Born in Canceron, Calen Ramos lived in the slums of Hades for most of his life. From an early age he learned how to fight, earning his bread and shelter with hard labor and keeping it with his fists. Eventually, the young man was lured into the Aschen military with promises of wealth and glory, leaving behind his meager existence in Canceron for a brighter future.

An aspiring marine, Ramos quickly distinguished himself from his peers in basic training alone. His outstanding combat skills caught the attention of his superiors, and the young man was moved into the TacOps division at a mere eighteen years old, the youngest ever. In his extensive training with the Aschen elite core, Calen's abilities as a soldier were expounded upon extensively. The young man became proficient in a plethora of weaponry; from lead to plasma, pistol to explosive. Under the tutelage of his nation, Calen learned a wide variety of different languages, and fluently speaks Gemonese, Basic, Latin and Taiyou.

With his gifted combative abilities and outstanding intuition, Ramos advanced twice as fast as his peers, meriting both their admiration and their jealousy. Within a mere three years of his service, Ramos had been promoted to Captain , one of the youngest officers in the Empire. The young man is currently engaged with the Galactic Unification war, hoping to make a name for himself in the bloody conflict.

Off-field, Ramos is reserved and thoughtful. He's an incredibly bright scholar and can pick up almost any lesson the first time it's taught to him. Not above having a good time, Calen preserves a decent sense of humor and loves the company of other people. He is incredibly devoted to his fellow soldiers, and whole-heartedly devoted to his nation and his superiors.

A paragon of his kind, Ramos is slowly coming to grips with his incredible gifts. He understands that he's far-above the class of the average Aschen trooper, and isn't afraid to flaunt his abilities on the battlefield. Calen is gradually developing an ego as he realizes the full extent his power, realizing that he could, in fact, become the greatest Aschen warrior who's ever lived.

Ramos lives for honor and glory. Having had a neglected childhood in Canceron that revolved purely around surviving and keeping a reputation, there is nothing more satisfying to Calen then achieving success. Despite this, Calen despises cheating. The Aschen truly believes in 'combat with honor', deciding that if he cannot win at something fairly, he would rather not win at it at all. He maintains a sense of morality, committing himself to his friends and respecting even his enemies. He despises looting and is appalled at the mistreatment of PoW's and torture in general. Ramos takes no pleasure in the pain of his enemies, and the only satisfaction he derives in killing them is the knowledge that he was able to defeat them.

Calen fought bravely throughout the Aschen Unification Wars, distinguishing himself on the battlefield and ascending even higher through the Imperial ranks. For all his valor, he was captured by Taiyou soldiers on Ragnaar and kept in captivity for a long while. During his imprisonment, former Aschen President Laura Roslin exposed Calen to the corruption of the Empire. Realizing that his entire service and point of existence was a lie, Calen fell into a deep depression; his mind broken beyond repair. When Darian McGregor came to his cell and offered him a new purpose under the malevolent teachings of the Ori, Ramos allowed himself to be swayed.

A true-born Aschen, Calen believes that all the endeavors of the Empire are for the benefit of its people, and are ultimately good. The Scatterans and Terrans are both terrorists seeking to wipe out the Imperial way of life.

So begins...

"Silence..." Calen's voice was a haggard whisper now. Each straining word was harder to speak then the last. Despite his mental sickness, however, Calen's reflexes remained as honed as ever. The trooper lunged forward the moment Kendra retrieved her tanto, quickly attempting to knock the weapon out of her hand and follow up with another strike across the woman's temple with the butt of his sword. Given his superior training and inhuman abilities, he'd hopefully incapacitate Kendra.

"Fatue puella..." Calen spat, quickly re-activating his shields and storming towards Kendra. Were it not for his precise movements and uncanny athleticism, the soldier very much appeared as if he were intoxicated. Ramos sprinted towards Kendra, quickly attempting to kick the gun out of her hand. That done, the trooper would grapple with the wounded woman, struggling to throw her over his shoulder. Calen had shut down on reasonable, thinking parts of his brain. He had orders. Deliver Kendra to Thorne. Those were his orders. Follow the orders. Obey his superiors. Everything would be alright.

Calen Ramos staggered back, grimacing in pain. If anything, the sensation served to bring Ramos back into the real-world, if only a little bit.

"Take her, then..." he growled, shaking his head furiously. He turned and looked as if he would leave, before storming back. "Kanojo o toru! Mesu buta!" The warrior roared like a savage beast, his face red with confused fury and contorted with an animilistic frenzy. "Come on! You don't want her? I'll take her! I'll kill you! I'll kill all of you!" Ramos strode forward, brandishing his blade. "Come on you Taiyou bastards! Watashi to tatakau!"

"NNNAAGGHHH!" Calen growled as he hit the ground, Motoko's sheer weight pinning him into the floor. The man's cry was in anger, not in pain. The soldier was still reeling from his mental breakdown. Adrenaline and self-doubt coursed through his system like a fine drug. The honorable, clear-minded soldier he had always been was slowly giving way to a savage monster. Blips of agony seared through his body from where the bullets had struck him. He was crushed under the weight of an inhumanly powerful cyborg.

