Description

Name: Calvance Stelare

Age: 17

Nicknames: Reaper of Hearts, Angel, Shadow Reaper

Appearance: He’s about 6’ tall with black hair and pale, bright blue eyes, black wings with a 10’ wing span.
Species: Avian (Angel)

Magic/Powers/Special Abilities: His species gives him the ability to fly with his huge wings. He was trained with the reapers of Gialpha and is known for his skill with darkness and shadow magic.

Notable Traits: Calvance has a dark sense of humor and an insatiable appetite for romance.

History: Born on Gialpha, Calvance was a member of the elite warriors known as The Reapers. Not the traditional style that collected souls, but rather a skilled group of avians who were trained in various forms of magic and used scythes as their primary weapon. It was an honor to be chosen to be a Reaper at such a young age and another honor to be sent to Origin as part of a program to improve Gialpha’s relations with other planets. Of course, he had to bring his pet ferret, Eddy, along.

Notable Equipment: A powerful, enchanted scythe that can channel his magic powers.

Mentality: It’s hard to get a good read on Calvance’s personality. He comes off as confident and friendly but will be the first to admit when he’s wrong or doesn’t know something. He is usually very disciplined but also knows how to have a good time.

Fears: Drowning, his wings make it hard to swim. Being alone.

So begins...

Luckily the class was rather dark in the back and Calvance was able to use the shadows to teleport in unnoticed. He quickly took an open seat, doing his best to keep his wings tucked back so that they weren't in anyone's way, and caught the last part of the lecture as the wizard in the front of the class pointed out all the parts of the orc. Cal took notes and everything as he watched the wizard, and snickered as he watched the werecat loose her mind trying to catch the pointer. Finally, the wizard got to the point where he asked if anyone had any questions.

Cal, being an avid warrior, could think of only one thing to ask. Without even raising his hand, he spoke up.

"Yeah, I have a question. If someone were wielding, say a scythe, where would the best place be to strike it, if one wanted to deliver a death blow?" He asked with a tone of confidence to his voice that was enough to make others notice that he hadn't been there earlier.

Cliff, who had been making another attempt to dismiss the wolf ears and tail which normally were not a part of his human form but sometimes stuck around if he was flustered, or emotional, or just at random, also payed attention as best as he could to the class. Well, it was eccentric to be sure, and...wait, Theri just promised him meat.

At least Cliff was already dressed as well so it was not continueing. Well, in his rush, he just put on the jacket and shorts, but it covered enough of his body to be fine...though sometimes the jacket might start to slip off a little, it would only reveal his upper chest, which while might look boyish and meek on first glance, contained tough and well trained muscles. So that let him concentrate on Theri's words more.

HIs expression of embarrassment, contempt, and annoyance washed away almost instantly at that. Then again, this probably had to be something a roommate of his would be able to do. After all, it was only a matter of time before that scene happened again for them, and then again, and it probably happened a few times already as far as they knew. Werewolves were cursed with their transformations, not only causing people to distrust them and view them as beasts, but also for the inconvienence and embarrassment it caused.

However, it was made up for with incredibly strength, speed, and ability even while in their human forms. In their werewolf form, it got multiplied, and because of that Werewolves were something that people could admire in storybooks.

Cliff sat next to Theri while thinking about meat. "Yummy delicious steak. Yummy delicious ste....Orc meat?"

But was subsequently brought back to reality by Orc Meat. He looked back at Theri with a note. "Werewolves can eat a lot of stuff. Technically, anyone can eat Orc meat but...well, you probably want it prepared by a proper chef first. I mean, think about it. Its Orc Meat. You don't know where it was! A long time ago Werewolves might have eaten Orc meat as is, when the standards of living were lower, but now? Not unless it was absolutely necessary".

He said that while he looked at the Orc in question, including its size and two swords. Cliff gazed at it...and sniffed the air a little, before coming to a conclusion.

"I think that particular type of Orc is an Orc Berserker. Since, Berserkers are known to either dual wield swords or use huge, heavy weapons. I mean, it could be a normal Orc but...its really big for an Orc. Anyways, if I recall correctly, Orcs have tough thick skin, and aggressive personalities, so it is best to either go for the joints and vitals, like the neck, ankles, wrists, eyes, and such to fight them, or use magic at range...unless, you know, you have werewolf strength. Then you can just tear them apart. But with Berserkers...even then, still probably better to fight at range".

But as Theri said his answers, Cliff finally broke out into laughter.

"Are you sure Orcs can attend this class? A lot of the base ones are known to be stupid....oh, wait! They look like pigs right? We could take one in as a pet!"

It seems Theri hit Cliff's funnybone with his comments, so much that Cliff didnt register Cal sneaking in and asking a question at all.

As Traf continued his lesson the poor werecat, {named Linda} went totally berzerk and was currently close to dropping the only chandiler from the ceiling with her weight as she endless sought the red dot Traf had her going for. Traf himself paid more attention to the class as first Therion, then Cal, then finally Cliff asked their questions.

