Cassie Harris

Media darling and pretty face aside, Cassie's persuasive nature is more than just a way with words. There's more to the pretty blonde woman than meets the eye.

Description

ImageName: Cassie Harris
Age: 22

Personality: Bubbly and cheerful, Cassie is almost always light-hearted and in good humour. She has a biting wit that she tends to employ largely in jest, and tends to have to say "I'm just kidding!" a lot. Protective and kind, despite her relative lack of combat-relative abilities Cassie does her best to help her friends and teammates out in a scuffle.

"My articles sell because I talk about the issues people care about. I don't just let things lie to appease politicians or armies. If someone in the public eye is doing something immoral, I am going to crucify them, and consequences be damned."

Cassie has had a pretty easy life, on the scale of things. Her parents were upper-middle class, and she had a leg up on the system from the start. Living in the well-to-do city of Solinus, she went to a private school and achieved straight As in her studies. Her interests have always lain primarily in investigating and exposing corruption, lies and crime in powerful figures. She's worked as a private investigator, but her primary source of income has been as a journalist - both freelance and full-time, practising investigative journalism and writing sensationalised articles to stir up activism and interest in the issues she finds important. Though she is still something of a privileged young woman, she's spent enough time away from home and involving herself in things she shouldn't be to have acquired a more down to earth side, more than willing to get her hands dirty.

Abilities:

Silver-tongue charm - Cassie has spent some time mastering a subtle form of magic, one often associated with succubi, or other demonic entities. When she speaks, other people have a natural tendency towards agreeing with her without thinking, and they will find her arguments more persuasive than they otherwise would have. This can't be exclusively relied on, as if there are obvious holes in her story, anyone who takes a few minutes to go over it in their heads enough times will break the spell through simple logic, but if the story seems superficially watertight, people are a lot less inclined to question it.

So begins...

"Sorry! Darren. Don't tease Darren." Cassie corrected herself.

Nathan shrugged, "Hey, all I did was wink. People wink at each other all the time. It's all down to how people interpret it." Hint hint. "But fair does. So anyway, Darren - apart from play music, what else do you do? Like, are you an avid reader? Gamer? Cycler? Or what?"

Cassie coughed. The blush was really rather obvious now, and she doubted it was an angry one. "Tic-Tac-Toe is noughts and crosses, right?" she asked, frowning, "Guh, blonde moment."

"Yes, Cassie, it is." Nathan laughed, "I bet you've impressed girlfriends in the past with that." Nudge nudge. "The cooking, I mean, not the tic-tac-toe, as admirable a sport as it might be."

Cassie smirked, "Yeah. For once, a man that I could tell to go make me a god damn sammich." she said, laughing.

"I'm just not romantic." Cassie shrugged, "I find it a stretch to find flowers and chocolate charming, let alone songs! I prefer actually spending time with people and just meshing, you get me?"

Nathan laughed, "You're just sort of hostile when it comes to relationships, Cass. One hint of someone trying to flirt with you and you shoot them down. 's why you're still single."

"Psh! Says the one who won't consider dating because he 'works too much to be a worthwhile partner', in his own words. We're both as crap at romance as each other, Nate."

"If you say so."

"Hey, I never said that you - or anyone I shoot down - were a loser. And most people don't go to quite as much effort as you, I felt guilty. And you weren't as up yourself as most, either. They're normally all slick, dressed up overconfident... well, you get the idea." Cassie shrugged, "And who on earth would I be setting you up with?"

The glance at Nathan didn't go unnoticed, but neither of the two felt that they knew Darren well enough to casually tease him about it. Nathan did, however, feel that it was an odd enough glance to at least comment on. "Er, do I have something on my face, or what?"

There was an equally long pause then, as Nathan blinked slowly. "Right ... what?" That was an odd choice for an excuse for staring. "Is there something wrong with my nose, that I should be concerned with, or were you just making an observation?"

Cassie just raised an eyebrow and wonder what on earth Darren had been smoking.

"I didn't accuse you of anything. Don't put words in my mouth, especially when they're coming from your own head." Nathan folded his arms and raised a slightly unamused eyebrow.

Cassie coughed. "Right! Anywayys..."

Awkward moment, much?

Nathan sighed, "Look, sorry, Cass - I have work to do. This has been fun, but I need to go." he said, shaking his head. "Make sure that Darren doesn't get snow all over the floor when you two do leave ..."

The man rose and started to make toward the door. Cassie scowled, and stood up to go after him. "I'll be right back, Darren." she said, smiling apologetically.

