Kianna stepped off her small transport ship and onto the walkway of the landing pad in the Illumene space port. She was accompanied by a small squad of marines, a woefully unnecessary escort by her thoughts. However, the last time she had been to Arastel, insurgents had attacked her in this very same space port.

She had permitted the escort, if only to keep from riling the Quorum with 'unnecessary risks'.

It was one aspect of her station she had yet to grow comfortable with. Trusting her safety into the hands of others wasn't something that came easily to her, let alone in the hands of the Aschen military whom she regarded with some measure of disdain.

None of this showed upon her face though as she swept down the walkway and into the space port.

The armed escort turned some heads, but few recognized Kianna for who she was. This far from the Empire core worlds, her influence hadn't yet made a mark upon the civilian population. Without the crimson robes of the Black Hand, only those who closely followed Aschen politics might have recognized her as the Empress. That would change soon enough though.

The local news was already a buzz with news of the Emperor's arrival a few days ago, and Mollem's message to her on Cryo had informed her of his intents to engage in something of a PR campaign within Isiria to bolster morale against the insurgencies. It was for this reason she had cut her own plans short, to meet with him on Arastel.

She had been pleased with his decision to hang up the robes of the Divine Shadow, and present himself to the Isirians as simply Emperor Mollem McGregor.

That could all wait though, for now she was meeting with Echo, who was likely awaiting her arrival at the entrance to the space station.

Echo stood in silence, waiting for Kianna just inside the space port. The silver-haired boy had spent the last few months on Illumene in relative peace. His assignments had been research-based, analysing Avaeon DNA and technology within labs thanks to his ability to provide a more thorough scan and assessment than any technological equivalent that the Aschen or Isirians had access to.

Outside of work hours, he'd done his best to live what approximated for a normal life. Of course, he hadn't really been sure what that was at first. For the most part, he'd spent his time learning about the city and its people. Every new piece of technology, every book or article, every new person was a well of knowledge that his inquisitive mind drew from as much as it could.

He'd been enjoying it, even as the number of new experiences dwindled slightly with his growing comprehension of the world. So when he'd got word that he was to meet the Empress when she arrived on the planet, it had worried him. He doubted that the simplicity of his living would continue much longer.

When he caught sight of Kianna, he approached her. He recalled that she preferred to avoid the bowing and titles that most addressed her with, and so he instead simply inclined his head politely. "Good afternoon, Kianna. It's good to see you again." he said. "I was told that you have an assignment for me?"

"That I do," Kianna answered.

The marines stopped and hung back as she was met in turn by a number of LDA agents tasked with her security here on forward. A series of unmarked vehicles where present, and one of the agents opened the back door so she could get inside. She slid over enough that there was room for Echo to join her in the vehicle.

"Get in," she told Echo. "We'll talk on the way to the lab."

Echo nodded and climbed into the car. It had been a while since he'd been travelling with an LDA escort. The silent, stony-faced agents had always unnerved him.

He glanced in the mirror at the front of the vehicle at the driver's face. Well, nothing had changed there, it seemed.

A few moments later the vehicle pulled out and started on its way.

"I'm not sure if you're aware, but several months ago we came into possession of an insurgency member by the name of Sasha Matthews, now going under the alias of Val Webber," Kianna told Echo. "She has proven receptive to being swayed from her misguided cause, and has provided useful intel. Intel that I plan to act upon. However I don't trust her for this particular assignment. You I trust. I have trusted you with my life, the life of my son, and now I am entrusting you with the safety and security of this Empire. Do you understand?"

Echo inwardly gulped. This sounded like it was going to be something big. Of course, he had expected as much from an assignment coming directly from Kianna. Outwardly, he simply nodded his head. "I understand." he said, filing away the name and alias of the captured insurgency member. The terrorist activity in Illumene and across Isiria had been all over the news for as long as Echo had been on the planet. Though he'd never had a direct encounter with them, he'd witnessed first-hand an explosion just a few blocks away from the labs where he worked. "What is the assignment?"

"I want you to infiltrate the insurgency," Kianna explained. "After we're through at the lab, we're meeting with Val so that she can begin preparing you. You'll have two weeks to learn everything there is to know about this woman. The way she talks, the way she moves. What she likes, her favorite foods, songs. Where she's from, childhood friends. I don't want you to simply look like Val Webber. I want you to be Val Webber. This isn't like any assignment I've given you before, and it will be a true test of your mimicry."

Echo processed Kianna's words for a moment once she was done speaking. Whilst he would undoubtedly be able to perfectly recreate the woman's body, it would be the first time he'd employed his mimicry to try and pass convincingly for another person in conversation with those they were familiar with. That would be difficult... but to a certain extent, he found the prospect very interesting.

To learn enough about someone that you could become them? That level of understanding of (for lack of a better word) 'normal' people was something he'd wanted to have for a long time.

He nodded to Kianna, "I can do it." he stated, without a trace of cockiness to his tone. He'd evaluated the task and judged it within his capabilities. "To what end am I infiltrating the insurgents? Information, or something more specific?" he inquired.

"We need to take out the heads of these insurgencies," Kianna explained. "For that we need information. We need to know who they are, and we need to know their movements. This group Val is with is a small scale operation, scarcely on our radar. But it will serve as a spring board to get you in, and to start building contacts."

Once more, Echo nodded. "As you say." he said. He was slightly nervous about the prospect of being entrenched in such a potentially hostile environment, but he was confident that he could pull it off. Still, he'd been right - the simple life of the last few months was well and truly over.
