With just days until the war would begin in earnest, two more individuals entered the room. The first was a slim teenaged girl with average height. She wore a plain, but stylish, cream dress with black trim, over which she wore a bulky and large grey jacket with a zipper. Magenta full tights finished the outfit along with high-quality heeled boots that were brown, with a heel that was of a respectable height. Her arms and hands, if she had any, weren't visible inside the clearly oversized sleeves of her jacket that hung at her sides. Her eyes were a murky magenta color with a trend toward pink, and her short hair was eye-catching in just how green and pale it was. She wore a deadpan, if vaguely smug, expression across her face that contrasted the atmosphere around her. At her side was a Probopass. It seemed to have a letter stuck to one of the Mini-Noses, with a Frisbee held by another and was currently suppressing its magnetic field.

The second girl, of similar age, also walked in along with the first. She was dressed in a tight getup plastered with sponsors and the names of companies. The white crop top and the black briefs she wore were styles clearly intended for cycling, though she also had black thigh-high stockings and white heeled shoes. The black heels seemed specifically designed to grip the pedals of a bike much like a boot's heel was used to grip a stirrup for a Rapidash. Her hair was a vibrant green and flowed down to the center of her back in flowy waves. She looked absolutely stunning despite her youth, and her magenta eyes also came across as similar to the other girl's eyes. She looked confused as she seemed to be in conversation with the first girl. In her hand, she also had a letter.

...which means, Eddy, that when I said I had seen the right frisbee, I saw the right frisbee. The right frisbee is the correct frisbee because it is the right frisbee. It's not the left frisbee. I wouldn't leave a frisbee behind, and neither would you. So it can't be the left frisbee, because we clearly didn't leave a frisbee behind.

But we found the frisbee on the left side of the road.

Nopass! Pass?

Correct, Probopass. It wasn't the left side of the road since you can't leave a side of the road behind. You either leave the road or you don't. You can't leave parts of it, so the frisbee couldn't have been left there, which means it wasn't left behind. That means it can't be the left frisbee, which means it has to be the right frisbee, which as I said, was the right one because it's the right frisbee.

Pass-pass! Pro!

See? Even Probopass knows. It makes perfect sense. We must be twins, Probopass.

But we found it on the left-oh, hello everyone! This might be my first time meeting most of you! My name is Edelweiss Louvre Desmarais, and I am the latest Champion of Hoenn! If my name is difficult for you, just call me, "Eddy." It is so nice to meet all of you. I hope to live up to the fierce reputation that Steven cultivated before he decided to move on.

After her introduction, Eddy looked to Rachel. Rachel shrugged.

I'm Rachel Lacroix, and this is Probopass. Most of you know me already. Kalos Champion. I won't shake hands with any of you if we haven't met, or even if we have, but we at least now know who I am and we here are. Not that shaking hands are good. Hands shouldn't be shaking. That means you're nervous and have a problem I can't be speaking about with you here!

Her deadpan smile made everything more awkward. The Probopass seemed pleased, however.
Propass! Pass!

"Hey there. Name's James Pentil. James is fine. This here is my partner, Shirona."

James half-extended a hand in Shirona's direction as he said her name. She gave a small curtsy before speaking her piece aloud.

"It is a pleasure to meet the both of you. Especially Miss Desmarais. I really like a lot of your music!"

"Hey, Eddy, how long have you been the Hoenn champ? While I've been to the region, I was only there for a day or two to check out some vacay spots. I don't think I've heard your name before."

"Of course you wouldn't know her name, James. She is a rather famous idol. I see her a lot on some magazine covers. You have little interest in that stuff."

"That so? Well, that's certainly an interesting combination of talents. Well, it's nice to see you two come out for this. We could use the extra ideas you to can bring about."

Not terribly far behind the two ladies, a third individual entered the room. This person had a more plain and rugged look about him. He wore a white windbreaker with blue stripes on the sleeves and a white T-shirt underneath. His jeans were a faded blue and his sneakers were white, clean, and unscuffed. His bright white hair was wavy and pulled to the left of his pasty face. His eyes shone brilliantly, a crystal blue that seemed to sparkle. He had a kind and gentle smile on his face as he examined the room, taking in the four occupants. On his back, peering out from behind his head was a Squirtle, who was also taking in the room nervously. The boy took notice and looked up at his friend.

"Hehey, what's wrong, buddy?" he asked, nudging him a little, "You're usually not the shy one."

The Squirtle pointed towards the four elite trainers in the room. "Squir!" he protested.

"They're allies," he reassured him, "They're not like that mean man that popped in and gave us the letter. They're just like you and me...Champions."

While he felt a little bit better saying that out loud, a part of him was just as nervous as his best friend was. Sure, he could carry his own weight in comparison to them, but they were still acting Champions...trainers in their prime, all with incredulous feats of their own to obtain the positions they had. Not to mention he was definitely the youngest in the room and probably held his position the least amount of time. And he was about to meet all of them for the first time.

He figured he'd do better starting things off and introducing himself rather than being prompted, so he went for it. "Morning!" he said, chipper as ever, "I'm Winter Sakkio, the Indigo League Champ! I figure we're all here for the same reason?"

He stuck a hand in his windbreaker pocket and when he pulled it out, there was a letter in his grasp. From a surface standpoint, it looked similar to that of Rachel's and Eddy's envelopes, further proving his point.

