Description

Charlotte came to Wing City with her husband. They were three years married. She loved him. He always said he loved her. But Charlotte was never a particularly pretty woman. She wasn't alluring enough.

Oh, but all the other women in Wing City were. And probably always would be. They would always outshine plain, normal little Charlotte.

Because Curtsive is beautiful and wonderful and I love him and his drawings are the best things ever!

The most destitute, pitiful mop slugged into the bar.

A woman, perhaps in her early thirties (or maybe her sodden appearance simply gave her age) had come in. She had a bird's nest of stringy brown hair, her skin was dark tan, darker for splotches of soot that smeared here and there, on her cheek, on her neck, her arm, her hands.

She was not particularly attractive. No, not at all. She was not dainty, or delicate, or thin. She had a slightly heavy jaw, and her brow already began to wrinkle, not for her age, but for grief. She had covered up considerably for the rain, which dampened the shoulders of her parka.

With hardly a glance at the other patrons, she sat down at the counter, brown eyes low to the ground. She plugged in a quick order; something heavy. Something that would burn.

And meanwhile, she played with the plain gold ring on her finger.

The bar doors opened, and running in came little Charlotte.

She had her coat pulled tightly towards her, with the furry hood low over her head. She pulled it down after walking further inside, huffing as she tried to catch her breath. She had run the entire way there.

Charlotte was a rather plain woman. She was not nearly as pretty as any of the women who came into Gambit's, nor was she as ugly as others that would dare show their face there. With a head of curly, frizzy brown hair, and a pair of large, hazel eyes, anyone would suspect there had to be more.

There wasn't. And that was the oddity.

Sitting down at the counter, Charlotte rolled off her gloves, revealing a golden ring upon one. She threw a grin and a short laugh at Cain.

"Kinda wet out there, huh?"

Charlotte's grin became wider. "Whoever controls the weather? Good one." she said. "I mean, I know some pretty...interesting things tend to happen here, but that one thing's nothing but a natural occurrence, right?"

Denial.

She pulled up her sleeve and checked her watch, squinting at the numbers. "It's about...ten? Ten thirteen. Pretty early, if you ask me." she said, picking up a menu to look at it, herself.

"Not too early for a drink, however. Oh, hey, I'm Charlotte. Who're you?" she asked the man, holding out her hand.

Well, she seemed friendly enough.

Charlotte's fingers wiggled a bit in the air as he ignored her hand.

"Ah...is there something wrong?" she asked, not willing to let it go so easily. "I don't bite, you know. Even though I know a lot of people here do." She put out another little laugh. Everything was so funny in Wing City! Wasn't it?

"No problem. Also...you're quite the comedian. Though I admit, it certainly does seem that way."

She turned her head briefly as a...rather...young boy came in, causing Charlotte to frown. "How old is he, do you think? That's a little surprising."

"Oh-" said Charlotte, closing her fingers before retreating her hand to her lap. "I...that's fine, I guess. Yeah, that's okay." She nodded. Odd. But okay.

She glanced back once more at the young kid. What in the world? Why was he here? Lost or something? She shook her head. She had too many problems of her own.

"Brings me here? Ah...well...I don't have much else to do, really. Sad, huh?" She laughed nervously, eyes pointed down to her lap, where she played with the plain gold ring on her finger.

"Nope. Can't really sleep, either."

"It...tends to do that." said Charlotte, watching Michael. What an interesting character he was. A bit, ah...a bit frightening. Instantly, Charlotte thought, oh, he must have done some time in jail, and he had a gang. And quite frankly, that was frightening! But it wasn't as if the man she was with right now was a bit shady.

"Does that make you nervous? Are you not, ah...good around crowds?" she said, putting her clasped hands between her knees.

"Well, that's good, especially since people seem to just...keep coming in." said Charlotte. "That's not the...well, that's okay, too. Some very intriguing people like to come in, huh? More than on the streets."

She watched as Michael's eyes briefly went over her, and scratched her neck from nerves. Goosebumps ran over her skin.

She noticed another young woman who came in. Oh, good. Great. Awesome. Someone else who looked fairly normal.

Charlotte nearly hit the ceiling for how much she jumped, the crash of the beer bottle catching her off guard. Oh, but when was Charlotte ever on guard?

"Um-okay." she mumbled, watching Cain move away. Upstairs. Well, that was short-lived. But it would have been nice to have another conver-

"Oh. Hi, ah. Hello! I'm Charlotte," the woman said, introducing herself to Keiko. "Nice to meet you."

"Oh, you too, huh?" she said, chuckling. "Me? I came here with my husband about three weeks ago. I've been slowly adjusting. You're right about strange things here. But...I guess I'm getting used to that, too. There's quite a bit I have to learn. What about you? Are you well versed in this city's...ah...charm?"

Charm.

Haha. Yeah. No.

"A...firearm? Well...I'm sure that's a good plan, but...I couldn't." she said, shaking her head.