The first series of questions were from Therion. The young magi was a good student and got high marks from Traf mostly because he came out of the class more experienced on how NOT to make and care for runes most days. Traf was nodding at the first question, forcing the Orc to arttend a class, "yes yes, a ..... Wait no no" Traf seemed to come to his senses and shook his head. "This critter is simply here for demonstration purposes." He pointed out a few more areas of the orc, naming them the heel, the buttocks, and the not so funny bones before Therion's next question came in

Traf for a moment looked thoughtful, not noticing the crumbling bits of plaster raining down around him, dinking off the head of the Orc as Linda struggled to stay on the ceiling chaisng the red laser dot. Traf started nodding, "Turn an orc into a minnow then accidently turn a minnow into an orc ? Thats a possiblity we can work on later. At this moment this critter needs to learn some manners"

At that moment when Traf pointed the laser dot at the floor, or rather, Cliff's lap Linda let go of the ceiling and slammed down onto the werewolf with a sudden THUD

Traf of course went right to the next question as the Orc looked sick, well if one could say the green skin went pale with a cold flash as sicker than normal for a green skinned thing, then there was some upsides to this class. The next question was from Cal, a good student just like Therion. With heavy thinking the High Wizard nodded. "For demonstrational viewing I will show you." Conjuring out of nothing a farmers scyth Traf then went through the finer points of holding the oversized weedwhacker. Traf didnt even NOTICE whatsoever that Cal was a few minutes late. Half his class were either laughing at Linda and Cliff, some of which were singing before the two were critters glared them into quietness

The other half of the class was watching carefully as Traf demonstrated with the Orc the finer pooints of combat, in this case how not to get killed using such a massive weedwhacker. Finally Traf called Cal up to the front and handed him the sycth. SDince the orc was magically defended for the class it allowed the students first hand combat experience. At least until Traf brought out the cherry bombs and handgrenades. Traf was giving each student a chance wit the Orc of proper defense and attack movements.

The Orc grunted something at Traf who pointed the stick at the thing "You mind your manners" The stsick, still letting out the red laser dot, was all over the Orc, which then ended up flat on its back as poor Linda couldnt stop herself and darted for the shiny dot. Trampling the orc getting for the dot as Traf nodded at Linda turn was completed.

Finally Cliff asked his questions, the first of which was Orc Meat. Traf shook his head "No no, dont get any ideas, too much gristle, not enough meat." A snap of the fingers and the Orc was back on its feet, both swords in hand. "Take note as I said, of the green skin, the skin would only be this green if not well fed."

Again the question of since the orcs looks like pigs if it could be kept as a pet, the Orc looked upset at the mere thought but Traf was shaking his head, "No no, that wont do, this is a combat class after all not a butcher shop" Little did Traf recall that he did demonstrate how to chop up an orc like a butcher would.

With both Linda and Cal stnading next to him he allowed the two to return to their seats as he conjured the Orc away. "Now class, Have you ever uh.... considered being a squrriel ?" He asked nochalantly as he was once more dressed in his natural blue robes and pointed blue hat

Theri kept laughing, the class had almost dissolved into Chaos, the threat of High Wizard Traf's ire the only thing keeping most of the class politely paying attention. Traf's confusion, and Linda and Cliff's antics soon had the magi literally rolling on the floor laughing his proverbial ass off.

Normally Therion would have joined the class in practicing the finer points of offense and defense of Orcs, however he had had enough of Orc combat earlier that morning, and the boy figured it would take a stronghold of extremely well-bred Orcs to create an issue for him.

Thus Theri contented himself in laughing harder than he had all week, certainly partially at his roommate's expense, but he figured a few steaks would have Cliff more than forgive him. The teacher underwent another costume change and posed an odd question, well it would've been off had it not been Traf asking.

The question immediately sobered the magi up, as he was not keen on being turned into a squirrel, especially after Traf lost a student he had turned into a newt. Therion was pretty certain the newt student had been eaten by Kamikaze; not that the magi would ever report his favorite teacher. The flying rat, however, was another story altogether.

The boy double checked his shielding, adding another layer that should hopefully keep his form static, though in a magical arm-wrestling match between Theri and Traf, High Wizard Traf certainly one. Therion could only hope Traf was joking, which he doubted, or that he wouldn't concentrate on turning him into a squirrel.

The wizard often slung spells off without thinking, which made them just weak enough that Theri could usually repulse them. For good measure though, Theri decided to strike preemptively. With a flick of his wand, he threw a polymorph spell at Kamikaze to turn the owl into a squirrel. "Great question, Kamikaze, thoughts?"

Cal went back to his seat after the master wizard had demonstrated and helped him in the finer points of orc slaying. He didn't exactly like the scythe that the old man had conjured for him, but didn't want to be rude and point out that he had his own weapon that he preferred.

