Public History

Born out of wedlock to one of Miles Hagan's many lovers, Dominic was raised by his mother, Lia Tharow, for most of his childhood. At age eight, he watched Ha'la'tha assassins gun her down in broad daylight on account of an ongoing feud between the Guatrau and his father. Traumatized by the event, Dominic lived with Miles and his half-sister Julia for a short while, scorning his responsibilities and neglecting the affections of his family and peers. At age thirteen he abandoned them, travelling abroad to study and educate himself on various planets throughout the Multiverse. He spent the next thirteen years adventuring across the galaxy, attending various intergalactic schools and drowning his troubles with parties and liquor.

Despite the debaucherous nature of his travels, Dominic did not completely spurn his academics. A gifted scholar, the young Hagan studied at a myriad of different universities across the galaxy. Although his adventures were not closely documented, media coverage suggest that he first resumed his education at the Imperial Academy on Niihama. There he earned a minor degree in economics and galactic history. He also studied martial arts under the Tsuki Hana dojo, and nearly achieved the rank of Senpai before he was expunged for 'dishonorable conduct'. The specifics of his expulsion are vague.

After Niihama, Dominic traveled to Terra and began studying at Harvard and Academia Everia; business at the former... chemistry, physics and arcane theory at the latter. Despite his natural Aschen inability to use magic, Dominic did well at Everia, learning much of the natural and mystic sciences alike. His combative abilities were also tested at Everia where was trained in a variety of martial skills and weapons in accordance with the academy's curriculum.

Upon receiving his degrees at Harvard and Everia, Dominic dropped the academy and focused solely on Harvard, looking to earn his intergalactic law degree as quickly as possible. He was in his second year when he was expelled over a serious on-campus fight that resulted in the hospitalization of four other students. A mandated search of his on-campus apartment conducted after his reprehension revealed a stockpile of drugs and booze stashed away in his rooms. Only twenty at the time, Dominic escaped incarceration through a series of discrete bribes and a generous donation to the college's funds.

Being expelled from Harvard seemed to change Dominic. He took a two year hiatus, during which time his activities and whereabouts are completely unrecorded. Only his best friend and former schoolmate in Everie, Ivan Viggo, accompanied him during this time. Wherever he went, he returned again to Terra, only for a year, where he studied briefly at the renown Volarian Arts Guild. He learned much about crafting and engineering, though he received no formal degree. After this, he left Terra and made for Coalition space. He resumed his studies of intergalactic law at the university of West Biko on Akorant and graduated at the age of twenty-six.

His studies complete, Dominic returned to Langara with Ivan, seeking to reconcile with his father and make a name for himself. Miles, weary of his responsibilities to Tech Con and eager to retire, recognized the change in Dominic and handed the company over to his son. Now the leader of the one of the most powerful corporate giants in the Multiverse, Dominic is eager to extend his company's influence to the far reaches of the Multiverse and bring the Confederacy into a new golden age of prosperity. With a slew of successful business endeavors already under his belt, the young Hagan seems set out to win. Young, ambitious and rich... what CAN'T Dominic Hagan accomplish?

"Yes, I wanted to thank you," Dominic nodded, settling into his seat as the car began rolling through the wealthier suburbs of Caprica, "you did a very brave thing back there. I can't think of any planet that hates Terra more then Langara right now. To come here peacefully and engage our politicians directly..." he perked a brow, grinning, "...and moreover, to actually make a valid point that stalls a parliamentary decision... well. That's just downright impressive." He reclined into his chair, slightly loosening his tie. "Really. I can't help but admire you. Walking into the lions den and talking them down from their perches... I wouldn't have had the guts."

"As I recall it, you did your share of speaking as well," Rhea reminded him. "You also represent a company with prominent holdings on Terra. I can recognize modesty when I see it," she told him with a knowing smile.

"And truthfully it's refreshing to be afforded an opportunity to fight battles with words for a change. I have seen and fought in enough wars to last me a lifetime over."

Given that the woman scarcely looked into her twenties, it seemed likely that she was either lying, or she was older than she looked. She certainly didn't have the look of a soldier, nor a warrior.

Dominic laughed musingly. "I think you confuse modesty with honest idiocy. This whole 'speech and debate' thing was never really my forte. My meager input only served to strengthen the Imperialist ideals." He reached out towards the shelves, selecting a bottle of thick green liquid. He looked at Rhea out of the corner of his eye. "...there's still a lot of them left, y'know. Imperialists. Elitists." He laughed again, procuring a glass from a cupboard. "...I mean, I suppose ALL Aschen are elitist in one way or another, but I think you know what I mean. You'll find a battalion of men and women in any given suburb who wouldn't even breathe in the same general direction as you. I don't think I need to tell you how dangerous a place Caprica can be for a Terran right now." He poured a modest fraction of the liquor into his glass, nodding towards Rhea. "Can I get you something to drink?"

