The Gym Leader was painting, as if that was a shock to behold. He had his back turned to Radegast, humming a simple tune while the brush moved in his hands. It would be unclear from Radegast's perspective exactly what he was painting. He only paused from his work a moment, dipping the brush he held into the paint pallet once more before placing it on the canvas. Even with his back turned to Radegast, the teen could easily see the smoothness in his strokes, the finesse behind every wave of the brush. There was a practice to it, a practice this man had many years to develop on to get to the level he was at.

"Hmm?" the Gym Leader paused, his brush held on a spot of the canvas and never wavering. He made a glance behind him, seeing the teenage form of Radegast for the first time. But his initial response wasn't that of horror or of disgust, as one who took fashion seriously would react. In fact, it was completely the opposite. There was...admiration on his face.

"Radegast," the man began, "I've been waiting for you."

The brush moved against the canvas once more, soft even stroke applied. He continued to talk, "I've heard about you through Cheren. He was telling me to be on the lookout for a trainer that didn't seem to follow the traditional method. One that let his Pokemon do the fighting if they wished while watching from the sidelines and supporting them when needed. One that had a very different way of thinking." His strokes began to pick up speed. They still kept their even fluid motion to them.

"You see, I am a man of style. I mean, my room says that much. My clothes say that much. Even my skills and strategies say I like to add a sense of design to my repertoire," the brush moved faster and faster, "You on the other hand have no care for style. You've worn that same dusty hat, that same hoodie, those same rugged jeans, those same worn shoes long before you walked into my domain. And I can respect that. However, even though you may not have style, you have style where it counts." All of a sudden, he stopped painting. He set the brush down and turned to Radegast, pure passion set in his hazel green eyes. Radegast could see the canvas behind him at this point. It was that of a heart encapsulated within a Pokeball. The heart was rainbow-colored in such a way that despite the seemingly random strokes the Gym Leader had applied, they blended together quite nicely.

"You and your Pokemon share a bond stronger than most if not all the trainers I have come across. So strong that I can feel it from across the room, from the moment you stepped into my gym. You have found partners that will help you for life, that would do anything for you. And still, you don't abuse that power. You don't walk above them, you walk among them. You don't lead them into battle, you join the fight when necessary. For that, I respect you much more than any other person I have met so far."

He stepped forward, taking his place on his side of the field, "My name is Burgh. And I will look forward to this battle, win or lose."

BurghVSRadegast

The first Pokeball was thrown, the rainbow coloring of it was nearly lost among the design of the room around it. Out came a much bigger form of Dwebble, the spiral shell on this one replaced by a massive block of rock. You could see this one's claws and his eyes, but not his body as it was eclipsed by the massive shell it lived underneath.

This was Crustle.

“I really wasn’t planning to make a name for myself,” Radegast chuckled when the Gym leader greeted him by name. He pulled his hands from his pockets and found a nearby bench made of dried webbing. He brought the folded-up guitar around and stringed it with a well-practiced skill. “Still, glad to see someone gets it.”

Elder hummed as he paced along the outside, as did Crystal. When Burgh unleashed the huge slab of rock, Elder and Crystal looked at each other. “Looks like that shell’s left him on the slow side. I’d have carved the shell around a design focused around deflection… Whatcha think Crystal?” Elder asked the Dewgong.

“A bit stronger than you, I can tell,” Crystal hummed as her eyes darkened once more. She eyed the Crustle with a chillingly neutral expression. “I got this.” With an elegant swish of her tail, Crystal darted into the arena. She kept her distance in order to watch for long-ranged attacks. She began her attack with a long-ranged Aqua Jet.

Meanwhile, Elder hovered over to Radegast as the human picked a single string at a time, tuning the guitar as he did. “When you really think about it, we’re only managing to waste them due to the secondary types they had,” Elder said.

Radegast paused in his tuning. “You’re not thinking of getting Suros’ help in the end, are you?” He smirked.

“Ha! No,” Elder shook his head with a wheezing laugh, “Crustle has rock typing, not good against flying or fire. I wouldn’t want her out there anyway… Unless she wants to.”