"And this is Lucky," he added, pointing at the Squirtle climbing onto his head. The Squirtle smiled hesitantly and politely, giving a friendly wave to the others in the room.

"I'd like to correct your statement there. I'm not a Champion. I didn't take the title. You don't take what you don't earn. Anyway, so you're Winter? Heard a lot about you. Being the Champ for two regions must be rough. Name's James by the way. And hey there, Lucky! No need to be frightened, nobody here bites."

"My name is Shirona. It is a pleasure. And greetings, Lucky. If you have feelings of anxiety due to fear, I can tell you the people present won't hurt you or Winter. So please, be more at ease."

The blue Gardevoir smiled at the Squirtle as she spoke to it, hoping it would ease up a little.

"All right. Cynthia called ahead to tell me that she was taking a challenger, so let's just start the meeting now. As some of you are aware, there's a Shadow Mega Diancie by the name of Melaine going around." At this, Touko queued up some of the files Rachel had shown her for the rest of the class to ponder over. "These files, provided to us by a SAM employee on condition of anonymity, prove that Orre's Lovrina had a hand in her creation, along with the late Dr. Nendal Lacroix. From personal experience, we do not yet know the extent of her powers. It takes attacks of extraordinary power that are also effective against her rock and fairy typing to even leave a scratch, and to do more damage than she passively heals is yet another great hurdle. I'm sure you've all seen me prove that. Therefore, as much as it pains me to say it, none of us have the power to take her head on. We have to find out what's juicing her up. More troubling still, she seems to be recruiting Trainers to her cause in preparation for all out war on the United Pokémon League, even going so far as to name four extraordinarily strong personal guardians. Whether this is out of sheer practicality or out of mocking us, I can't say."

Touko looked around the room as hard copies were distributed. "Anyone have anything to add? One thing I can tell you now, we are NOT about to just give up. We have the numbers and the brains to come up with an answer for anything they throw at us. We proved it in Kalos three millennia ago. We proved it in the war with the Ranger Nation. And we're going to prove it again here."

Rachel stared blankly at the document that was distributed to her. With a deadpan smile, she looked aside and nodded.
I don't think we have anything to add. This isn't a math class. I don't think you're a teacher either. For math. If you are, then you're a lousy teacher, Touko. These sheets don't have addition expressions on them.

Pass! Pass!

She seemed to miss most of Touko's more rousing parts of her speech. Eddy didn't.
Are you certain we can't just fight her? As a group, it might be possible.

"That's what I figured as well, Eddy, when I watched her fight. It would seem a regular one on one would be a death wish, so to speak. Teaming up on her might do the trick. However, that declaration worries me. You people will likely have to stay in your region as it says she'll move to conquer all of them at what is assumed the same time. The guy we confiscated this information from told us about certain files and locations. However, if everybody is stuck in place, investigations won't proceed. My suggestion is that if anybody has connections to exceptional trainers, send them off in your stead if you cannot make it."

"James and I will stay in Unova and help out there. In Log 15 there supposedly exists details about multiple locations. We will handle the ones in Unova."

"And I can get a hold of Dawn and drop her some info on locations if any appear in Sinnoh. I'll also send her a warning about the situation as well. Sandra, a friend of mine, will get similar info to assist in Alola! Well, if I am permitted to give this information away, that is."

"Another thing was that we were told that while every log is important, number six, eighteen and forty-four are most important. So I would ask that everybody would please read those thoroughly. Like Miss Emiko said, the goal here is not to give up!"

James began to throw some thoughts around. Perhaps he could find and inform Crimson of this too? What was it that he said to do? Show something to a Pelipper? He'll ask Shirona later, she'll know. It would be a big help if he could gather some wilds to assist the cause. Or maybe he knows a couple good trainers? Whatever. First things first, get the info and then go from there.

As the room started to devolve into a flurry of suggestions and accusations, Touko was just about to punch somebody when Cynthia arrived fashionably late.

"Sorry for the wait, I was getting my...invitation." As the oldest of the Champions, she certainly knew how to work a room, and definitely commanded the respect of the Brains with a single dramatic swish of her fur-trimmed long coat. All the young brunette could do was slam the table in frustration.

"Touko. Cool it. I heard everything. Your friend is correct. We need to reach out to as many strong Trainers as we can and bring them to our side. I already floated the idea of Dawn being a special agent and she refused me, but maybe if she heard it from a friend and not a superior...yes, then it might work. But we must make ourselves visible and lead from the front if we're going to have any hope of stopping this. Also don't forget that one of your Shitennou is here," Cynthia added, gesturing to Caitlin and her valet Darach.

Then Cynthia did something most unusual...she made a point of turning to James. "I remember you. I had our battle in the bag when you resorted to the one tactic you had left. You are not only strong, but resourceful, kind, and brave. If you put your mind to it, you could be a very effective leader in your own right. Let Thorton and the eggheads come up with the plans. Just like a battle is won by Pokémon, a war is won by the efforts of the soldiers who seize their objectives...but they need a strong and capable hand to guide them. Miss Touko, if you could go over the plans you seized from the facility one more time? I might also have a few ideas for propaganda campaigns for TV and print. This is where your people might come in handy, Eddy."