He took his seat again when the teacher asked about turning into a squirrel. With that there was a twitching and chirping growl sound that came from inside his backpack.

"Damn it Eddy, you were supposed to stay in the dorm, not sneak into my backpack." He whispered in a harsh tone to the bag. He unzipped it and pulled out a snow white ferret with beady black eyes who crawled up to his shoulder and started making cute sounds in his ear.

"No he's not going to turn you into a squirrel." Cal whispered right as he looked up just in time see another boy turn an owl into a squirrel.

"Back in the bag!" He said in a louder voice and the ferret ran down his leg back to the back pack.

At the apparent chaos that had begun to surround him, CLiff could be seen sighing in relief. Why was that, one might ask? Well simple. Cliff was a Werewolf, a species with a very strong transformation ability. Even an exceptional wizard like Traf could not turn him into something else. Maybe it was possible to force Cliff into his werewolf form, or out of his werewolf form though, but he was pretty much safe from being turned into anything else.

However, it suddenly happened. A werecat fell on top of him. And then, after that...well...

"HISSSSS!"

"GRRRRRRRR"

Although Cliff was a Werewolf, and not a Weredog, he reacted exactly like a Dog would to a cat and growled. There werecat in question, after hissing and scratching, would jump into Theri with the clear intention, desire, and will to get away from the natural predator. Cliff unfortunately temporarily lost control due to shock and natural enemy, and jumped on Theri chasing her until...well, the shock ended and he came back to his senses.

Thankfully, he managed to hold it in and not turn into a werewolf in front of everyone, but instead kept himself in human form and did not totally destroy the clothes he was wearing. This was a very good thing, in his opinion, since he did not want to have another incident.

After he calmed down and jumped back into his chair, he noticed the ferret, Eddy. "He looks so fluffy...and tasty..."

At that point, there was probably a few alarm bells that should have rung in Theri's head. There was another thing he forgot to do, aside from letting Cliff change. And that was getting Cliff breakfast. A werewolf without having eaten breakfast....could become quite scary.

Cliff licked his lips as his hunger began to manifest in his body language and he showed clear signs of hunger.

Seeing how Linda and Cliff were reacting to each other before Linda pretty much landed the orc flat on its back before Traf magicked it away, Traf had a pipe in hand and was puffing it madly, creating a big white smoke cloud around his head as Therion turned Kamakazi into a squrriel, to which Traf reacted in a rather comical matter when it came to the matter of food, "No! No no, no eating classmates!" That said he whacked Kamakazi, who promptly turned back into an owl and at the same time upchucked a newt, who was a former classmate at one point or another

the newt gave a weird look at the class and KAPOOF was back to normal plain old Ben, who was infact the substitute teacher when Traf pretty much got blasted at a local bar, the teachers all agreed to lock him down in his own runes for a week to get him sober, but it didnt do any good whatsoever

The first question was posed, and he heard a growling, "I said, no eating fellow classmates!" Traf said, at those words he tapped on the desk with his stick, now a normal wooden thing right out of some antique shop. As he did so a ferret sized desk and chair, {complete with sunlamp, and full wifi hookup!} Was suddenly on Cal's own desk for Eddy. Apparently Traf thought Eddy was a former student, but try as he might no spells worked to turn the ferret into a human, at least he was a student in Traf's eyes, stuck as a ferret.

Then came the question of being a squrriel, since none of the class wanted to go through that Traf nodded, "Very well then I supposed being a bird is also out of the question...., Is that the lunch bell I hear ?" As he spoke locking runes formed over the doors briefly as the lunch bell did indeed go off like a gong or sixteen as Traf continured "very well, Class, you are dismissed for the rest of the day.... oh hello Ben where have ytou been ?"

"Investigating the interior of an owl" Came the unhappy reply. Ben was only there a WEEk before turned into a NEWT and eaten by an OWL that was named Kamakazi, Ben figured he could sue, but then decided he wanted to be a zookeeper so he kept his mouth shut at least until Traf asked how Kamakazi was "He's medically sound far as I can tell."

Traf waved the dork off and addressed his class, thankfully they had learned enough on how to survive lunch at the very least. "After lunch students I'd like for certain parties to apologise to one another. Therion, I shall require your aid in rune care later after school, Linda, Cliff, detention" Of course Traf had absolutely NO FRIGGING IDEA that it was HIS OWN FREAKING FAULT that Linda tackled Cliff in the first place.

At least Eddy wasnt gonna get eaten.

The runes on the doors faded allowing the students to leave as Traf went behind the desk and sat down. .... way down.... "Now where did I put that screwdriver ?" A few seconds of GRINKA, GRINKA, GRINKA and Traf was seated properly behind his massive desk that made the USS Enterprise aircraft carrier look like a tugboat.

