Description

ImageName: Elaina Ballifrey
Age: 28
Race: Human
Profession: Helicopter Pilot (ex-battlemage teacher)

Character Outline: Pleasant and friendly, if with something of a temper and a hint of know-it-all-ism, Elaina is overall a nice young woman. Though dedicated to her position in the armed forces, she also has significant ties to Terra. Her past relationship with the mage Kastner and her years spent teaching at Academia Everia have her considering it something of a second home. As such, when Sanctuary, the international organisation for the regulation and control of magic needed personnel for an investigation of unusual magical energies on Terra, she was the first to volunteer. She has little tolerance for idiocy that endangers lives, but equally will go out of her way to keep people who have no idea what they're doing alive, even if it means taking risks that she wouldn't normally have to.

Elaina was born in the USA, moving to Terra later in life when her magical abilities came to light and her parents sought out the best schools for it. Her attraction to the idea of the military led her to choose Everia, a school for combat magic. While she was there, she fell for an older mage named Kastner - who was fired from the school staff due to experimentation with forbidden magic. Her relationship with him led to her staying on after graduation to teach as opposed to returning to the USA as intended, however, when she was 25 the two went their separate ways. This prompted her to return home and pursue her military career, becoming a pilot after a year and a half of training. She frequently took part in Sanctuary missions due to her magical background and has been a valuable field asset - training as a medic in her second year to complement her supportive capabilities as a mage despite a ban on the use of offensive magic in military engagements.

Elaina Ballifrey shoved her way into the bar angrily, and grumped her way over the floor with forceful steps. Her expression was grim, and her eyes raging. "Damn pupils." she muttered. "They have no appreciation for being taught. I could be doing so much better things than teaching, and how do they thank me? A bucket of fucking water."

The woman took an angry seat at the bar, adjusting her robes. "Get me a damn beer."

Elaina Ballifrey glanced sideways at Lanora. "What are you murmuring about to yourself?" she asked, raising an eyebrow. "You had a bad day too, eh? I hate teenagers. Especially teenagers that can use magic. Bucket of water. Bloody bastards. I looked like a drowned rat all day..." she continued to mutter.

"Anyway. Yeah, you look and sound like a misery, dear."

Elaina Ballifrey blinked. "My pains? How do you mean?" she asked, bewildered. "I'm not pained, just bloody miffed. More angry than sad. Stompy rather than weepy."

The mage shrugged "You get the picture."

Elaina Ballifrey shrugged "Irritation seems to be the large part of it." she replied, nodding in thanks to the bartender as her drink arrived. "But I suppose apart from that, I'm alright. Certainly no soul crushing bad news coming my way, that I know of." she added, smiling faintly "I'll be able to smirk smugly at some of my more detestable students soon, as the exams are fast approaching." she said with some glee.

"And yourself?"

Elaina Ballifrey raised an eyebrow. "Huh. Well, each to their own, I guess." the woman said, taking a sip of beer. "Not done anything interesting at all on your own, even if you haven't been around others?" she asked, determined to extract something noteworthy from this woman.

Elaina Ballifrey "Hoe, is it? Never heard of the place." Elaina replied. "And I took Geography. Well, when I say geography, we didn't really learn where anything was. We more learnt what rocks were made of, or why trees looked the way they did. So I guess it's reasonably to think I wouldn't know."

The mage glanced at her watch, and grimaced "Eugh, I should go. I'll be dead on Monday if I stay out much later. Sorry dear."

Elaina Ballifrey [color=purple], in the centre of the cadre of battlemages, yelled out commands with angry vigour. "To your left, Daryl! Edgar, Janet, direct fire to those fuckers shooting flames at us!" she called, waving her staff-like polearm around her head, sending a cascade of pure arcane energy spraying towards one of the Aeryun's, shocking it and knocking it back from one of her companions.

The thing was not fettered, though, and launched itself back at her, attention diverted from her fellow. Elaina cursed, bringing the polearm down to intercept a blow, gasping at the thing's strength, but feeling no pain - thanks to an illusion of fortitude she had laid upon herself, convincing her nerves that she felt no pain. As the thing reeled back from the block, Elaina took her chance, and charging the polearm with arcane power, slammed it down into the thing's skull, half-decapitating it and sending it to the floor, dead.

