There were several things wrong with the sight of Edan Cephas entering Gambit's Bar. The first and most obvious was that he was wanted by the SIB and yet just thought to walk into an entirely too public place. Secondly, the man still wore his SIB badge and his holster complete with SIB regulation pistol.

One of the most worrying aspects of Edan's entrance, however, was the haunted look on his face and the fact that he was chattering away on his mobile phone.

"No, please, just listen to me -- will you stop trying to track the fucking line, Retna!"

And then the call ended, just as Edan sat down and buried his head in his arms.

Edan Cephas dragged his hands down his lined face, mobile abandoned on the table in front of him.

"Fuck." It'd been a month. A month of hiding from his old team, a month of tracking the real murderers and a month of wishing his bloody protégé would display that famous loyalty and just trust him for long enough to meet him for ten mother-fucking minutes.

Edan lifted his head and turned his attention to the others in the bar. Clearly none of them knew who he was, which was unsurprising; the SIB had covered up the murders so quickly that Edan was always going to be the only suspect. That, as Ro had screamed during a message on his answering machine, was why he had been such a good agent -- his foresight into situations.

Edan Cephas immediately threw out his hand to retrieve the mobile sitting on the centre of the table upon Bast's approach, the small piece of technology quickly tucked into an inside pocket of his suit jacket. "There's nothing that you need to know," the (ex) Special Agent stated, jaw clenched. This was the last thing he needed: another person to get involved in this case and end up dead like the last three witnesses and that poor woman he'd walked into last week.

It was only a matter of time before Ro ended up dead along with her team. Edan's gut clenched at the thought, and he quietly shook it out of his head.

"There's nothing I can answer."

"You can sit wherever the hell you like," Edan replied, head tilted so that his chin was hoisted up, a determined, prideless look on his face. "And I'm not at liberty to hand out any information and, if you'd any idea, you'd not want to hear any of my information."

The last thing he needed was another dead body turning up against his name.

Edan Cephas merely leant back and placed a quizzical look on his face. "What's that supposed to mean? I'm not here to listen to a sob story from some jumped up teenager, okay? If it were that bad, you wouldn't want to talk about it to a complete bloody stranger," the irate Scotsman stated.

"You don't know what you're trying to get yourself into here."

"I'll stop treating you like a child when you stop trying to insert yourself into my business like a child." If Edan was remotely surprised by the fact that she recognised that he was an ex-SIB agent, he did not show it at all.

"If you know what you're getting into, then you can stop. Just get up and walk away. It's not your place."

Edan Cephas snorted, leaning forward on the table with a considerable thump of his hand against the surface. "You don't understand how much you are going to fuck up what I'm trying to do if you take your bony arse and insert it into my business, okay?"

The SIB agent stood himself upright at that point, mobile phone once again extracted and pressed against his ear after just one number was dialled.

"Retna, please don't -- for fuck's sake, girl, I can here you telling Isaacs to run a fucking trace!"

And, once again, the call was ended and the mobile returned to its pocket.

"Fuck!"

Edan Cephas turned eyes that were just as haunted as he was on the supposed Egyptian Goddess. "I know exactly who to get in contact with, it is she that will not listen to me! I know how to solve this problem!"

The 'arrogant Scottish arse' returned himself to his seat, chest heaving with repressed anger and, even if he wouldn't admit it, upset breath. "You cannot help by waving a magic wand, woman."

"Don't you think I did that to begin with?" the SIB agent asked. "Don't you think I started off sobbing into my phone like a child? That I tried to get her to just meet me for ten bloody minutes, I fucking begged her to come and see me. And she ignored me, this is all I can do now! I've used every distress word in the dictionary and she still won't come out to see me!"

Not quite true, there was just one distress word left that he knew he could use to get Ro out of the office and into a meeting place, but... well, the only problem was that it was the distress word for when an agent had been shot and required immediate medical assistance. If Ro turned up expecting a near-death Cephas, there was no guarantee that she wouldn't make sure he needed a body bag by the end of the meeting.