Out of sheer bordom Traf began another round of Cats Cradle, this time with water runes, gas runes, and what looked like ice runes

The lunch bell rang, signaling that class was over for now and it was time to eat. "Oh crap!" Theri had meant to leave class a little early to ensure he procured enough steaks to satisfy Cliff, and now he would have to race to get there in time. High Wizard Traf informed Theri that he would be given the privilege of some after school Rune-work, and the magi acknowledged him with a wild grin. He didn't bother to say anything, as he felt their student-teacher bond was an unspoken one, but rather he nodded acknowledgment before heading to lunch.

Of course, now that Traf had given Cliff detention, he might not be so angry with Therion's callousness anymore. The magi figured he'd better not risk it, and sprinted out of class, knocking Ben down in the process. Theri barely noticed, Ben wasn't particularly skilled and thus to Therion the boy might as well have been invisible. He could hear faint complaints from a specter, "First I'm eaten, and now this!?" However, the boy simply couldn't be bothered with nobodies, and he hurried away.

The magi did, however, notice Cal for the first time all class, which prompted him to think that maybe he had skipped most if not all of class. If he hadn't been so preoccupied laughing, he may have seen Cal practicing scythe-work on the Orc, however between all the chaos and Theri's own self-absorption, he simply hadn't.

A bit of a crowd was forming as students rushed out of the classroom, which was easily enough avoided as the magi simply ran seven feet off the ground, he wasn't sure if Cliff would make it through as easily, certainly the werewolf could push everyone aside and barrel after Therion; but the magi doubted his roommate would, the wolf was too polite. Therion contemplated coating the ground with ice, further exacerbating the mass of students rushing to be the first in line, but he decided that perhaps it wasn't worth the potential trouble he may end up in for it. The magi had already faced a week's suspension for freezing another student solid, and he wasn't keen on spending more time doing absolutely nothing.

"What! I got here, literally as fast as I could." A line was already forming, and Therion found himself extremely frustrated at the sheer number of students at the Academy. "So many rats with an inkling of power thinking they can make something of themselves..." Theri simply stood in line, there was little else to do, and he prayed the cafeteria wouldn't run out of suitable bribes before he got there.

When it was finally time to order, most of the good food had been picked over, but three racks of spare rib, a small top sirloin steak, eight pork chops, and an entire grilled halibut later, Therion thought he probably had enough food. Luckily, the magi did work for the school often enough and even moonlighted as an adventurer from time to time, so he had the money to spare. Still, I was hoping to buy a polymorph potion and slip it into someone's drink... Therion sighed, looking for his roommate so that he may deliver his formal apology and/or bribe.

Cal was quick to get out of the class using the shadows to teleport to other dark places on campus without having to travel by foot or air. He still wasn't familiar with all of the places on campus to get food, so he decided to go to one of the snack-bar style food carts that he passed earlier. As he walked out of the nearest shadow, Eddy crawled out of his back pack and onto his shoulders. He started making squeaking noises into his ear.

"Yes, now you do have to go to that class with me every day." Cal argued.

More squeaking.

"Well, that's what you get for not staying in the dorm like I told you."

More squeaking.

"It doesn't matter if the other students can't understand you, I can and so can the teacher."

More squeaking followed by Eddy returning to the bag.

"No need for that kind of language. You lick yourself with that mouth?"

Cal walked up to the food cart and just as he was about to order something, he found himself bathed in a golden light and felt his body getting teleported somewhere. The golden light was a bit painful for him given his use of dark magics.

The moment that the lunch bell rang, all thoughts flew out of Cliff's mind as his hunger took over and he raced after behind Theri. When it came to werewolves, it was important they got a good amount of food. That was why Cliff often went and had four meals a day, maybe five, and sometimes/frequently had snacks inbetween. This was also why werewolves tended to have more energy though and could be so physical, so there was also that.

He tried to follow Theri, but then saw two massive flashes of light...one in the far distance, and one just up ahead, that got him to stop...sort of...Cliff ended up tumbling right into the crowd like a bowling ball into bowling pins. That got a strike, for that matter. However, cliff was quick to recover and jumped up, weeving through and under people's legs to keep up with Theri. Of course, his stomach was registing the person in question as Food Source, but Cliff was not consciously aware of that.

Eventually, Cliff found his way to Theri...although, the commotion of such a happening could be heard a bit behind him. "Whew. People were really good today. There were quite a number that were able to successfully dive out of the way".

Cliff then said that as he started to consume food. "Ahh, I can barely remember what happened during class now. This is why breakfast is important, it totally wrecks with my memory. Well, if I get reminded about something I might remember it, so it should be safe...probably. I remember the first part clearly, at least...its just the second half of the class that is a blur, when my hunger started to become unbearable".

And then, he looked at Theri and added something else.

"...although, I do remember smelling food in the classroom....I wonder if someone brought any snacks..."

