The Unwilling Protector

Occupation: None

Age: 22
Height: 6'2"
Weight: 250

Species: Human
Race: Unknown
Affliction: Collarbound

Birthplace: Sozo
Nationality: Pakecha
Current Residence: Terra

Equipment:
Polearm

Personality

Cold, curt, and calculating, Duke is not the most social of men, nor is he the kindest of them. It is difficult to read his eyes, as they stay as frigid as an icy wasteland, and his mouth, just as silent. It takes patience to be with this man for that reason, and one cannot begin to mention his constant, brooding temper.

So begins...

Duke Smith's Story

Up ahead, the scene played out in front of Duke fluidly. At first, he just kept walking calmly, acting as if it were just a scene from a play. His hands were in his pockets, and he rolled one shoulder back, stretching it. Then, he stopped. Simply stopped, standing in one place, his eyes lifting to both Taylor and the culprit.

Taking his time, he took the pole arm from its strap upon his back and grasped it into one hand. The weapon was beautiful. The polished handle was a dark red, and the blade was long, thin, and sharp. There was some type of script on one side of it, but it was in a foreign language.

Duke held out the other hand, using it to aim for just the right spot. He closed one eye for a few sparse seconds, then threw the pole arm.

It soared through the air, making an audible whoosh, and, if he had aimed right, would pierce right through the arm of the man holding Taylor down. Duke walked, once more, calmly toward them.

He acted as if this were an every day thing. With a man bleeding for the pole arm's blade through his arm, and a woman who had just been assaulted by this same man, Duke thought it might very well have been an every day thing. Same shit, different girl.

Yup. That was it.

"Hope you didn't fall on your ass too hard," he said to her, a dead sarcasm leaking from his voice as he looked at her. He took out his water bottle, unscrewed the cap, and began to walk to the screaming, bleeding man. He took a long gulp of water and stood in front of him. When he finished, he wiped his mouth and took a breath.

"Well?" he said. He pointed his chin to the weapon. "I want that back, you know."

As they rode, he took out the water bottle again, and drank. He drank almost until all of the liquid was gone before he capped it and placed it into a pocket attached to his traveling bag. "Alright."

He could already tell that they would need to camp out. He did not much care if Taylor liked that or not. She did not look like she would mind, but then again, one never knew.

The man kept walking, going a ways away from the camp. His polearm was leaning on a tree a few feet from the fire. He would be gone for just a few minutes. His heavy footsteps could be heard coming back. He wasn't much a silent fellow. Not when he did not need to be. That was usually someone else's job.

He found Taylor sitting down. He stared at her, as if she had done something strange, made a face, and kept walking until he reached the tree with his weapon. He made no comment. Duke slid down the tree, sat down, and positioned the weapon so it was leaning on his shoulder.

"Pickled cream." he mumbled.

To most, and at times, even to the creator, it was difficult to even imagine what happened behind those cold, glassy eyes. Within them reflected the fire, but even then, the flames failed to give warmth to his stare. Within the brooding reflection of his eyes was something else: a deep rooted sadness. A look that he hid cleverly. Only one person knew the cause of that stare.

"Far away," he answered her. Really, had she expected anything else? He drew one leg up towards him, and propped his elbow upon his knee.

Duke sat in silence. Nothing surprising there. To be truthful, he was legitimately tired. He was not completely healed, and though he showed no signs of it, his fever was still there, and his throat, still parched. It was a priority to get to the city tomorrow. He needed water. He was not about to ask, either.

Before he dozed off, he watched Taylor sharpening the sword. Not an unusual sight. In ways, she reminded him of the last traveling partner he had. Just days ago. Without taking in account of his actions, his hand came up to his throat, where the black line lay beneath the high collar of his shirt.

The man did not smile, though he shrugged, quite possibly his way of expression of amusement. He ordered something from the bartender as well, giving the elven woman, Fedelia who winked and grinned to him, the appropriate amount of money.

"No." he said to her, as if he got the gist early. He then left the counter and fell back to Taylor's table. He noted the wet chair.

"What kind of mess did you make?"

"Skilled." he said. Always either a short answer or one word. Nothing more, but always less. He took a sip of his ale and remained standing. Even as Taylor gave him her hair and went for another, he did not sit down. He just stood at the table, looking at her like she was an idiot.

He did not continue to speak, no. Only looked about the drama and sighed. This place was ridiculous.

"I'm not glowering," he replied. "You're sensitive."

Never did these comments end. He did not sit, and he did not stop looking at Taylor, either. He just kept drinking his beer like it was coffee in the early hours of the morn, when in fact, it was alcohol in the late hours of the night. After a very long moment, which probably annoyed Taylor to the greatest power, he slowly- and he did this just to get on her nerves- bent his knees, and took a seat.

