Drakus Breeding Dragons

The various kinds and their details

0 · 183 views · located in Terra

a character in “The Multiverse”, originally authored by Patcharoo, as played by RolePlayGateway

Description

Dragons
The most ferocious natural predator in the world, available for purchase from an egg. All dragons have the capability of mounted flight and have a magic resistent hide. Dragons are not being sold for meat or for their magical properties.

Forest
The most common forest dragon for sale are medium to small sized of their species (which is still as large as a big horse). Most are built to be more agile hunters rather then the dominant and heavy hitting larger dragons. They will usually sail over the tree tops using their keen eyes to locate prey, then swoop down, an agile form allowing them to slip through the trees and land on or pick up a meal. They usually live alone but have been known to accept a mate into their territory, especially if food is plentiful. This species has the ability to spray out a noxious gas which initially chokes the target and stings the eyes, but prolonged exposure can result in coughing up blood and eventual death. Surviving prolonged exposure can also result in severe brain damage. The gas is comparitive to an extremely weak nerve gas.

Mountain
There are two main breeds of mountain dragons, Blue and Red. All mountain dragons available are very territorial, being dangerously aggressive to other who enter their territory. They also are the largest of the species and the most dominant. The Blue variety possess a deadly lightning breath, use to intimidate others that approach their territory or just outright kill those who get too close. Red have the traditional flame breath, capable of searing flesh straight off of bone.

Swamp
From the swamps come the deadly black dragons, similar cousin to the forest dragon but with a few small differences. The first difference is their hunting style, preferring to ambush prey rather then striking them from above. They will often lie in murky water or mud puddles, then lash out violently to kill their intended meal. The second difference is their breath, also a gas, but a blacker one which on inhalation rots the insides of a person. It can also result in permanent blindness if an individual gets it directly in their eye.

Coastal
The coastal dragons are dramatically different to other breeds, lacking all forms of breath attack and being much more social. They often live on cliff edges, using a streamlined form to carry them out over the water and quickly dip in to pick up fish to eat. Often they are seen in large numbers on cliff sides, especially where large numbers of fish are common. They often are a light blue colour, similar to that of the sky, but with different coloured highlights on their wings, feet or tail.

Jungle
The jungle dragon varies much from the forest dragon, being for a start much more colourful and brighter then their other counterparts, but using this to blend into the brightly coloured jungle environment of flowers and trees. They hunt on the ground using their quick forms to maneuver through the jungle trees. The jungle dragons have an unpleasant goop for a breath, viscous and sticky like tar in nature, but both acidic and poisonous, resulting in a slow corrosion like a weak acid. It also will make an individual feel hot and sluggish over time, also making them sweat heavily.

Desert
The bronze dragons of the desert are close relations to the red dragons of the mountains, the main differences being a more tanned appearance to match their lifestyle and being smaller. They also have been known to shovel sand onto their back to lie in wait as an ambush technique, but they are fully capable of hunting regularly.

Plains
The dragons in the plains are cousins to those on the coast, though slightly larger and less social. They form smalls prides or packs to hunt as a group, directing their prey as lions would. Like the coastal dragons, they are lightly coloured with similar highlights to match their environment.

Tundra
The mighty frost dragons are the main other 'large' sized dragons. They have a powerful frost breath, sometimes sending a nasty hail of sharp ice. Found solely in cold climates their white scales allow them to blend with both the snow and the sky when it is snowing. They are extremely territorial like all big dragons.

Pet Sized
Pet sized dragons are all around the same size, roughly that of a cat. They possess no breath so they make perfect household pets. Just remember to have the claws blunted and to train them not to chew on children. Come in a variety of colours. Are actually closer to lizards, then dragons.

Other Creatures
Drakes
Drakes are distant cousins to the dragons, often closer to dinosaurs or giant lizards then anything. Most are aggressive, large, breathless and wingless.

Arachnids
Giant arachnids are available for those who wish to purchase a multi-legged and poisonous creature to ride or serve as a war-beast.

Liz turned her head for the moment, giving Avia a quick glance, as if sizing her up. "You came to the right place," she replied, voice very professional, scientific and definitely edgy. She seemed like a tense individual. "Just in time too. Come on, I'll take you out the front. Today you're going to go for a walk with a man called Jorin. He's going to be after some samples, record the dragons behaviour, what it eats or ate. You're tagging along, just to see how it works. In a couple of weeks time you'll have to do it alone. It should take about an hour, maybe longer. Might be boring. Some of the workers take a book or magazine."

She paused and exhaled, then offered out a hand. "Hi, I'm Liz. I'm the one in charge of the thirty plus staff required to breed dragons so the man upstairs only has to deal with the accounts." Judging by the lines on her face and the bags under her eyes her job was stressful, and she seemed to have a slight distaste for Drakus.

Liz shook her head. "No, he won't be expecting you to go with him, so just go wait out at the counter. Good luck out there. You might need it." Liz went back to studying the egg chamber in silence. Predictably out the front the security guard would offer over a laminated ID card. This was soon followed by a young looking man in full length green clothes with a small back pack of gear. He looked at Avia for a brief moment on his way to the door, as if curious about who she was.

Jorin nodded. "Yes, what can I do for you?" he asked patiently. "I'm just about to head out, so I can't stay and give you a tour if you're new here." Most of the staff knew each other just from being here from the start. But now they were moving into 'stage two' there were a few new employees popping up.

Jorin laughed, then nodded towards the door. "Yeah, come on. We'll get out there and we can talk on the way, if you like." He wasn't about to pass up the opportunity to spend the next hour with a pretty lady alone in the forest. Sure as hell beat working by yourself! "So, ah, nice to meet you," he said, heading for the treeline a few hundred meters from the manor.

