"It's interesting how the City hasn't given you much red tape as far as operating in a Law Enforcement capacity." She commented, while shifting in her chair, and pulling up her portable datapad.

"I was asking because I was trying to be friendly, not that it had anything to do with 'my plans' for Lutetia." She quipped back, offering a smile. "I noticed a lot of people give in to certain racial stereotypes about us, and I imagine the rampant nationalism of the Empire doesn't help. Everyone's an individual with their own stories, their own struggles. You may see me as just a Tech Con minion out to sell you a spiel about how great the company is, but I'm a living breathing human being who bleeds red just like you." She added, tapping on the datapad.

"Tech Con has had a lot of successes in cities here on Terra, and across the wider Aschen Empire. Wing City, Asteria City, the list goes on." She said, nodding. "But I'm not here to sell you the company, I'm trying to sell you on an idea." She said, waving her hand and swiping the datapad.

"The idea of salvation for a wretched hive of scum and villainy, clean streets and gleaming facades replacing shit strewn quarters and crime riddled filth. Sometimes we make sacrifices for the greater good."

"If Tech Con moved to Lutetia, I imagine it'd drop the percentage of those living under the poverty line by a staggering thirty five percent, and bring over fifty thousand jobs to the city. That's just the initial operation.. when redevelopment actually starts, the projections say that five hundred thousand jobs would be added to the city. Those jobs would build homes for the city's homeless, and they could apply for a Work4Domicile program that the company offers, where the company pays your housing and living expenses in exchange for menial janitorial and simple tasks."

Once he mentioned the red tape and the phantom quarter, the woman nodded in agreement.

"Our survey wasn't promising, Mr. Vogel said the entire quarter would have to be bulldozed, the soil and sewers dug out and sanitized, and the entire thing built up from scratch, on top of the city's red tape, that's a lot of money already slated for just one district... and campain contributes for the politicians alone to sell them on the idea."

"Red tape, friendly conversation and political wrangling aside, Mr. Davion, I'm here to do a survey, so I'd like to know exactly how Tech Con's operations in Lutetia, should they come to fruition, impact your business, and your opinion on Tech Con Group as a whole, will have on this city, and your business here." She said, opening up a form on her datapad.

"I want honest answers, don't hold anything back." She added, looking up and smiling.

He leaned back in his seat and crossed his arms. "A change in scenery isn't necessarily going to change how people behave Ms. Henderson. That will take some time." He had seen them down in the Phantom Quarter. He had known what they know now before they even came to Lutetia.

He sighed. "Best case scenario, I will be taking more pictures of cheating husbands and less of corpses. Worst case scenario, the rioters will burn the city down. There will be piles of corpses and I will have no film to take the pictures." He had been part of more wars and battles than a man had a right to and survive so it was no surprise that he did not want to see Lutetia burn. "Tech Con is a mega conglomerate business Ms. Henderson. I would be forced to compete with them for business." Tech Con would wipe Vindex out financially.

He seriously doubted Callandra claims and wasn't sure where she was getting her numbers and percentages. Tech Con moving in and remodeling wouldn't produce any new exploitable resources short of the ruination of the wilderness around the city. He doubted seriously that Lutetia could produce any extraordinary attractions that couldn't be found in another Terran city such as Wing City. There would not be much in the way of new tourist traffic. Tech Con would just be another kid to feed at a table with scraps and a rather gluttonous one at that. They would rip up the countryside while trying to squeeze blood from stones.

"No, A change in scenery won't change how people behave, that's why the overbearing police presence no thanks to increased funding would remove those unstable elements."

The Tech Con security chief nodded, pausing to remember the November riots back on Langara. The images played through her head of Aschen police officers firing their plasma rifles into crowds of protesters.

"What do you know about Aschen History, Mr. Davion?" She asked, tilting her head inquisitively. "I know it's probably not something that's taught here, but it's a personal curiosity."

"Tech Con is indeed a large corporation, and has considerable financial resources available to it." She said, taking down some notes for a moment, and then she checked the datapad as it received a text message.

"Sometimes sacrifices have to be made for the march of progress." She said while frowning at the Text message, which was a budget analysis from Miles Hagan himself.

