Darren Samson

Twenty-three is an awkward age. Puberty is long gone, and really you should have a job, but not this young man. He still busks and hopes to 'make it big'...

Description

Darren Samson Image

  • Darren Samson was born on the thirtieth of November, 1989 to Darren Samson Senior and Samantha Samson nee Rob. As queer as his little family may be, they are quite a close knit group and tend to exaggerate their affection in public as if to prove that their family cell is the closest and most interesting one out there.
  • Darren himself is a perky young man who often enjoys a spot of busking outside the local shopping centre or even Gambit's Bar (although he's been warned many a time not to risk it; some people just couldn't appreciate a bit of Brit). He has few close friends and many acquaintances from school and artist events he takes part in now and again, but feels that he is at that period in life where he requires more than the plucking of a guitar string to sate his dreams -- perhaps the plucking of some heartstrings is in order?
  • By no means unattractive, Darren has had his fair share of medium-term relationships, one night flings and 'the one' has been found several times already. According to one of his peers, the problem isn't that he's a commitmentphobe or a terrible boyfriend, but that he perhaps hasn't embraced his entire sexuality quite yet and just needs to broaden his horizons a bit if he wants to find the right person to settle down with (and, let's face it, he isn't going to find that person whilst busking on the streets or singing in run down pubs, is he? This isn't a romantic comedy).
  • Darren has a few quirks, the most obvious being that he's a complete Britney Spears fan. If he isn't singing Britney, he's singing someone who did a cover of Britney, and if he isn't singing that, he's probably eating or sleeping. This young man is intelligent, although not in the educated sense. He couldn't tell you how to factor a polynomial or write down the equation of a sine wave, but he's charismatic and quick on the uptake of practical skills. At school, home economics and technological studies were his forte.
  • As well as these few oddities, Darren also carries numerous legal pads with him, upon which he notes ideas, thoughts and feelings about particular sights, sounds or smells. He isn't quite sure why. Darren enjoys games of Noughts and Crosses, especially when they're impromptu - like on a foggy bus window or on some unsuspecting citizen's back - and tends to be fascinated by pans, the justification for which is that 'they're just so damn useful'. Finally, Darren abhors staring competitions. Not only does he think they're a waste of time, but he's had a lifelong fear of his eyes drying out midway through a competition and becoming blind. It is believed that stemmed from nightmares of a creepy kid at school who used to stare a lot, wherein the child would remove Darren's eyes with a Bagpuss spoon.
  • Finally, Darren has decided that his ultimate goal in life is to meet Britney Spears and be her backing vocals. Failing that, Darren has decided that he would quite happily settle for marrying a Brit-look-a-like, someone who loves Britney as much as he does, or someone who can stand him singing her songs and not become jealous about it.

So begins...

With a few rather confused blinks, Darren gave a slow nod and returned the majority of his attention to Nathan with a sheepish smile. “I’m afraid to say that I couldn’t follow what was just said. I’m going to go with it that you’re too optimistic and that’s silly? I’m a glass half-full man, myself, but… I dunno, I like to think that’s a good mindset,” he said with a confident shrug.

“I’m going to admit that I was kinda hopin’ you were gonna come out with some gossip there, Alice.”

A momentary look of surprise crossed Darren’s face, but soon he was snickering into his beer. “You’re funny, Alice,” he granted, grinning at the woman in question. “That kind of information is always good to know, thanks!”

A cheeky little smile was sent in Nathan’s direction, surely rather piss-taking and joking in nature. “I guess work takes up a lot of your time, huh?”

Darren was having a hard time keeping a straight face through Alice’s commentary, and so it was no surprise that he ended up giggling into his bottle and nearly spilling down himself.

“No, come on, Nathan, what would you say is the reason behind your lack of success in the looove department?”

This was called ‘taking advantage of the chance when it presented itself’ – but really, who wouldn’t take the piss out of someone who’d hauled them out of the closet in front of people? Certainly not Darren!

Darren leant back in his seat and leveled Nathan with a look that completely and utterly ignored the glare and suggested that perhaps Darren was more amused than cowed by the expression on the other man’s face. “Ridiculous conversations are the most amusing ones – especially ones about relationships,” he grinned. “Wouldn’t you say so? Besides, it’s not like I really know either of you all that well… This is helping solve that!”

Staring at Alice, Darren tinged a very familiar shade of pink that reached both the tips of his ears and the apples of his cheeks.

