Darren Samson

Twenty-three is an awkward age. Puberty is long gone, and really you should have a job, but not this young man. He still busks and hopes to 'make it big'...

Description

Darren Samson Image

  • Darren Samson was born on the thirtieth of November, 1989 to Darren Samson Senior and Samantha Samson nee Rob. As queer as his little family may be, they are quite a close knit group and tend to exaggerate their affection in public as if to prove that their family cell is the closest and most interesting one out there.
  • Darren himself is a perky young man who often enjoys a spot of busking outside the local shopping centre or even Gambit's Bar (although he's been warned many a time not to risk it; some people just couldn't appreciate a bit of Brit). He has few close friends and many acquaintances from school and artist events he takes part in now and again, but feels that he is at that period in life where he requires more than the plucking of a guitar string to sate his dreams -- perhaps the plucking of some heartstrings is in order?
  • By no means unattractive, Darren has had his fair share of medium-term relationships, one night flings and 'the one' has been found several times already. According to one of his peers, the problem isn't that he's a commitmentphobe or a terrible boyfriend, but that he perhaps hasn't embraced his entire sexuality quite yet and just needs to broaden his horizons a bit if he wants to find the right person to settle down with (and, let's face it, he isn't going to find that person whilst busking on the streets or singing in run down pubs, is he? This isn't a romantic comedy).
  • Darren has a few quirks, the most obvious being that he's a complete Britney Spears fan. If he isn't singing Britney, he's singing someone who did a cover of Britney, and if he isn't singing that, he's probably eating or sleeping. This young man is intelligent, although not in the educated sense. He couldn't tell you how to factor a polynomial or write down the equation of a sine wave, but he's charismatic and quick on the uptake of practical skills. At school, home economics and technological studies were his forte.
  • As well as these few oddities, Darren also carries numerous legal pads with him, upon which he notes ideas, thoughts and feelings about particular sights, sounds or smells. He isn't quite sure why. Darren enjoys games of Noughts and Crosses, especially when they're impromptu - like on a foggy bus window or on some unsuspecting citizen's back - and tends to be fascinated by pans, the justification for which is that 'they're just so damn useful'. Finally, Darren abhors staring competitions. Not only does he think they're a waste of time, but he's had a lifelong fear of his eyes drying out midway through a competition and becoming blind. It is believed that stemmed from nightmares of a creepy kid at school who used to stare a lot, wherein the child would remove Darren's eyes with a Bagpuss spoon.
  • Finally, Darren has decided that his ultimate goal in life is to meet Britney Spears and be her backing vocals. Failing that, Darren has decided that he would quite happily settle for marrying a Brit-look-a-like, someone who loves Britney as much as he does, or someone who can stand him singing her songs and not become jealous about it.

So begins...

Hell to the yes, this was a man in a comfortable t-shirt and a pair of ratty jeans singing Britney Spears.

"Oh, baby, baby, I shouldn't have let you go... but now you're out of sight - yeah! Show me how you want it to be... Tell me, baby, 'cause I need to know now, oh because my loneliness is killing me and I must confess I still believe. When I'm not with you I lose my mind, so gimme a sign and hit me, baby, one more time..."

With a descending broken chord, he paused and went on to a short guitar fill, during which he most definitely smiled a most charming smile at Sonya as he rocked back and forth alone with the beat as he played.

Darren Samson 's song ended with an abrupt discord. Okay. Well. He can't have been that good, then.

"Oh, well, okay then..."

Darren Samson decided that now was a good time to be leaving. Yep. Out walked the serenading twenty-three year old with his guitar in tow.

Very quickly.

Darren Samson , somewhere else in Wing City, was still pining over his failed serenade attempt with Sonya.

Darren Samson strutted into the bar looking like a guy who had just casually rolled out of bed, showered, spent forty minutes in the bathroom making sure his hair was just perfectly mussed and had then spent the next twenty minutes brushing his teeth.

Yep. It was a good day for Darren. He felt like he was on top of the world, and finally all of that gay-confusion was behind him! Why? Because there was a smoking hot girl - he had seen her before, somewhere; her name was Cally or Cassie or something - talking to some nerdy-looking teenager, and he was so in there.

Why? Because he had a guitar and a voice like something really cool and suave.