Catching Nathan a short distance from the door, Cassie took his arm and held him back. "Listen, Nathan, that was harsh. Sure, he's being annoying, but not everyone has had as successful a life as you. You're comfortable with who you are, and so are your friends and family. Darren's not got a support network like that, and it's harsh of you to expect him to be able to be so smooth about everything."

Nathan sighed and looked back at Darren in the booth, "I suppose you're right. Tell him I said sorry. But I really should go."

"Don't, Nathan. This is your first evening off in forever, don't go home in a bad mood..."

Frowning, Nathan ran a hand through his hair, "I'm pretty sure that he won't want me around after that one. He's better off talking to someone who isn't going to intimidate him."

Cassie let out an exasperated sigh, "And I'm better for that? I've already emotionally crippled him once, and as far as I can tell he's as alarmed by good looking girls as by good looking guys."

"Exactly!" Nathan shook his head, "He needs to talk to his family, or closer friends, not a pair of practical strangers. He needs to pull himself together so he can take a joke from someone who's actually comfortable with who they are without freaking out. Tell him I'm sorry for the barb, but I'm out. I'll see you tomorrow."

"Nathan-" Cassie began, but the man had already walked out the door. She stood there for a few moments, before scowling. "Well, fuck." she cursed, retreating back to the booth and sitting down with an aggravated growl. That last five minutes could've gone better...

"I'm sorry, Darren." Cassie said, sighing, "I didn't realise ... well, whatever's going on, I didn't realise it. I'll be fine. You should get back to Wing City before it's too late. It's dangerous there at night."

The blonde girl sighed, and took a pen from her bag, scribbling something on an old receipt. "Here, my number. Call if you want to meet up with me or the gang again - but don't take that for something it's not. Sorry again."

Cassie smiled faintly and patted Darren on the arm, "Just a little, hon. Anyone that uncomfortable around someone like Nathan is either homophobic, or well, you know. And you don't strike me as the kind of ass who is the former."

The blonde shook her head, "You've not been idiot. It's like I told Nathan, you've got a lot to get used to. He was lucky, he had Matt, his parents and a bunch of other friends when he made his choice, and everyone was as cool with it as ever anyone is. And that's where you should look, unless you have any reason not to. Closer friends and family are people you really need on your side."

Cassie laughed, "But I feel a little awkward giving intimate advice on a second-ever-meeting, so there you go. Nathan wanted me to tell you that he's sorry, also."

Amongst the applauding crowd was indeed sat a familiar face -- two, in fact. Cassie had persuaded Nathan that he needed to come along to apologise for the other day, and seeing as Matt, Carissa, Yasmine and Jenny were away in Norway for some reason, he didn't have much to do until they got back with news on the case they were following.

There was a third face at their table though, that while standing out, Darren wouldn't recognise - red-haired and soft-featured (though that wasn't why she stood out), Alice Taylor had joined Nathan and Cassie for the evening. What did stand out about her was the fact that as far as could be seen, every inch of her was covered with tattoos - all visible skin, her face, neck, and hands were patterned with odd symbols and swirling shapes.

As Darren left the stage, Cassie waved a hand to him to attract his attention. "Hey again!" she said as he approached, "That was great! You're really good, you know."

Alice nodded curtly, "Your music, while unusual for your gender, is well tailored to suit you. For someone who is not a professional, you are quite capable." And that was how compliments from Alice went - they weren't exactly compliments, just statements of fact. If they happened to be positive, well, all the better for the receiver!

Nathan smiled faintly in agreement. "Impressive." was all he said as Cassie gestured for Darren to sit.

"How's your week been?" she asked, before pausing - "Oh! This is Alice, by the way - Alice, Darren. She's another of the CSI team."

Alice nodded, "Yes, I am indeed a crime scene investigator, by profession." she asserted redundantly -- she wasn't exactly a good liar, but thankfully she was odd enough that it was hard to tell when she was being odd because she was lying, rather than just generally being odd.

"Well, I've spent most of the week covering a particularly violent house-fire in London." Cassie gave an almost undetectable accusing sidelong glance at Nathan, "The first conclusion was arson, which made it a story, but it turns out someone just left a candle or a lamp on, and things went from there."

Of course, that had been a planted oil lamp, but the police didn't know that. And what they didn't know, wouldn't eat them.

Alice tilted her head at Cassie at her explanation, nodding. "Myself and the other team members have been following a case. There is not a lot we can inform you of, as you can understand, but the others are away on matters relating to it at present." she said.

"I'd be with them if I wasn't still on imposed leave." Nathan noted, obviously annoyed at having been kept back. In truth, it was because of his wounded arm, but he couldn't exactly tell Darren that after saying the injury was from weeks ago. "I suppose I've used the rest well enough though." By going through paperwork, mostly.