“Pardon me?” he eventually said, after spending a moment or two gaping at her in surprise. “I’m sure that, even if that was the case – and I’m not saying that it is – I’m pretty sure that the fact that I’m straight might put a spanner into that little story right there!” Here, Darren sent a worried little look at Nathan before hoisting a cocky, confident look onto his face. “I hope that was a joke.”

Darren Samson nodded for a good few minutes, looking awfully confused and dreadfully embarrassed. "Well. True. I think. Besides, even if I was -- and I'm still not saying that I am -- I'm pretty sure Nathan’s workaholic attitude and high expectations wouldn’t be met by my musician’s lifestyle... right?"

That seemed like a pretty realistic thing to say.

Darren Samson shrugged his shoulders, a fleeting smile crossing his face before it was hidden behind the bottle of now room temperature beer he held. "That'd be good," he agreed. "But I don't live off rice and moisture from the air," the musician added with a snicker. "I have three square meals a day and my tap works too, so the water doesn't come from the air."

With a nod, Darren raised his beer in mock toast. "Props to you an' all, though, with the great job thing."

Darren Samson tilted his head and watched as Nathan stood to head over to the bartender. The young man raised an eyebrow at Alice in question before looking back towards the television.

"Is that... Ooh. Something you two were working on or... Can you even tell me that? Never mind. I understand, none of my business, etcetera..."

He wasn't, of course, at all aware of the significance of that one bullet found amongst the residue of what once had been a home.

Somehow, Darren managed to look somewhat disappointed, somewhat relieved and somewhat confused all in one expression. Regardless, he nodded and stood from the table with a hand curled around the neck of his guitar whilst the beer was left abandoned on the table. "I should probably head to the cupboard I call a dressing room and get my bag anyway," he replied. "Uh... I'll... see you both later, I guess? Cassie'll probably rope us together again. Nice seeing you again, Nathan, and nice to meet you, Alice."

Okay, so it had been a bit awkward between the group last time, but it seemed to have ended on kinda-sorta good terms. Nathan hadn't left without saying goodbye at their last group outing, plus he was going to have a literal home advantage - playing from his own field, so to speak.

That totally wasn't why he'd gone to the effort of hoovering every room in his small two-floor house, cleaned his bathroom and kitchen until the tiles gleamed and even made his bed.

If he had a dog, he'd have hoovered it too. Regardless, his acoustic six-string was sitting in it's usual (now polished) stand beside the TV, on the other side of which sat a box of general music equipment and a magazine rack full of sheet music. Darren ran a hand through his hair, checked that his shirt was tucked in and made sure his socks matched before finally sitting down on the Febreeze'd couch.

Yep. No effort at all went into this casual meeting.

Darren hopped off the couch as if it had said something insulting about his mother and then stabbed him in the arse with a fork when the knocking reached his ears. With another scowl around his living room (as if it may purposefully somehow become a complete and utter tip in the sixty seconds he'd have his back to it), Darren smoothed his shirt and wandered over to the front door to invite his guests inside.

After an awkward-ish pause upon actually opening the door, he waved wordlessly into the house before recalling that words were generally used when human beings came across one another.

"Hi! Uh..." He blinked at the guitar case for a second, then grinned up at the owner. "Come in? Cassie! Hello!"

Darren Samson merely raised an eyebrow at Nathan before cracking into yet another smile and turning towards Cassie. "Uh... What?" he questioned as he closed the door behind the pair and turned towards them. "I think you underestimate just how much my singing is worth," came the now rather cocky reply to the queries. "And the last owner drowned in the bath, but... yeah, we'll move over that -- I replaced the bath with a shower anyway!"

An uncomfortable chuckle followed before he waved at the sofa. "You can take a seat there, if you like - do either of you want something to drink? I've got tea, coffee, cola... I also have a bottle of vodka, but..." Darren shrugged. "Up to you!"

Darren Samson nodded in agreement with that sentiment -- far too early for vodka. He was going to stick to water for the moment. He was all for tea and cola, but dairy and sticky soft drinks before singing? He didn't think so! Still, off he went to the kitchen, which was separated from the living room by just the one doorway, which he left open.

"D'you guys take milk or sugar or anything? I do have sweeteners too, if either of you are that way inclined!"

Whilst he spoke, Darren went about filling up and boiling the electric kettle and placing a couple of mugs on the counter.

Darren Samson snorted at the pair's banter and made the tea as per their expectations. "I personally have milk in my tea," he informed the two as he carried the two cups through to the living room and placed them on the short table in front of the sofa (it had been covered in sheet music, but that had been tidied away prior to their arrival). "There you go. Pink cup for Nathan and yellow cup for Cassie. Which was accidental. I forgot which had sugar," he stated sheepishly.