If Eddy heard that, he might just shiver in fear since Cliff was talking about him. BUt now he was happily eating, although given the way he acted and reacted, it was possible Theri might think it was just absolutely required.

Ollie had finally finished his latest masterpiece of his Bird related magic, specifically the summoning and binding of a new Bird Familiar. He was sure he had perfected it this time, the lost masterpiece of the great Bird Mage of the Caikora Continent, the legendary spell that would summon a Champion or even Hero class bird!

Ollie woould use this spell to surely gain a new friend for sure! He was positive it would work! And then, he could soar the skies on the back of one of the greatest birds of the universe! It was brilliant, brilliant! With this, he was now sure it would work. Of course, the initial summoning ritual had to be done before he could summon him freely.

And so, Ollie put a drop of his own blood into the center of the Magic Array, and began chanting in early Okan. "Asmoria! Dessero, Dessero, Dessero! Magaris, fil thennem dei! Rozullen morus vei! Cillio! Cillio! Cillio! Astora yumagis dei!"

He said that as he did a series of arm and hand movements, before slamming his hands together and shouting the final line in the common language.

"Now come forth, great bird of the skies! Come forth, Champion Wing!"

The golden flash of light that had pulled Cal away from his lunch placed him down now in some unknown part of the school he had never been before.

He looked around and by the look of the pointed roof, it seemed clear they were in one of the towers of the school, judging by the birds he assumed it was the roost that he had heard about for all the birds that assisted students.

"What the hell am I doing..." He cut himself off, seeing the young boy in front of him. There was something off about him. Cal's scythe appeared in his hand out of nowhere and it had a glowing dark purple aura. His eyes began to glow as well.

"Why am I here, did you bring me here?" He questioned as he pointed the scythe at him. It didn't look like he was going to attack him, but rather like he was accusing him of something.

It might have seemed a little bit scary given the size and age difference as well as the huge black wings. Oddly, though the boy seemed to be smiling

"Why are you looking at me like that?"

"Woo hoo! It worked!" were the first words to leave Ollie's mouth the moment that Cal arrived, as he jumped forward with the intention to hug what appeared...that was, before a scythe was placed in front of him with a purplish aura. Meanwhile, the tool he had used to cast this magic, a feather that looked perfect and majestic and attracted the eyes just by being out, seemed to glow a golden and white aura and repelled the aura caused by the scythe.

"Ah! Ah! Right! My name is Ollie, and I summoned you here using this Magic Array on the ground! It is specifically designed to summon and bind a new Bird Familiar to me! You see, its power will let me summon a legendary Bird Champion, and it is extremely advanced! Oh, to think I finally replicated it perfectly and got it to work! Hurray!"

Suddenly, it dawned on Ollie...he had no introduced himself.

"Ah, my name is Ollie Luna, a student at Astrius Academy! Have you heard of it? Oh oh, I promise you will have a lot of fun here!"

As he said that, almost as if it was specifically set up to happen that way, several birds flew out from behind Cal and past him, as they flew all around the room. One of them was even the incredibly rare rainbow bird.

"A bird familiar? I think you made a mistake, I'm not a bird." Cal said a bit more calm now that he was getting a grip on the situation. The feather that was glowing and repelling the aura from the scythe got his attention, he knew it must be some sort of artifact like his scythe.

He forced the scythe to disappear and the glowing stopped.

"I think there must have been a mistake of some kind, I am a student at the academy. I'm not a bird of any kind, regardless of what my wings may suggest. I think it may have been that feather there that brought me here, not the spell you cast. Anyway, my name is Calvance, but you can call me Cal if you like. I'm a new student here from Gialpha originally."

As Cal spoke, Ollie slipped the feather back into his sleeve as Cal spoke. However, the aura itself did not disappear until after the scythe did as well, indicating some sort of reaction or connection. Ollie knew what it likely was, but decided not to go into it if Cal didn't. It was not something he often used, at least in front of others.

"No no. You have bird wings right? And this spell was very exact! It was definently to summon the ultimate Bird Familiar, something or someone known as the Bird Champion....perhaps, it is a different word on your world then? Languages, translations, they can be tricky if you are not careful".

As he said that, it appeared Ollie was still not convinced at what Cal said. Ollie's bare feet went across the floor as he went over to a desk and took a large notebook from it, turning around to show him it. Notably, the formula...the magic array...on the ground was identical to the one in the notebook, though it appeared parts had been missing and were then calculated. If Cal were to look over the calculations though, it was clear there were no mistakes...so there was no reason yet understood as to why he would be called. At least, until he brought up the feather.

"Ah yes! This definently confirms it also! I can't really go into detail....but this feather was given to me by someone I admire, before they told me to come here...and you are already a student? Perfect! Clearly this is fate working on us! Yes, it all adds up! Oh, you say you are new? Maybe you have some of the same classes as me! This would make everything even better! Then you could be with me more and the teachers wont make a fuss about having a familiar in the classroom!"