At this point, Touko had regained self-control. "Right. Let's go over this one more time. These notes confirm that Lovrina is still on the loose and no doubt worked closely with Nendal in creating Melaine." A few pages had her signature pink cursive all over it when she put them up on the projection screen. "Therefore, we must make the Orre representative aware of this delicate situation in addition to mobilizing our forces." A few more clicks forward. "Here we see notes into exactly how Melaine was created by forcing Carbink to mutate. Thorton, this is the province of eggheads like you, but I advise keeping a barf bag handy. However, Lovrina may have also given us the key to undoing this. She notes the existence of a process called purification that can re-open a Pokémon's heart, as well as notes on the ecology of Diancie. The upshot is that we need to be looking for what are called Shadow Obelisks. These are what are juicing Melaine up to the levels such that she wiped the floor with me twice. No doubt these will be heavily defended. But if we can break through her troops and destroy these things, we can weaken her enough that she can finally be defeated head-on."

"Shirona, you got all that?"

"I do. I'll retell it later so you can have a copy for your own in the bag."

"Thanks. And by the way..."

James would turn to face Cynthia.

"Pokemon do not win the battle on their own. The hearts of them and their trainer are entwined, one cannot do without the other. Battle is won by teamwork, not solitude, Cynthia. You of all people should know that. And for all intents and purposes, Cynthia, you won that fight. You outclassed me. I only won because of a lucky break. As for getting her to be an agent... I don't think she'll take that, even from me. What she will take is me telling her where to be and what to do in this case. From there it's up to her discretion."

" Same with Sandra. She would likely not take to working under somebody and would rather be on her own."

"Quite. And while I'm on that subject... Everyone here has titles and seats of power. I'm just some random Joe off the street. So I feel like I gotta ask permission to share this info with Dawn and Sandra. So, can I?"

Despite literally being in a room with the strongest trainers around, James didn't really lose any composure. Taking a page from Sandra's book, he's seeing them more as people than titles. It kind of helps with the shock of it all, normalizing everybody.

"James..."

The voice of Winter cut into the meeting for the first time, having been silent while everyone talked around him. He had his copy of the folder open on the table, indicating that he had been reading the document inside the entire time. His blue gaze was piercing, but his smile was small and genuine.

"You don't need to ask for permission on this kind of stuff. You're here and you're helping. That's the only thing that matters right now. If you believe that this Dawn and Sandra need to know this information, then they need to know. Simple as that."

He then looked down at the folder, pointing to one of the passages in there, "So from what I'm gathering, these Obelisks are pretty big and probably very easy to find. The issue is strength and durability, but that won't matter if we bring enough firepower to each one. At the very least, it sounds like it'd be easier fighting these things than Melaine. The question is more where would they be and where should we begin looking?" He paused a moment to think, his finger hovering over the picture of the giant purple rock. He tapped the page as an epiphany came to him.

"We only have a few days, right? So if we send a message to every news outlet and every form of media to every person on Ruula telling them to keep an eye out for these Obelisks...we'd probably find them in no time. And from there, we gather the strongest trainers we can find and bulldoze these things. If enough are destroyed before she starts her invasion, we could bring her down to a manageable level and then try and take her down. Together." He concluded his thought, looking up at everybody in the room.

"So...thoughts?"

"Winter's right. James, me inviting you here means you're the equal of any of us," Touko added. "Just...be very careful about this information being overheard and getting into the wrong hands. Speaking of getting stuff to the news, I think Eddy's connections in the industry will be very influential in that regard. Rachel, if you could get us some time in the PR Studio to make some PSAs? We need some proper commercial spots to really do this right, though, and that's going to involve some money."

Cynthia wanted to talk about something else, though. "Before we do that, I think we have a bigger problem. When Melaine sets out to invade, where will she land, and how will we ride out to meet her? Winter, I think your Lieutenant Surge had a brilliant stratagem once involving massive use of the move Soak and then blasting the enemy with his signature high voltage assault. Once this meeting is dismissed, I want you all to look for seaports in your home regions and brace them against a potential invading force. Make sure to control the skies as well, and let's get to work breeding strong Chinchou that can make unique use of this water and electricity combination."

Eddy shook her head.
It isn't that simple for me to do. My Producer and my Sponsors don't just do something because a big shot says so. They also don't really have ties to news like you think. You'll have to negotiate with them if you want anything, and they can be strict. My Producer is already somewhat cross with me for skipping a shoot to come here and address this issue, though he can't contest me on that matter. The business I'm in deals a lot with favors. I can probably work something out for us, but it won't be cheap.

Rachel shrugged.
I can't get you time in the PR Studio. There is no time in the PR Studio to get. If time was there to get, I think I'd have gotten it by now. Plus, the PR Studio is pretty well organized. If there was time to get there, it would also be easy to find. I could use the time too, after all, so, it would benefit me if I could also find time located there in the PR Studio. Besides, last I checked, PSAs didn't cost time to make anyway. They don't cost anything at all. Besides maybe your soul. Well, you can go anytime you want, since it's free to do so. I don't understand why you're asking me for permission.

Winter paused for a moment before addressing Cynthia, "I think that might work for anyone who's not a Ground-Type or a megalomaniac Diancie. Of course I'd be getting the help of the Gym Leaders and our region's Elite Four, as we all should be doing. But there's several regions to span and there's only one of her. So when she invades, that's something I feel like we're going to have to react to rather than plan out."