“Well,” Radegast tapped on the pokeball. The Fletchinder popped out and roosted on the bench next to Radegast. “Wanna watch?” Suros cheeped, but otherwise did not move at all. After tuning the guitar, Radegast began playing. Suros relaxed at the sound of the music.

The Operative hopped from Radegast to Elder. The two of them whispered among themselves as they watched the fight.

Crustle wasn't meant to be fast...he was meant to be bulky. He took the Aqua Jet head on and waved it off like it was nothing. It looked like it could take a few more of those. The Crustle snapped it's claws enticingly...almost tauntingly.

Burgh scratched his chin, studying Dewgong and her tactics, "Yes...staying far away so that he's not within reach. No matter. Crustle, start with Stealth Rock!"

Crustle's eyes closed, like he was in deep concentration. Almost instantly, sharp rocks appeared and were levitating around the battlefield, enclosing Dewgong and the Crustle within. It wasn't impossible to escape the field. It would just hurt every time they tried. Switching in and out was going to be a pain for the rest of the fight, it seemed.

Crystal hummed, continued to keep her distance. Though now she was forced to not move too far away, lest she come in contact with the hovering slivers of razor-sharp stone. The Crustle was drenched by the aqua jet, so there was only one thing left to do.

Her horn glowed, and a beam of energy… or… anti-energy? fired at the Crustle. The water caught onto the rock and splashed all around the Crustle would freeze solid. Crystal focused the powerful beam as she kept her distance.

Burgh watched with intrigue as the Ice Beam found it's mark, freezing the dripping water from the Aqua Jet that had punctured it before. A thin practiced smile was on his face. It was his standard poker face, his way of not revealing what he was about to do in battle. He did enjoy the use of tactics like that in this fight, but it would unfortunately backfire in this situation.

The Crustle's hard shell was frozen solid, not the Pokemon that hid below it. As a result, the freezing attempt only proved to make him stronger. There was a plus to this, however. It did make Crustle even slower, rendering close quarter Moves relatively useless as they could be avoided easily. But Burgh was going to play the distance game with the Dewgong.

"Rock Slide!"

The Crustle began throwing a massive onslaught of rocks at Crystal, the flurry of boulders unavoidable as it was a spread shot. It wasn't even a critical hit and Burgh could tell that it would do massive damage, perhaps a bit more than he realized. But one things was for sure...another hit like that and it's light out for Radegast's lead.

“FRIEND-CRYSTAL!” The Primeape had burst from his pokeball. “DO NOT LOSE!!!”

“It’s fine,” Crystal growled as she burst from the pile of rocks that had covered her. She was in bad shape, but she acted strong. The promise! “I just need to get dangerous.”

Crystal darted forward, soared low. With the speed cut down, Crystal reared her immensely tough skull. Aiming upwards, she slammed horn-first into the shell of the Crustle. Since she aimed up, the force of the headbutt would hopefully be enough to turn the cube-like creature onto the back. This would leave the underside terribly exposed, and the added mass of the ice would make it that much more difficult for the Crustle to right itself.

If successful in tipping the Crustle, the Dewgong would swoop around once more and fire another Ice Beam directly into the shell.

Burgh couldn't believe it. Through angles and power, but mostly determination, the Dewgong had successfully managed to flip Crustle onto it's back. He kept his face straight and didn't show his shock on the outside, but typically a move like that should be impossible if not a bit unorthodox.

Only one other trainer had approached the situation the way Radegast's team was doing right now.

"Come on, Crustle! I believe in you!" he called out, hoping he would right himself before Dewgong's second strike went in.

But Crustle was just too slow and too bulky. Crystal's attack hit at just the right amount of power needed to knock it out. Literally any less power and he would still be kicking enough to unleash one more strike upon Crystal. Burgh made the recall, the red surrounding the defeated Crustle as the Bug-Type Gym Leader began to think.

