Elizabeth McCarthy

Former Citizen and Teacher of Rapture and 'Big Sister'

0 · 1,868 views · located in Canti's Diner

a character in “The Multiverse”, as played by Rulke

Description

Name: Elizabeth McCarthy

Age: 27

Occupation: WCPD Cop

Partner: Jenna Crespo

Appearance in Armour:

Appearance out of Armour:

Personality:
Elizabeth was an aristocrat in Rapture and actively taught in one of the primary schools, she was well-liked if at times considered little harsh. Although outside of this she was addicted to plasmids. Her fate may have been different if it was not for being noticed and chosen for the Big Sister project, she was not the first nor the last, but somehow maybe due to plasmids she was injecting into herself outside school hours, she kept some of her kindness and generosity when she was changed forever into guardian of the Little Sisters. She is at times volatile but has a caring compassionate side despite her dark and terrifying appearance.

History:
Before New Years 1958, Elizabeth was a teacher until they changed her, during that time she subscribed to teachings of Sofia Lamb, finding her philosophy more realistic than the so-called pretension or idealistic bullshit, Andrew Ryan would have them believe.

Skills:
Stab: A Big Sister's basic attack. When at melee range, she will jab her ADAM syringe into the player, dealing a high amount of damage.

Charge: When at a distance from the player, a Big Sister will run towards Delta at a high speed, dealing minor damage and minor knockback, as well as temporarily disorienting the player.
Fire Barrage: Occasionally, a Big Sister will fire three large exploding fireballs in quick succession, dealing high damage.

Telekinetic Pummel: Occasionally, a Big Sister will use an advanced form of Telekinesis to lift every nearby object around them, pull them towards her and fire them at the player, with the amount of damage depending on the size of the object. If the object is large enough, it will push the player back, temporarily disorienting them.

Drain: When low on health, Big Sisters will run towards a wandering Splicer, impale them with their ADAM syringe and drain their health. This gradually recharges the Big Sister's health, but leaves her vulnerable. Attacking her while she is draining a Splicer will cause her to drop her victim, killing the latter in the process.

Teleport: Big Sisters possess a unique version of the Teleportation Plasmid used by Houdini Splicers. The energy ripple seen when they disappear is purple as opposed to red, and they can teleport much farther. They are seen using this ability in a handful of scripted situations throughout the game, and they may also use it to reach the player from a distance during battle.

So begins...

Of course there were other people within the diner, many variations. Then again the entire of Wing City seemed like a magical or scientific crossroads. You could literally find anyone in this place if you searched hard enough. This of course would highlight the fact that figure clad in ancient victorian diving suit although little more lithe was sat away, she appeared to be shaking clutching in her thick bronze gloves a picture, a photo. A closer look would show a woman with ivory hair smiling with another person dressed in a cop's uniform her arm around the other woman. It was a shopping mall type image, from those photobooths. Quiet, very faint sobbing could be heard, from the figure, her helmet drowning out most of the noise. On her shoulders was a very ragged WCPD jacket, on her shoulder was the insignia with her name, Officer McCarthy.

It appear ancient and state this figure was clad in what appeared to be a diving suit brought more questions to the fore. Everything about her appeared miserable, in fact it was hard to tell what her expression was, only a red glow lit up her visor on the helmet, the helmet which like the rest of the ensemble likely weighed a great deal. Yet she held it up and appeared to be able to handle what most her size and proportions would rarely be able to carry.

Vercerigo walked through the doors, quickly scanning all he saw as he headed directly toward the bartender. He noted the sad looking diver and frowned. He wondered whether he should try and help.
He sat down, gestured to a bartender and said, "Sir, I'll have a glass of pinot noir if you have it. Tell me, have you seen a young lady by the name of Alice Raine?"

Allison stared at the figure that sat a few seats down from her, and upon noticing the WCPD shield, smirked. "Mind if I sit with you?" She asked as she walked over to the rather unusually dressed person.

It took a few seconds before a voice, small and sad sounding escaped her suit, "You are welcome to sit anywhere... although I can't promise I will be amazing company..." her hands lifted up revealing bronze guantlet's like the rest of her costume. Nonetheless those hands gripped the helmet and slowly tugged at the fittings of the helmet. Once pried loose she lift it off completely revealing a woman with raven blonde hair and eyes with an almost ethereal sapphire to them, seeming almost unreal or even dream-like. Nonetheless those eyes displayed wetness, visibly announcing tears, combined with her facial expression. There was an almost melancholy to her, something akin to a dream.