He felt nothing but hatred.

With a mental command, the T-65's two spare Deuterium-Tritium micro-fusion cells sparks into action. After a brief, half-second charge, Calen activated one of his blink-packs, literally teleporting out of Motoko's grip and re-appearing next to a few Imperial warriors... a bloody vibroblade outstretched.

Screaming in some incoherent blend of Taiyou, Basic and Gemonese, Calen attacked in a blind frenzy, combining elite skill with insatiable fury. He struck; slashing and hacking at anything with a body and a heartbeat.

"YYYAAAAAAAHHHHHH!" Calen roared, hit dead-on with all three shots. Nearly the same instant Calen was thrown to the ground, he was springing back on to his feet, charging at the Imperial warriors and exchanging blade-glances with a score of them. Although the TacOps trooper was outnumbered at least ten times over, he kept every one of them on the defensive. The warrior fought with the skill of three men, and with the frenzy of a Terran.

But not even his bloodthirsty rampage could stop Motoko's hacking skills. One moment Rammos was driving his blade through the chest of an Imperial, the next he was face-down on the cold floor, spitting curses in languages most of them didn't even recognize. Even if they did, he wasn't speaking coherently enough to be properly understood. His eyes were bloodshot, his teeth barred and snapping. Foam appeared at the edges of his mouth. He was hardly even a man anymore.

Calen Ramos didn't say a word. He had ceased speaking, cursing and screaming. His unblinking eyes stared depthlessly into the empty air, his cheeks spattered with blood and his teeth clenched tight in his mouth. He did not even seem to acknowledge Motoko's existence. Her, or anyone else.

Calen Ramos 's head was bowed, his long hair obscuring his eyes and shadowing his face from the view of his detainers. The warrior was naked except for a small pair of trousers, exposing the plethora of battle-scars splayed across his chest to Laura and the Taiyou.

The soldier didn't even seem to move as Rosling approached him. His eyes remained downcast, his gaze fixated on the dark floor. His voice, low and unbalanced, was devoid of all but the most simplistic emotions.

"You are Laura Roslin," he nearly whispered, "former president of the Aschen Confederation of planets. You are an exile of the Empire."

Calen Ramos 's hands slumped to his side, and for a moment, the soldier stared incredulously at his limbs. He rotated his wrests curiously, flexing his arms as if he hadn't seen or used them in ages. He reached out precariously towards the book, thumbing through the pages gently.

"Illegal to the Confederacy," Ramos shook his head slowly after a moment of labored thought, "...but the Aschen people are under an Empire now. We follow one ruler. A god in his own right." He groaned. "...who would not follow a god?"

For once, Calen looked up at the girl; his dark eyes glimmering in painstaking pride.

"Everything I have... anything I am... is because of me, and no one else," the warrior asserted adamantly, "I've trained my whole life to be what I am. Not a second of my existence has been wasted in not bettering myself. I have fought and clawed and killed my way to where I am now." His head bowed once again.

"...perhaps that's why I am where I am right now. Chained. Locked in a cell."

Calen Ramos was silent for a long while, his empty eyes glaring drunkenly into oblivion.

"All my life I've followed orders," Ramos said after a short breath, "I followed the orders of my superior officers. They had me capture and torture civilians. I followed the orders of a man I believed to be a god. He denies my religious freedoms and abandons his people when the Empire starts losing the war. I follow the orders of a ranking officer back in Ragnarr, and I end up here. The most humiliating and dishonorable state of my life."

Calen looked up at Laura. "As you can see, Ms. Roslin, my entire life has been spent following orders. I thought if I did what I was told and preformed to the best of my ability, I would be rewarded. I was wrong." Slowly, the trooper brought himself up, straightening his hunch and standing at his full height.

"I am one of the greatest warriors in the Empire," Calen spoke proudly, his jaw grit, "I am not boasting. On the contrary, I am insulting myself. The fact that there are others as good if not better then me is a testament to my own laziness. I have done things on the field of combat worthy to be made into songs. If my head and legs were not chained to this wall, I would very much be capable of incapacitating you and every Imperial warrior in this cell, naked and without a weapon. Minus the cyborg, of course."

Calen shook his head. "That's the thing, Ms. Roslin. I am the perfect soldier. The ideal warrior." He scoffed. "...but that's it. That's all I am. All my life I've been a tool in the hands of others. I've only gotten pain because of it." The soldier held out the Articles of Confederation for Roslin to take back.

"Why would following you be any different?"

The small company of Aschen armor rolled as quietly as two Myrmidon tanks can across the billowing stretch of desert and charred grass seperate New Darban from the rest of Wing City. Once, this expanse had been a series of lush fields and speckling forests. In the distant horizon, plumes of sickly smoke billowed out of the towering Wing City skyscrapers. War had taken its toll on Terra's natural beauty just as much as it had its synthetic.