"Oh, baby, can't you see? I'm callin' -- a girl like you should wear a warning! It's dangerous... I'm fallin'."

That's right. Darren Samson, twenty-three-year-old Wing City busker and native, was singing Britney Spears to a woman and playing his guitar.

The discord that occurred when Cassie prompted him to stop was heart-breaking. So was the look on Darren's face.

"What shows?" He wasn't British! He didn't watch good TV! "Why would I want you to sign something..? I was trying to serenade you. I thought that was romantic."

Oh dear.

"... would you like me to sing something else?" the 'kid' asked hopefully. "I know Katy Perry songs! And that stupid Bruno Mars song about a grenade. And the slightly better one about loving a person for who they are..."

Darren Samson hugged his guitar to himself and pretended like he didn't look like he was about to cry. This just wasn't fair. A year ago, that little opening phrase would've had girls crawling over him! And now he was so gay that he couldn't even get a girl interested!

"I need to go to the toilet."

That announced to the whole world (and here Darren went an interesting shade of purple in embarrassment), the boy made off into the toilets for a private moment of recollection.

After spending a good ten minutes not washing his face after crying his small human-sized heart out over how life just wasn't going right any more, poor Darren made his way back out of the bathroom. He had even flushed the toilet and washed his hands to give the illusion of having been in there for a half-decent reason.

In reality, the most Darren had done was rub at his eyes when they felt prickly with tears, hence the slight redness around them, and scowl at himself in the dubby mirrors for being such a girl. Right now, all it was was a bit of confusion in his head, which was perfectly normal, after all. It would go back to normal once he got a steady girlfriend.

Now, however, he just had to walk out of the bathroom with his head held high and his guitar ready to pluck the heartstrings of some unfortunate soul.

It was rather a shame that Darren failed miserably at doing the former... At least he managed to walk out of the door without injuring himself. That was a plus, right? Right?

The young man grimaced. Oh joy. She was going to harp at him for the whole serenading business not being appropriate or how she was totally not interested in him...

So, when she held her hand out, Darren frowned, confused, and leant back, away from the woman. "Um... Yeah, I know. I saw you in one of the newspapers... New BBC reporter or something," he mumbled as he took her hand, however briefly. "I wasn't upset. I just needed to wash my hands."

Blatant lying was not Darren's forte...

"I'm Darren. I... er... Sing. To people. For people, I mean."

Darren settled for blinking and being thoroughly confused. "Eh, yeah. Busking. It's a bit of a crap job when it's cold. Or snowing. Or there are giant things invading the city, but you have to start somewhere, right?" he joked with a fairly humourless laugh -- shame and embarrassment tended to rob the situation of any amusement. "So, um. Yeah. I get it, it's all fine, I didn't mean anything by it and I know I'm a bit creepy and so on. It doesn't matter. I'll get out of your hair now."

"Wait..." Darren had to hold up a hand there. "I... creeped you out... and then ran off like an idiot... and you're inviting me out with your friends?" This sounded weird. And too good to be true. "Are you doing some form of reality show about idiots?" he asked, looking about himself with furtive glances for cameras. "Or are you really being genuinely nice? Because I would like to go out..."

Darren Samson snorted at that. He didn't know what ITV was, other than a TV channel, but the way that Cassie said it suggested that it hosted a pretty poor programme. "Oh right. Thanks. I'll... see you tomorrow."

A very small, hopeful smile crawled onto Darren's face. He figured it would've been a lot larger if not for the fact that, in the back of his head, a little voice was whispering at him.

"I bet she just wants you to be her gay friend! Girls eat that up!"

Still, if he was going to be gay, he might as well have a heap of new friends to help... This could work out.

Darren nodded. "Thanks for your help."

When it came to the ridiculous sexuality problems that Darren Samson had been experiencing, he was pretty sure that he had them down pat. He was almost certain now that he simply had issues about his Dad or something equally stupid, so he would just ignore them and hit on as many girls as possible.

Which was totally why he was walking into The Down Arms at this point in the week in order to meet the group of friends of someone he'd embarrassed himself in front of and serenaded.

