Darius Arteria

I'm a soul man.

a character in “The Multiverse”, as played by Thundergod1020

Description

Darius Arteria, the Ferryman's Bouncer
"The weak end your life... The skilled make it hell."
Age: 2045 and seven months, looks 26
Species: Human/Inari
Height: 6 feet, 3 inches
Weight: 190 pounds
Things to differentiate Darius from the average Joe:
-Nine translucent flaming tails, which are intangible due to their being made of false-foxfire(everyone can see it, regardless of mental strength, due to it being light refraction rather than mental magic). This is in no way offensively usable, and is simply a racial trait, where each tail represents a certain level of power, maxing out at nine. The flames do not produce their own light unless Darius wishes, and it is a weak glow.
-prismatic eyes, also useless in combat.
-short silver hair, kind of useful if the opponent is distracted by it
-large dog-like ears, useful for when Darius needs to fight blind

Equipment:
Darius needs little to wear defensively, due to both his style being more effective the less he's weighed down, and because he only needs enough to stay modest. He wears a simple gi that is a dingy brown in color, and a black undershirt beneath it. He wears sandals, but only when walking barefoot would be socially unacceptable, such as in a restaurant.

Passive abilities
-Form Anchoring: whenever Darius touches someone with his magic, they become anchored in this dimension/plane of existence, incapable of interacting with other dimensions in any way until the magic is dispersed(Ex., if someone is struck by his main weapon, Light-With-No-Shade, they'll be yanked into this dimension and can't use things like astral projection until he stops using it, but a quick-acting spell like his Shadow Burst will only stop them for a brief moment, pulling them into this dimension, but not holding them here.) The Anchoring also prevents beings from leaving their natural state until the debuff ends. This means someone who normally fuses with another would be left unfusable, shapeshifters can't, and someone who took the form of a liquid/gas will be yanked back to the form they held previous.

-Enhanced speed, reflexes, and agility: Thanks to his monstrous heritage, Darius can both move and react to things at speeds that surpass that of high-caliber bullets, and does not suffer detrimental results of such speed like whiplash or inertia from running into small objects in the air. He has enough leg strength to ascend buildings by leaping up between them, and speed enough to appear to flicker between two points in space to the average human.

-Enhanced durability: Being half-monster doesn't just improve speed, but also grants him incredible toughness, capable of taking cannonfire to the gut and persistent enough to fight for hours at full throttle without lactic acid buildup. Sharp enough blades still hurt him severely, of course.

-Magic Resonance: Darius is able to sense magic and other forms of supernatural energy(I consider anything that cannot be done with technology such as electricity, wires, mirrors, etc. "magic". If it comes from Chi, it's magic. If it's alchemic(ala FMA), it's magic. If Satan himself is powering it, it's magic.) before they're released(and while they're active), which he could best describe as feeling the path the energy is going to take while the caster is still formulating the idea of using it. Darius can also ignore barriers made with said energies by tuning his own energies to perfectly match, thus allowing him to slip through as if he were part of the barrier itself.

-Martial Arts prowess: Darius has two millennia of training and usage of several different forms of the martial arts. Through this, he has devised his own style centered around quick strikes at weak spots on the opponent. This cripples/wears the opponent down until he can hit an incapacitating, nonlethal(most of the time) blow. All his experience has left him a master of prediction, using the motion of his opponent's body to tell where they'll strike and act accordingly with almost prescient ability. This applies to weapon-based combat as well, with the same concept of seeing the body movements that will result in the weapon moving and stopping them before they follow through. When combined with his capacity to see magic before it's cast, it is near-impossible to catch him off-guard.

-Age and experience: Darius is really freakin' old. He's traveled the entire world and has experienced almost everything this world has to offer, along with the next world. He cannot be taken off-guard by something new, and has knowledge in almost all trades, be they combat-based or not. His experiences also mean he has a solution for almost every situation, which is one of the reasons he's continued to live this long.

-Charon's Employee: Due to his boss being the guy who the spirits got past in the first place, Darius has a certain leeway with things when it comes to Death. For one, he cannot die-die, Charon'll just bring him back to life nearby and away from danger. He also is immune to diseases, poisons, and light and dark-based magic/chi/whathaveyou, however, he cannot abuse his undeath to continue a fight, if he's killed, he must accept his loss and leave.

Active combat abilities
-Light-With-No-Shade: Darius' main offense, these are twin tonfa made of light which can trigger the Anchoring effect. Each one extends to his elbow and four inches past his fist, with a blunted, curved blade that juts out four inches opposite the handle. They are weightless for all practical purposes, cannot be broken, and disappear the second they leave Darius' hands, but can be recalled instantly, however, this still resets the Dimensional Anchor effect.

