Personality

Duncan was raised to be the next chieftain of his clan and this fact influenced his personality. Duncan has a strong moral conscience and sense of nobility, protecting the weak and innocent. He punishes the evildoers and is very loyal to no point. He is also being often criticized, sometimes in jest other times not – for his rigid sense of honour and determination to intervene in events that often place him in danger. He feels responsible for others and when he thinks people died for him, he then feels he has to avenge them. As much as he can’t have children he likes them and takes care of those he meets. He is very respected by both mortals and Immortals and considered by some to be one of the prime contenders for The Prize.

Duncan enjoys life as being said by Connor he has all the fun and the best women, although he is a womanizer, he shares his life with a few women he grows to love. He always stays loyal to their memories and cherishes the moments he had with them. Duncan is also a perfectionist and keen to learn new things, be it reading, playing Shakespeare or fighting skills, being cunning and very difficult to catch because he has experienced most everything life has to offer.

His memory is very good and can remember things from centuries ago. Duncan fulfils his duties and will always defend his head if challenged but he isn’t bloodthirsty and occasionally spares his opponents, especially female Immortals. He doesn’t hunt other Immortals for their heads, but he fights evil ones if they attack people he cares about, Duncan does not consider The Game his primary purpose in life and sometimes retires from it. He isn’t prejudiced against mortals and is generally very generous to mortals, and almost always tries to avoid hurting them. He has seen dozens of them age and die and thus acutely and sometimes bitterly knows how fragile they are. For this reason he protects them from other Immortals intending to harm them especially evil Immortals and dangerous consequences the game can have them.

Duncan feels that they have nothing to do with it and should not suffer from it. He doesn’t tell them about his immortality usually except when he trusts them with his life. He can never get used to death especially the death of his lovers. But it never prevents him from involving himself in life again.

History

Duncan was born a foundling like most Immortals, he was brought to the doorstep of the village Chieftan Ian MacLeod during the Winter Solstice of 1592 by a local peasant, knowing that his wife mary was upset about her stillborn son, the elder Macleod decided to claim the newborn infant. The loss of Mary's son was kept secret, and Ian raised Duncan in his hamlet near Glenfinnan as his and Mary's own.

Duncan grew up spirited and turned into a spirited, heroic young lad, well loved by the whole village. He struck it close with clan cousin Robert Macleod and the two boys would have all the manner of wild adventures together. One which led to danger and hiding in a remote cottage with a beautiful woman who pronounced the boy as special and marked with a destiny, this was Cassandra the witch of Donan wood. Sheltering him from death at the hands of Kantos and let him go to his worry stricken father when she deemed it safe. The first tragedy struck Duncan in 1618, when he found himself personally involved in clan intrigue. His childhood sweetheart, Debra Campbell, found herself betrothed to none other than Duncan's friend and cousin, Robert. As much as he protested he knew he could do nothing and mournfully presented a farewell gift, when Robert found out he wanted to battle leaving Robert to die and his hands and also losing his sweetheart after talking her out of jumping she loses footing and slips to her death.

Duncan soon found himself with his father in battle leaving the grieving aside; riding with his father into battle against the feuding clans, Duncan was struck down during a major battle, and was carried back to his home, where he expired before his parents. As his father rallied his crestfallen warriors, an old peasant woman witnessed the young MacLeod heir return to life, and screamed. A scared almost terrified Ian pronounced it the work of demons and disowned the bewildered highlander. In a black depression, Duncan wandered the Highlands alone, hunting food and sustaining himself, until he encountered Ian again. Attempting to reconcile himself with his father, Duncan was stunned when Ian revealed the truth about Duncan's origins. The young Highlander remained unfazed, however, proclaiming his adopted heritage at the top of his lungs.

After the death of his father and failing on slicing a head he met Connor Macleod and his future teacher. Connor had learned of Duncan's Immortality and had returned to Scotland to find and train his kinsman. Accepting Connor's offer of protection and education, Duncan traveled with Connor across Western Europe, learning about The Game, The Rules, and The Gathering, as Connor himself had learned from his own teacher, Juan SĂĄnchez Villa-Lobos RamĂrez. Connor enrolled his student in the finest dueling clubs, and taught young Duncan all of the tricks and techniques at his disposal. He instilled in his student a fierce desire for knowledge, both of combat and of the arts and sciences. When Connor deemed the time to be right, he returned Duncan to Scotland, preparing the younger Highlander to take his own path.

Duncan decided to travel eastward years later and found himself in the steppes of Russia, where he was soon challenged by a Cossack on a horse. Duncan's own horsemanship, however, proved up to the challenge, and he easily unhorsed his opponent, winning his respect. He had met with the leader an immortal Kristov who offered the highlander hospitality though it didn;t last when the battle with the enemy was a band of farmers, outraged he drew his blade against the Cossacks and prevented the slaughter with Kristov angered for revenge someday.

Hideo took the gaijin into his home and taught him the ancient art of the samurai and the two men became firm friends. However, Hideo’s daughter took a strong dislike to Duncan. Duncan wondered why and he soon realized why: being a feudal ruled country where foreigners are not alllowed, Hideo was sentenced to be executed by the Shogun for harbouring a Barbarian. Hideo was given the chance to commit HARA KIRI (Ritual suicide) in order to preserve his family's honor. Duncan wanted to help his friend, even telling him about his Immortality, but Hideo accepted his fate. He asks Duncan to be his second while he kills himself and offers Duncan his katana and Duncan in turn promises to protect Hideo’s family. Without answering, Duncan quickly dives into the river after his lost clansman. He fishes Connor out, and removes the dagger, restoring him. He fills his clansman in on what happened, and that he will not be returning to Tessa. Connor says that he understands, but Tessa won't. Noticing Richie watching from several yards away, Connor asks about him, and Duncan promises to watch over him.

Connor gives Tessa the news: Duncan is alive, and Slan won't be calling again. Guessing Duncan's actions, Tessa demands to know where Duncan went. Connor admits he doesn't know, but can guess. Taking Tessa with him, he arrives at Duncan's island retreat, still intact and now improved upon.

Duncan is convinced there never was any mysterious Immortal and that this is a ploy by Amanda. She is offended and, as Duncan leaves, he is challenged by an Immortal who doesn’t give his name, but clearly wants Duncan’s head. Riche later tells Duncan that he found Amanda with Zachary. Duncan decides to confront Amanda with what they have learnt, but has to deal with Tessa before he can leave the barge when she tells him how insecure Amanda makes her feel. Reassuring her that the thief is no competition, he goes to the circus, where Amanda gives in and tells him the truth. In which she agreed to offer Duncan’s head and 10 million dollors for a job.