"The only person who can help me is ignoring me. Fact," Cephas spat.

It may have looked like the two agents that walked into the bar were good friends, perhaps even more than that, but what wasn't quite so obvious to the casual eye was that the taller of the two, Edan Cephas, had carefully placed his arm across Romanae Retna's shoulders in such a way that it seemed like a friendly embrace when he was really preventing the woman from moving further than three inches from his side.

"You have to listen to me," he informed her lowly, a thin strain of emotion giving away the fact that he was begging.

"Why should I? For all you know, I could've told Isaacs to track my line before I left to meet you."

"Don't, Ro," Edan pleaded, carefully turning so that he was facing Romanae but still within the distance by which he could reach her. "I need your help."

"You need a lawyer."

"Romanae. I didn't do it."

"Then bring me proof."

During the entirety of this harried conversation, Edan had taken note of the General at the bar along with the loner nearby, and was stubbornly doing his best to avoid looking like he wasn't desperate for the woman in front of him to listen to him.

Edan, understandably, had no proof. Other than the fact that he had been driving home during the time frame of the actual murder.

"Romanae, I can't..."

"Your gun was on the body, your fingerprints were on the barrel and the grip!" Ro growled in return to Edan's weak statement. "Jonathon had been redressed. You redressed him in his bloody uniform. You are the one who always wanted to die in uniform!"

"Listen to me," Edan countered, dragging Ro a step closer. "I. Didn't. Kill. My. Family." Each word was pushed out as if it pained him to even think the words, but there they were. Raw, true and feral. "I don't know who did, but I need you to believe me."

"Let me go, Edan. Let me go, and then get the hell out of here, okay?" The look of surprise on Edan's face would've been comical at any other time. "I'll push the case for more suspects, okay? I'll redo all the evidence. You need to stay away from me until then."

The older man considered this for mere seconds, dropped a kiss on the shorter woman's head and then simply left with only a few parting words. "That's for DNA testing, Retna, not because I'm getting soft."

And then the door was closed behind him, and Ro finally turned to notice Kroger and the other in the bar. She rubbed at her wrists, noting the bruises starting to bloom there, but other than tugging her shirt sleeves down to cover the purpled skin, she did nothing but make her way to the counter, mobile out in her hand.

Edan Cephas looked thoroughly shocked by what his companion was now saying.

Stitches? There? He should have known that!

"Romanae, put the gun away!" he called, trying to figure out how exactly she could possibly have taken it when she looked the human equivalent of a beached whale.

"Shut up, arsehole!" Romanae called back, scowling over her shoulder at Edan before returning a smile to Grape. "Oh, no, not necessarily just one... Maybe nine, I don't know, I haven't decided yet... I'm quite alright. I have a gun and my baby's Daddy is over there. And I had some tea. Good fun."

"Ro... Come on... Creepy will be waiting by now and she'll be creeping the kids out."

"Will you shut up, Edan? Jesus!" Romanae rolled her eyes and jerked her thumb over her shoulder at her husband. "He's an idiot. Don't ever get married. Just live your life as an old maid, 'kay? And no, I can't decide. Don't be stupid. But I'm not giving birth to ten children, the other one can just stay there. And not every person has a twin. Edan doesn't have a twin. You don't have a twin, do you, baby?"

"Nope." Edan had picked up the two cups and wandered over to Romanae's side by this point, and towered a good six or so inches above her.

"I do have a twin. She's a bit weird. Different."

"That's one word..."

"I resent you calling me an idiot."

"I resent you knocking me up, but hey, look at that! Pregnant as fuck!"

"No need to get snippy," Edan stated, draping an arm easily around Romanae's shoulders - until it was shrugged off with a tut, that is.

"Now, you listen here, right," Romanae started, leaning over (or trying to) towards Grape. "Don't get married. Don't get pregnant, don't have sex, don't even think about kissing boys. They're all bad news, every single one of 'em. Apart from the gays, they're not interested in your panties, you know what I mean?"

