Duplicate

A silhouette of transparent camouflage stands before you; a clear bodily shape, but no specific features can be made out. This is the technological creation born from a mixture of the DNA of the world's greatest fighters.

a character in “The Multiverse”, originally authored by Nevan, as played by RolePlayGateway

Description

With thanks for Sarah-Liaa for the name. <3

Name: "Duplicate"; also known as "Version 1 of Comminus program".
Age: Eighteen months.
Race: Engineered Combat Clone.
Gender: Designed in the "male" image.

Appearance:
- Few specific body features.
- Colourless; a translucent form that is only visible when moving.
- The form of a toned male with shoulder length hair.
- No clothing is worn and no items are held on person, but too few features of the body are clearly visible for any "private parts" to be seen.

Personality:
- Personality?

Abilities and Characteristics:
- Superhuman speed, strength and reaction time.
- A swirling, near-transparent mist sometimes accompanies his body during fights or Superhuman feats, the mist being made up of millions of miniature Nanobots.
- Nanobots that repair his body and "carry" him, sometimes allowing him to be able to "float", although only for short periods of time.
- Short distance "teleportation", akin to various "Ninjutsu" techniques. If the "mist" is anywhere other than around his body, it is almost certainly for the Nanobots to prepare breaking him down into trillions of pieces, then take him to the location of the "other mist" and rebuild him, all within the blink of an eye.
- Trained in practically all martial arts and fighting styles to a master-esque level.

History:
- Version 1 of the Comminus program.
- Beta test; likely to be replaced.

So begins...

In the very corner of the bar, the light of the room was distorted... Though only barely, and one would only notice it if they got too close. But once they did, they may come to realize that a camouflaged being was lurking there, watching the people of the bar...

Duplicate stood strong; his motionless body blending perfectly into the surroundings behind him, while millions of miniature nanobots rushed around him to further redirect any off-putting light onto other areas of the room.

Practically invisible and highly deadly, it was only when he moved that he could be seen clearly enough to interact with - and even then, his toned male form remained a transparent silhouette, with no features of his body made clear.

The being seemed to be watching a pair of suited men drinking at the Counter, both of whom wore dark glasses and ear-pieces wound around the side of their heads. Duplicate seemed to be on the hunt... But his masters wanted more than them killed. They wanted information... And as long as that information remained unknown, the clone wouldn't touch them.

And for the first time, the transparent silhouette of Duplicate came flickering into view while he turned his head to face she who was so much like him. "What is it...?" He asked, replying to her in that same dull tone. One could easily mistake them for identical twins.

"The fact you noticed me is impressive, but unless you have a good reason, I am authorised to remove you from the field by force."

... But that itch at the back of his mind wouldn't go away. She was the same as him; he could feel it... But he hadn't been told there was another. So why had she appeared there, now?

Duplicate stood there, staring and listening to that translucent woman as she dropped her bombshell. Well then, this was a rather unfortunate turn of events... His eighteen months of life been for nothing; for him to be cast aside by this 'version 2' as though he was a failed prototype who would do nothing but hinder his Masters.

Duplicate seemed to lower his head and if his eyes could be clearly made out, they would likely be closing.

"I see," was all he said before he moved to brush past Triplicate; their arms and shoulders likely bumping together as he did so. There was no need for him to continue his mission now, so what was the point of remaining there?

No... He would go back to his Masters and await his end.

Duplicate stopped in his tracks, his form going still until it once again blended in with the surroundings. "Very well, I will listen to your idea," he answered. However, why the female would want to stop him from being deactivated, he had no idea. Was she not devoid of any feelings like himself?

But wait... Devoid of feelings? Then why had he felt disappointment at the announcement of his own execution? Why had he agreed to listen to her idea? Duplicate, now rather confused and having no other path to walk, turned himself back to Triplicate.

"If you are to be my successor, why would you want to help me?"

"Fine, just come out with your advise and be done with it. I would prefer to be around my 'replacement' as little as possible while this information... Sinks in.

The silhouette made to fold his arms. A foolish move, because if he was to suddenly be attacked that position put him at a disadvantage... But that's exactly why he did it. Would her outright knowledge make her as experienced as him?

There was a rather good chance that the woman before him knew him better than he himself... After all... Who else would the information needed to make a "better" version of himself come from, other than, of course, himself?

The nanobots who floated around him in a wispy mist were not just for his benefit... But also for those who created him.

"I don't like the sound of that idea," Duplicate answered honestly. "The creators haven't willed for me to do such a thing and going against their orders could anger them, make them deactivate me before my time."

"But... I shall think about it, because I have no other choice," the clone said, while turning his form away from Triplicate and towards the door. "I have already failed my mission today, something you played a part in... So accompany me so that I may finish it. I would very much like to learn more about my 'successor'."