"Keep fighting! Don't let up!" she yelled, turning to lend her aid elsewhere. The battle was far from over...[/

Elaina Ballifrey entered the bar with relative calm (compared to her usual loud entrances), evidence that for once, Elaina had come to the bar when she was not in a bad mood. Indeed, the teacher seemed positively cheery as she made her way through the room, weaving through the crowds. Approaching the counter, Elaina leaned onto it and waved the bartender over with a smile.

"I'll have a coffee, please, a strong one." she requested politely, turning her head towards the nearby Vega, nodding politely in passive greeting as she waited for her drink.

Elaina Ballifrey smiled faintly, raising an eyebrow at the woman's frown. The teacher offered a little wave, before gesturing to indicate that she could tell that the woman wasn't particularly interested in speaking with her, and that Elaina wouldn't press the issue. When her coffee arrived, Elaina nodded her thanks, before taking a seat on one of the stools and sipping from it.

The young woman produced a newspaper from her bag, and began to flick through it, pausing to take out a pen and begin working on the crossword.

Elaina Ballifrey clicked her tongue and frowned, pondering over a particularly obscure clue. 'Not standard, lacking continuity, not following a usual procedure or pattern' - nine letters long with an L as the third to last.

The teacher tapped her pen against her chin, racking her brains for an answer. "Hmm..."

Elaina Ballifrey blinked down at Silvester slowly, somewhat taken aback at being approached by a talking, skinny dog wearing clothes and glasses. It was plain she didn't spend a lot of time in the bar.

"Ah... nope. All fine here." she said, trying not to stare. "Just uh, doing the crossword."

Elaina Ballifrey gazed after Silvester briefly, before deciding it was healthy just to ignore him. Turning back to her crossword, Elaina began trying to figure out what a 'demanding request - but not for shorts', was.

Elaina Ballifrey glanced up at Silvester again with a suppressed sigh. "You were offering to help me with the crossword. You wouldn't by any chance know what a 'demanding request - but not for shorts', would be, would you?" she asked, not really holding out any hope that the dog would know the answer. It was a dog, after all, right?

Elaina Ballifrey raised an eyebrow. "Surprising as this may be, I don't carry a dictionary around with me." she pointed out, before going back to staring at the clue, in case it decided to suddenly become more informative.

Elaina Ballifrey glanced at Silvester again. "It's a crossword, for entertainment. The idea is you figure out all the words, and write them in. It's both entertaining and helps keep your brain in shape - supposedly."

Elaina Ballifrey raised an eyebrow. "Thanks but no thanks. That's not a great tactic." she pointed out, before looking up as Jair approached. The woman returned the smile and nod, before indicating the open newspaper before her.

"Not a riddle, a crossword." she began, before yet another person approached, inspiring Elaina to raise her eyebrow once again.

Who knew that a crossword could attract so much attention in a city where shooting fireballs out of your ass was a common feat?

Elaina Ballifrey nodded, "A demanding request - but not for shorts." she repeated. Ironically enough, she would probably have figured it ut by now if not for this onrush of help. "Two words, four letters and five letters."

Elaina Ballifrey frowned as Silvester levitated her newspaper away, and in short order brought out her wand and damn well levitated it back. "The answer would be 'no', and there is no point asking if you intend to take it anyway." the woman noted.

Elaina Ballifrey barely resisted rolling her eyes and sighing in exasperation. "No, I have a wand, and the ability to channel magic. I don't have 'your' powers." she stated. This attention was becoming annoying.

"A tall order." she repeated back to herself, satisfied.

Elaina Ballifrey gestured to what was the final clue in the crossword. "This one has been plaguing me all day." she noted. "Two words, seven letters and four letters, first letter being a G, third an R and the second letter of the second word being an N. A difficult problem to be solved."

The mage leant backwards, once again tapping her pen against her chin thoughtfully.

Elaina Ballifrey barely even looked at Silvester, simply saying "Nooo." with a level and bland tone. The dalmatian had proven himself below Elaina's tolerance level for intellect, which was rather high, admittedly.

"Hmmm. A difficult problem to be solved. This damn word is describing itself."