It seemed that Ollie had not percieved Cal's words, at least not the important parts Cal wanted to convey, at all.

Something that Ollie mentioned stuck with Cal.

"Wait did you say Bird Champion? Shit, I'm a member of a group from my planet known as the Reapers. It's a group of warriors that's only comprised of Avians, winged angel-like people like myself." He spoke as he checked the magic formula written on the notebook and the one on the floor.

"I don't understand though, your work seems to be powered by wind and air magic. While Avians on my world have innate wind power, I myself have almost never used such magic. I primarily use shadow and darkness based magic so it shouldn't have brought me here." He said trying to figure out what went wrong, not considering that it was possible that nothing did.

He looked at how excited this kid was getting about having him around. He gave him a genuine smile.

"Look, Ollie, I don't know about being a familiar, but it kinda sounds like a pet type of situation, so I'll make this as clear as I can. I'm not going to be a pet in any way, I have my own classes to take here so I can't be following you around all day, I will however be your friend and if you need someone to be your champion as you called it, it is my sworn duty to help those in need if called upon to do so." He put out his hand to shake.

"Sound fair?"

"Nope nope! Thats not just it you see!" he said as Cal spoke about his people, about the Reapers and the Avians, and about how they are just winged angel-like people. As he said that, he quickly went around Cal and pointed at his wings, and even tried to pat and touch parts of his back so Cal would understand where he was referring to as he spoke. "You see, flight is not so easy, and neither are wings. To fly, birds have a very specific set up of bones that allow their wings to connect to them. Although maybe, there is a small chance it works differently on an alien world, I do believe it would be the same. Therefore, to say you are just winged angel-like is almost certainly completely incorrect. After all, those wings are a normal part of you. They are connected to your skeletal structure, and you have a different muscle and bone formation then that of humans".

As he said that, a bird flew over and Ollie raised his hand to let it sit on in. Birds normally would not behave that way around people, and due to their sensitivity even Cal's people probably could not do it normally. Although Ollie might seem a bit insane and crazy, he was able to manipulate his body and mana which let birds feel comfortable enough to land on him.

"You see, in addition, birds tend to be crazy sensitive because they have to be aware of their wingspan and such. Oh, I mean sensitive in a sensory way, not an emotional way. Your species can fly, so I am sure you experienced that feeling of being able to tell when you would and would not be able to fit through a space, and a natural sense to avoid having your wings collide into stuff? That is actually alos relevant. In order to fly properly, birds also need a lighter bone structure. Otherwise it would be impossible for their wings to carry them even for short distances, except maybe a few. Since you made no mention of being unable to fly, this clearly means you are capable of, and also I kind of just instinctively understand this stuff".

As Ollie explained all that, he gave off a delightful smile as he gave the bird a bit of birdfeed, before letting it fly off.

"As for the mana aspect of it, creatures with wings tend to have very high affinity with the Wind Attribute, though in some places it might be known as the Storm Attribute, of magic. That is why even if someone or something with wings might lack the ability to actually use it, some affinity is still there. This is considered to be likely to involve influence from the Bird God Avos, God of Wings, Wind, and Birds....ah, well, of course this is only a theory since the Gods themselves dont frequently come down and interfere with the mortal realms, especially in today's time".

Ollie seemed like he had remembered something in the middle and sort of stammered when he talked about Avos, but it wasn't too significant when one thought about it....or maybe, if one thought about it, he said something which couldn't be confirmed which therefore meant it should be information almost impossible to find. Either way though, he kept talking.

"Friends are good! I like having friends! I mean, according to the ancient texts I found, its normally very hard to find a Bird Champion so I went through all this so I could meet one, become friends with them, and have fun adventurers together, but since you apparently already live at the Academy, this is great! Oh, this is fantastic! By the way, have you gotten a dorm room then yet? Is the roommate anyone bothersome? Me, I live here. Its not usually allowed, but I take care of all the birds and the entire Roost itself singlehandedly so they let it slide. If you want to stay here, there are plenty of rooms that are not really being used right now! I am sure we can convince them! Ah, we might have the same classes anyways. I might seem young, but I am taking a lot of advanced classes".

He got so excited in waiting on the answer, he actually stood on the tips of his toes in anticipation.

This was a lot to take in all at once. The things he was saying made a lot of sense, maybe he was closer to a bird than an angel. Even the name of his race, Avians, seemed to be derived from the god Avos that he spoke of. Maybe he was a bird champion, and if he was being summoned like this, maybe it was fate.

He looked around the area. It seemed like a nice place, away from everyone and a good amount of personal space. Plus the fact that it was harder to access without the ability of flight made it feel safer.

"Well as long as it's okay if Eddy stays here with me, he doesn't eat birds so you don't have to worry about that. Come on out Eddy." He said and Eddy crawled out onto his shoulder.