"But it looks like someone shares your opinion, Mr. Davion." She said, tilting the Datapad. "Mr. Hagan just scrapped the whole thing."

"I know only the Aschen history that involves Terra in wars Ms. Henderson and so I may have a skewed opinion of your people. You are certainly correct that sacrifices sometimes must be made in the name of progress. Perhaps I will take some time over the next few weeks to read up on some Aschen history so I can get a better perspective. Do you recommend any particular Aschen book or piece of literature?" No matter what she said he would nod and thank her.

When she commented that the program had been scrapped he nodded sagely. "It is just as well. If Lutetia is to pull itself from the muck it needs to be the people that live here. A easy won victory is seldom appreciated.", he would say and stand. "It was a pleasure to have meet you Ms. Henderson." He smiled and would shake her hand if she allowed it and then walk her to his office door.

Callandra nodded, before she stood up. Then she took a piece of paper and wrote down a title.

"A Brief history of the Empire is the most inclusive text." She said, sliding the note towards Bowen.

"My Partner must have submitted his preliminary survey for Mr. Hagan to pull the plug on this whole affair. It's just as well I'd rather be in Wing City than here." Cally said, extending her hand.

"Likewise, I thank you for meeting with me." She said, turning to the door, shortly after taking his hand in a firm handshake.

"Just gotta wrap up here in the City, and catch the flight out." She added, and would leave once shown out.

"I see..." Arren said as he listened to Finn talk about Meg.

"I've seen some strange things in my lifetime, but her reaction was certainly on top." He said, playing it up with a shrug. The former LDA Agent was already making a mental note, He was suspicious of the girl, was she some Terrorist? Part of some Anti-Aschen reactionary group? He'd have to do some snooping to find out."

As Finn led him through the halls, his eyes lingered on Meg's door, as they ran over any visible lock, traditional or otherwise.

"Ever wondered what was behind that door?" He said, turning to Finn. "For all we know she's packing some serious heat." He commented, and then quickly dismissed it. "Ah well..." He said, shrugging again as he took in the details of the hallway.

"Each room has it's own bathroom... alright.." He said, looking up and down the hall, nodding in approval as his head turned to the direction of the sound of the front door.

Instinctively his hand moved to the back of his pants, as if to reach for something. "Maybe it's my associate." He commented, visibly relaxing. "Sorry... it's just when you're in a place where everyone wants to lynch you... you tend to be on edge." Arren added, peering out a window that so happened to be facing towards the street, watching as a black BMW 7 series slowly rolled up to the front of the Apartment.

----

"Beaulieu street..." She said to herself as she put the phone down on the dashboard. "This is it... what a seedy ass house you rented, Arren." She commented to herself as the car was placed in park.

"Rims are gonna get stolen, the car's going to get jacked... oh well it's a rental." She said, opening the driver side door and slowly stepping out. She was still in the flowing designer dress that she had worn to the VINDEX meeting, the black dress accentuated the woman's form, and was complimented by a small leather purse.

She didn't look like much, nor did she look like Arren's business associate. But none the less she made her way towards the front door with what amounted to a look of disgust.

She would have arrived mere seconds after the other woman arrived, and was making her way towards the front door just as Meg offered Illara to come in.

(sorry to hold things up! Ill be checking up here on a daily now.)

Illara smiled broadly at Meg, clasping her in a rough handshake more suited to a dockworker than a young lady. Her fingerless leather gloves were grubby but worn supple by years of use.

"Pleasure. Call me Illa." Craning her neck to look up at the crumbling old manse, she commented, "Hey, if it's got power and keeps the rain off, can't complain." The shadow of a frown crossed her face, "It does have power, right?" She was still adjusting to the technological disparity between Lutetia City and her home in Aslund, and it wouldn't be the first time she was taken aback by the anachronistic infrastructure.

"Cats.." she murmured, trying to find a polite way to address the question without revealing that, like most of the denizens of her seedy district, she had eaten more cats than she had ever patted on the head. The memory of the gamey flavor thinly concealed by a thick layer of five-spice and a few turns over a spit-fire made her a touch nostalgic.