As the Hoenn champ concluded her roadblock, Winter couldn't help but clench his fists and close his eyes, frustration brewing on his face. A suddenly sharp gaze passed to Eddy, "Then you need to tell your producer to tell the news people that this issue is above money or views or ratings or whatever it is they care about. This is about saving lives and salvaging the future of this planet. And they need to understand that if they elect not to do anything because they won't earn enough money out of it, then they will be the reason why Ruula becomes a decrepit wasteland!"

A suddenly strong silence filled the room. Winter was now staring at the table in front of them, not even looking up at the other people around him. His chest rose and fell vigorously, but there was no labored breathing with it. It was a noiseless exhale. He felt a tug on his left pant leg and turned to find Lucky staring up at him, concern across his face.

"Squir?" You alright?

Winter's gaze immediately softened at the look his best friend had given him and a small smile had crossed his face once more. He reached out and held the Squirtle's hand, "Yeah...thanks..." he lamented, "Sorry about that..."

His tone had turned more melancholy as he finally stared at the rest of the room, "Sorry. I'm being forceful," he stated, "That won't get us anywhere. I just...if Melaine wins this...then all of this..."

He reached into his pants pocket and pulled out a few photos, slightly crumpled at the edges. He tossed them onto the table for everyone else to see. There, they could see several photos of the land withering away at the hands of the crystalline power. The grass was turning black and fragile, as if a small wind would turn it to dust. The dirt looked hard and unhealthy. Leaves on trees were an unnatural brown, almost gray, and the tree trunks were black with purple crystals growing out of them, like a fungus. There was even a picture of Castelia City, the purple storm-like clouds adding a gloomy tone to the skyscrapers. The castle stood glaringly above it all.

"That becomes our world. That becomes our future. Not just there...but everywhere."

Eddy seemed to get upset when Winter spoke about her Producer, though she waited for him to finish. She stood up quickly when he finished showing the photos.
I get it, Winter. You think I don't know that, too? But...

Eddy closed her eyes and bit her lip, placing her hands on the table.

...you don't know how my world works, Winter. I'm not just a Champion. I'm the face of Lovely Sport, the athletics-themed idol unit he oversees. He spends millions of Poke making sure we, and our Pokemon, are a household name across Ruula. He found me my sponsors when I decided to focus on bicycle racing. He's made a huge investment in me, to the point that...

A trail off. She shifted her body somewhat uncomfortably.
Well, like I said, it isn't that simple for me to do; to just go and tell him that. My sponsors will probably listen, sure, but my Producer isn't so easy to work with. He is already upset with me for skipping out on a photo shoot to come here and address this issue, as I said, and though he can't contest me on that matter, as I am the Champion for Hoenn, he...has the first say when it comes to how I interact with the media outside of my Champion duties. He works with me to a degree, but favors to each other are how he and I compromise. So, I owe him a favor for the last minute reschedule he had to pull off; to handle that, I don't envy him.

She shuddered.
I can butt heads with him all day, but in the end...

She uncomfortably struck a pose with her hands on her hips. It was the sort of pose that was practiced and provocative, performed with only glamour shoots in mind. She seemed to be using the pose to make a point.

...my profession, his profession, is based on how well he can sell me and my peers to the people of Ruula. If he can't do that, then he has to answer to the people who invested in him and his decision to take me from obscurity to stardom. If those investors pull their funding for him, then he's going to be replaced or let go, which also leaves me and a lot of my peers without work too. Just because I have Champion work and a sports career to fall back on, many of my peers are not as fortunate. He has a lot to contend with, and so I can't despise him for placing his work first, even in a situation like this. Even when it is seemingly selfish to do so. Even if it means he gets to control some parts of our lives...

Sitting back down in her seat next to Rachel, Eddy seemed dejected. Then, Rachel rested her head on Eddy's shoulder.

It's okay to be sad. Melaine makes people sad. That is why we're here to discuss how to prevent that. Because being sad is...sad. I think. Anyway, strategy. Not sadness. I don't think that Soak strategy is all that good. From what I know, eliminating Melaine's major weakness doesn't sound like a good plan. It sounds more like an evil plan. It is a plan that is malicious. It will laugh evilly at us and monologue while we flounder. We need to not flounder and not make the plans become evil so they can laugh evilly and monologue. We already have Melaine for that part of it. The evil laughs and monologues part, not the floundering part.

Shirona was looking visibly distressed. All the emotions flying around seemed to confuse her as she tried to tune herself to each one. Spying her distress, James speaks up for her.

"Hey, sis. You should maybe step outside. You're getting too worked up."

"Maybe I should, yes. Please excuse me, everyone."

The blue Gardevoir left the room and sat down on the floor outside and sighed. Why was she getting stressed out? Those weren't her emotions. Was it the amount of strong emotions?

"That might be it. Perhaps a break will do me some good..."

Back in the room, James listened to everybody that spoke; Cynthia's plan(s), Emiko's and Winter's affirmation to his question, Eddy's story and Rachel's somewhat comical reactions. What was there to make of it all? What could he add to this that could maybe ease some of the strife? Maybe a quick sum-up to show he's been paying attention and not just standing around.

"Alright. Eddy's situation is unfixable and currently unable to help us in a beneficial way. That's fine. It's not like all bets were solely on that anyway, but it was worth a shot to ask. As for the soak strategy, that would be a rather bad idea. I've watched her take a Water Spout from an untouched Jellicent. And Emiko, you saw it too... She just shrugged it off. A simple super effective move likely won't scratch her. Does she perhaps have a weakness greater than water? She does indeed. She is Fairy typed, as well as Rock. This means that Steel based moves deal a massive amount of damage to her. I'd say that's our best bet, to hit her with those if it comes to another combat session."