-Shadow Burst: Darius stomps the ground/makes a spreading motion in the air and releases a wave of spiritual energy into the physical realm in the form of a spherical shockwave, pushing away anything else that has a spirit with extreme prejudice(things classified as not having a spirit are unpossessed inanimate objects, magic-controlled deceased beings(although any living beings inside them will be affected), and pure technology, although the same rule as the undead have applies here with living beings inside). This is by no means a spammable spell, taking at least three seconds to charge(though he can move during this time, attacking or being hit with a disruptive move resets his need to charge) but hits anything within a ten-foot radius regardless of whether or not they're tangible, or even if they're just a spirit, and also yanks them into existence as a tangible being for a brief moment. Against beings with more than one soul, the kinetic force behind the burst is increased with a ratio of 1:1, meaning two souls doubles the force, three triples, etc., etc.

-Light Burst: Darius focuses spiritual energy in the point of his tonfa and fires off a basketball-sized concussive beam of energy with a punch, with the equivalent effect of being hit by a dump truck in terms of momentum and force as the punishment for being hit, as it dissipates and delivers its kinetic energy into the target. It can be redirected, but not reflected, and cannot be redirected by more than 45 degrees. This is spammable, but is capable of being charged for more speed and power(and no real cap) while Darius is moving, and Night-With-No-Dawn turns this spell into a piercing attack, replacing the concussive ball of energy with a spinning drill.

-Night-With-No-Dawn: Darius' last resort weapon, he turns his tonfa into elbow blades of darkness, which act like a saw through dimensions, ripping apart anything they pass through regardless of durability or capacity to repel. The only reason he doesn't always use this spell all the time is because it only lasts for ten seconds and leaves him totally depowered for the rest of the day. During these ten seconds, Darius cannot use the Shadow Burst, and gains increasing speed and strength over the duration, peaking at double his speed and strength at the eight second mark. This sounds negligible in comparison to those whose power can increase by larger amounts, but considering his already incredible speed, and lack of a need for strength(can't block what cuts through everything, and even if he didn't, he's still all about poking the opponent wherever they'll suffer for it most, so strength only sweetens the deal), this is more than he needs. The only thing in existence that can stop the Night-With-No-Dawn is the Light-With-No-Shade, which only Darius and other employees of Charon know.

-Balance Break: Darius' finishing move against those who have proven too dangerous to allow back into this world or the next, he infuses his spirit energy into his very fists and punches the opponent with 108 strikes at full force in the span of a half-second, enough to pierce through an entire planet. The energy in his fists is then released through their body, acting to disassemble his opponent on both a molecular and spiritual level into inert particles and reishi. The entire disassembling process takes three seconds, starting with the external limbs within the first second. Then the senses leave, allowing only pain to be felt. The heart is last, and leaves behind no trace of the original being's existence. This move requires the opponent to be immobilized, which Darius' style tends to inflict rather quickly if allowed, and can be performed at full power even as a depowered human, although this causes muscle backlash.

-Balance Burst: Darius steps between dimensions for a brief moment, causing himself to be both untargetable and incapable of doing damage. When he leaves the split, he causes a displacement of energy, pulling things in and then exploding back out with a wave of spiritual energy. This can only be done once per battle, so Darius tends to make it count. If something would be in the same place as Darius where he would reappear, it is shoved away violently.

So begins...

Darius woke up to the pleasant feeling of weightlessness and wind surrounding him. There was a slight problem with that. He'd been sleeping on Charon's boat in the River Styx, and since Darius had handled his last job without a hitch, the boat had been moored. He turned to face the wind, and groaned. Yup, that was the ground coming up. He turned in the air to get his beari-

Amazing how just the right angle can snap a neck so easily, regardless of how many gods one has slayed.

Back in the afterlife, Charon was busy laughing his bony ass off as Darius popped back into his boat, his neck twisted at an angle that was almost painful to look at.

"You know," Darius said as he snapped his neck back into place, "There was a marvelous invention made a while back. I think you might have heard of it, something called AN ALARM CLOCK." Charon's laugh was as dry as the wasteland surrounding the River Styx.

I have no idea what you are talking about, fox. What I DO know is you need a vacation, so I'm giving you two weeks off. Darius stumbled as he tried to speak in response to this information, which, to be fair, is a lot to take in for someone who was just woken up by having their neck broken.

"Two weeks? Have the maggots finally discovered your brain and eaten it?" Charon's grin got even wider, if one can widen a grin whilst having no skin to cover all of the grin in the first place.

Alright, you drive a hard bargain, one week, but that's as low as I can go, and I've got other people handing me money hand over fist for bargains this bare-boned!

The pun made Darius slowly facepalm in depression. Out of all the quirks Charon had, the two that bothered Darius the most were his incessant need to talk in boltalic font and not use quotation marks(He said it made him seem Deathy.), and the lame jokes Charon would come up with whilst ferrying souls over to the great beyond. The fact he sounded like a Jewish grandpa as he told them didn't help.

"Just send me off now, I could care less where." Darius said, having given up all hope of ever enjoying a decent joke again.

Alright, but be warned, you basically said ANYWHERE. Charon responded, and as soon as he was finished speaking, Darius was in the middle of what looked like an intense mating ritual. VERY intense he corrected himself as one exploded into glass at the onslaught of the other.