Her rescue came in the form of the striking woman now approaching. Glad to change the subject, Illara emitted a low whistle, her eyes drinking in the rich elegance of her outfit. "Miss Universe!" She called out, a sardonic grin splayed across her face. Scenting old money with bloodhound acuity, a business card filled her fingers quick as thinking, and she proffered it to the elegantly dressed woman as if no further introduction was needed. A tiny embossed hoverbike at the center was flanked by the enigmatic script, 'Carter's Goods and Services Delivered"

Finn looked at Arren with wide eyes, his ears flattened against his head. "Of course I wonder what's behind that door," he admitted, but then shook his head. "But Meg deserves her privacy, just like anyone else. You'd do well to remember that. She guards herself for a reason, I'm sure. We've all got our secrets, and whatever hers are, they're her business. She's a great woman. You'll see. You'll like Meg. Don't let her... ahh... reaction... give you the wrong impression."

As they came down the stairs, Finn noticed Arren's reaction to the opening of the front door and his ears flattened once more. A blur of brown fur shot out of the living room and Finn reached down to scoop up the cat, using one paw to scratch lovingly under the feline's chin. "This is a safe place," he said quietly. It was unsure if he was saying it to the cat or reminding Arren that there should be no violence in the home... or said as an affirmation to himself and his nervousness at the strange situation. "Nobody's going to lynch you as long as you're a good roommate, you know?"

-------------------

Outside, Meg laughed at Illara, the discomfort of the Aschen proximity shoved aside for the moment. She liked this girl already. "Yes, there's electricity. We even have running water. It may not be the most luxurious domicile in town, but it serves its purpose right now. I'm planning a lot of remodeling to make it much better, so as long as you don't mind being patient, I promise it'll be more than just some rundown shack. In the meantime, I think you'll find that it isn't as horrible as it looks." She turned to open the door, smiling. "Oh, and every bedroom has its own bathroom, so you don't have to share with one of those silly males that can't quite seem to hit the toilet."

Just as Meg opened the front door, she turned to notice the newcomer and blinked in surprise. Her eyes moved over the vehicle, the designer gown, the impeccable hair and makeup. Covetousness flashed in her eyes, a longing that lasted only a moment as she took in the details and tried to place them with a designer she was familiar with. And then, as if reminding herself that she had no business appreciating such finery in her current situation, she cleared her throat as the woman approached. "Um, hello... Are you lost?" She couldn't see any other reason a woman of this caliber would be in this part of town.

------------------

Back inside, Finn noticed the two newcomers. "I should have made cookies or something. Holy hell, is there a housing shortage in this town or something?"

Arren nodded somewhat in appreciation.

"Ah, yes, everyone has their secrets, I certainly can appreciate that." Arren said as he inspected the inside of his room. "In my line of work everyone has their secrets. I used to work in some pretty heavy stuff before I started working for Tech Con." He said, grinning.

"I used to work for the Aschen Ministry of Defense running counter-terrorism and intelligence work, I also worked skiptraces for the Chairman of the Military, and in later years, worked with the Office of the President. When the Empire took power i left all that to spend more time pursuing my own interests."

"This will do nicely." He said, nodding in approval as his gaze went back outside. "My associate is here." He said, smiling to Finn. "Secrets... I tell you what? Could you and Meg maybe help Cal and I unload our truck?" He asked, gesturing to the pickup that was parked on the street. "I've got some equipment that needs to be unloaded." He said with a smile as he turned towards the stairs.

"Got a lot of stuff I need to unload, and then I need to make some phone calls." Arren said, moving towards the staircase so he could make his way down and towards the truck.

As Callandra made her way up the stairs towards Illara and Meg, she would first find herself being assaulted by the woman and her business card, she grimaced at the sight as she heard the words 'Miss universe' being uttered, and gently pushed the presented card away.

"Uhh.. thanks not interested." She said, looking towards Meg.

"Are you the Landlord? I trust everything's in order? I'd like to get out of this infernal dress and into something more comfortable... My associate should have covered everything with you. We're with Tech Con Group, I'm Senior Captain Callandra Henderson, and my associate is Security Chief Arren Valaj, We're with Tech Con Group." She said, giving Illara another strange look before she turned back to Meg.