The TacOps troopers sitting about the tanks looked as nervous as highly-trained elite warriors are allowed to appear... checking over their disruptor's repeatedly and scanning the fields ever half second or so. With Scatteran forces contesting air-superiority, it was a risk moving anything across the sky... especially essential supplies meant for the heavily-opressed Aschen outpost in the New Darban area. Moving the convoy by land was the safest route at this point. Even then, it wasn't especially safe. The TacOps knew that a fight to get their packages to New Darban safetly was almost guaranteed.

Of all the soldiers laying about the tanks, only Captain Ramos appeared in the least bit at ease, steadying himself on one of the Myrmidon's handles and scanning the horizon with DRADIS technology.

"We'll be in the city in less then five minutes," the Aschen radioed into his fellow troops. A low murming of assent followed.

"Captain..." one of the younger troopers spoke back in, "have you heard the rumors surrounding this place?"

"Rumors?"

"Yeah. I heard... I heard the Halo is on Terra."

Ramos chuckled assuringly. "You scared of space pirates, Gertrum?"

"I dunno'. I just wish I knew what to expect here, y'know? UCON and Belkans get predictable after a while. But pirates? How the hell are we supposed to prepare for that?"

Ramos shook his head. "Batton down the hatches. Raise the British flag. Keep the powder dry." A small chorus of forced laughter elicited from the soldiers. Ramos' plated hand slapped his fellow trooper in the sho

A soldier mounted at the front of the convoy suddenly perked up, his hand coming to his visor.

"Something wrong, Sergeant?" Ramos stepped towards him.

"Whispers on DRADIS..." the trooper mumbled, "...just a few men. Pedestrians maybe. They seem to be-BYTHEGODS!" It was at that moment that flurry of rockets collided with the front of the tanks, the first of which hit the screaming Sergeant directly in his chest. The explosion was blinding, and the unfortunate Aschen was sent spiraling many hundreds of feet into the air, flailing about like a ragdoll.

"Shields!" Ramos roared, quickly crouching, "defensive cover! Keep the tanks moving!" As the storm of rockets blazed against the rumbling armor, the TacOPs could only duck their heads and wait for the hurricane of fire and death to pass them over. The Myrmidons rocked and rumbled, receiving dent after dent in their thick armor, but thankfully managed to remain upright. They powered forward, battered and slightly broken, little plumes of flame still bubbling of their hulls.

The Aschen themselves were, thankfully, TacOps troopers. Their extensive armor and shielding managed to keep them safe from firepower that would have otherwise boiled them raw, while their mangetized boots kept them rooted against forces that would have catapulted them into oblivion.

"Full acceleration!" Ramos roared to the men piloting the tanks, "maximum speed! Fire at ANY whispers!" The Aschen brought his disruptor around with one arm, his other hand madly gripping the side of the Myrmidon. A flurry of green lights funneled out of his gun as the Captain fired in the general direction of the rebels, his teeth-grit tight enough to shatter, his fingers death-gripping the tank. The other soldiers were quick to return fire as well, streaming a volley of disruptor blasts from where they sat along the tank, obliterating most of everything in their path. The plasma turrets mounted on the tanks whirred and roared into life, spewing molten chunks of

ionized energy towards the grenade-launchers mounted on the rooftops.

"Move move move!" Ramos growled. They wouldn't survive another head-on assault like that. They needed to get out of here NOW.

Were Calen in the right mind, he might have responded very differently to Darien's sudden presence. The fact that a stranger had managed to creep into his heavily-guarded cell without his noticing was both alarming and disturbing. In his prime, he might have fought. Challenged. Sneered at the man who offered him escape.

But of course, Ramos was not in the right mind. He was not in any mind at all, in fact. He was a man devoid of purpose and reason; living without any cause at all.

"I am doomed regardless of my path," the TacOps trooper quipped sullenly, "I have believed a thousand different doctrines of 'enlightenment'. They all bring me to ruin." He growled. "Why would yours be any different?"

"McGregor..." Calen gaped at the mention of the familiar name. He stepped forward but recoiled sharply. "The Ori?" he shook his head, "...the same Ori we fought a bloody war against years ago? The same enemy that sought to enslave us and force us to their will?" Ramos shook his head. "What sort of freedom could I find serving such a race? They're the sworn enemy of the Aschen people."

Calen Ramos was about to resist. Following the Ori went against everything he'd ever learned in life. It was the Terran equivalent of worshiping Satan. The Ori were evil... destructive... manipulative...

The beast in Calen scoffed. And what, the Aschen weren't? The Empire had chewed him up and spit him out. His people had left him to die in prison. The Aschen had betrayed him. Why not give the Ori a chance? It wasn't like he had anything to lose.

Calen had been wishing a long time for something to believe in. Perhaps this was it.

"What sort of... knowledge... are you referring to..." Ramos took a cautious step forward.

"I don't want many things," Calen shook his head, placing his hand on the book, "in fact, there's only one thing I want for sure." He met Darian's eye. "I want purpose. I want truth. I don't want to spend the rest of my life wondering why I'm living." He gulped, his eyes red.

"Give me that and I'm yours."

"I'll believe," Calen nodded. If only because he had nothing else to believe in. "I believe." He stepped forward, a desperate soul, lost in the darkness. A path is found, and in his madness, he does not even notice that he is descending.