Lifting a mug she took a sip of her conconction before speaking, "E... E... Elizabeth McCarthy... Wi...W...W...---" before she could finish her composure collapsed and she burst into tears, the other guantlet gripping, no clinging to the photo. Now near enough, it was possible to see the other woman was different to Elizabeth... but they both appeared to be cops. Still as she sobbed now loudly, drawing attention from the diner.

Before when she cried her helmet had muffled those sounds, but now the waitress looked utterly shocked and approached over, with softness in her smile, "Honey, what is up? Perhaps you would love some of our pie. I promise it would bring smile to your lips?" hearing no answer, she turned to Allison, "Hun, what will you have? We have a lovely menu, just you ask and Ronald can cook it up no doubt dear."

Allison sat down next to Elizabeth, in an attempt to possibly comfort her if it came to it, judging from the girl's mental state. She sighed, and looked at her phone. I'm not a shrink, nor a negotiator.... Allison then looked at the waitress. "Oh, yes ma'am, I'll take a coffee black, and some flapjacks, if you can."

She then looked at the young lady. "Are you going to be okay, officer? I'm not from around here, but I can tell another officer in a heartbeat....though having the jacket certainly didn't hurt," she chuckled and pulled out her wallet, which showed her badge as Andesia Metropolitan Police Department.

The raven haired woman looked up, her eyes moist. The tears trickling down her face in great quantity as she sniffled and tried to speak but instead sobs erupted out of her. After a few breath where she took three deep breaths, she finally could speak, "I wish... I... wish..." again she broke down, but this time she forced herself to calm down, despite how difficult it was, "My name is Elizabeth McCarthy of Wing City Police Department. I am sorry I am not great company, but I am suffering grief." again a long deep breath to keep her composure, "I am not great company, if you feel that is an issue... I... I... suggest you leave..." it was polite but it was clear as she immediately collapsed under the strain of her sadness in tears again, sobbing and sniffling her face a mess of snot and tears.

The waitress meanwhile ignored this and nodded to Allison, "Hun, I shall bring them right up, just give me ten minutes... I'll also bring tissues for your friend..." with that she walked off back behind the counter and began to boil a fresh pot while sticking the order on a spike.

Allison, short on ideas, good or bad, decided the best course of action was to put a hand on the girl's shoulder. With a sigh, she continued. "I can't imagine what you're going through, but I'm not one to leave a fellow officer down in the dumps. So, if you're feeling ready, tell me what's up, and I'll gladly help as best as I can, okay?"

Another moment passed. "I'll even pay for your food if you're hungry. Alright?"

Once more Elizabeth tried to control her emotions taking long deep breaths before starting to speak, "It is complicated, well to be frank most of my life is like that. I guess it is best to explain what I am. Even that in itself is complicated... but it does help clarify questions..." though not visibly sobbing she seemed to be trying very hard to keep the composure, "I am not of this time or this place, I am rather instead or was formally a School Teacher in an underwater paradise named Rapture... Well Paradise is a loose term. It was meant to be a place without the authority of Communism the overreach of Government and the arm of the Papacy. A place where someone could innovate without being judged or held back by ethics. You can imagine this would lead to problems, but well it seemed too good to be true..."

Pausing she began reciting the speech everyone would hear upon entering Rapture, "Is a man not entitled to the sweat of his brow? "No" says the man in Washington, "it belongs to the poor"... "Noo" says the man in the Vatican, "it belongs to God"... "No" says the man in Moscow, "it belongs to everyone." I... rejected those answers, instead, I chose something different. I chose... RAPTURE." with that she would continue, "The founder was called Andrew Ryan... I was merely chosen to be part of this vision a young girl just out of University in Montana with my teaching degree. I was overjoyed... utterly overjoyed and when you saw it first time... Imagine just imagine the sheer beauty, a city underwater and so beyond compare... This is how all dreams begin... but yet you wonder how did I become like this, that comes later, for now this is merely the beginning of my tale..." Elizabeth barely managed to keep herself from breaking at that point, but still did, "I will admit what occurred was my fault and my stupid naivety, but there was more happiness before the eventual crushing despair."

"That's....certainly different, I'll be honest. We had something like that on my world, but it was a research facility, rather than some kind of paradise. I assume what happened there is why you're as sad as you are right now?" Allison frowned and looked at her phone, before she looked back at the young woman.