"He's a rare Gialphian snow ferret. They look cute and cuddly when they're calm, but they can grow to the size of a horse and turn fierce when they feel threatened or they're protecting someone they love. But most the time he's just a fuzzy little sweetheart."

Eddy squeaked a few sounds.

"Awe am I embarrassing you?" He smiled at the ferret. He turned back to Ollie. "So, sure living up here seems like a great idea, but I'd prefer you didn't introduce me as a familiar, it gives off a pet vibe, just tell people I'm your friend."

Halitrax was growing bared of the other places he had been and had returned to the school. In this particular classroom a swirling vortex opened up and Halitrax walked out. He looked around to see there was only one other student and the teacher in the room. The teacher was going about setting things up in a display of flashy magic. This specific course caught his attention, just as a way of seeing how advanced the magic was in this school. He had seen some impressive things here so far, so a lecture on magical theory and mechanics seemed like a rather informative venture.

"Seems I'm a bit early." He said as he walked to one of the empty desks and took a seat.

Shortly after, Cal stepped out of one of the shadows.

"Oh hey Ollie, looks like we share this class too." He smiled as he took a seat.

Halitrax was able to recognize Cal as an Avian Reaper, adept in shadow magic and he wasn't exactly comfortable being in the same room as a Gialphian hero. He kept his mouth shut so as not to alert him to who he really was.

At that moment the objects and materials in the classroom settled, and Andolen began the class.

The classroom in which Andolen teaches is strangely antiquated compared to some of the others. Andolen insisted on having, among other things, Wooden pews with no magical or technological enhancement and an actual chalk blackboard of all things. The cost of these things was not cheap in this day and age.

In a swift and graceful motion, Andolen crosses the room, grabs a piece of chalk and writes a single word on the blackboard, Magic, And then he underlines it. He turns then to the class and says "What is Magic."

He stands there silently waiting for a response, his hands clasped behind his back.

"Sure sure! Friend it is! Besides, friends are better then servants or familiars or such! Friends are willing to go beyond the normal limits to help the people they know, and often the power of friendship! Besides, there is the magical theory of Soul Resonance that comes with friend....well, I can explain that later! Oh oh! I should show you around a bit! And also, Eddy should be fine. He looks cute! And he should be safe, I don't think any of the birds here would eat a Ferret".

After that, Ollie who had been on his tippy toes grabbed Cal's hand and began to show him around. It appeared that there were several other rooms setup, aside from his very casual and cozy looking bedroom and magic room. First off, he showed Cal to the main kitchen he had set up. It was actually formerly the club room of someone else, but he had it moved back up. Along the way, he pulled Cal through the core room of the tower, which had a staircase that while did not quite spiral in a round fashion, did border around the square walls and allowed someone to get up and down from the very top roof to the lowest part of the Roost. In addition, it appeared there was a dumbwaiter system in place that would help with moving cargo.

He also showed Cal to the shower and bath that was set up. Perhaps as one might expect, the bath was a giant bird bath, but the shower was also simple. It was in the center of one of the platforms that made up the core room as well, and one would pull a rope to allow the water to start falling onto them through a filter to make it a shower, although a somewhat thick one. It was more like...bathing in a waterfall.

"Ah yes, you don't really have to worry about privacy here, since other then the birds we are the only ones here. And you dont need to mind them, while they are quite the gossips only I can understand what they say so its fine".

Incidentally, Cal might have noticed this but Ollie seemed to have perfect sight, even though one of his eyes were covered by heavy bandages. Furthermore, it appeared he had no intention to put on shoes of any kind. But what might be more remarkable was his mind. Ollie had discussed advanced knowledge and theories off the top of his head like it was nothing, designed a lot of the stuff Cal saw from scratch, and could manage all of this solo. One had to wonder just how he managed all that knowledge so cleanly.

But also, Ollie mentioned being able to communicate with Birds even though he used no magic to do so, which might just be the most incredible thing he said.

"Indeedio! I am really good at making it on time since I can just fly over buildings and people with ease! I hear its going to be a good one today!"

As Ollie watched the others who came in, he waved to Cal in a rather energetic and friendly way as he invited Cal to sit next to him. As he did that, he noticed the other person, who he did not really know or remember the name of, but thought maybe it was something cool and on the tip of his tongue...but, he put that matter aside for now.

And then, it appeared to be that the class was in session. It was rather an archaic system, if Ollie said so himself, but then again he was used to better and more advanced layouts. Still, he didn't complain, show contempt or dissatisfaction. He just noted it appeared Archaic.

And then, the teacher wrote the word "Magic" on the wall and asked what it was. And that caused Ollie to stir into full throttle.