"Umm..." He said to the male after the woman left, his words coming out fluently in whatever language the people involved were best with(Omnilinguistic capacity, a necessity for those who work with the recently deceased of the universe), "Hi. Is there, perhaps, a stiff drink around here I could get?"

Ezrael stared at the punching bag that hung near the wall as the arrival of another became apparent. His eyelashes fluttered flat for a moment before he slid his eyes towards the man. "No," he said, "None so close to me. But out there..." A lone hand raised and gestured for the door. "...And down the road, is Gambit's Bar." It occurred to him that he must have been wearing a very sour face.

He exhaled a sigh to let it go, then clutched his left hand into a balled fist. "Forgive my demeanor. I'm just being rude." He offered a half-bow and straightened. "But I intend to stay here and train so I will not be guiding you to the bar."

Darius nodded his thanks, walking to the door. Then, stopping and turning, he threw a straight punch in the air laced with ki, the resulting shockwave causing the bag to fall off of its hook from the force.

"Remember, aim behind your target, rotation is your main source of power, and keep good posture. The Big Three in any Hard martial art. With soft martial arts, be the one in control, never let your opponent land a hit, and rotation is your main source of power. Remember those ideals, and you'll find your skills drastically improve. Also, a man who trains under anger will learn half as much in twice the time. Take five minutes to self-reflect and think on your skills, then start again once your stress has been relieved." Darius turned around to walk out once more, and waved behind his back, "I'll be at the bar, I need to be knackered by noon, or some other euphemism for getting drunk fast, I have a week to stay that way!"

As he turned down the road, he smelled the air, his nose picking up every scent out there. The sweat from the dojo, the flowers that succeeded in blooming and the rot of those that failed. As he walked with his eyes closed, a sense of his piqued that hadn't been piqued in a while, and he opened his eyes to see what did so. The girl in front of him, she was the one, it was a new magic, something he hadn't smelled in years. Without caring, he walked around her, smelling and looking her over.

"Combat magic, I would guess, perhaps based on inflammation of the nerves for direct pain? Ma'am dare I ask how you do that? Or rather , attempt to demonstrate if you can? Pardon my rudeness, but two centuries without seeing any new magic gets really dull." Darius knew what he asked was silly, but he could never resist the call of seeing a new magic, especially with his magic sense. To others , magic could be rather dull, but to him, each one was a firework, beautiful and colorful.

Aneres Coreveon wasn't dressed as obscurely as she would have liked to believe. The shimmering white kimono-style overlayer embroidered with golden moons down the sleeves, the long-hemmed fringe coming to rest just above the hemline of golden bell-bottoms. Beneath was a plain white top. A golden chain poked out from the collar but the rest of it was tucked beneath the shirt.

There was nothing Aneres could do about the bodyguards who followed her, but she had grown used to that to some degree. At least they let her style them at this point. It made everyone's job easier.

Aneres flicked golden braids to look one way up the street, then the other, then back again. A grunt from one of the bodyguards signaled that it was alright to cross. Halfway across the street she felt a slight tremor of energy. The bodyguards picked up their pace and hurried Aneres across. She didn't protest. They came to stop a stone's throw from a mercedes, a man perched atop the back.

"Did you feel that?" Aneres asked the man, half looking down her nose despite the fact that he was literally seated higher up than where she stood. Her tone wasn't pretentious but there was something about it that dripped with royalty.

"Bristol, very nice to meet you," Aneres extended her own hand and delicately gripped his. She frowned upon hearing that he didn't know what it was either.

"I am Aneres, as I prefer to be called," She regally addressed Bristol with a smile, "Princess of Aurealas. A pleasure to meet you. Is that what brings you here? Looking for the source of the disturbance? I will admit I haven't felt it anywhere else but here."

One of her Over's coughed. She rolled her eyes. They were always concerned she would reveal too much. Aneres had yet to do so.

As Peter continues down the street in his heavy armor, he glances around. He's searching for someone, even if it takes him forever to find them. All he knows is that they're somewhere in this city. In his momentary thought, his eyes pass over a few people, one of them being the very person he was looking for. They should recognize him easily enough, though, so maybe this mistake won't cost him anything. He turns on his radio, rapidly tuning through frequencies until he finds one, a simple music station. He listens as he advances further down the street.

In a little cafe, just the other side of the border...

Leviathan roared in fury as it burst from the shadows, an incredible thing considering its size. Looming over the historic district of Main Street, LEVIATHAN had once again emerged.

WHO... DISTURBS... MY... SLUMBER?
it rumbled, drawing upon ancient sands of nostalgia. The windows of Gambit's Bar rattled, surely drawing the attention of any inside.

Leviathan waited for the winds to return a reply, but heard nothing — all but the hum of spacecraft, coming from the bizarre area to the north. Having been asleep for over a decade in his own time, this was a new sound in a city that felt unfamiliar, despite this very creature being there at the beginning.

In a huff, Leviathan stomped off, stepping over one building before crushing another in his slither towards the sound.