James would place his gaze on Winter.

"Winter, I understand your anger and worry right now. It's warranted but having a clear mind should be top priority. We need everybody thinking at their best capacity to do so, in order to make a plan."

He would look to the Hoenn Champion now.

"Eddy, mind telling us what you can do? Are you able to go on these investigations and Obelisk hunts? Do you have anybody that can go in your stead if you are not able? Even if you aren't, you can at least keep people from worrying as much. Your position in the media has a lot of people look up to you. Give them something to be happy about. Panic is the last thing that needs to spread."

With that, he turned to face Cynthia.

"Cynthia, and the rest of you Champions too... Do you happen to have lists or records of those who have fought against you? If it is possible, Thorton, would we be able to dissolve the Factory and hand those Pokemon out temporarily to those trainers in order for them to better help against this?"

With another movement, he would be facing Rachel now.

"What are some of the things that Kalos can do to assist? Are the cities going to be able to hold against an invasion? What are your plans when you return?"

James wasn't done, he would turn to face the woman who brought him here. Emiko.

"And on that thought... Emiko, what are your plans upon returning to Unova? By the time we get back, we'll have one, maybe two days to get ready. What Cynthia said about seaports sounds correct but I'd be keeping an eye on the sky as well. There is no telling what exactly she'll do. Think you can sweet-talk Skyla into using her tower to keep an eye on the skies for anything from that island we saw taking off? Any and all options we have that may potentially give us any form of coverage should be taken, or at least attempted. We know what she wants to do but not how she will do it and that puts us at a disadvantage. So the best course of action here, for everybody, would be to hope for the best but prepare for the worst. Once that's done with, and we have endured this invasion and made ourselves some breathing room... Then we can focus on striking the heart of all this. It's something of a long con, waiting for the right moment... But if anybody has a better idea, I'd love to hear it."

Thorton shook his head. "No can do. The Factory is an elaborate simulation. The level 100 Pokemon you see in there are merely extrapolations from what is known to be possible, it's not like something so strong actually exists...barring that abomination calling herself Melaine, of course. You can see it for yourself with how the Frontier challenges work. Playing with levels, handing out items, swapping teams, setting weather...this is why we are merely generals and not Champions in our own right. We oversee the endless simulations and come up with cutting-edge battle strategies from the data generated." Caitlin nodded in agreement with a loud yawn. "The egghead is correct. It is trivial to create a virtual representation of a Pokémon from data, but it is not so easy to go the other way around. Just ask the people who created Porygon."

Meanwhile, Touko just stared blankly at James when he pointed out how Melaine tanked the water spout. "I knew she had Melaine in the back, James. I was the one who ordered the fucking water spout. I knew she was coming...and yet I blame myself for not stringing her along further. Maybe I could have gotten the battle to a point where I could get a Swords Dance or two onto Excadrill and then I could have done some real damage. But that's certainly an idea. We do need eyes on the sky in case she tries that. I've pulled favors from Skyla in the past, but I swear, that woman has a sadistic streak. I still think about slamming face first into that wall sometimes. And it hurts every time."

Noting how Gardevoir was leaving the room, Cynthia took the hint. "It seems we're all getting riled up in this stuffy war room. Perhaps we should call a recess? I don't want to formally adjourn this emergency meeting until we all have a concrete strategy in place. Unless we're positive that this is the best we can do with the information so far." The inflection in her voice was daring everyone to try harder, to do better. Winter's photography drove the point home further that there was no try. There was only do or do not. "Eddy, perhaps you could let me talk to your manager regarding purchasing and producing commercials on behalf of the League? I'm told I can be very persuasive." To those sensitive to such things, Cynthia's aura started to flare up again, sending Touko scurrying under the table in fear. She hadn't seen Cynthia this mad since the first time they met.

I can do anything else, James. We just can't use my Producer's time and resources to do things without convincing him first. There's very little he prioritizes above Lovely Sport.

Eddy nodded matter of fact.
As to speaking to him, you can try. I'll send you his number, but he's pretty intense. Don't rile him up too much. I have to work with him later for a shoot.

Rachel gave James a decidedly neutral gaze, returning his own look with one that revealed nothing.

As to what Kalos can do to assist, you'll have to ask Kalos. However, I can assist by providing myself and my Pokemon. Also maybe some private personnel. I have reserves.

As for the cities, they will hold against an invasion. Not sure what they will hold exactly, since I don't think the cities and an invasion have any past history, but they will hold against an invasion. Like a Grudge. We'll use that Grudge against the invasion, whatever the Grudge is. I'll make sure the Gym Leaders see to it that the cities be prepared to hold against an invasion.

Then, for my plans, my plans will be detailed and complex when I return. Sort of like you. Only you aren't detailed or complex. Maybe you need to grow into a plan, and become detailed and complex. Then you can be like my plans will be when I return. Right now, they aren't detailed or complex. I have to return first.

She was so deadpan in delivery and so neutral in her gaze toward James that it was impressive.

James was a little confused at Rachel's way of understanding things. Unlike a pokemon, he can't just ask Shirona to translate for him. He would have to think of something himself.

