"I don't drink beer," Braden said when he waved the bartender away.

"I like beer," said Cassidy with a bright smile.

"You're too young, lit'l sister," Braden said to her. He took the beer out of her hand and set it down on the counter.

"And you are no fun, brother," she spat back. She went back to playing a game on her cell phone. Braden was watching the men that just walked into the bar. They seemed a dangerous type. He picked up his coffee and took a sip along the edge. There was a gun under his shirt but he hoped that he wouldn't have to use it.

"So, when is Molly coming back?" asked Cassidy.

"I'm not sure."

"I'm bored. Can we go talk to those people?"

"No."

The Asian men spoke amongst eachother for the most part, some in dialects of Chinese, others in English. A few trying to assure the bartender that he wouldn't be shot just for doing his job at a pace that didn't fit the one, or two, assholes in their group.

"We could do with some music." One of the men said, getting up from where he sat at the bar in search of some kind of jukebox or radio in the bar. He headed towards a machine near the bathrooms, eyes running over Cassidy.

"Redhead white girls, I like 'em." He said, not even trying to lower his voice. He didn't finish making his way towards the machine to see what it was, his attention was focused on Cassidy now. The East Asian gangster headed to the siblings' table, offering a nod to Braden.

"This your girl?" The gangster asked.

Braden allowed the first comment to roll off his shoulder. He instantly did not like the interest that Cassidy was accruing from one of the chinks. The man sipped his coffee again.

"Oh God, no," answered Cassidy. She blushed a pretty pink. "He's my-..."

"I'm her brother and if you want to keep all your teeth you best to be not talkin' to her anymore," Braden suggested; warned.

Cassidy gave the man an apologetic look. There wasn't much she could do about her brother's over protectiveness. She wasn't even allowed to go out into the city on her own. Molly and Bailey were. It wasn't fair.

"Oh, we got us a hardman." The gangster said loudly, drawing the attention of his friends. "You want to get your ass handed to you, kid?" The man asked Braden, "Or, how about you catch a bullet?" He asked rhetorically, opening his suit jacket to show off a pistol.

It was the same man who flashed his gun at the bartender, he was pretty liberal with showing it off. That was clear.

"Marcus, sit down, man." One of the other gangsters said, "Yeah, let it go. The Ash won't be too happy with you starting a gun battle in their turf." Another added.

"Fuck them and fuck this kid. When I'm done making him my bitch I might just fuck the red out of his sister's hair." The belligerent gangster spat, "You'd like that, baby? Me fuckin' the color out of your hair? I'm from Alaska, that's how we do it. Take you back to my igloo."

Braden stood up from his seat and motioned for Cassidy to do the same. The girl was utter flabbergasted that a man would say that to her so openly. She eyes were wide. The girl's innocence was obvious by the horrified look on her face.

"We will just be leaving," Braden said. He was keeping his cool even though he wanted to shove his pistol down the man's throat. No one disrespected his family in the way that he did. This man and his face were never going to be forgotten.

"Let's go," said Braden to his sister. She nodded and let her brother guide her away from the man with a hand on her back. They both made way for the exit.

The gangster moved to intercept the siblings, it was clear that he wanted to push the subject. He wasn't going to let some white boy get away with disrespecting him. Especially not in front of the rest of his gang and Melinda.

"The only way you're leaving here is in the back of an ambulance, kid. I'm just not sure if you'll have a body bag or not yet." The Asian gangster told Braden.

As he spoke Melinda got up from her seat, the rest of her gang moving as well. They followed behind the woman as she began to walk towards Braden and Cassidy.

"Melinda, I'm going to fuck this kid up." The belligerent thug told Melinda, gesturing to Braden. "No. You're not. Sit down." Melinda ordered. "That means now." She added, staring down her dumb muscle. It was clear he didn't want to go, but reluctantly he started moving aside.

Cassidy was starting to be afraid of what may happen soon. She knew her brother and knew that he was capable of a lot of violence. She gripped his arm, silently telling him to not fight.

Braden didn't even glance at his sister. He was staring the chink dead in the eye. He was calm, cool, and collected. Every muscle in his body was preparing to fight to the death.

