The Oblivion Doomsday, Molecular Disruption Device, or MDD is described as a missile device used to create an atomic state in which electrons cannot be shared and ionic bonds are broken. When this happens, the molecule splits into separate atoms, which create a chain reaction in inducing a similar splitting state in surrounding mass within five kilometers and any sizable collection of matter.
The more massive the target or closer a group of matter is to other groups, the greater the firepower of the weapon. Hence, the weapon was generally fired on clusters of starships and drones during the Zolarian’s war with the Solari. To thwart shield based defensive technology the doomsday device has recently been upgraded to fire a continuous high energy phaser beam in a transmitted hydro-magnetic sheath before the impact of the missiles so that it can make contact with matter. This phaser could effectively bore through planetary sized defense systems and simulations show that the whole weapon system could destroy a planet’s ecosphere with one shot in less than three seconds while leaving the planetoid the size of Terra roughly intact short of a breach of a planet’s mantel if said planet had a liquid interior. Smaller planetoids are reduced to powder.
Small moons less than 1,737.5 kilometers in diameter could be destroyed with the use of just the phaser and hydro-magnetic sheath. Oblivion is the slowest doomsday to charge but is one of the most effective super weapons against large groups of tightly packed targets or targets with an extremely large mass or surface area.
The crystallographic lattice of metals and alloys fall apart when faced with such a weapon. All matter has some covalent bonds. The release of free electrons affected by Oblivion coupled with a frequency manipulation and underlying pull on phase space caused when the weapon activates spurs the reaction on until no more matter is in range. The weapon destroys friend and foe alike.
History shows the use of this weapon against biomechanical vessels and/or bioships and life forms is all the more devastating due to the prevalence of covalent bonds in biomass. Such a combat test was given first when the weapon was used to defend the system of Dodixie from the Kraed. Though the system was lost and nearly every man, woman, and child died, the weapon did serve well.
What is left after the weapon is fired is a hot soup of elements that cannot be salvaged for its complex parts. It is one of three doomsday devices that can affect the solid form state of Valorium.