The thought made the casually dressed twenty-three-year-old(it had taken all of twenty minutes for Darren to shower, shave, dress and walk out the door) flush red with shameful heat, but that certainly didn't stop him from searching around the quieter establishment (when compared to Gambit's, at least) in order to find Cassie.

With a smile, he made his way over to the booth and then awkwardly raised a hand to say hello to Cassie and the three nameless patrons beside her.

"... hi?"

Well, embarrassment didn't quite cover the extent of how standing in front of these four people made him feel. He nodded in turn as Cassie introduced the group and, once she was quite finished, he smile at the woman herself before eyeing up the other three.

"Thank you all for having me," he grinned, seating himself down at the edge of the booth with some casual awkwardness. "And... uh... no, not luck in that sense."

Yep. Embarrassment definitely wasn't a strong enough word.

"You play something?" That was interesting and a very safe topic! Jump on it! The young man looked between the four other participants in this strange little meeting and nodded in encouragement of the discussion. "I don't think anyone is really without musical talent -- it's just that... some are better than others? That wasn't a bad thing to say, was it? That wasn't rude?"

"Talent is a strong word," Darren stated with an amused tone of voice and a sly look at the three 'strangers' as he took a seat beside Cassie as opposed to perching awkwardly at the edge. "I've been fine enough -- better than... Nathan? Is it Nathan? Your arm..?"

When Nathan offered drinks, Darren shook his head. He wasn't one for alcohol and, as he was about to tell the others, he had a perfectly good explanation for not drinking anything at all quite yet.

"I just brushed my teeth."

That made him sound like a petulant nine-year-old. Great.

"Oh," Darren responded eloquently once Nathan's explanation had been given. "Right... Uh-- play? Oh! No, no, I - well, it's kind of embarrassing - I busk around the town between playing at bars and pubs and so on, but there isn't much want for live players when you know you can get good music from a cheap stereo system and entertainment from drunken karaoke..."

Following this, he fell silent in order to listen to the other three talk of Nathan.

"Wait, wait -- I thought he said he hurt himself a while ago. What happened yesterday?"

Darren Samson blinked at how quickly Cassie answered, and yet was soon distracted by Yasmine's question and Matthew's half-amusing comments.

"Uh - well, not many qualifications..." he answered, wondering why someone he had just met would be worried about that kind of thing. "And it's not much work..."

With a suitably confused look on his face, he turned to Cassie and shook his head. "None of my friends are like this," he commented with a grimace. "I'm confused already and one of your friends isn't even at the table..."

“Oh. Well, that’s good then, that at least one of you is normal – not that I mean anything offensive by that, but – I’m not used to all of this. Socialising isn’t big. Eh... If I had a guitar I’d feel a lot better, but I thought it’d be weird to turn up to a bar with a guitar, right?”

The poor, floundering twenty-three-year-old fell quiet and resolved to look politely interested. Instead, he managed to look thoroughly cowed and confused.

“Er...” Just how manynoises of discomfort was it possible for one to make, anyway?

“Jam..? Is that – oh, you mean – right. My bad. Head isn’t screwed on today,” Darren laughed, awkward and absent. “That sounds like it’d be – what?”

Yes. Mentioning the gay thing when one of the party was currently hiding so far in the closet that he was almost burrowing out the back of the damn thing was not quite a smart move at all.

“I’m not gay,” he stated, all too fast and too defensive to sound completely true. “I mean, there’s nothing wrong with it or anything, but I’m… not. I even serenaded Cassie. That proves I’m not gay, right?”

The rather unimpressively distraught bloke turned worried eyes on Cassie, as if waiting for her to accuse him of the opposite.

And slight awkwardness soon turned to immense discomfort. Small, metaphorical alarm bells were ringing inside Darren’s head. One was telling him that he was an idiot for making himself look like a homophobic freak in front of the good-looking girls, another was telling him that he was an idiot for making the good-looking guy think he was some form of homophobic freak and yet another was screaming with such worry that he had been found out, that he was that obvious.

An uncomfortable grimace settled on his face, and Darren resolved to say absolutely nothing for a while in order to see if that cleared up the sudden heat across his face and down his neck. He wasn’t actually sure if he had ever felt like this before, but it was certainly not as scary as the thought of telling his parents about his ‘minor’ worry. Almost, though. Very close.