"E-Er...yeah ok. As long as you can do something to help defeat these invading people, that's good enough, Rachel. Also, Emiko, I didn't mean to set you off with that memory. It's just that nobody here has seen that fight or heard of it. I figured detailing that would be a useful piece of information. If I may, I'd like to share my thoughts on that. I was talking with Shirona while watching Emiko fight against Melaine. It was when she willingly fought against Jellicent, a water type, despite the fact she carried a weakness. She had no fear over it, and it wasn't cockiness from what I could tell. Shirona and I came upon Nendal again, even after seeing his head on the side of the sidewalk in Castelia. He apparently created clones of himself. He said as much anyway, before his death, again. That made me wonder. When we checked out the stadium, reports of Melaine being called a test-tube baby came up. I think she was made specifically to ignore weakness strikes, genetically spliced and everything. She may have some custom ability or an extra typing nobody here knows about. The other thing is, she's a Shadow Pokemon. Over the course of my journey, I've only run into one or two of them. They are highly aggressive and are stronger than normal Pokemon. They also willingly strike out at trainers. This is another thing to take into account because shadow moves hit extremely hard. With that broadcast too, it would seem she has a pretty hefty control over the media, even if it is by force. I would think propaganda would be a useless tactic anyway, given the time we have."

James took a breath, finally.

"First order of business should be to keep everything safe. We need everybody's help for it. Only thing to keep in mind is that these trainers she's going to send will likely carry Shadow Pokemon themselves so caution is to be taken. Sinnoh is my home, but... Sinnoh has Dawn, and you, Cynthia. I'm sure you two can handle it. I'm going to stay in Unova and help out there. Palmer, your boy still living in Sinnoh or did he move out on some other adventure? Barry could be helpful to this too. If he's in a different region, it might be best for him to stay there and help out. Anyway, I need to check up on Shirona. I'm going to back out for a bit."

With that said, James eagerly exits the room to look for Shirona. He didn't have to look far as she was seated on the floor by the door.

"Hey sis. How you holding up? You feeling any better?"

"A bit, yes. I could hear what was said, but keeping the distance did kind of tone down the flood of emotions."

"Good. And since you heard it all, mind if I ask for any complaints or revisions?"

The Gardevoir shakes her head, "None. It is as good as anything right now. My hope is that Mi-... Mom is going to be ok."

"Still getting used to calling her that, huh? And I'm sure she'll be fine. She's capable, remember?"

"Hmmm, you are correct about that. I should not have doubted her. So, back to Unova?"

"When this is all done, yeah. That's where we're gonna station ourselves. It's the heart of this mess. The other reason I want to do this is... Him. He might be helpful."

"Allen? You cannot be serious!"

"I am. While he likely would enjoy seeing the world fall into chaos like this, he probably won't like the fact it's not him at the helm of it. I could probably work his ego to get him on our side and help. Also, mind telling me what Crimson said to do to notify him? I figured we should share this info with him too."

"He gave us a special badge. We are to show it to a Pelipper and they will relay any message to him."

"Alright. Also, I'm going to teach you about contractions. I've been noticing you aren't using them that much."

"Well, alright then. But can we do it on spare time, and not borrowed?"

"Yeah, we can. Now, think you can come back? I want you to help me with a bit of a thought process."

"What is it?"

"Locations. We know Sinnoh rather well, so I was thinking I would point a few things out."

"Why did you not do it before?"

"Because, I had to see if you were ok."

"Thanks. But what of the other regions?"

"Yeah... that's the main issue. I don't know them as well as I do Sinnoh."

With that, James would renter, with Shirona at his side. He took out a map of the Sinnoh region and put it down on the table.

"Ok. I'm back. When I left, I wanted to mention my ideas on where invasions may take place in Sinnoh. The obvious routes of attack they have will be by sea and air. Following those will be land. Through sea, that gives them the obvious choices of the beaches by Pastoria and Sandgem, and the ports in Canalave and Snowpoint. Others include sites at the northern island but that being a popular spot for trainers, I'm marking that off as it would hold too much resistance. Same with Sunyshore. Cynthia, I'm sure you're well aware of Volkner's wonderful ability to prevent people from ever reaching the league. I doubt they'd land there."

"Considering there are trainers that willingly side with Melaine, there is reason to believe some exist in Sinnoh and may relay information as we go. So keep that in mind. Same goes for other regions."

"Yeah. Now, by air, that gives them access to any city but that would make it too easy to counter them. They would pick a place easily defend-able and with limited routes to get to. That would be common sense. By air, their best choices would be Eterna Forest. It's an extremely large place so it would be easy to hide a small army inside it. As well as using that Chateau as a base. Other options are landing and getting inside Coronet. While normally it is quite open, if they take the upper half of it, only two routes exist to get to them. That's coming from Snowpoint or coming up from the base, both of which are taxing. Going back to the sea..."

James points towards an island, north of Canalave.

"Iron Island is a place that essentially combines the size of Eterna forest but in a multi-layered cave system, and the security of Coronet. You can't fly there so that already cuts off half the available resistance. It can easily hold a small army inside it and is quite easily defended as well. It also serves as a prime spot to lay siege to Canalave. Only way to the island is by boat, so if they knock out Canalave too, we're out of options."

"Well, there is the drill boats in Snowpoint."