"Magic! The exact definition changes depending on which version, or which lore, goes by, as there are various different types of magic systems out there in the world. But to put it simply, magic is the ability to create, manipulate, and alter natural and supernatural forces to your will, and enforce your will upon reality. It is the use of mana, although some use prauna or Soul Energy to do theirs. Actually, according to Jassir's Study of Souls, the 'Power of Friendship' that people have referred to often that seems to be capable of changing odds and turning over fate might just be an enhancement of mana and power in response to their emotions linking up and the Souls Resonating, which causes their abilities to spike beyond normal limits".

Ollie said all of this, but then finally took a breath as he drank some water.

"Anyways, magic can be specified into various types, and so it could have a meaning different for people. People could use magic for art, to save lives, to take lives. It can even be used simply to play. So to bring this all back to what you asked before, isn't magic determined by the eye of the beholder?"

Leave it to Ollie to give such an answer. Even if he was insane, he certainly wasn't an idiot as his answer had clearly been thoughtful, based on intelligence and what he had learned as well as experience, flexibility, and insight.

He certainly showed his ability to think already, even if he normally seemed too insane to be thought of as someone who could give academic answers like this.

Andolen chuckled at ollies Exuberence. "Very well thought, but no... I'm afraid you are incorrect.
What you are describing are techniques and methods of USING magic, but not the essence of magic itself." He responds, turning and beginning to pace the front of the classroom. "The answer to the question is both needlessly complicated and overly simple."

He pauses, turning to the class and says "Magic. Is. Madness."

Andolen smiled at their reactions and shakes his head. "Magic is Madness. It is madness in that it is impossible to fathom, incomprehensible to believe. Magic is the impossible becoming real, through the will of those who use it." He turns and raises a single hand, in which a flame flickers and flares to life. "Whether you are conjuring flame that burns no fuel" he then raises the other hand and a magical sigil begins shifting and turning above it "or preparing a formula to focus and direct the energies of existence, You are essentially making what would otherwise be impossible, possible."

He lowers his hands, yet the magic continues to function in the postion he left it. "In a time long since forgotten, magic was used through the sheerest of willpower, requiring nothing more than strong determination and a keen mind to use. Those who dedicated themselves to their studies were able to focus their will to make such powers manifest. Nowadays, the focus of such abilities is lacking in most any race you find."

"It is for this reason that, regardless of whether you have the 'talent' for magic or not, you are not yet incapable of using magic. That is a falsehood perpetrated by those who do not understand the nature of magic itself. Always remember, Your ability to use the powers you will learn here are reliant on nothing more than your determination and will to learn."

"Most individuals most spend long years studying both theory and practice of magic itself, as well as reaching deep within themselves to find the key that unlocks their power. There are some beings who use magic instinctively, And most of these we note follow a way of thinking that the so called civilized populations of the universe would call either primitive or insane." Andolen chuckles and from a drawer on his desk a small carved wooden totem floats to the fore of the class. "These primitive species use objects such as this to draw upon, focus, and channel the raw forces of existence in our world. In truth their powers are no difference than our own, only the method in which they are brought forward. These symbols, effigies, and totems all function not because they have power, but because their wielders believe them to have power."

"Once again, Magic is madness, in that it is the belief of something impossible being real."

Cal listened intently to the lecture on what magic was.

"So what you're saying, then, is that anyone can learn any kind of magic as long as they believe and have the willpower to do so? The only reason certain people specialize in certain types or aspects of magic is because they believe that's all they can learn?" Cal asked.

"Also by your logic it would seem that magic is not inherently good or evil, but rather the person who uses the magic determines the alignment of the power, or in some cases the way others perceive they way one uses magic is what determines the alignment?" Halitrax gave another question.

Andolen nodded in response to both questions. "you are both correct. Magic in and of itself is but a tool, and just as one may use a scalpel to kill as to heal, one may use magic both to create, and to destroy."

Andolen then raised a palm and opened a portal, from which fell a pile of bones. Where they came from was unclear, but they were bleached white and painstakingly clean.

"As an example, Necromancy, long considered a terrible and evil magic, is yet itself not so. The methods for reanimating a corpse are various, and while I whole heartedly agree that forcibly binding and imprisoning the spirit of the deceased into a rotting cage, forcing them into slavery, is a terrible sin, it is not necessary for the raising of a corpse."

As he speaks, Andolen gestures over the bones, which then begin to shift and animate, forming back together to stand tall in the class, as they must have in life. He supplies a small sphere of magic, which he then projects into the skull of the construct, lighting the eyes of it from within.

"If one sees the animation of a corpse the same as you do the animation of a golem or similiar artificial construct, the process and acts are themselves the same, with only a difference in the medium of the construct."

He gestures, and the skeleton proceeds to the chalk board, grabbing an eraser and going about clearing the board.

"Other forms of magic, such as the summoning of demons and the like, is not evil in and of itself. Rather the fault lies with the user who summons creatures of evil without the proper knowledge or foresight to restrain them. Never forget that knowledge is in truth, power, and without it you are but a leaf blown upon far greater and more terrible winds."