"I'm going to get changed, and then Arren and I have some equipment that we're needing to offload." She said, gesturing to the pickup truck parked on the road, the one Arren emerged from.

"I'll pay everyone in cubits, fifty each.. it's nothing too intensive, I just don't want the stuff stolen." She said, taking off her high heels one at a time.

She offered the pair a smile. "Any questions?"

Illara fumed at the rejection, and turned on her heel to lug her heavy apparatus inside without another word. She slipped her card deftly into Meg's pocket as she passed rather than put it away again.

She strolled past an empty bedroom or two, poking her head briefly into each one. Despite spacious floorplans and large windows, none seemed to meet her expectations, and she continued to scout the first floor. Her eyes lit up when she noticed a door that led to a cramped storage space beneath the staircase. Opening it, she nodded in satisfaction to herself, tossing her heavy case into the room with a loud CLUNK. She knelt and pressed a storage panel on the outer case, pulling an extension cord out and extracting a couple of entangled personal items. After a brief search, she located an outlet around the corner and plugged the cord in, leaving the other end threaded under the door to her new digs.

She returned to the unfurnished space and closed the door behind her, and soon after the faint chsk of a carbonated beverage being opened sounded softly from within. A thin ribbon of smoke snaked it's way out the top of the doorframe shortly after, bringing with it the elusive spicy smell of the cheap black cigarillos popular in the slummier corner stores of Vargeras. Occasional snatches of a one-sided conversation with a tinny digital falsetto are audible from within.

"....No more damn kimchee, still can't get the smell out of the saddlebags... Etienne can get bent, he still owes me for that thing in Lupaix.."

Finn nodded to Arren. ā€œI canā€™t speak for Meg, but I donā€™t mind helping you guys move in. Itā€™ll give me a chance to get to know my new roommaā€”ā€œ he trailed off as he watched the women enter the house. His eyes moved over first Meg, then the young courier and finally Arrenā€™s associate. If he could blush, Finnā€™s cheeks would have been rosy and hot. He cleared his throat as Illara moved past him to check out the rooms upstairs. He watched her climb the stairs before turning his attention to the other woman. Leaning closer to Arren, he swallowed. ā€œIā€™ve never lived with so many women beforeā€¦ā€ He trailed off once more as Illara descended the stairs once more. Lowering his voice, he grinned at Arren. ā€œWeā€™re outnumbered.ā€

As Illara chose the closet under the stairs as her own, Finn blinked, looking over to Meg to see if she had been paying attention.

Meg had seen, alright, but she was also sizing up the new arrival. Unlike Illara, who Meg instantly liked, this new woman made Megā€™s defenses rise. Her first impression was that the woman was pushy, and almost rude with the way that sheā€™d dismissed Illara. She didnā€™t like the formal introduction. In a way, ā€œSenior Captain Callandra Hendersonā€ made her feel like the help.

Her eyes narrowed as she glanced over to Arrenā€™s vehicle. ā€˜Oh no, no, no, lady,ā€™ she thought to herself. ā€˜We are all equals in this houseā€¦ā€™

ā€œIā€™m Meg,ā€ she said aloud, not bothering to hold her hand out. ā€œI own this house. I trust yourā€¦ associateā€¦ informed you that you will have roommates here. I trust that wonā€™t be a problem for you. So far, itā€™s Finn and I, but it looks like Miss Illa will be joining us as well.ā€ Her brow lifted as she looked toward the closet under the stairs, making a mental note to speak with the girl about paying less rent if she wasnā€™t going to be utilizing a bedroom. ā€œAnd Finnā€™s cat.ā€

She was half tempted to tell the woman to move her own stuff in, claiming that she had her own things to doā€¦ but in honesty, she wanted to know what sort of equipment was going to be entering her house, and what better way to find out than by helping to move it in. With a sigh, she shrugged. ā€œYeah, sure, Iā€™ll help.ā€

Perhaps the attitude was typical of Aschen Arrogance, or perhaps it was stress, either way Cally gave Meg a sidelong glance before she relented slightly in her attitude.