"Yeah. They need those drills to bore through the ice. Which is why I doubt they'll ever land there. Landing by Pastoria leaves them too open. Sandgem they could storm and take but it's not the ideal fortification. They could still take it though. But, what Shirona said does give us a way into Iron Island. Even if they patrol, little is going to stand in the way of a speeding drill boat. But this limits the size of the group we can send to that island, making their job easier given a small resistance force."

"James, what about Floaroma or Celestic?"

"Wide open. But again, while they can take them, they're open as a flight zone. You can't fly directly into the forest or inside Coronet. Which is why if they go by air, I'd say they'll pick them. But those are just my thoughts on Sinnoh. As for other regions, keep an eye on islands or major ports, like Olivine in Johto or Vermilion in Kanto. As well as major cave systems that are off the beaten path like Iron Island is for Sinnoh. Those are likely locations. This doesn't mean drop defenses for the other cities though. However, I'm just spitting my thoughts. I'd love to hear you talk Thorton. You're the resident smarty pants here. No offense."

"James"

"Look, I'm sorry for saying that. But I still would like to hear your thoughts on strategy. Anybody else's too."

"Excellent strategy, James. However, we may have an unexpected ally if they choose to land in Eterna. Do you remember a couple of years ago when Gardenia was hospitalized? Turns out we have foreign operatives landing there and trying to blend in with the populace. We know they're there, but can't pin down their identities. If they get caught in the crossfire, they're a wild card that we will have to take into account. They have heavy artillery that they can bring to bear on a scale that we can't match. Currently they're holding Eterna Forest hostage, and they might be spreading to Floaroma as well."

Thorton pulled up some old documents on his datapad with a few rapid clicks, confirming Cynthia's report. "According to the latest intelligence, they call themselves Umibozu. They're Taiyou spies. I'd like them to maintain their cover, but if the action goes to that Eterna-Floaroma area, we could find ourselves having to appease another enemy. We'll need to deploy troops there to make sure that doesn't happen. Lots of industry in that area too, with the Fuego Ironworks and the Valley Windworks. That means we've decided on a plan of defense for Sinnoh, but what about the rest of the world? If I remember correctly, and I usually do, Melaine promised to invade ALL the regions."

"That's the scariest part for me," Touko chimed in. "I'm probably the one with the most experience against her forces, and I can say with certainty that they won't need very many people. One of her Elite Four, which she calls her Nonpareil, is on par with any of us Champions. We'll have to use quantity over quality...and we'll have to be ready to redeploy quickly if we guess wrong about where they show up."

"But if they hurt my boy..." Palmer's gloved hand clenched into a fist.

"We can't spare the men, Palmer. We can't guarantee any one person's safety with an operation of this scale, you know that," Cynthia was quick to correct the Tower Tycoon. "But if we're right and they hit Iron Island first, the entire region's industry is in jeopardy. We can't let them hit our infrastructure and supply lines like that. Ready your troops and head out for Canalave. Your objective is to fortify the city and the nearby islands."

Winter stayed silent throughout Eddy's explanation, but the words she said only fueled the anger inside of him. How she explained her Producer...it was off-putting...it was worrisome to the Indigo Champ. Seemingly a person who would put his business before the people around him...that didn't ring right with him. His photo shoot was more important than the fate of the planet around him? His Lovely Sport was worth more than his sponsored icon coming to the rescue and fulfilling her duties as the Hoenn Champion? Winter was even thinking about the possibilities of this Producer being one of the corrupted...it would make sore sense than him being selfish and irrational.

But he didn't speak up. Like he said, he felt like he was being too forceful. He let James handle things the passive way and allowed for the meeting around them to split off to their respective regions. As the conversations went on around him, Winter kept studying the folder in front of him, internalizing all the information presented inside. Everything he could possibly gather about Melaine, the Obelisks, the Crystals, the Sentinels, the Shadow power itself and how to potentially cure it, and anything else he deemed useful. All the while, he was formulating the strategy to approach this invasion with. He pulled out his PokeDex and made a call. After a moment, he heard feedback from the other end, accompanied with:

"This is Lance, the Dragon-type master."

"Hey, it's Winter."

"Ah! Hello Winter!" the fiery voice came through from the other end, "Have you learned anything about what to do concerning the new Grand Champion?"

"Yes and then some," his gaze passed over the file, "Hey, I need to start going over some strategy with y'all."

"Alright. What do you need?"

"First, I'd like to start setting up scouts in these cities: Lavender Town, Fuchsia City, Cinnabar Island, Viridian City, Cherrygrove City, Azalea Town, and Clanwood City."

"Hmm...that's a lot of cities."

"We have a lot of people. And they should be the very first ones to spot any kind of Shadowy stuff heading our way."

"What about Olivine?"

"The tower's too far inland," Winter reasoned, "I'm willing to bet Azalea Town and Cherrygrove will spot them first."

"That makes sense," it was like he could hear the nod in the Dragon Master's voice on the other end, "You and Lieutenant Surge must have made pre-arrangements if something like this happened."

"Not really. Anyway, we gotta find some strongholds we can truly fortify in case things go south. I'm thinking the Indigo Plateau and Blackthorn City, since it's so hard to get through those places anyway."

"Cerulean City might be a good stronghold," Lance reasoned, "It's large enough and well out of the way."

"There's a small path from the ocean that leads to Cerulean. It's got a weak spot from the north."

"Celadon City could also work. It's larger than Cerulean."