And then he made his way towards the door, moving to leave the bar and head into Wing City.

"We are a strange pair, are we not?" Duplicate asked, already questioning his existence as he made his way thoughtfully along the road, side-by-side with Triplicate.

"To be only partially living... To be the objects created by a man's hand, with the DNA of some of the greatest fighters on this planet, yet bound never to know the things that make one 'human'. For example, being a child, a friend, a sibling, a lover or a parent. They created you because I had these thoughts, didn't they? They created you because I still had the ability to create opinions... And to have my own will. To think."

"You're a skilled, yet eventually pathetic attempt at creating an artificially intelligent assassin that does not question the orders of their masters... But... For some reason I feel as though they will never succeed. No 'pure' machine will ever reach our level, yet no-one of us will ever remain loyal forever... You, Version 2, who understands me the most, will meet the same fate as me in the end..."

"I won't let them execute me," Duplicate answered; his translucent figure making it's way along the pavement, before turning into a small side alley that acted as a short-cut towards a nearby motorway. From there they could get to down-town Wing City quite quickly.

"Even if that means I have to kill you, 'Replacement'."

His hand reached out to his side, an his fingers skimmed along a wall with grace. "But for now? I will continue what they want of me, besides, I'm curious to see how you are 'better' than me."

"That doesn't matter, what does matter is that you're the one they will use to execute me. I don't plan to let you succeed."

The Engineered Clone stopped in the alleyway, while the sky above became cloudy and rain began to fall; bouncing from his barely visible form and splashing back against the ground. He turned around to face Triplicate, then pushed his fingers into a fist until they clicked through effort.

"Why have you stopped?"

"I will not make the first move, so you have nothing to worry about in my presence until the order to end me comes. So come with me, I still have a mission to complete and you will be the one to aid me."

Duplicate turned around again; his back to his replacement and his arms folded by his front. "You see? I have let my guard completely down. I have no intention of fighting you..."

And so he began to walk through the rain, until the alleyway opened out onto a steep road that ran down a hill and further into the city. He then turned the corner, planning to leave Triplicate behind unless she followed him.

"There's a military research facility in this City, a rival to the one we belong to, if you will... My mission is to infiltrate it, destroy all data on their system, then secure the back-up copies and deliver them back to Comminus."

The man turned; not noticed by the civilians of the city when rain was pouring against the translucent pair so heavily. He began to walk down the hill towards the motorway at the bottom, while allowing his arms to drop to his side.

"But to get in, we need the security card of the Administrator. He keeps it in his guarded apartment, and so the first stage is my mission today... Find the Administrator, gain access to his apartment, steal the security code, then begin stage 2: breaking into the facility."

"Very well," Duplicate answered, before taking a single step from the sudden drop and fell down to the motorway with elegance. He hit the very edge of the road at the bottom, then began to sprint across; darting through traffic and jumping over lorries and cars.

After reaching the halfway point, he merely did it again, with perfect sync, until a single jump landed him on the back of a delivery truck. Standing above it with his arms folded across his chest, Duplicate assumed Triplicate was nearby as he "surfed" the Lorry down the motorway.

And then there came a long, slow turn, which was cut off at one side for road maintenance. This was Duplicate's target. In a single jump, he passed through the air, over the bridge, down over the workmen and then straight through an open-manhole, into the sewer systems below.

Hitting the murky, dank underworld at the bottom of that grizzly ladder with a splash, Duplicate began to walk along the first tunnel, once again assuming that Triplicate was right behind him.

"This will take us right to their back door," he spoke with a whisper. "If we can find the right path."

"The air doesn't smell as bad down there," he answered with a shrug; casually agreeing with Triplicate as he made his way down the right opening and started to continue along the tunnels.

"How old are you?" He asked, deciding to lighten the rather heavy load of the mission by starting some casual conversation. "Before today, I didn't know you existed. The same as I didn't know they could create us so easily... Are we in mass production?"

Duplicate suddenly stopped; the idea of future versions of him and Triplicate being mass produced slapped him like a wet fish. "No. I won't allow that to happen," he said rather firmly. "Two of us was bad enough, but more?"

He turned himself towards triplicate, the translucent image of his fingers closing into fists. "That is unfair. On me. On you. On them. I'm ending this mission now."

"You know as well as I do that even for us, bursting into there head on is suicide... At the same time, to make more of us, they require us..."

"I'll go into hiding until I find a way to destroy them. The most they can do is send a duplicate of 'you' after us, and that will take months to create... So I'll just disappear," he decided, as though he was making it up on the spot and hadn't particularly thought it through as well as he could have.

"What about you?"