And that's when Melinda interjected before fists were thrown. Braden leaned over and spit on the floor. Cassidy breathed a sigh of relief.

A pair of pale blue eyes looked at Melinda is a curious way. It was fascinating to Cassidy that she commanded enough power to make that awful man back down. The Asiatic woman didn't know her or her brother but had protected them both.

Cassidy hugged her brother's arm and said in a sweet voice, "Thank you." Braden looked down at his sister disapprovingly.

"You're welcome." Melinda said, pushing the simmering Asian gangster towards the rest of the group. She held up two fingers and a thumb, soon gesturing with the hand towards the exit.

"Stick around and have a drink. One for the road." Melinda said, her men grabbing the asshole of their group and dragging him towards the exit. "Get your words in when you leave. Make him... apologize if you need an apology. I won't do it for him." Melinda said, directing her words towards Braden.

"What would you like to drink?"

Aereth entered the bar and took a moment to survey the room before approaching the bar and having a seat. He'd traveled a great distance and could only think of how thirsty he was. He waited at the bar to be served and checked his wrist, the ship's levels would require only a few hours this time.

"We were just leaving," Braden said. Cassidy's smile fell into some distraught. She looked between her brother and Melina. The girl wanted to stay but Braden was never going to allow her to remain by herself in a bar.

"It was nice to meet you," Cassidy said as her brother guided her to the door with a hand wrapped around the girl's upper arm. Her feet drug across the floor as Cassidy looked back over her shoulder at Melinda.

Braden opened the door for his sister and Cassidy stepped through. The strange fiery-haired siblings were gone.

A man leaning against a building watch the entire event fold out from across the street. When it was all over and done, Braden spat out his toothpick on the ground.

He waited for the officers and the culprit to leave before Braden walked across the street. The Irish man dodged the car effectively. As he came closer to Anodyne, she would be able to see the dark circles beneath the man's eyes and the red tinge.

"Shouldn't 'ave let him go," Braden said to Anodyne. He tugged at his hooded sweatshirt.

"I wouldn't 'ave let him go, but that's just me. It must be hard being the good guy," said Braden. "There's no justice when you're the good guy but what do I know?"

"Name's Braden," he said to Anodyne. "You look like you need someone to talk with, you know."

Anodyne turned her attention towards Braden, a single eyebrow raising as she did a quick of him. Nearly bloodshot eyes, dark circles around them, a hooded sweatshirt and talk of how hard it was being the good guy.

He had to be a junkie. Stryfe told Anodyne to stay away from junkies if she could help it, but Anodyne figured that was because of Stryfe's own problems with her father.

Anodyne shrugged at Braden, digging into a pouch on her utility belt. Moments later the heavily armored and armed woman produced a business card. She held it out for Braden to take, tapping a gloved finger on the words that said, 'Anodyne, The Ripper'.

The woman then pointed to herself.

Braden took the card and flipped it around his fingers after he read the name. He had never heard of her before and he wondered why she wasn't speaking. It was creating a bit of awkwardness.

"Anodyne. That's a hell of a name. Is that a nickname or something?" Braden asked the silent woman. He pocketed the card and crossed his arms over his chest.

And while Anodyne assumed that Braden was a junkie the man showed no other signs of drug use. He was calm, cool, and collected as well as cognitive. Maybe there was another reason for his puffy, red, eyes.

Anodyne nodded as an answer to Braden's question. She opened her mouth to speak, but remained silent. It was clear that the woman was thinking, contemplating if she should actually say something or keep quiet. She didn't like talking much if she didn't have to.

"I got it back home in Liberia." She finally said, her accent coming across as a mix of British and Jamaican, but the vernacular was clearly distinct from both.

"It's Greek. It means painkiller, anesthetic." The woman explained, "Anything I can help you with?" She asked Braden.

“Painkiller, eh? That’s an interesting name you have there, Anodyne,” Braden commented to the woman. “And no, I don’t need your help. I had to get out of the house and breath some fresh air. Not that there’s much in this city but I take what I can get.”