"Oh, Virginia. Pretty calm place, if you ask me. Especially compared to...Wing City. I'm not quite sure how we wound up here. My husband was ecstatic, though, after coming here on a business trip. He just couldn't wait to move! It was slightly overwhelming."

"Fell in love? With this place? Ha, well, I guess...that happens." Her husband certainly "fell in love" With Wing City. Or it's women, rather.

"I noticed it was a-" Her attention was taken by Michael. "S-sorry? They? What happened?"

Charlotte snorted in laughter, hand cupping her mouth. She noticed, however, she was likely the only one laughing, and stopped immediately in embarrassment.

"So who are the Aschen and the Taiyou? My husband did not mention them at all. Are they big...ah...deal? Well, no, forget that. Of course they were. But why? What kind of occupation...?"

She glanced Keiko's card.

...a cop?

Charlotte was...conflicted, to say the least. She looked at Keiko with a bite of her lip. "Well, they do sound...charming. You must be a part of the Taiyou, then, to speak so...very...highly of them." she told her.

"I should watch out for these Aschen, I take it. I haven't really seen anything too frightening here yet, but I haven't been here long enough, I take it."

She was a smart one? Hah! She was a smart one.

"The...Galaxy...the whole Galaxy? No, wait, that has to be impossible!" she said, narrowing her eyes. "You're pulling my leg, now. Hah-hah. Very funny. What are the Taiyou really, now? And that destruction was because of a terrorist attack, right? That's what Jerry told me."

"Right. When I manage to hook up the computer." said Charlotte, nodding. Something...about this woman...made her slightly uncomfortable. Keiko was much more intelligent than herself, she could tell. And she likely knew how to use the gun she spoke about. After all, she was a cop. And she was part of a faction that took up a galaxy.

"I think...I'm going to retire for the night. Let this all sink in. Nice meeting you, Keiko." she said, holding out her hand to shake.

Into the bar came Charlotte again.

It had just begun to rain again, and the woman had wrapped her arms around her shoulders, an expression of mild annoyance crossing her features. She was not a particularly attractive woman, though she wasn't particularly hideous, either. No, Charlotte was plain. Commonplace. Boring. She was slightly plump, had a head of frizzy brown hair, and dull, hazel eyes.

That was Charlotte. Nothing special. But surely that meant there was something more? Everyone in Wing City was something more.

As Charlotte came to the counter, she peeled off her gloves, revealing a plain gold ring on her finger. She sighed and shook her head, seating herself before throwing a glance at the other man within Gambit's.

"Nasty night."

Right as Charlotte rose her fingers to the touch-screen menu, she froze, turning her head to stare right into the man's eyes. That stare. Something made her uneasy, but something else told her she didn't care. Well, too much...

"Swapping...secrets?" she mumbled, still frozen with her hand on the screen. "I...ah...well, that sounds...dandy! It sounds dandy. How about you first?"

Charlotte's eyes widened considerably, but she managed a laugh. An uneasy one. Another psycho killer in the making. Or was he one already? What did Jerry say? Everyone she met likely killed at least one person in the past? She shouldn't go out of the house?

Like she could help it when he wasn't there to keep her company.

"I...ran over a chicken once." And cried.

What an applaud she deserved.

It had been something that Charlotte did not want to accept either. Every cell in her body quivered, causing the woman to shudder as she turned around. She knew she did not want to. She knew that it could not have been good. She must have swallowed stoned, because the feeling in her gut was so heavy...

...and as she turned around, she almost sighed. It was a woman. Not some monster with numerous tentacles, twenty eyes, a gaping mouth filled with twenty thousand teeth and slimy skin.

...did all monsters have extra ligaments? Hmm. Best not to want to find out.

"Ah-" she stuttered, head turning back to Evan. "Ah...right. The...the chicken." She reached over to tap in a drink absentmindedly, thumb rubbing the ring.

"Well...no. It's not really a story. That was it. I hit it. It exploded in feathers- poof! Just like that!- and it died. And I was terrified. But you want to know something more interesting? No, if we're telling dirty secrets, I've got something better. Because really, killing chickens by accident doesn't make for good conversation."

This time, it was Charlotte who exploded. Like that chicken. When the drink came, she took it up and began to drink immediately.

"I'm home. Alone. Every day for the past three weeks. My husband's off gallivanting with every woman he passes. He thinks I don't know. Or maybe he does. But I can't feel the need to give a shit anymore. Isn't that a lot more interesting? Hm?"

Charlotte awoke from an early slumber upon hearing the noise outside. Groggily, she wiped her eyes, then slid out of bed in her small nightgown. She brushed her fingers through her thick, unruly brown hair and peered out of the window.

The apartment had been so empty lately. Without Brett there. Working late again, she supposed. Or...sleeping in someone else's bed, was more like it. She pushed it out of her mind to concentrate on the ruckus outside.

"...what in the world." came her surprised whisper, watching the gas mask wearing figures walk down the street, banging on garbage cans. She grasped her window and pulled it up, poking her head out to get a slightly closer look from the two-story window.

"What's going on?"