"Oh I'm not a Terran," Rhea replied. "Though I imagine many won't make the distinction. I have lived there for many years."

"And please," Rhea added to the offered drink.

"I believe the TNG felt that a neutral voice would hold more weight than that of a natural born Terran on this matter."

Dominic delicately handed the fine ambrosia to Rhea, quickly procuring another another glass and fixing himself a new drink. "Not Terran? That's peculiar. Though I suppose it's a fine diplomatic move on the TNG's part." He resumed his seat, returning his attention to Rhea. His eyes narrowed, as if he were making some careful inspection.

"Yes, the less Terran you are, the better," he smiled, quickly reverting back to his usual expression of easy-going complacency. He sipped tenderly at his drink. "I think you're going about it the right way. Mingling with the people. Not backing down from the public podium. You seem capable of defending your ideals eloquently and rationally enough." He cleared his throat, his brows knitting together. "Of course, I should hope that you're capable of defending more then just your ideals." He looked seriously at Rhea. "As I stated earlier, this is not a good time to be a foreigner on Langara. The Aschen people are recovering not only from the devastating effects of terrorism, but from the cultural shock of transitioning from an Empire back into a Confederacy. Billions of people literally woke up one morning and discovered that their religion, societal traditions and government trust was merely an elaborate illusion."

He took another sip of his glass, setting it down in a small disc near his chair. The glass levitated in the air, held perfectly parallel to the street below. It wouldn't spill even if the car jolted or shook. "...do you... HAVE security, Rhea? The means to protect yourself if it comes to that?" He held up his hands. "I mean... gods forbid... but y'never know."

"Sometimes it is times like these in which change is most easily received," Rhea replied. "Change is far harder to provoke once people have fallen into complacency."

She took a sip of her glass as he asked into the matter of security.

"I'm afraid there hasn't been time for such matters. My arrival here was impromptu at best," she explained. "I had all of a day to prepare to speak before the Quorum."

"Don't take me as naive. There simply wasn't time to see to everything that needed seeing to. The Quorum wasn't going to wait around. Matters of security will be a greater concern once I get settled into a routine and begin classes at the university."

Dominic looked intently at the Aeloran. "With all due respect, Rhea, the university and your future speeches will mean very little if your hotel room is bombed tomorrow morning. The Aschen are ruthless and vengeful when stirred to action. Many of the Imperialist you shook hands with in the Quorum today would very much like to see your corpse." He sipped his ambrosia, watching her carefully. "I'm not trying to scare you. I don't think you're the kind who scares easy." He smiled respectfully. "...I'm just... asking you to consider the serious possibility that, during your stay here in Caprica, an attempt will be made on your life." He turned in his chair, directing himself more towards Rhea. "Obviously you can understand why this bothers me. Your death would be an absolute tragedy; a complete tear-down of all the diplomatic structure that's been so delicately built between our nations." He nodded, grinning again. "...apart from being an intelligent, beautiful and uniquely talented woman, you represent a significant investment. If you fall, all hopes of peace with Terra fall too." He shrugged, his expression honest and frank. "...and if Terra falls, I lose quite a bit of money."

He reached into his suit jacket, fiddling around in his pockets. "With that in mind, I would be happy to arrange some security for you?" he smiled enthusiastically, "nothing too intrusive, of course. If you even allowed me to assign you ONE bodyguard, it'd make an enormous difference." He retrieved a small touch-screen from his jacket, his fingers flying over the pad with impressive dexterity.

"...free of charge, of course."

Dominic Hagan was fidgeting in his chair, blinking rapidly at the trio of holo screens in front of him. His fingers flew across the virtual paperwork and the keyboard on his desk in a backbreaking pace. His jacket and tie lay thrown over a nearby coat rack, and the dress shirt he WAS wearing was open at the neck and looked slightly wrinkled for wear.

His intercom buzzed.

"Answer," he said absently, eyes still glued to his work.

"Mr. Hagan," the voice of his secretary filtered through the intercom, "we have some issues about sleeping arrangements for some of our... um... guests."

"We don't have enough beds?" Dom's brows furrowed. He reached out towards a virtual copy of a contracting license and flipped to the next page.

"I'm afraid not, sir. We're about nine beds short."

"Order them immediately. Call Braxton down on Luxem and put in for a special order. Try and have them shipped here in the next two hours. Large beds, mind you. I won't have them sleeping on cots."

"Yes sir. Right away sir."

The intercom went dead. Dominic continued to work furiously for another minute or so... before pushing himself away from his desk, inhaling sharply and running his hands through his hair. Just a little break.

Whisper appeared without warning, a vague whispy apparation that rapidly took form in front of Dominic's desk. As the strange substance drew together into the form of Whisper, it became apparant perhaps how the girl had come and gone unnoticed from the rooftop of the building Dominic had last met her upon.