"How about you?" Cassie inquired.

"Good idea." Cassie said, snickering. As Darren wandered off, the three returned to their conversation. "Has Carissa's sister made any progress apart from finding out where it came from?"

Nathan shook his head, "I'm hoping the others can find a lead in Norway. It's hard to acquire a creature like that without recruiting help, and I'd guess that some locals probably ended up either involved or catching onto what was happening - the inducted ones, anyway."

"There is the possibility that we are dealing with a powerful mage of some sort. If that is the case, then there may be no leads." Alice pointed out.

"That's where Carissa will come in handy. If there's any magic still hanging around there, she'll be able to see it."

Alice nodded. "That is true. It is a shame that you cannot remember what type of cassette player it was, that you found. That would have also helped."

"We're working on acquiring that from the fire investigation lot at the moment."

Cassie grinned, "Do you ever talk about anything but work?" she asked, rolling her eyes. "I swear, I start you off, and you'd keep going for hours if I let you."

"You'd be right there." Cassie smiled, "But we were just moving on."

"To what?" Alice asked, "As far as I was aware we had yet to move on from deciding that we were no longer going to talk about work. There was no decided alternate conversation topic."

"Oh, oh, I know!" Nathan folded his arms, "How about we talk about Cassie's new friend. You know, the camera guy."

"Oh, shut up, Nathan. He slipped, was all, his camera tilted and he missed my face."

"Seems awful convenient. I think the world enjoyed the show, though."

"Screw you!"

"People usually have dinner first."

"All of you can stop being idiots any time you feel like it, you know. Don't feel obliged to." Cassie folded her arms and gave Darren a wry look.

Nathan snorted, "You could say that. Let's just say, the line 'My eyes are up here' came into play. The anchorwoman was still laughing when it went back to the studio."

"I'm not sure that follows with any sort of psychological science..." Alice began, but Nathan cut her off by waving a hand.

"I think we all know that we're just being a little silly." he said, smiling. "No need to get technical today, as much as you might enjoy it!"

Cassie rolled her eyes. "I swear, one of these days Nathan, I will find a way to plaster your face across every newspaper with some sort of career-destroying headline."

Nathan raised an eyebrow, "But your job is to make me look good!"

"Only in your mind, buddy, only in your mind!"

"I'd love one." Cassie said, rolling her eyes, "Anything to keep your mouths occupied instead of spouting garbage!" The reporter glanced at her watch, "Ah, what the hell - I'll have a glass of white wine."

Nathan smirked, "Just coke for me thanks. Designated driver and all, once blondie here gets off her face."

"I do not get off of my face drunk! Ever!"

"What about that one time with the champagne and the funnel and that one --"

"Stop there. Those are bad, hazy memories from being a stupid teenager."

Alice seemed slightly perplexed by the banter, but she smiled politely to Darren. "I will have water, thank you, as I am also driving."

"You're ganging up on me to make me seem like an alcoholic now, I swear..>"

"I drink when I'm not driving." Nathan grinned.

"He's not lying, he's normally as drunk as Matt, and that's an achievement." Cassie was about to continue, but at that point her phone rang in her bag. "Oop, gotta get that. I'll be back in a tick." she said, hopping out of her seat and slipping out of the noisy bar to answer.

Alice raised an eyebrow at Nathan. "A drunkard, when not on task, hm? I should attend more of your get-togethers, it seems, to keep you and Matthew under control."

"Good luck with that." Nathan snorted, "Last time I tried to keep Matt off the pisser at a party, I ended up covered in punch ... that took a long time to wash out."

Nathan smiled, "Matt's quite rash when he's not on the job, and when he was younger he was only worse." he explained, "He's worse when he's on the drink."

"Cassie is taking a call." Alice noted, "I assume something related to her work. Despite her earlier protestations, I might add."

Nathan shrugged, "Either that or it's the cameraman calling her back..."

"I dunno, maybe a tightass like me might loosen up a bit." Nathan laughed, "And I can totally see that. When have you got drunk? You don't seem the type to party to me, but maybe I'm jumping to conclusions."

"I fail to see how one's appearance suggests anything about their drinking habits. You are an excellent example - your appearance is of a respectable, well groomed individual, and yet if Cassie's stories are to be believed, it is entirely an act." Alice raised her eyebrow, and shrugged her shoulders.

"Ha!" Nathan shook his head, "I was young, then. And yes! It was very good. Not my style of music at all, but you owned that stage, completely. Much respect."
