, I had a bad dream and no one was there!" she wailed.

The child sniffled, tilting her head to stare up at her brother with wide, tearful eyes. "But what if it was real?" she asked, fearful and childishly terrified. "What if it was real and there was something there?"

She had had to come and find Parson, didn't he see?

"Pa'son."

She had tried... She was too busy attempting to worship her brother to notice Sanina straight away, although she did send the woman a mournful look whilst cuddling Parson.

Introduce us to someone? Bethany went from hugging Parson's side to hiding behind his back, as if she were at all shy or scared of this apparent new person that they were all going to see.

"Don't want to," she muttered, wiping at her tear-stained face. "Want to stay here with you."

Bethany Jane followed Parson, clinging to the edge of his shirt and peering around his side as if expecting this new person to bite their heads off within a moment's notice. She tugged at the garment, making a slightly whinging tone.

"Pa'son! Up, Pa'son," she almost ordered - if it hadn't been for the strange look she wore, it certainly would've been an order, but the kid looked like she was about to be thrown off the edge of a cliff for drawing on the wall. "Pa'son!"

Bethany Jane peered at Kaitlyn from behind Parson with the usual wide-eyed stare of an upset, scared child.

"Hi."

Just one near silent syllable was all that the little girl gave out, her small fingers still clutching at her brother's clothing as if it may just safe her from something horrible and strange.

Bethany Jane blinked. Parson didn't want to go with this new woman. That meant.

"I'll go with Auntie!" the little child squawked, moving to hold her arms up to Kaitlynn, waiting to be picked up like a toddler.

If Parson stayed home, Beth could tell the woman all about her sleeping mother without getting in trouble or being told that she was dead!

That sounded like a very nice idea. She could stay with the nice lady, and then they'd do nice things, and nasty Parson (who, despite all he did, she still adored), wouldn't be around to sit on her or put horrid things into her bed!

"I'll stay with you," she unintentionally stage-whispered at Kaitlynn in that way only children could pull off. "I'll stay with you."

Bethany Jane , being six years old and having had her sleep interrupted by horrid nightmares, was naturally still very, very tired when it came down to it.

So, really, it was unsurprising that she had slipped her hand from Kaitlynn's grasp and plonked herself onto the ground with a snore. The poor thing was knackered.

Bethany Jane soon trailed into the bar behind Parson, decked out in the dress he had bought for her and with an overly large Livingston Daisy in her hand. Her hair was the usual mess of curls that had been badly combed by the child, but Bethany Jane didn't care.

All she cared about was following her brother.

"Pa'son!"

Bethany Jane giggled at Parson's response, completely undisturbed by her brother's anger. "S'too high, Pa'son, I can't get up!" she squealed unhappily at the chair. "Can I get a soda, Pa'son, really, really, really?"

She was still struggling to get up onto the seat, but apparently the lure of soda had taken away the upset.