"I understand, Meg... I really do." She said, looking up to the house. "My Associate hasn't really told me much, and I don't really have a problem with roommates. Please understand, I'm a very busy person. You see; I'm in charge of all of Tech Con's security on this planet, and it's a very big responsibility. I don't think you would understand but it can be very stressful." She said, making a face.

"Maybe I'm a little hostile.. but I've got a lot on my plate." She said, nodding. "Cats are alright, I don't mind them." She said, before making her way to the truck, just as Arren was coming towards the front door.

"Hey Cal, make sure you don't leave the disruptors in the truck, last thing we need is someone stealing them." Arren said, while Callandra was nearing the truck, at which point Arren turned to Meg and made a face.

"That's Cal, she's my boss... she can be a little... Intense... but what can you say? She is Admiral McGregor's ex wife..." Arren commented, shrugging to Meg as he too started towards the truck. Turning back to Meg he somewhat gave a nervous chuckle.

"I'd have my shit in a wad too if I had to deal with someone like him, stuck up prude who gets what he wants because Daddy's the Emperor." Arren said, out of Cally's earshot of course.

Once he made his comment, his body quickly turned to move to the truck, while Callandra was coming back towards the house, two large carrying cases in hand. Aschen disruptor rifles from the markings on the case, something for Meg, would be easily identifiable.

Once Arren made it to the truck, he grabbed a large case that contained computer components, and a second case that contained a power generator.

"This'll keep the lights on." He said to Meg. "City's kinda been... having power outages."

Bright headlights illuminated the dark, dank streets of Lutetia as Callandra made her way back towards the apartment that she had reserved for her stay here in Lutetia.

The soft reflection of the gauge lights and the various radio equipment played across Cally's face with a soft blue-green hue as slender fingers wrapped around the steering wheel of her white Tech Con issued Toyota HiLux.

The truck's radio chimed a few more moments, before she turned the volume down, and then her hand shifted to raise the volume on the music radio, the sounds of Aschen pop filling the speakers.

"Gods this city is a dump..." The young woman commented before she came to a stop at a red light, the car engine idling as the brakes squealed as the car came to a stop.

Her gaze flitted left, and then right as she leaned back into her seat. The white truck was the only vehicle on the road this time of night, a tingling sensation of paranoia crept along her back as the young woman surveyed her surroundings. She took a moment to smooth her khaki BDU outfit, before she leaned back in the seat once more.

"Fool" he thought to himself limping down the empty streets of Lutetia City. The cold wind fluttering his dark green cloak and stinging his face. "Should have just ended quick and easy, no trouble, no harm...to me anyways." The Ranger's hip throbbed where it had been hammered to the hard ground. Bruises were forming all over his body, scrapes and road-rash covered various parts as well. His clothes were torn in places, the same places he was bleeding for the most part.

He was dizzy, disoriented, and weakened. Sooner or later, he would be picked out as a target by some rather fortunate small-time criminals wandering the same roads. Going solo had it's downsides. As the battered man approached the intersection, the green light blinking to a red, a miracle caught his eye. "Impossible?!" He nearly smiled. There, in the middle of the road stood the gallant figure of white pickup truck.

The green clad man made his way to the driver's side of the car, trying to put on the friendliest look he could manage. Hoping the glint from the hilts of the rather large dual knives at his hips were well covered by his cloak, he rapped on the window with his raw knuckles.

Musical beats continued to thump, that was until the woman's serenity was suddenly interrupted by the sound of knuckles on glass;

The woman started, and let out an audible yelp, her right hand moved down towards a concealed Disruptor pistol, and slender fingers wrapped around the weapon's stock, while her thumb moved across the power switch. The weapon then armed with a subtle yet audible whine.

The second movement came with the cracking of her window. The window motor whirred and the glass pulled down several inches. Warm air billowed out from the cracked window as Callandra turned her head to see who was on the other side.

Her blue eyes briefly scanned the robed figure, while her right hand pulled the weapon free from it's holster, and she discreetly held it down by her thigh.

"Can I help you?" She asked, hoping that it was just some tourist asking for directions.

Her left hand moved back onto the steering wheel, using it's controls to turn the radio off, leaving only the muted chattering of her Tech Con CB radio.