"You all tuned up?" he then asked with a gesture towards Nathan's guitar. "Nice, by the way. Black's a good colour."

Darren Samson shrugged his shoulders. "I don't know all that many musicians to be honest - a couple of the girls who play ladies' night at the Station Hotel, and usually they're too busy laughing about something or other to do anything remotely like jamming. Last time I did jam with a mate, we just played about with a few arrangement ideas and so on," Darren nodded as he went to the one other seat in the room (a short stool that looked like something that had scratches around the spools connecting the leg -- Darren had been using it to record his covers, by the looks of things, and used the stool as a place to sit, play and attached his acoustic mic to), picked up his guitar and settled down on it, facing the others.

"Go ahead, Nathan," the younger man allowed with an almost charming grin as he idly checked the tuning of his prized possession. "You've heard me already; the floor is yours."

Well, Darren wasn't 'floored' so to speak, but he was pleasantly surprised. He'd expected Nathan to be terribly good, but what he hadn't expected was that the guy really did push himself into the music -- and Darren figured that if the guy was comfortable enough to just close his eyes and go with it, he was pretty damn into it.

"... that was great," Darren agreed a moment after Cassie spoke. "You were great, I mean. Wow. I wasn't sure to expect and that..." The young musician lifted a hand and made a motion over his head with it. "Way above what I expected," came the grinning accolade. "I'm not one to be outdone, however!"

That said, Darren settled his fingers over the frets and started plucking out a rather familiar tune -- he'd sang this before, at the Station Hotel, but this version was far from an emotionless and synthesised backing track.

"Baby, can't you see? I'm callin'; a guy like you should wear a warning... You're dangerous and I'm falling..."

The acoustic worked far better with Darren's voice, and although the melody hadn't been altered so much, the rhythm had. It was far more about interacting with the guitar than with the audience, and that was where Darren worked best.

He, of course, was too much of a showman to just close his eyes and work through it, so he had to go between winking at Cassie and grinning at Nathan (or was it the other way round?) as he went through the song.

Until three very certain knocks came on the door, and then a man just strolled in, all cocky confidence.

Darren ended on a terrible discord and grimaced.

Shit.

"Alright, Samso -- alright, gorgeous?" John Watson-James had noticed the female present and switched straight into charming mode. "You finally get a girlfriend, Pansy?"

"... Hello, John."

Darren Samson shook his head. This was going to get worse, he could tell just by the look on Cassie's face and he knew the look on John's face. The older man was just looking for someone to irritate or piss around with.

"Um... Uh --"

"Don't strain yourself, Pansy," John snorted, rolling his eyes at Darren's inability to form coherent words. "I'm John Watson-James," he said to Cassie and Nathan (mostly the former) as he held his hand out to the female. "You can call me John."

"That's your name, what else are they gonna call you..?" Darren muttered, returning his guitar to its stand. "He's not my roommate," he added to Nathan.

"Go get me a cola, Samson."

"I've got guests, John."

"I can see that, Pansy. I'm a guest too."

Darren stood at that point and retreated to the kitchen, scowling at his current predicament. John was going to screw this entire thing up! He actually liked these people, and John was going to disgust them with his chauvinism!

With a growing smirk, John let his hand fall back to his side and turned a condescending look towards the kitchen, where one could hear Darren pottering about. "I call him 'Pansy' 'cause he's practically an honorary girl, what with all that gay shit he plays all the time. And yeah, we've been mates for a long time. Since I was seventeen, actually - his mother knew my father."

Darren returned at the point, holding a glass of water and a glass of cola. "Here." He didn't sound as pleased as he may have usually, and John nudged him with an elbow as he took his drink.

"Jeez, don't look so happy to see me, Princess. Try cracking a smile! It won't actually crack your face, you know."

Darren's face fell at what Cassie said -- he hadn't...

"Sure, I meant happy," John snorted, once again nudging Darren as if he were in on the 'joke'.

He had.

"Um. Well. I invited Nathan and Cassie over, John, and it really wouldn't be fair to subject Cassie --"

"To what?"

"To... to make her listen to us lads talk about... things."

The taller of the two flashed a grin at Cassie whilst the other continued to look worried. "Aw, I'm sure she won't object to me staying, right?"

"No, but... John, please?"

"What? What's your problem, Pansy?" John scowled, head tilted as he stared down at the younger man. "Y'trying to flirt with her or something, 'cause we've both seen how that goes and it never ends with you and a girl gettin' together."

Darren Samson was torn between crying and having a hissy fit, both of
