Description

Darren Samson Image

  • Darren Samson was born on the thirtieth of November, 1989 to Darren Samson Senior and Samantha Samson nee Rob. As queer as his little family may be, they are quite a close knit group and tend to exaggerate their affection in public as if to prove that their family cell is the closest and most interesting one out there.
  • Darren himself is a perky young man who often enjoys a spot of busking outside the local shopping centre or even Gambit's Bar (although he's been warned many a time not to risk it; some people just couldn't appreciate a bit of Brit). He has few close friends and many acquaintances from school and artist events he takes part in now and again, but feels that he is at that period in life where he requires more than the plucking of a guitar string to sate his dreams -- perhaps the plucking of some heartstrings is in order?
  • By no means unattractive, Darren has had his fair share of medium-term relationships, one night flings and 'the one' has been found several times already. According to one of his peers, the problem isn't that he's a commitmentphobe or a terrible boyfriend, but that he perhaps hasn't embraced his entire sexuality quite yet and just needs to broaden his horizons a bit if he wants to find the right person to settle down with (and, let's face it, he isn't going to find that person whilst busking on the streets or singing in run down pubs, is he? This isn't a romantic comedy).
  • Darren has a few quirks, the most obvious being that he's a complete Britney Spears fan. If he isn't singing Britney, he's singing someone who did a cover of Britney, and if he isn't singing that, he's probably eating or sleeping. This young man is intelligent, although not in the educated sense. He couldn't tell you how to factor a polynomial or write down the equation of a sine wave, but he's charismatic and quick on the uptake of practical skills. At school, home economics and technological studies were his forte.
  • As well as these few oddities, Darren also carries numerous legal pads with him, upon which he notes ideas, thoughts and feelings about particular sights, sounds or smells. He isn't quite sure why. Darren enjoys games of Noughts and Crosses, especially when they're impromptu - like on a foggy bus window or on some unsuspecting citizen's back - and tends to be fascinated by pans, the justification for which is that 'they're just so damn useful'. Finally, Darren abhors staring competitions. Not only does he think they're a waste of time, but he's had a lifelong fear of his eyes drying out midway through a competition and becoming blind. It is believed that stemmed from nightmares of a creepy kid at school who used to stare a lot, wherein the child would remove Darren's eyes with a Bagpuss spoon.
  • Finally, Darren has decided that his ultimate goal in life is to meet Britney Spears and be her backing vocals. Failing that, Darren has decided that he would quite happily settle for marrying a Brit-look-a-like, someone who loves Britney as much as he does, or someone who can stand him singing her songs and not become jealous about it.

So begins...

The door opened, and with the movement came the soft sound of a guitar played staccato. "I think I'm ready now..." The male voice soon drifted off into silence, upon which the owner of the voice strolled into the bar, an acoustic guitar on a strap and resting against his back, the neck of the instrument angled down his right leg. "That was fun," he chirped, walking with a swagger and sway of the hips that men really shouldn't possess (I bet he learned that from his mother). "I hope they serve non-alcoholic drinks..." the young man hummed as he strayed towards the bar counter.

Darren Samson sat a couple of stools up from the woman who'd graced him with a look and happily ordered himself a glass of iced cola. "Alright," he greeted her with a nod, a charming grin appearing as he undid one of ends of his strap from the guitar and placed it against the counter. "Indulging in a bit of coffee? I can smell it from here..."

The young man's eyebrows almost traversed into the territory of his hairline at that. "You drink rum in the morning?" Well, that made Darren feel two things. First of all, he felt pretty damn embarrassed, because he could barely stomach a Blue Wkd during a night out, let alone rum every morning... and secondly he felt a little wary. If you had to drink alcohol first thing in the morning... well. Didn't say much positive things about you, did it?

"Oh... ha ha, right. Sure," he agreed with an awkward nod. "Uh... I'm Darren. I was the irritating sod standing outside and singing with my guitar..."

Darren Samson gave a half-smile and shook his head. "My bad. I heard 'start my day off' and thought 'morning'... Eh. Thanks, I think. Nice to meet you, Anira. What brings you here, other than the 'inviting atmosphere' and great music?"

With a curious blink, Darren realised that his drink had been delivered in his distraction -- and he quite happily paused in the conversation to wet his throat. "Boredom gets me a lot," he agreed, voice subtly rougher (sticky cola did that to him), although nonetheless kind. "So..."

Awkward.

"Not to the city, no, I was born here. This particular bar is a bit out of my way, but I'd heard tell that a lot of people came here, and I'm a bit of a busker... You probably gathered that from the whole singing outside the bar entrance thing, though." A quirky little smile rested on his lips between speaking and drinking, and the singer seemed quite relaxed in the room.

The kid looked a little uncomfortable as she inched closer, and so shrugged in typical response of men everywhere gave a non-committal grunt. "Here... like, in the city or in this bar? The city's alright, I mean, and so is the bar, but I've not really found anything exciting - yet."

"You should like it here," he assured her. "Especially if you happen to be walking the streets I'm busking -- not that you walk the streets! I mean like, if you happen to be walking near where I'm playing, I in no way meant to insinuate that you are a prostitute!"