Winter nodded at the thought, "Yeah, Celadon might be alright. Talk to Misty and see if you can convince her. See if you can talk to Falkner about Violet City too."

"I don't think that's very smart. It could be a dead end. All the ways out are towards the sea."

"They could strike from land."

"Those mountains are near impassable. I'm not disagreeing with the idea, but any force they could carry over those is a small one."

Winter nodded again, "Okay, uh...Ecruteak City then."

"Both would be alright. If one falls, there's a back-up they could get to. They aren't far apart."

"Yes..." Winter curled his lip approvingly, Violet and Ecruteak then. I think that's it for now. We can talk finer details later."

"One more thing..." Lance added, "Should we try to get Titania involved?"

That's right... Winter hadn't considered the possibility of the former Champion's help, but they were going to need everybody. And looking at who she was, she'd be the perfect combatant against Melaine, given her knack for Steel-Types. If anyone stood a solo chance against the current Queen, the Iron Maiden would be it.

"Well, if Touko doesn't reach out to her first, I will."

"Good," Lance sounded resolute with the answer, "We'll talk later."

The call disconnected and Winter gazed around the room to see where everyone was at. James and Shirona had left the room, probably James looking out for his companion, he reckoned. Cynthia, Touko, and their plus ones were all gathered around, going over their regional options. Rachel and Eddy were both standing nearby, closer to each other than they were to the rest of the room. Something clicked in his mind just then as he started doing a head count of the Champions he knew about. Him, Eddy, Cynthia, Touko, Rachel, and...

"Hey, wait," he blurted out, "Isn't there supposed to be one more? The Alola Region got a Champion now, right? Lukas, I think. Where's he?"

Missing as far as I know. Like my arms. Or Titania's ambition.

Rachel looked aside in a deadpan fashion. No expression crossed her face despite her remark, even as Eddy looked rather astonished at the audacity of it.

See, my father spent time in Alola undertaking research. He heard something big went down involving Lukas and a Dragonite. After that event, Lukas vanished from the public eye. That was all he ever told me and my sisters, however, so the information is probably incomplete. My father told us, that is, not Lukas. Lukas didn't tell me, since he is missing.

"I heard similar rumours when I asked Sandra about the current champ. I dismissed them as just that, though. I figured he just stepped down and let his friend take over while he went on some personal journey. Hau's the champ. To be honest, I don't know him or Lukas, but I know they were friends from what the locals said about them when I questioned Sandra's credibility. Still... something must be holding him up. Either that or he's lost. Equally possible. I don't think she sent an advance force to Alola. Melaine doesn't seem like the sneaky type. So it's probably ot much time worry about. From what I hear too, he's still a kid so he may just have elected to not come and try to play hero and take it upon himself to defend Alola with the Kahunas."

James sighed. He wasn't fully sure what the next steps were going to be when they get back to Unova. Winter has his, no need to worry about Cynthia, Eddy says she'll try something, Rachel is probably fine. Hau is MIA so no comment on him, but he is a champ. Even if he is a kid still, he's capable. That leaves Emiko. What are her plans? Her region is the heart of this crap.

"Emiko, what of you? Ideas for Unova?"

Touko suddenly stopped as she put two and two together. "Wait. You're telling me Lukas isn't here because of some asshole Dragonite, and for all intents and purposes he's DEAD? Shit, I met him in Alola, he was a good kid. Winter, if you know what happened to Titania, I think it would be best if you told the rest of the class."

"Buddy. Do I ever have ideas. The storm front that surrounds her home base is visible from Castelia's ports. We'll be the first to know when she starts shipping out troops. I've heard it's possible for a skilled pilot to navigate storms like that to see what's inside, but I really don't want to ask Skyla for another favor after last time. And regarding Titania's ambition...I've battled her. In Alola. That's simply not true. She's still as strong as ever, but there's some chinks in that legendary iron will of hers. Also she's friends with a talking Zoroark, so that's a thing. Made me spar with him."

Touko rubbed her shoulder, remembering the pain. "Maybe she just wants to settle down and retire, start a new chapter in her life. Nothing wrong with that, however unfortunate the timing is for us. If anyone would know why she stepped down as Champion, it would be one of her successors: Winter or Lance. And get your own copy, James, you're literally breathing down my neck." Touko even went so far as to wave James away, the bombshell about Lukas's absence barely registering on her radar compared to the wealth of information flooding her brain regarding the intelligence briefing before her.

Cynthia rubbed her temples, taking in the news that Lukas was MIA due to an incident involving a Dragonite. "That's okay...I didn't expect all of us to make it. We are all very busy, after all...I wish him and his family the best. But between Titania and Hau, plus given the archipelago nature of Alola and the active role of the Tapu as of late, I wouldn't worry about that place too much. Let's focus on our responsibilities."

Hearing Touko, Rachel spoke.

Winter can't tell the rest of the class. He's not a teacher, and this isn't a class. Where are you right now, Touko? You must be lost in your head. Since you wanted us to do math earlier, I'm certain you must be doing it. The math, that is.

She shook her head and flashed Touko a wry, deadpan smile that was just smug enough to be almost insulting.

Remember, Touko, Champions don't do drugs. Save yourself before it is too late and all hope is lost. You might become a plus or minus then, like a Plusle or Minun. Then you wouldn't be Touko anymore. That would be sad. It'd make me sad.

She was matter of fact and held a straight tone with her aside. Eddy started giggling at it all.