Braden scratched his day’s growth of beard. He rubbed the underside of his nose and looked out past Anodyne.

“What’s it like in Liberia if you don’t mind me asking?” Braden knew that he was keeping the woman from wherever she was going but he just wanted to talk to someone. It was strange to just chat up a random person on the streets but anyone was better than no one.

He had to get out of that house.

"Aye, a lot of people seem to think it's an interesting name. I like it." Anodyne told Braden, glancing towards a family coming her way. A child in the group ran up to Anodyne, a little girl, holding out a poster of Anodyne for the woman to take and sign.

Anodyne took the poster, rummaging through the pouches on her belt until she found a pen. The heavily armed woman gave the girl a smile before finally signing her name and handing the poster back. When the little girl walked off Anodyne turned her attention back to Braden.

"It's... bad. Bad. Not good. Liberia, that is. On top of fighting terrorists, we have to fight our own people about gay rights and giving citizenship to whites." She said, "It used to be much worse..."

"Where are you from?" She asked Braden, she was curious and she also wanted to get off of the subject of Liberia.

Braden watched the curious event with the child unfold. He didn’t say anything or ask why Anodyne was being asked to give her autograph. All the Irishman did was raise his brow and take out a cigarette from a half-crushed pack. He pinched it between his thin lips and lit his coffin nail.

“I’m not from somewhere special,” Braden said to Anodyne. He didn’t seem too keen on offering up too much personal information. After all, she was just a random woman on the streets. They weren’t friends. They were barely acquaintances.

“Do you like coffee?” asked Braden out of the blue. He turned his ice-blue eyes onto the woman and took a long drag from his smoke.

Anodyne shook her head. "I don't need coffee. Never had it." She told the man, "I didn't ask if you were from anywhere special, I just wanted to know where you were from." Anodyne informed Braden. "We're all from somewhere, even if it's no where." She continued.

"You live here at least?" Anodyne asked, looking up and down the street as if searching for something. She was looking for something to intervene in. Hoping for a car chase to stop, a stolen money transport to return.

Something where she could be useful.

Conversation didn't come easy to her on top of that.

Humming pierced the awkward conversation between Anodyne and Braden, as a short distance down the street a bright-haired boy was making his way towards them. In his hands he held a smartphone, and he wore a pair of large black-and-white open-cup headphones plugged into it. His fingers were shifting and dancing all over the screen of the phone, and the expression of concentration he wore - complete with his tongue sticking out of the corner of his mouth - made it obvious that he was playing some sort of game.

As Aiyo, for that was his name, walked nearer, the music from his headphones became faintly audible - if it could be called music. It sounded like some odd shouting noise along the lines of "Wa-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa-pow!" The boy's steps were uneven, as though he were absent-mindedly moving along to the beat of the music, albeit clumsily.

Aiyo didn't notice that he was approaching a pair of people stopped in the street to talk until he bumped into Anodyne, at which point he blinked in surprise, stopping his humming and looking up from his game.

"Oh. Hello." he said, tilting his head, and briefly narrowing his eyes in thought. "Huh... Aren't you Anodyne?" he asked, "You're famous. I saw you on the internet." he added as an afterthought, seemingly oblivious to the strangeness of the observation stated so flatly.

In the background the headphones continued to blare their music. 'Joff-tchoff-tchoffo-tchoffo-tchoff! What's the fox say?'

Bizarre.

“I’m from Ireland,” Braden said to Anodyne. She seemed offended by him not telling her anything and Braden didn’t want to offend anyone. He wasn’t on the job.
“I live with me sisters and me brothers down near the slums.”

An awkward silence hung between the two and it was obvious. Braden didn’t really talk unless there was something to talk about. Most of his conversation was threats or foul language used against … enemies.

“So, what do you do for a living,” Braden was about to ask before a young boy interrupted. The man stepped aside and coughed into his hand. It appeared that Anodyne was some sort of celebrity. She looked the part. Braden glanced at the boy confused. That music he was listening to was awful. Most young kids these days didn’t know what good music was if it slammed into their skull.
