With no sound at all, Carter Fleetham suddenly appeared in the bar. He was an Extractor and so this was normal -- but it was still alarming.

To his credit, Dom didn't even look up.

"Ain't seen her," the bartender grunted even before Carter got up to the counter.

"How did you even know what I was going to -- "

"Come on, kid. Why else would you be here? Your Director lady's run off."

"Did she have a particular direction in mind?"

"Does she ever?"

Carter gave a noncommittal grunt, an odd sounding noise that didn't really have any connection to anything. Dom, who was well-versed in grunts as they were his main method of conversation, seemed to catch on fairly quick.

"What are you, her guard or something? Trying to keep tabs on her? Don't even try it. That woman thirsts for fieldwork like you need air to breathe."

"It's not that .. " the Extractor fell in at the bar, "I've got news for her. Bad news."

The bartender hardly blinked. "What is it?"

Carter gave a laugh, spitting out only one word: "Dusk."

Carter Fleetham hardly looked up when Sonya made her rather explosive entrance. Three years working with Liesha in Chicago had basically hardened him for just about anything. He finished his Coke, slid the bottle back off the counter a bit and sort of gave a sigh.

Looks like nothing was gonna change ..

"Agent Ballifrey?"

Carter lifted two fingers to get the woman's attention. "I'm Agent Fleetham, your liasion transfer from the SCD?"

Dom stumped around the corner in time to hear Sonya's order. It was too early to be drinking, in his mind, but then again it was just about too early for everything. He mumbled something about 'gimme a few minutes' and kicked a few cupboards open.

"I'd offer to come back later, but I already cleared out my desk in Chicago. That aside, someone has to take me to the WCPD station. Protocol and all."

He didn't seem fazed at all by Sonya's less than friendly demeanor. Whether this was something inherent in his mind, or if Liesha had really numbed him that much, no one could tell.

"If you're on a case right now, doing something I can help out."

"You guys do rough work, from what I hear -- good work, though," Carter said, stroking his chin. "Normally, department-to-department respect wouldn't let me ask what the mission was, but if I'm gonna be an officer with your team, I figured I might as well get up to speed. What happened?"

"Maybe you need an Extractor," Carter said, with the barest hint of a grin.

"I Extract things."

That was helpful.

"Teleportation of myself, and an Immediate. Very useful to get yourself or someone else out of a bad scrape. The rest of it's in the file -- the file, that's at the station I'm sure."

Carter followed dutifully without much comment; dark blue eyes taking in everything around him.

"OmniCorp has really grown in the last few years, huh?" he said, in way of making conversation. "There sure as heck wasn't a mall around here when I grew up, either."

There would be time for two Wing City natives (one recently returned) to catch up later. Right now, Carter just let himself get swept up into the chaos of the WCPD office. He liked it, immediately. It felt like home.

Taking the initiative, the young man reached out and knocked on the Commander's door three times in quick succession.

"Here goes nothing, right?" he said, with a smile.

"Get me one while you're at it."

SCD liasion Carter Fleetham looked up from his desk. For the last half hour he had been following a paper trail (be it an electronic paper trail) by clicking documents and reading through reports. It was dull, dull work and Carter hadn't done it since he was a junior agent back in Chicago. He had a rare rush of empathy for Liesha and how acerbic she felt without her morning cup of joe.

"Cream," the Negator said, returning to his work. "No sugar."

Carter upstarted at once, ripping his coat from the back of his chair and heading for the door at Sonya's heels.

"Who was it?" the officer asked at once as he shrugged his arms through the sleeves. "You got a lead?"

Obviously she got a lead, they wouldn't be charging through the building at top speed if she hadn't. Carter took a few deep, even breaths even as his strides lengthened. This was what he had been waiting for.

While Sonya took her three-pace bounds, Carter trotted along at his own steady clip. The bright afternoon sun almost took him by surprise -- the white stone of Wing City Plaza was as striking as it was blinding.

He didn't ask her to wait, even as she fired up her cycle and was gone. Carter was only a few seconds behind. The bike had a key in its ignition. The Extractor put his thumb and forefinger on the key guard, and felt it warm to his touch. How the system worked Carter didn't have time to find out. He felt the engine roar to life, gripped the handles and shot off after the woman.

He hadn't ridden a motorcycle in years -- decades, even. Carter weaved in and out of traffic that threatened to gridlock, his only guide Sonya's flashing sheet of platinum hair.

Wherever they were going, the normal part of him hoped there would be more backup.

Carter arrived not seconds later -- he knew his way through his old town, even if it had been twenty years since his last visit. The Extractors' dismount was effective, but he fumbled for a half-moment with the kickstand. Cursing the Wing City-made bikes, he left the thing leaning precariously.

To be honest, Carter had never been into the university. He had been by it, of course, and knew friends from his youth to have attended there -- but he had never been inside. Carter put himself about a stone's throw away from Sonya, and to the rear letting her take the lead while still covering her blind spot.

"Tell me what I'm looking for," the man raised his voice.

Sonya pushed her way forward; Carter hung back only for a second. He was an Extractor, a protector at heart. He made sure that the last few panicked students made it out onto the front lawn safely before doubling back around.

Although there was a pistol at Carter's side, he did not take it up. His hands remained calm and easy at his sides, as though he were ready to catch something should it fall. This was a stance not many folks would be used to seeing in such a high-octane situation -- but there it was, at any rate.

Dirty blonde. Man in a suit. Carter breathed in, breathed out. Stay calm.

No. What am I talking about? I have been here before. It was fifth grade; they had a lecture here on insects that Mrs. Weatherby thought would be interesting. This wing. I remember this wing. Being an Extractor meant keeping cool. Carter took the south corridor while Sonya wandered down the east.

"Clear."

It's bigger. A lot bigger than I remember. Carter poked his head into a classroom -- backpacks, textbooks were abandoned everywhere.

"Clear."

Clear. Just like my head. Let's do this.

"Got it," Carter said, coming back around. This time he lead them up the stairs, ducking to the left once they reached the second floor landing, hugging the side of a massive pillar. "Can we expect any backup? Do you want him detained, brought somewhere? Seems like something we should have established on the way, if there were time."

There wasn't time, and Carter was well aware of this. He kept his voice low and his arms to the side, yet.

"I assume he won't come quietly, but I can still see what I can do."

There were two schools of thought when it came to Extraction -- one that detailed the concept of detainment, and one that detailed protection; avoidance. Before he and Sonya split up, he gave only this question:

"Do you want me to save our victim, or detain our perp?"

Carter was torn. On one hand, he had been told to scan the second floor to make sure there would be no one else trying to catch them by surprise -- on the other hand, if he was to save any victim then he had best be the one breaching the third floor.

The Extractor in him won out. Carter took the steps to the third floor two at a time, hurrying only slightly. Calm. He had to clear his head. This was a constant struggle, and it separated the good Extractors from the bad. I can do this.

He flanked Sonya on the other side of the hall, judging from her expression that their perp was there.

"Do you see him?" Carter breathed, and he did not mean Dannyl.

Carter sprang, body lengthening as he raced forward. His speed wasn't superhuman, but it was clear that Carter was in good shape for a man of his age. He took a hopskip forward and 'cheated' his distance like all good Extractors do; the man found a visual anchor for his destination (namely, the inside of a classroom by only a sliver) and without so much as a pop, he was there.

The Extractor turned on his heel once he made his landing, rushing to the door to lean against it. He was now two rooms up and a bit to the left of where Sonya was -- Dannyl might not have even seen anything. From here, the barricaded classroom was just across the hall.