"Hmm...your speed proved to be better than my defense here. Perhaps it's time I have you meet someone faster. Accelgor, let's go!"

A tiny hole in the Stealth Rock was made and the second of Burgh's Pokemon hopped into the arena. Green stripes run from its eyes to the top of its head accompanied a large pink head reminiscent of a helmet. There was a black star-like marking or hole on the front. Its eyes were hidden in a shadowed crevice in its head and seemed to dart from focus point to focus point. The rest of its body was covered by a dull blue, cloth-like membrane and ribbon-like extensions at the top of its back. His arms were crossed as the hole closed behind it.

Another thing for Radegast to keep in mind...this Stealth Rock was here to stay until the end of the fight.

"Swift, go!"

The Accelgor eyes locked on to Crystal with a cold and dark gaze as he shot his arms out, white stars produced from them. They were wickedly fast and followed Crystal wherever she would go. The strike wouldn't hit even half as hard as Crustle's Rock Slide had done, maybe an eighth, but it would do enough so that one more hit would put Crystal out of commission.

Crystal took the tiny star-like blades. Many small cuts did minimal damage, but it left her on her last legs- figuratively speaking. She sighed as she realised she was not going to last one more hit. That rock slide was a good hit.

The Stealth Rock was essentially deadly to her as well. She wouldn’t be able to get out on her own.

“Come on dude!” Suros chirped, “It’s a weak ninja-bug! Kick his ass already!”

Suddenly, Crystal was enveloped in a red energy. She vanished into the beam, and was pulled harmlessly between the razor-sharp slivers of the Stealth rock. Radegast immediatelt let the Dewgong out onto the bench, next to Suros. His guitar was slung over his back. He rose a hand, which Crystal weakly high-fived. “Good stuff, buddy,” Radegast said. Crystal closed her eyes and began to rest on the sidelines.

Elder hummed thoughtfully as he considered his options. “Operative,” he finally said with a beckoning gesture. The tiny Joltik bounded to Elder’s side, and they whispered to each other for a good moment. Afterwards, the Operative hopped over to the forcefield of stone. Being so damn tiny, the Joltik slipped between the slivers and hopped into the arena. Her mandibles clicked as she started off by flinging an electrically charged web of silk. She planned to force some ground-covering, zoning tactics against this faster foe, before using the advantage of her hard-to-hit size to full effect.

Accelgor watched as the Electroweb was flung around him, the voltage traveling through the Shell Out Pokemon and making him instantly slower. It shut it's eyes and winced from the blow. Burgh kept his stance, his face stoic. But his eyes quivered in anticipation. What was going to happen?

The answer was not what was to be expected.

The Accelgor reached out and began to wrap itself within the electroweb. Over and over, the silk coiled around the hands, then the arms, and proceeded to cover his whole body. And he did this at an incredible speed, despite the Joltik's attempt to slow it down. One second he had begun wrapping himself in the Operative's attack. The next he was completely covered. And then...BWOOSH!

The silk was sent flying out in all directions, a bit of electricity left in the web that was dwarfed by a massive amount of bug-like goo that coated the webbing. Even for the minuscule Joltik, the attack would be near impossible to dodge as it was spread out. More importantly, the goop within would weaken the Joltik's abilities to produce crackling electricity.

"Struggle Bug," Burgh noted, "Good move, Accelgor. Glad you could beat me to my call on that one."

The Accelgor gave a curt nod before looking back to see what collateral the Joltik had taken.

“Well played,” the Operative chirped. She limped back onto her tapping feet and checked her abilities. Her electrical charge was terribly cut down. “Well played indeed…” The Operative hopped back through the Stealth Rock. Upon landing from the especially large hop, the Operative’s legs buckled. Though she was not knocked out, she was very terribly weakened.

“Wow,” Elder harrumphed. “Got your ass handed to you, eh, Op?”

The Operative saluted, “Feeling fine, sir!”