"Great idea! Haven't heard a better one all day!" Edan cooed, linking arms with Romanae and none to subtly attempting to drag the firecracker of a woman towards the doorway.

"But I haven't even got to the part about her dreams being a facsimile of a sham and how that guy over there probably only kissed her to make her shut the hell up!" Romanae whinged, gesturing towards Grape with Edan's handgun. "I'm bored at work, Edan, come on! Socialising is good for me!"

Edan Cephas grimaced. This was going the wrong way. His wife was meant to be quiet and all romantically impressed by his taking her out of the office for tea. "Romanae." The man had paused their walking in order to stand in front of the woman and stoop to her level. "How about you and I go back to the office and I claim that the air-conditioning in MTAC is giving you a headache and it's too warm in the bullpen, hm? You could sit in Mordecai's office and irritate him all day. Fun?"

Romanae's answering smile and lowering of the weapon was answer enough, and Edan carefully took the gun from her lax fingers. Resuming their walking, arm in arm, Romanae couldn't help but give one last parting shot over their shoulder.

"Two things! One: If I had wanted to shoot you, you'd be dead! Two: The gun wasn't loaded." At the second point, she elbowed her husband and stalked out of the bar in front of him. "Don't you think that I can tell the difference between a loaded and unloaded gun, you idiot? I'm an SIB Special Agent! I was in the army! I've been using firearms since I turned eighteen!"

Her voice faded with the distance. Edan was pleased. At least she was being chatty now.

The few cells around Caleb were empty, reserved as they were for SIB use in case of terrorist or multiple threat emergency. Those cells had housed suicide bombers, murderers and those who sought only to do harm to the police force of Wing City.

Yet, now, it only housed a drunk without a clue as to what he'd done. Edan Cephas, Special Agent On-Field and Team Leader, paused outside the man's cell and, with the hand not holding a thin manilla folder, he gestured to the control guard.

"Mind your fingers," he warned drily as Caleb's cell door began to slide open. "And stop complaining. Walk ahead of me, keep to the right-hand-side of the corridor and take your second left."

Edan remained silent until he had sat himself down opposite Caleb. Calmly, he placed the folder on the table before him, and raised an eyebrow at his current 'witness'.

"Are you aware of the whereabouts of your son, Cetec?" Edan asked slowly.

"According to multiple eye-witnesses, Mister Jefferson, not only did you take your child 'out with you' last night, you did so whilst incredibly inebriated," Edan stated as he ran a thumb underneath the front cover of the folder. He pulled it open and momentarily perused the small text on the sheets of paper before him. "According to one witness, you offered the child as a purchasable item. You were heard complaining about your son's screaming. The last time that the child was seen, he was wrapped in a blanket and had no other clothing bar a diaper."

Cephas raised his head to narrow his eyes minutely at Caleb.

"Would you care to explain the reasoning behind your toting an infant around in the cold, inebriated, with only a blanket as a source of warmth whilst you offered complete strangers your child for a meaningless sum of money?"

"No, no, you're quite right," Edan nodded. "Taking your baby son out to settle him is not a crime. However, selling a human being, regardless of age and what you consider ownership through patriarchy, is illegal. I might also add that you are not listed as a primary caregiver. His father you may be, but you wrongfully took the child and gave him away for a sum of money you have, as of yet, not disclosed."

The Special Agent paused and removed another piece of paper from the folder. "You are listed as father to several children in this area, all under the age of ten. As far as I am aware, none of these children live with you on a semi-permanent basis and, according to the child's uncle, this was the first time that you have even looked after this particular infant on your own. As far as the law is concerned, Mister Jefferson, you're under arrest for endangering a child's life, soliciting and engaging the sale and purchase of a human being, and the obstruction of justice as per the course of returning the wrongfully sold child to his family. At this point, I'm forced to inform you that you are within your rights to contact a lawyer. If you cannot afford a lawyer, one will be appointed to you by the state. You get one additional phone call. Any information you give us regarding the person to whom you sold the child may allow lenience in a court of law as per the Assistant District Attorney's instruction."
