Calem Jefferson quietly snuck down the stairs from the Gambit's Hotel. He knew he wasn't supposed to be down here alone, not that it mattered anyway. His uncle never watched out for him and his father... Well, he didn't need to go there. His father was a deadbeat dad as much as that hurt to say. Both men would rather go off and have fun time with women then spend time with kids. It was a shame really.

The small child sighed, having left his sister in Anna's care upstairs, he decided to sneak down and see what was going on in the bar. Normally there was always someone worth chatting too.

There were a few people in the bar. Not as many as Calem had seen previous nights. Normally the bar was completely packed. Tonight must have been a quiet night then. Calem didn't know whether that was a good or bad thing. Normally the fun happened when lots of different people mingled together. Calem had learned while travelling with D, that he liked to meet new and different people.

He noticed a really tall man enter the bar and shrank back in intimidation at first. The man was like a giant compared to the young child's small frame. Calem had never seen anyone that tall before and curiosity got the better of him. "Wow. You're mighty tall sir. You're taller than my dad!"

Calem Jefferson frowned as he wandered around outside of Gambit's Bar. He was never allowed to stray this far out by himself. Anna would kill him. So would Jessica. But hopefully, they'd never notice. He was just bored of staying in all the time. He was sick of watching Caleb deny him and his sister. His mother was dead and Calem realised that he wasn't going to get the father he wanted from D or Caleb. Everyone abandoned him and Jess, everyone so far except Anna.

But still. Anna was nice and everything, but he wanted another male figure just to talk to and hang out with. So that is what led him to this 'adventure' as a child would call it. Calem wanted to go out and see if he could make friends. They're were a lot of people around the plaza at this time of the day, but not children. He soon found himself bored once more, and so started wandering into places.

It wasn't long later that he walked into a mechanic's place. At first he couldn't see anyone, but he was fascinated by the cars and the tools around. So he made it his business to look around and started messing with things that didn't belong to him.

Calem jumped a mile at the voice and looked like he was about to run when his eyes had finally settled on the man. He frowned, listening to what was said and searching for the screwdriver. He'd been messing with a few others on a table nearby. Quietly he grabbed the screwdriver on the floor out of the puddle and quickly handed it to the man before stepping back.

"I'm sorry. I'm not in trouble, am I?" He asked quietly, scared that he was in big trouble with the man that was fixing the car. "I wasn't messing, I promise."

Calem looked amazed when the man offered to let him help. If D or Caleb had a place like this and he'd wandered in, they both would have kicked him out on his butt by now. He was only six, and mostly annoying to people, but young Calem was going to jump at the chance to help an adult fix a hovercraft.

"I'd love to help. Do you own this or is it someone elses?" He asked, looking at the hoverbike and grinning at the thought of helping the man out. He was one excited little boy. He hadn't been this excited in a long time.

Calem did exactly as he was told, moving back and holding the tape as if it was the key to his life. He had the silliest grins on his face just from helping out, not that he'd helped out much yet. All he'd done was hand a screwdriver over, hold some take and stand back. He did so.

"My name's Calem. What's yours?" He asked curiously.

"I'm a real good listener." Calem started. "I know my dad and D don't think I am, but I promise that I am." He told Jorge, desperate to prove that he could listen and do what was said. He would have taken notes if he could write. "I'll do it. But what happens if I touch the light by accident?"

When Jorge indicated, Calem moved closer and carefully tried to do as Jorge said with the wires and tape, hoping that he wouldn't screw up anything at all.

Calem beamed at the thought of doing such a good job. He was happy and was really enjoying working with Jorge. When the guy asked about Calem's parents, he frowned.

"My mother died. But D and dad don't care where I go. They like to spend time talking to girls." He said truthfully. "My sister - we're twins - that means we're born on the same day, is with Anna. Anna normally looks after us when D and Dad wanna talk to the girls. Well, dad hates us. He never wants to look after us." Calem frowned looking at the ground instead.

Calem looked up at Jorge. "You want me to help more?" He asked Jorge. "D always says that we can't help because we make a mess of things." He sighed. "I like cars though. And I like helping you out. My sister wouldn't like it here though. She gets scared a lot. And she doesn't like cars. She thinks they go too fast and are real dangerous." Calem rambled, following Jorge to see what job he had for him.