Elder smirked, and picked up the tiny bug to let her rest on top of his head. He glanced back to Rage, who seemed incredibly eager to fight. “You know you’re not terribly strong against Bug-types, ri-“

There was a sudden shriek. Elder spun around, and Radegast stood up. From his playing, the human had completely failed to notice. The Fletchinder had dived through the field of Stealth rock, receiving minimal cuts, but she seemed not to notice beyond the pained yelp.

“SUROS! I WILL NOT LET YOU SAVE US AGAIN!!!” Rage stamped rapidly. “WE PROMISED TO BEAT THIS WITHOUT YOUR HELP!!!!”

“I ain’t doin’ this cuz you guys are weak.” Rage began to fume. “Hey no worries, man. I’m just impressed by it’s speed,” Suros cawed lazily, “I… actually feel like doing something for once.”

Elder glanced back at Radegast. The human shrugged before sitting on the bench next to Crystal. He continued playing his guitar from there. “Really?” Elder asked incredulously as he faced Suros once more, “Now you decide to not be lazy?”

“Eh, bite me,” Suros laughed. Her eyes then blazed with fury as she eyed up the ninja-bug. Her voice became borderline murderous. “You’re gonna pay for what you did to the Operative.” The Fletchinder darted forward with incredible speed, closing the distance rapidly to deliver at least one savage peck.

Burgh raised a brow as the Fletchinder flew it's way into the battlefield. It was a confusing move indeed to the experienced Bug-Type specialist, not because Suros flew in at all, but because of how early Suros flew in. "You sent the Fletchinder in..." he said in amazement, realizing what had happened.

His trap worked.

Stealth Rock was a formidable move to deal with, especially when launched early in the battle. It was a constant sap of health for Trainers and Pokemon who liked to tap in and out frequently. The Pokemon who accompanied Radegast were such strategist. But this was a special case. Burgh had calculated before the battle how much each Pokemon would be affected by it. The Joltik had it the easiest, being so small he could slip through the rock shards unhurt. The Beldum and the Primeape were the next best handled for rock-type moves, being resistant to it. The Dewgong and the Haunter would be hurt normally by it. But the Fletchinder...

The Stealth Rock was especially harsh for her. Rock was so effective against Fire and Flying types. Suros was both. As a result, even though she didn't show it, the damage was catastrophic...so much so that her physically leaving the arena at any point during the fight would cause her to faint, even if she did make it out.

She was going to have to take down the rest of Burgh's Pokemon all by herself.

Burgh chuckled a bit, "I'll be honest...I wasn't expecting this one. But I always prepare for these kinds of scenarios, just in case. Anyway, let the fight continue! Accelgor, use Double Team!"

The Accelgor began to run the perimeter of the arena, just barely fast enough to avoid the savage beak that was about to tear through it. One Accelgor turned into two very quickly and soon it looked like two Accelgors were running around the outside opposing each other. Now the Fletchinder had a problem. If she chose to dive at one of the two forms and hit the wrong one, she would go headfirst into that Stealth Rock. If she guessed wrong from afar, the Accelgor could retaliate with the undodgable Swift. If she guessed right and the attack wasn't strong enough to defeat it, he could retaliate with Struggling Bug, another move that was quite hard to dodge although not impossible. She had to be careful and not mess this up or else she would pay the price.

The double-team was impressive, a boost to the already-impressive evasive capabilities of the Accelgor. It did not faze Suros in the slightest. She was here now, and that was all that mattered. She beat her wings with the rapidity of a hummingbird, and the dust from all around the room began to form in a twister. With her immense power, she launched a sand attack in both directions to blind the Accelgors.

Using the cover of the sand, she dove towards the wall- nowhere near either image of the opponent. She turned sharply and shot along the inner circumference of the barrier, poised to ram into the first Accelgor- which had been on her left.

If it was an afterimage after all, Suros would dart through, continue the course, and swoop towards the real one. If it was the real one, however, she’d ram beak-first in a savage peck, and follow up by grabbing at the creature with her razor-sharp talons, keeping the distance close to deliver further destructive pecks.

