At twelve years old, Castala Reid found her older brother dead in their home, having been murdered by a raging thief who had got overly excited when Nicholas confronted him when the thief broke into the man's home.

Nicky? Nicky, I'm home from school! I got my test results...

Unfortunately, there was no miracle revival for Cas, no sudden breath taken when she leant over her brother's cooling body and begged for him to blink.

Nick! Nick, what's wrong? I don't know what to do!

By the time that Cas had ran to the neighbours' house and retrieved them, it was far, far too late. Nick had been dead for hours.

Nick... was my brother and my best friend. He will always be in my heart, and... and...

The funeral was a small affair, warm and comfortable for the pre-teen who had lost her entire family within minutes of returning home from school.

... And he will always be alive for me.

So begins...

Castala wasn't wearing black, nor did she carry a bunch of cheap flowers, or any other form of grave-appropriate thing. In fact, she had her iPod attached to her through the headphones, loud music blaring into the fourteen year old's ears.

She was playing an appropriate song - Nick's favourite.

"Heya, Nicky," she murmured, settling down onto her knees beside the gravestone that held her brother's name, date of birth and date of departure. "It's Cas. Um. School's fine. I found your Mathematics notes in the cupboard in your room, and it really helped with my homework, so... thanks."

The girl sighed, scrubbing a hand over her eyes.

"I miss you, Nick."

Cas Reid continued talking to what she assumed was an empty graveyard for a few moments longer.

"There's this boy at school who says he likes me - y'know, like-likes... Like, he fancies me or something, but he's a big bully and I don't really like him. You'd be able to sort him out, Nicky, he's a wuss in front of the teachers, but he picks on the... on the..."

She had lifted her head as if to contemplate the sky only to catch sight of the Boatman.

"Are you an angel?"

Cas Reid considered the hand and the name. "Baravaté. Many things, but you're an angel... for me?" she asked, taking his hand with thin fingers. "Do you know who I am, or do you just randomly appear in this graveyard?"

Cas wasn't religious, but she did believe in angels. Nick had always told these little stories at bedtime about angels, how they faced trials and always fixed their problems and retained their love for the human race. These creatures were special, God-like to the kid.

"Do you know Nick?" Surely Nick had gone to wear the angels lived.

Cas Reid felt the smile crack her face before she had consciously realised what the Boatman had said. "You know Nick." Relief, primarily; joy, secondary. He had lived on for her. "You've come for me? You're killing me?"

That worried her, but not as much as it probably should've. She had friends and a foster family, but... Nick was still in her heart, and it was painful. Grief didn't disappear, but you learned to ignore the swelling pain that occurred with every breath and heartbeat.

Cas Reid tilted her head, fingers tensing and stilling in Baravaté's hands. She had never, ever experienced that kind of treatment, had only seen it in movies and musicals. "Offer me salvation," she repeated with a look that inspired confusion and misunderstanding, "but you're not going to kill me, or let me take my own life - I don't think I could do it anyways..."

The child - for that was what she was, despite how she had tried to be the mature young woman everyone expected her to be - looked lost.

"What is happening?"

Cas Reid certainly had not expected that, eyes widened slightly and body completely unmoving for the duration of the strange hug from what she believed an angel.

"Protect me from what?"

'Life,' the pessimistic voice in her head stated coldly.

"A gift?"

Surely not something material. Nick? She couldn't ask for that, it wouldn't be fair. Nick might be happy in the Angels' Paradise.

"Oh."

Cas Reid almost relaxed completely. It would have been difficult to do so in the presence of a complete stranger no matter how spectacular or faith-inducing he was.

"Okay." Close could mean days, weeks, months, years... "Are you cruel, Baravaté?" It wouldn't have surprised her. He wasn't cold, but there wasn't any real warmth, either. The politeness and the hugging suggested it, or rather that Cas had inferred it, but it wasn't solid evidence. "You're not a demon playing with me?" The constant worrying that Nick had induced - demons would toy with you and then kill you.

Castala was still young and naive enough to take the Boatman's words - anyone older or less trusting may have asked for proof, demanded some kind of guarantee of his words, but not the barely teenage girl wrapped in Baravaté's embrace.

"That's good," she replied quietly. "What happens until I am ready for the gift?" So many question, such odd answers...

Cas Reid almost frowned. Care. Love. Protection. "You're going to be my friend," she said, words nearly prompting some form of assurance, but the tone in which these words were said suggested that Cas had already decided that this was true.

"I already have friends, but I don't have any friends who are angels."

Finally, Cas relaxed. Even now, the girl was still plagued with sleepless nights in which she wished and begged and pleaded with whatever imaginary force she could think of to give her the chance to have an angel take care of her. Nick had always said that the angels would never abandon her, and although the were two years late, Castala was undeniably grateful. "Thank you, Baravaté," she murmured, cautiously returning this odd hug.

"I think I need to go home now. It'll take a little while to get there if I have to bypass the bar... the men there aren't very nice, usually," Cas explained as she hesitantly pulled back from Baravaté, relief and peace in her expression.

"Baravaté? I really mean it. Thank you. I really need a friend right now who... who knows death." No one else she knew had lost anyone yet. "Goodbye." With that said, the remaining member of the Reid family turned to begin her trek home, past the rowdy bar - she had full faith in what Baravaté said.

Angels do not lie.

At seventeen years old, Cas probably wasn't quite ready to be in a place like this yet, but that certainly wasn't going to put her off. She had her angel, of course, and that gave her confidence to do things that she knew might be dangerous.

Castala wasn't sure if that kind of trust was wise, but she knew it was real. Even stepping into Gambit's Bar had her heart clutching at air, but there didn't seem to be anything to worry about. Not yet, anyway.

As soon as Baravaté appeared in her line of sight - had he been there all along, or had he just arrived? The few years that Cas had known the Boatman had taught her that she could never, and probably would never be able to, tell.

"Hello, Baravaté..." she greeted quietly, nodding towards the Boatman.

Cas Reid returned the smile with a grin of her own, turning from the direction she had been heading in so that she could make her way to Baravaté. "Your hair looks rather more curly than usual, you know," the teenager pointed out, manner joking. "Nick always said angels had curly hair; do you not like to use hair straighteners?" Not that she was complaining; Castala thought the curls were handsome, and she was almost jealous of the natural springs of hair when hers was so straight and limp. "How are you, Baravaté?"

Cas Reid nodded her head. "You are as you always are. You always say that," the teen laughed. "Why are you here, Baravaté? You don't usually turn up for no reason, and I don't think I called you. Did I?" Maybe her nervous approach to this place had been what prompted Baravaté's appearance, but Cas never knew with this angel.

"Oh... I guess I was a little nervous; one of the girls in the other higher form class said that her mum's boyfriend's son's best friend's cousin had got murdered here," Cas explained with a nod. "But I was going to go shopping and I didn't think it could be that bad if the place is still open..."

Cas Reid nodded, smiling still even after the assurance that this bar was dangerous. "But you're here, so it's okay, right?" If Baravaté were here, nothing bad could happen - those were the rules. He protected her from everything. "What's so bad about it? Here, I mean, why's it so awful?"

"So there are lots of different things going around and they might be dangerous?" Castala asked, used to the Boatman's sudden movements. She turned to look at him, tilting her head before glancing at Ichor 'The Mad'. "That kind of dangerous?" she whispered.

"Hm... Maybe I'll go talk to this person if I'm allowed to explore" she mused aloud, turning to make her way over to Ichor, curiosity written in her expression.