She looked better than she did when they last spoke. The bandages about her eyes were gone and in place a set of blue irises looked upon Dominic. There was a healthier flush to her skin and the gauntness had faded from her cheeks as well. Wherever she had been, it seemed to be treating her well. Perhaps it had something to do with the grey uniform she wore that marked has a member of the Aschen Special Projects Division - a fact not too far off mark from Dominic's original assumptions as to where the strange girl had come from.

"Dominic," she said before looking away to avoid eye contact. "I wanted to speak with you."

The oddity of her abrupt appearance after several months off Langara seemed to go unnoticed by the girl as she got right to the point of the matter.

But before the weary Aschen refugees could be filed into the nearby buses, they would be told to wait by a team of Tech Con security barring their entrance. An announcement needed to be made first.

Stepping up onto a nearby podium, Dominic Hagan rose to a microphone, much to the enthusiastic applause of the already frenzied crowds. He smiled charmingly, waving to the masses and bowing humbly.

"Thank you!" he called out, his voice ringing clear and true through the white-noise, "thank you!" The crowd quieted a bit, though was still far from silent. "Today," he continued, "is a day of triumph! Today, we bring home the last thirty-two refugees of the Caprican disaster! The last thirty-two heroes of a tragic and devastating chapter in our nation's history. We celebrate their safe return, as we do also celebrate the rescue of hundreds of other Capricans, already recovering in Tech Con's designating refugee camps!" Thunderous applause. Cameras flashed. People roared. Dominic raised a hand, calling for quiet once more.

"Seeing as how our camps are already nearly filled, it is my esteemed pleasure to welcome these thirty-two remaining brave souls into my own personal mansion for the duration of their recovery. I ask that the refugees now step into these buses, where they shall be taken to my home as honored guests!"

More applause and cheering. The refugees would be ushered into the buses by Tech Con agents.

Dominic turned on his toes, first alarmed at the intrusion and then confused.

"..Jacquelyn?" he looked positively confounded, "...Jacquelyn, is that you?" He stepped around his desk. "Good gods woman, how did you get-..." He stopped himself, noting how she outright avoided eye contact with him.

"...are you alright?"

I'm fine," Whisper replied. "I just... I wanted to talk to you about something."

Her reason for coming here had been simple enough, but standing here it seemed awkward now to put it into words.

"Do you have a minute?" she asked.

Whisper shook her head. "I'm fine," she reiterated at his offer of a drink and a seat.

"I wanted to ask you -" she hesitated and rubbed at her brow lightly.

"Do you remember the poem you were reading, before?" she asked.

The question seemed peculiar and random for the girl to have come all the way to Luminere to inquire into it.

"Uh," Dominic froze, halfway through the motions of procuring a pitcher of water and two glasses, "...yeah. Of course. 'The Redemption of Paragon'. The fairy-tale." He set the items down, rolling up his sleeves and leaning against his desk. All of this was incredible strange, of course... but Jacquelyn HAD been a rather strange girl, from what he'd gathered. He'd met her on the roof of his building, after all. Wearing a blindfold.

"What about it?" he perked a confused brow.

"You didn't finish it," she explained. "Do you have a copy?" she asked. "Here?"

"It's..." she shook her head.

What was she supposed to say. A man had shown up in a Terran alley bearing the name of the very same poem that Dominic had been reading to her?

"I'm trying to figure some things out. It might help."

Though she looked physically healthier, her posture still betrayed her unease at speaking with Dominic much as it had back in Caprica. The aversion of her eyes remained prevalent.

"Yeah, I have a copy," Dominic was only further flabbergasted. She sneaks into his room in the middle of the night after not seeing him for weeks... to borrow a book? Deciding not to question her outright, Dominic walked over to one of his bookshelves, quickly selecting a medium-sized volume. "This is a book of fairy-tales from the Milky Way." He nodded. "Should have the Terran, Aschen and Scatteran versions of the story in it. It's written in Anquietas. You can read that, right?" He moved back to Whisper, weighing the book in his hand. He looked cautiously up at the girl.

"...Jacquelyn, can you look at me? Please?"

"I can read Anquietas," Whisper replied.

As Dominic held onto the book in favor of asking her to look at him, she glanced to him briefly, but her eyes shifted away again as they met his. Again she rubbed at her brow as if to sooth a headache.

"I'm sorry I shouldn't have intruded like this, I should go. May I borrow it?" she asked.

"No, really, I don't mind," he stepped closer, smiling, "I don't want you to feel like you can't come here. You're always welcome here. Here and everywhere else I own." He gestured towards her face. With the book secured Whisper turned to leave, though she hesitated a moment.

"Thank you," she said quietly.

"I don't think I'll be back again," she added. "I'll have the book sent to you."