Smart, definitely far from naive, if not friendly. This woman was giving off bad vibes, literally. He could here the low hum of a weapon of some sort that uses energy...probably a stun gun, energy blaster or baton of sorts. Furthermore, the female's movement that obviously resembled pulling something from it's holster and holding it down close to underside of the car seat didn't help the Ranger ignore the fact she was armed.

"No sudden movements, easy talking, non-aggressive presence, etc." He cleared his throat. "Hello ma'am, my name is Alexander Autry. You may have heard of me, and if you have, I'm sure that you are aware that I am no criminal and wish you no harm." The man looked left and right, turned around. No sign of anyone. "As you can probably see...I've been in quite a...predicament of sorts and still am. How? The streets of Lutetia City at night can be quite...dangerous. Obviously, this usually isn't much of a problem for me, I'm able to fend for myself for the most part...and I'm usually not one to ask for help..."

The Tech Con Security chief continued to survey the man while listening to his plea. She kept the weapon out of sight, and was ready to use it at a moment's notice.

The Disruptor was a staple in both the Aschen Military and Civilian markets, a weapon that fired charged particle beams was a weapon that was eponymous with the Aschen, whom themselves were quite technologically advanced.

She had been watching the Ranger almost as much as he had been observing her movements. It didn't take much to note that he had been wounded, how that came to be remained a mystery to the woman. She pondered a moment and assessed his stance.

"Lutetia can indeed be very dangerous at night, not really a place for someone to be traveling alone at night, especially on foot. Begs to question just exactly what you were doing and why should I help you?" She asked, still keeping her eyes both on him and subtly keeping track of where his hands were going.

"Cut to the chase, you need a ride." She said, making a face. "And how do I know this isn't a ploy to either rob or rape me? You said it yourself... this city can be very dangerous at night." She said, her accent unmistakably Aschen; this meant it was unlikely she knew who he was.

"You can call me Cally, I'm going to guess that you need a ride to the Hospital or something."

Alexander broke into a smile, he couldn't help it. "Haven't been here much, have you?" he gave a shrug. "You're technically right, this could all be a plan to do something else. But factoring in my habits, and lack of stupidity, I'd assume you could rule those possibilities out. Got a phone? I've got a few trustworthy people you could ring, I've got a bit of a reputation. I do mercenary work sometimes, know a lot for someone with my social status. I've got much to give, believe it or not."

The ranger tossed half a gold coin into the automobile through the slit in the window. "Hope that's worth something to you. As for why I'm in need of help? One word should sum it up, 'supernaturals.' Supernaturals with to much time and anger to be exact." Alexander took another look around their area, this time he swore he could see shadows...moving.

He turned back to the woman. "So, know anyone in town? They'll know my name."

As he slid the coin through the window, she watched as it fell to the floorboard. "I don't need your money." She quipped, before she nodded to the empty passenger seat.

"I'm going to go on a leap of faith, get in, I'll give you a ride. No sudden moves though, or I'll vaporize you." She said, now bringing the pistol into view.

"I'm the security chief with Tech Con, so no, I move around a lot, I'm just here on a business venture. I'm an Aschen.. whether or not that means anything to you, but I'll help you." She added finally, the lock clicked signalling the doors were unlocked, and she nodded once more.

"I don't know anyone in town other than my work associate, and he too is an Aschen, we're both here from Wing City, where Tech Con has it's HQ for this world." Cally added, bringing the car gear into park.

"You've answered all but one question, where do you need to go?" She asked, still watching him. She figured if he tried anything, she could rely on her military training and weapons to handle herself if things came to that. If he stole the car it could be tracked, thus she was confident that she could prevail if he tried anything.

His smile faded a bit, drawing the edges of his lips back to their default position. "I suppose I was quick to judge. Naive it is. Alexander made his way to the passenger side door, opening and closing it after he sat himself in the seat. "I don't doubt you'd shoot me up at a moment's notice ma'am. As for a place to go...Luskonios if you may." He gave a sigh "Yes, the richer part of Lutetia, it always seems to surprise people where I reside..."

The ranger glanced down at the gear stick. "I wouldn't have done that if I were you. Step on it, and we might have a chance." The man leaned back in his seat, closing his eyes.