"Er, me? How old am I?" Well. Random question. "I'm, uh, twenty-three years old, ma'am," Darren nodded. "Er... you?"

"Oh... Oh, okay." That seemed feasible. "Yeah, yeah, I play guitar -- played the guitar for years. I think I started when I was a kid..." He trailed off as Areeya sat herself beside them and he managed an awkward grin in return. "I'm Darren. Same to you, really."

"Wherever, really. There's a pub a few streets over from my parents' house. The owner knows my parents, so he lets me play there at the weekends and on open mic nights. It's a quick way to bring in some money, so I'm always grateful for it..." Having two girls talking to him totally wasn't making him nervous.

Not at all. No, seriously, he was blushing because it was warm. Totally. Calm.

Darren Samson blinked. Quite a few times. He also took several sips from his glass of cola, but eventually he chanced answering the pair. "Well... yeah, I'm good at playing the guitar and I've got a bit of a voice on me. I wouldn't say I was spectacular or anything, but I can sufficiently hold a tune..." He punctuated the statement with a cough, attempting to distract the two women from his blushing.

Darren Samson jolted and promptly scowled at Skunk. "Don't even think about it," he half-snarled, half-ordered, his own fingers curling around the neck of the instrument and pulling it close to his body. "Jeez!"

Darren Samson heaved a sigh and, after toting his guitar onto his lap and wrapping his arms around the body. "Uh..." The young man looked back at both of the women and then turned to peer at Sonya. "Uh..." Yeah, words were failing him right now. After Skunk made his comments, the dark-haired bloke turned a look on him. "It's not a... 'bar guitar'... It's my guitar. Has been for a few years now." His name was even written on the underside of the soundboard.

Darren Samson cleared his throat once again and absently pulled the guitar strap over his head and secured it at a comfortable length. His left hand was leant lazily on the neck whilst his right forearm rested easily on top of the air cavity, hand hanging in front of the strings. "So... Anira. Areeya. You're friends, then? I guess?"

"Oh. Oh, right, well, that's good then. Nice to know you've got a mate, I suppose," he nodded as he absently glanced at Skunk, completely and utterly confused, and Sonya, who he couldn't see a problem with at all...

"She's actually kinda pretty," he thought aloud.

"No, I mean 'mate' like 'friend'... Y'know. A mate. Friend. Pal."

"Uh..." Darren idly strummed an absent major chord before lifting a finger to rub at his temple. "Y'know, you two are friends, so much you two should talk and I'll go and... sing somewhere. Outside. Maybe. Or talk to someone else?"

Awkward, once again.

Darren Samson grimaced. Well, that solved one problem. Now he wasn't overly embarrassed about having two women winking at him or making him feel awkward. "Uh... Sure, see you later, I guess. I'm busking tomorrow too!" he called after her, even as he was standing to meander --

Well, he was going to go and have a chat with the pretty lady, but apparently she was being 'flirted with' already.

"Uh... Okay, maybe I'll go home. Or... yeah."

That was totally his cue. With a very certain movement towards Sonya, Darren plastered a grin on his face and started to strum lightly on the strings of his favourite guitar.

As he came within a foot, he started to sing. Although his voice was nothing particularly spectacular, it was certainly well tuned and suited to the guitar well.

"Oh, baby, baby... How was I supposed to know that something wasn't right here..?"

Hell to the yes, this was a man in a comfortable t-shirt and a pair of ratty jeans singing Britney Spears.

"Oh, baby, baby, I shouldn't have let you go... but now you're out of sight - yeah! Show me how you want it to be... Tell me, baby, 'cause I need to know now, oh because my loneliness is killing me and I must confess I still believe. When I'm not with you I lose my mind, so gimme a sign and hit me, baby, one more time..."

With a descending broken chord, he paused and went on to a short guitar fill, during which he most definitely smiled a most charming smile at Sonya as he rocked back and forth alone with the beat as he played.

Darren Samson 's song ended with an abrupt discord. Okay. Well. He can't have been that good, then.

"Oh, well, okay then..."

Darren Samson decided that now was a good time to be leaving. Yep. Out walked the serenading twenty-three year old with his guitar in tow.

Very quickly.

Darren Samson , somewhere else in Wing City, was still pining over his failed serenade attempt with Sonya.

Darren Samson strutted into the bar looking like a guy who had just casually rolled out of bed, showered, spent forty minutes in the bathroom making sure his hair was just perfectly mussed and had then spent the next twenty minutes brushing his teeth.

Yep. It was a good day for Darren. He felt like he was on top of the world, and finally all of that gay-confusion was behind him! Why? Because there was a smoking hot girl - he had seen her before, somewhere; her name was Cally or Cassie or something - talking to some nerdy-looking teenager, and he was so in there.

Why? Because he had a guitar and a voice like something really cool and suave.

"Oh, baby, can't you see? I'm callin' -- a girl like you should wear a warning! It's dangerous... I'm fallin'."

That's right. Darren Samson, twenty-three-year-old Wing City busker and native, was singing Britney Spears to a woman and playing his guitar.