The winds were howling. The sand was flying. From the outer spectator point of view, it would look like a sand globe had just been shaken. It did it's part and effectively covered the Accelgor's vision. The Fletchinder's follow-up was also an incredible decision, swooping around the outside in the reverse direction it had been traveling around to unleash it's Peck. The move would be unavoidable.

However, so would Accelgor's quick last-ditch effort. Accelgor was blinded, but his Swift stars were not. He unleashed them in a blind fury the moment the sand particles hit. It wouldn't matter where he aimed. They would find their mark and deal some more damage to Suros, not nearly enough to knock her out, but enough to potentially expose how much the Stealth Rock had truly affected her.

As if to add unnecessary collateral to Accelgor, the Peck had enough force and velocity behind it to send Burgh's Pokemon through the Stealth Rock and out of the arena. It was knocked out before it even hit the ground on the far side of Burgh's rainbow-colored room. Burgh recalled his Pokemon and rubbed his chin once more, deep in though. Still, he grinned.

He had Suros exactly where he wanted her. It didn't matter to him whether he beat the rest of Radegast's Pokemon or not. All he wanted to do now was take down an opponent with a double advantage over him. And he knew the first step to do that.

"I think I'll do something I never do...and throw out my signature Pokemon now rather than at the end," he half thought to himself half spoke to Radegast as the tiny hole opened once more, the third Pokemon appearing.

Leavanny was clearly unmatched against Suros. Bug and Grass did not mix well with Fire and Flying, no matter how one twisted it. Even though it was stronger and more experienced than any of the other Pokemon on his team he was using, it wouldn't matter here. Still, he was going to try.

"Leavanny, slow that bird down! String Shot!"

The Leavanny opened it's mouth and released a lightning fast shot of web to coat Suros's wings with. It would slow her down quite a bit, something he needed to do in order to be able to strike when she flew within range. For right now, however, he just needed to pray to Arceus that her next attack wouldn't take down Leavanny in a single stroke.

“Need a pit stop, buddy?” Radegast called as he reached into his pack for one of the four potions he had packed.

“Nah bro!” Suros replied, suddenly dull. “Man, that was too quick…” she muttered. i don't feel like doing anything anymore.

“Shall I take over?” Elder asked, clearly aware of Suros falling back into habit.

“Sure whatev,” Suros replied. She turned her head to Radegast with a nod. Radegast returned the nod and produced another empty pokeball. Just like Crystal, Suros was brought back through and brought out next to Crystal. The Fletchinder then closed her eyes and roosted.

Elder, on the other hand, needed to figure out the best method to pass through. If he were still a Ghastly, he’d be able to phase through the barrier unharmed. The Haunter form was more solid.

“Fuggit,” he moved through the barrier to take 12.5% damage. Immediately after, he chewed on the Oran berry he had equipped, and he swooped to the right to dodge a potential second string shot. The Haunter closed the distance, hiding his hands behind his back to hide what attack he had in mind. If he got within range, he'd shoot his hands out, needle-like claws rearing to inflict deadly Toxic.

Burgh was disappointed to see the Fletchinder go, seemingly tired of fighting after defeating Accelgor. For whatever reason, she had chosen to fight his Accelgor and only his Accelgor. Did she have a standard?

"Interesting," Burgh raked his hand through his hair as he spoke to Radegast, "It seems your Fletchinder doesn't want to battle unless it's to her speed. She could clearly wipe the floor with every single Pokemon I have left to throw at her, but she chooses not to. And while I'd consider that admirable, I'll leave it with a warning. There are always stronger Pokemon out there than you may realize. And though it may not be me, one of these days, you will encounter a Pokemon not even you can surmount."

He said the words less cryptically and more like a friend giving some helpful advice before shrugging his shoulder, "Alright...let's continue I guess. Leavanny, Leaf Blade!"

The two Pokemon would exchange blows: Haunter giving his dose of Toxic poison while Leavanny returned a pretty decent cut with a leaf in retaliation. Leavanny clutched the spot where she'd been pricked. It didn't do substantial damage at first, but Burgh knew as time would go on it would sap her strength quicker and quicker until nothing was left. He was going to have to utilize her as much as possible if he wanted to end up on top.