"Koinkidink? Your vocabulary is cryptic."

Duke kept on drinking, apathetic, as usual, though he still was listening somewhat to the things she had to say. Though it was only to pass the time, he kept his ears open. However, as she kept speaking, he became more and more interested. He leaned over the table and lifted his hand, poking out a finger that he used to point to his head.

"Long hair?" he asked, "Dark?" He was genuinely interested, but because this sounded like someone he knew. Someone he needed to avoid.

"Legs out?"

While it might not have left them, something, or rather, someone was going to interfere whether they liked it or not. A polearm with a blue handle, one that the girl might have recognized well, fell in front of the man, nearly embedding itself into his foot.

Walking down the path and passing them was yet another man, his brown hair and unshaven face a clear sign to Taylor of who he was. He would try to push the girl in front of him, urging her to walk.

He said nothing.

Would Duke really have asked? Taylor knew him little and already she should have picked up on that aspect of him. He glanced at her, fearlessly looking back into her eyes as she searched his. When she took out all the supplies, he glanced at them for only a second.

"Looking for something you can't find?" he asked. He could have been talking about several things. While Taylor cleaned the wound, his eyelids twitched, but otherwise, he did nothing else.

Duke looked off to the side as she did this, eyes as fierce and intent as ever. He drew his lips thin and narrowed those lids again, closing his fingers into a fist. "I'm not running." he replied tautly.

He hadn't much to say. Duke never did, not even around his normal partner. There was one other, in the past, but no more. No more.

Duke did not stir, and, just as expected, just as thought, he said not one word. However, as Taylor turned and walked away, one eye blinked open to watch her go.

---

Down the road, a young woman strode, her hair in an intricate updo, held by blue wires and pins. They framed her face, bangs dropping below a near nonexistant bosom dwarfed by wide hips. Rather pear shaped, she was. Almost unrecognizable from the woman Taylor had met in Gambit's bar that one night.

"She probably already knows who you are. Probably seen you with me. Don't mess with her, and she wont get to me. Clear?"

As always, it was for selfish reasons. He let go, but slowly. "I don't need to be seeing her. Not ever again." With that, he stood, then looked the opposite way, down yet another alley.

That's when he heard it.

"Duuuuuuke!" came that loud, wailing cry. His eyes shot open in complete panic. Sweat rolled down his neck. "Duke! C-"

Before he could hear the rest, he clamped his hands over his ears. If he couldn't hear it, he didn't have to do it! He didn't!

"Come baaaaack!"

No answer.

"You don't have to hurry. That'll only kill you faster," he said, his hands in his pockets, his eyes staring out straight ahead of him. His tone was flat, harsh, almost, and he walked as if he did not have a care in the world.

Once they were deep in the woods, about fifteen minutes of only walking, he would finally stop and turn around. Cold eyes stared at her.

"I'm going to teach you how to be self-sufficient. So you know when she's on your trail again. She's going to use you to get to me somehow. I'm not sure."

He nodded, then went on to his next step. He slipped off his boots. Luli was famous for prancing around barefoot.

"Again."

He walked around to face her, calming his breath. She was smart. She was using just what he needed her to, but she needed to hear it even better. She needed to be aware at all times. For anything.

When he walked around to her back, he raised a hand, then thumped her somewhat gently on her shoulder. Hard enough for a shock, but soft enough so she wouldn't get a bruise.

"Try to stop me."

He walked around her again. The breeze swept by, rustling the leaves, making it harder to hear the footsteps. This time, his clothing shuffled before he tried to thwack her on the shoulder. There was no breath again. There was deadness in everything about him but the shuffle.

The street was a bit bustling today, people running about, shops filled to the brim. Someone was walking across the street, looking the other way. She would crash right into Taylor and stumble. It was a very tall busty woman wearing red with a rum bottle in her fingers. She gained her balance and tapped Taylor on the shoulder before going on her way. "Sorry, dear, sorry!" she apologized.

Back into the crowd, there was a man with broad shoulders. He did not have his weapon, not right now, and he seemed to blend in with the crowd for it. He caught sight of the girl, but did not make a move toward her. Instead, he kept walking, keeping out an eye.

He nodded, thinking about how much time he had. His hands curled into fists, but his features remained neutral. How was she able to find them so quickly?

"Did she do anything to you?" he asked. His eyes lingered onto her neck. He did not see anything. Not yet. "Did she touch you?" Strange question, but a necessary one. Why? Because Luli could have trapped this one too.