When Jorge wiped his hands on the rag, Calem tried to copy. Not finding a rag of his own, he pulled out a tissue and wiped his hands on the tiny crumpled paper.

"I want to help!" Calem all but cried out in excitement and fear. He was scared that Jorge wouldn't let him help and immediately followed, carefully taking the canister and doing what he was told. He hoped that he was doing a good job as he inserted the canister.

"Like that?" He asked.

When Calem knew he was going along the right tracks, or if Jorge had to make a few corrections, he then carefully pressed the blue button.

Calem grinned, loving every second of what he was doing, despite it being a simple job. He frowned though when Jorge said that that was all there was to do. He wanted to help out a lot more. "Can I come back and help you do more stuff? I promise I'll be real good and I'll mess with nothing." He told the man, pleading to be able to come back to help. And he really didn't want to go backto Caleb and D.

"I will do." Calem told him. "And I'll help you out with everything and I'll fix people's cars and we'll have a lot of fun. Do you like fixing up the cars? I like cars. Dad used to have a really nice car but we were never allowed in it. And then he left us and mom and then mom died." Calem told him, chatting away about everything.

"I can't wait to fix the cars tomorrow. Wait until I tell Jess and Anna. They'll be impressed and then maybe my dad and D will like me more when I show them how to fix cars."

Calem nodded. "Do you have any children? Do they help out here? I want to work on cars one day." Calem was still happily asking questions and rambling about things. He was in his element helping out here.

"I wish I lived here. It's a lot cooler than staying in the bar. All there is to do there is jump on the tables and that's pretty boring now."

"It's more scary in the bar." Calem told him. "Dad and D always get in fights and sometimes there is a crazy woman in there. And this one time, these guns were there." He told him. "There is a lot of fights and it gets really scary but D says that we have to stay. A scary man is looking for us as well. I don't like it."

"I'd like living here with you and the cars. I bet that is pretty neat." He added looking around at all the different cars.

Calem frowned. "D and Dad couldn't care less if I were there or not. Caleb - my dad, hates us. He's never looked after us. We don't even live with him. We never have. He just left us and our mom. And D pretends he likes us, but he wishes we were gone too." Calem frowned. "Even here would be better than there."

Calem frowned, but already had an idea in mind. He wasn't going to go home. The idea was firmly planted in his head now that he'd thought about it. He was going to stay here. He could sleep in a car. He'd slept at the back of D's car before.

"Okay. I'll go home." He lied. "I'll see you tomorrow." With that, he sulked back out of the shop, found somewhere to hide so he could watch for when was a good time to try and sneak back into the shop.

Calem frowned as Jorge closed the door and Calem thought he had no way to get back inside, until he noticed Jorge examine the window. As soon as he thought the man was out of sight, he was moving boxes to the window in an attempt to try and climb into the place.

Calem Jefferson walked into the bar once more. He'd disappeared for quite a while, but now the child was back. He had no idea where Jessica was. Nor did he care. It had been two years almost since he'd been around this part of town. Now, at 8, nearly 9, he decided to return to the place that his father once hung out and decided to see if his sister was still around. He hadn't had any kind of communication with her and unfortunately, the way his life had been the last couple of years, his attitude was a lot like his father's instead of the cute boy he'd been.

The young boy found himself now wandering some dark woods. He frowned, trying to find his bearings. He'd been trying to find some shelter and food for a while now. Since running away from his uncle and his deadbeat father, him and his twin sister Jess had been on quite the adventure.

"I don't like this place." His sister whimpered. She was the twin that was scared of everything. She hated everything and she hated running away from Anna, a nice lady they had befriended in Gambits. But Calem had convinced her to come with him.

"Don't worry, we'll find somewhere." Calem replied, finding his sister's hand. He could see her fear in his mind. He was after all a mindreader, though it wasn't something practised or well honed. Half the time he couldn't control what he heard and if in big groups got bombarded by everything that it gave him a headache. He had also found that he could talk to his sister with his mind. That was only with his sister though. His sister, on the other hand had been slightly luckier with her ability, gaining empathic skills and being able to read people's emotions, though she neither was trained or well honed in that power.

"I wish we were back with Anna."

"They didn't care about us." Calem snapped.

"Anna did," Jess replied, choosing to speak this conversation as no one seemed to be in this place, and that's what scared her.