Radegast glanced at Suros with a grin. “You gonna take that, buddy?”

“Sure,” Suros shrugged, “I’ll welcome it when it comes.”

Radegast sat down and stroked the Fletchinder’s head, resulting in a happy chirp. He then prodded at Crystal. “How you doing?”

Crystal stirred. “Well enough, Lord-Regent,” she began to hover. She had brought herself to 50% capacity.

Every instinct in the Haunter told him to run, to leave the arena. However, his brain managed to walk his body through the pain, figuratively speaking. Elder did not need to call for backup. Just as he backed away, his eyes flashed a Confuse Ray. Whether the effect was applied or not, the Haunter hovered away in a different direction. That was a nasty Leaf Blade, after all. He wouldn’t want to get caught in a desperate swing through the haze.

Burgh realized Elder's strategy the moment the Confuse Ray beelined for Leavanny. He was going for status overload. It was the same way they'd beaten Cheren's second Pokemon, the Cinccino. The triple threat of Toxic, Paralysis, and Confusion was enough for the Normal-Type specialist to take his Pokemon out without even taking that much damage. Burgh clenched his fist in determination. He wasn't going to let that happen here. He wouldn't call back Leavanny...not yet.

However, that didn't mean he was stupid. Going at the Haunter with another Leaf Blade would be the most logical choice, but if Leavanny hurt herself from the Confusion, the damage would be immense, likely taking her out when coupled with the Toxic. So, he'd have to try a weaker approach and see from there.

"Leavanny, go for the Bug Bite!" he called, hoping that the chances would be in his favor.

They were. Leavanny, through bleary eyes, came through with the Bug Bite against the Haunter's left arm. The sting would hurt and it would put Elder on the edge. It didn't do enough to perform the knockout like Burgh had hoped for, but it would hopefully be enough to call for a tag out.

Meanwhile, the poison surged through Burgh's Pokemon, and she started to look a bit weak.

The instincts screamed as the mandibles sank into Elder’s hand. Get out! Get out! Get out! His mind retorted as it raced. No! Not when Suros fought at half-health! I can’t fail again like in the poison gym. Use your brain, damnit!

A lucky hit, that’s all it was. the Haunter’s claws curled to get a grip over the Leavanny’s jaw, preventing her from pulling away. With his other hand, Elder swung a shadowy punch, aimed at the Leavanny’s head. “You’re not getting me that easily!” Elder’s signature Haunter grin was gone as he swung savagely. “We are in a hurry!!!”

The Sucker Punch was square and full force, but the Leavanny's hardened exoskeleton resisted the blow. Burgh's eyes lit up with excitement.

"Now, use Bug Bite again!"

But this time, the Confuse Ray came through for Elder as Leavanny ended up attacking herself. Burgh took a deep breath. It wasn't over yet. he knew.

But things weren't looking that good. Leavanny looked much weaker now as she barely seemed able to stay level-headed what with the confusion and Toxic eating her away. He knew that in a moment it would all be over for her and he'd have to move on to his fourth and final Pokemon so he had to make this last move count.

"Leavanny, give it everything you have! Hit 'em with a Leaf Blade!" he called.

Sure, it may seem like overkill. But he wasn't going to take any chances. He wanted at least one knockout and he hoped the stars would align for this one.

This time, another Sucker Punch shot out. Elder barely managed to weave past the blade and swing his fist. The intercepting nature behind this attack guaranteed the attack would fare more effective. Regardless of if the attack landed or not,

Radgast hummed in thought as he watched Burgh. There was still one pokeball left. He looked to Crystal. “Might wanna get ready, buddy," he chimed as he continued to play.

“FRIEND-CRYSTAL,” Rage bellowed, “CONTINUE YOUR REST! I WILL FIGHT!!” Crystal complied.

After the second Sucker punch, whether it hit or not, Elder would retreat immediately afterward, ready for Radegast to pick him up once more with the pokeball.