Jorin nodded. "A few months now. I was there when we first brought this dragon in," he said with a nod, "The green one in the forest. We've been keeping a special eye on her. She's ah, laid an egg recently and we're keeping an eye on her. We're planning on taking it this weekend. Not a safe business, but something we have to do. For now we're just making sure she's still healthy and so on." Jorin continued to talk about himself, the dragon and other relatively unimportant details as they trekked through the forest.

When close to the dragons site, Jorin got settled down on the ground and unpacked a few things, binoclars, paper etc. "And this is what we'll be doing for the next hour, before we try to ah, find samples." His voice went flat at the term 'samples'.

The dragon itself seemed restless, constantly glaring about, body curled around its nest.

"Ah, no, samples of, uh, stool samples." Great big piles of dragon poo. As time slowly passed the sun cast a strange angle causing a slight glinting of an object just to the side on a slope. Whatever it was, it was mostly buried by leaves.

There was a shuffling noise a few meters over, leaves rustling. Jorin glanced over in the direction of it for a moment, then went back to studying the dragon. "Yes, well, we're also meant to keep an eye out for whatever carcasses the dragon has happened to leave just lying about. Also, something seems to be upsetting her."

Jorin nodded slowly. "Well, no, not really. It shouldn't be human. But we need to make sure she's been keeping healthy. Eating well. And I don't know. It could be just someone she doesn't like, or a smell, food poisoning or just protective of her egg. Can't say for sure."

The object, on closer inspetion, appeared to be a diamond finger sticking out of the grass. But if one was to look a little closer, they would find it was attached to a full diamond hand, and then some.

The more Avia uncovered the more it became apparent that there was an entire diamond body just lying on the floor, covered in leaf litter, though half of it was hanging over the nearest edge of the river. Jorin stared for a moment, then looked up. "Oh," he said, pointing. Several branches, practically in a straight line, had snapped. Whatever this thing was, it had fallen.

It indeed appeared to be a full diamond man wrapped up in a cloak...? "Well, that could be what's disturbing her. A lucky find that one." He seemed entirely unconcerned about the fact that there was a diamond statue just on the floor.

There was a sudden lurch in the diamond statue as it apparently sprung to life, immediately setting both Jorin and the dragon to alarm, followed by the diamond statue sliding and falling into the river below with a whopping great thrump, with an accompanying shout of alarm on the way down.

It was Liz on the other side, and there was apparently some comotion going on in the background. "Avia? That you? Big news, the eggs hatching."

Drakus blinked. "The egg's hatc- Oh!" cried Drakus, immediately on his feet, only to drop back into his chair. Right, crutches Drakus, one step at a time.
Liz was waiting in the shed as expected, watching through a panel of glass as a repetitive tapping noise came from the egg on the other side. She raised her head to Avia, looking rather nervous. "You ready for this? It's a full time commitment. Once that thing sees you, you're locked in."

The path to the egg was clear, just the constant tapping noise of the creature inside trying to get out. "Avia, this might take up to an hour, have you got something to read just in case?" The egg, at this point showed no signs of cracking.
Drakus finally entered. "Have you got the trained and certified dragon breeder or vetenarian ready to take care of the dragon?" he said with a straight face. Liz blanched, prompting Drakus to chuckle. "Just kidding. Goodluck Avia."

Drakus raised an eyebrow. "I can't possibly take care of ten or fifteen baby dragons when I have to manage all the deliveries, staff and accounts as it is. This is a dragon breeding facility, its up to the staff to care for the newborns until the creatures can fend for themself. Then we steadily intergrate them into a natural environment, so they can continue to grow on their own." Drakus turned his head back towards the egg and quietly muttered, "Assuming the dragon lives..." There were always complications at birth.

Drakus shrugged. "There's not much research on this field right now, but based off other species and what we know, creatures brought up in captivity have a higher chance of survival." He would have folded his arms had he not had to hold himself up. Liz herself was pressed against the glass. It was a wonder, really, to see a dragon hatch. Not many were privelleged to see it. It didn't compare to seeing the first few moments of a dragon in nature, but it was still something.

"When it hatches, Avia, you're going to need to grab onto it," called the woman, eyes intent. The shell was still cracking, which was rather fortunate, as this process could take quite some time.

Drakus shrugged sheepishly. He didn't have an answer. "Just a green," said Liz, "Nothing dangerous." The egg started to split fully, the shell lifting up slightly to reveal a bumpy green head, nose shoving on the shell to break out of it. "Don't help it," cautioned Liz, "They have to get out on their own."

The top cracked open more fully, the slick green body reaching up and pulling itself out. Already the dragon seemed exhausted, though it was just new. The egg tilted, allowing the dragon to crawl weakly onto the table. It layed there for a moment, breathing air for the first time. The creature was roughly the size of a very small dog already, but that was understandable since it ended up the size of a horse.

"Go on, Avia," urged Liz quietly.

The creature mostly just laid there, getting used to breathing and being in the outside. Patiently it sniffed at Avia and its eyes closed for a moment. A high noise came from the creatures throat, apparently a chirp of sorts. It was all smiles on the other side of the glass. "Congratulations, Avia," said Drakus with a satisfied sigh, "You're the proud mother of a baby dragon." He chuckled to himself. He leant over slightly to Liz and added, "Get a grasshopper for it to eat or...?"

Liz shook her head. "No, it'll be fine for an hour, I'm sure. For now we should get the vet in, have a look at it. Hey, you going to give it a name?"