Continuing she nodded, "It is and it is not. Why I am upset now connected to another chance I had here. But that would be rushing the story, you need to understand everything fully..." as she spoke the waitress arrived with some tissues and what Allison had ordered seeming to smile, "First person to get her to talk sugar, we tried for days, anyway enjoy!" with that the waitress was off as Elizabeth continued, "There was no place like Rapture I can't even describe the utter beauty you saw, it is too difficult. Just believe me no place like this and to be a teacher to Rapture's future was an overwhelming privilege. Nay honour. And that itself was the beginning of everything." pausing she took a sip of her tea before going on, "Each class had a teaching assistant and normally this would not matter, but for what came next... I will confess something now, I am gay and or lesbian, but in Montana I had no idea, really seemed impossible, but being in Rapture freed me, I finally understood..."

Before she could continue she broke down in tears, clearly the next part of her story was difficult, for whatever reason. She just appeared utterly distraught again.

The doors of the diner swiftly swung open as another random patron entered the building, wearing her usual attire of a deep red dress which hugged around her body, easily defining the assets she was designed to have. She was obviously showing fatigue as steam slowly raised from her body, breathing more heavily than usual to allow more blutrinium to be converted into energy. With just a small glance across the room, LAI had already taken in the fine details of those who inhabit it before her attention was grabbed by a cop who sat with some other person. Perfect, cops know places well.

Making a beeline to the table, Lai finally appeared next to the cop, her bright blue eyes stared down. There were no pupils, just a blue 'light', two darker blue lines faintly stood out as they crossed; being vertical and horizontal. The movement of her sight caused the crossed section to move with it, acting as a pupil itself. "I'm sorry to be interrupting you. I seem to be a little lost, y'know, I'm not from around here." Lai stated, as she slowly lowered herself down on the seat. "Are you two able to help me out?"

Allison sighed and took a sip of her coffee, before she looked at the young woman. "I won't pretend to know how you feel. I can't, but what I can do is tell you to pick yourself up, dust off that suit of yours, and be a proper policewoman. I'm not saying you can't be emotional, I'm just saying that you're not exactly making yourself out to be what you're supposed to be."

She then noticed the young blonde woman nearby. "Umm....yeah. What do you need?"

Hurt by the reaction she was about say words of an angry kind, but the arrival of someone else, stopped her before they could escape. Still livid, though she was merely polite, "I suggest you try people who care... I do, but evidently the person here does not understand when someone shares a harrowing story you don't demean them and speak stiff-upper-lip nonsense." lifting her gauntleted hand she rubbed at her eyes still wet with tears, "You are welcome to join. But apparently I shall be leaving. I won't have my struggles belittled because you refuse to understand them." with that the strange woman in the diving suit stood up replaced her helmet and started towards the door, "Grief eats at you, even ignoring it won't save yourself... You'll be wise to think of that." now turned towards the door she started to leave.

Although someone could stop her if they did choose.

Lai's face instantly dropped at the police woman's reaction, something saddening had obviously occurred before she had appeared in the scene. However, she can't afford to have someone leave her without giving any information, it would bug her for months. "Now now, you shouldn't leave." Lai quickly called out to the woman before she could leave the building, her voice as soft as it can be, "I may not be aware of what happened, but you shouldn't run away from things like that. It's not healthy." The soft smile of Lai paired up very well with her strange eyes, a constant stare without the need to blink along with her eyes being large; it was as if she was a doll.

"Come back here and we can talk things through in good detail, yeah?" She tapped on the woman's past seat as a calm invitation to return to the table, followed with a small look towards the other woman that sat with her. "You should be more considerate of those around you, maybe people would like you more." She spoke out, the words bringing back a sense of Deja Vu as she was reminded of her talks with her creator, always pointing out his flaws and attempting to help him.

Allison let out a sigh and put her coffee cup down. "Okay, look. I'm not a negotiator, or a psychiatrist. I'm an officer of the law. I'm okay with listening to her problems, but I'm not gonna have any of the 'oh woe is me' bullcrap. Especially for someone with a badge. If that makes me a bad person, I'm sorry. I didn't mean anything hurtful when I said what I said, okay?"

She shook her head and took out a pack of cigarettes from her jacket pocket. "I'm still up to talk about it if you want, though. Just know you're not gonna get a pity party out of me."

Glaring with her diver helmet still obscuring her features she sat down speaking in almost a hiss, "This is not about woe is me... This is about why I am upset and to know the cause you must know the full story..." lifting her gauntlets up she unfastened the huge metal helmet placing it down, "But fine if you must know the reason... I fell in love with my partner and she died... before her I joined up with Wing City Police Department because I wanted to make good and do good even though I was essentially a weapon. I wanted to help others..." with that she broke down again her anger vanished as she sniffled, "It's my fault, I got cocky I believed myself able to handle anything, but forgot she was not altered like I am... whereas I could go after them, they were not bullet proof..." unable to speak further her head raised tears streaming down, "I wanted to do good, but first person I meet and assigned with ends up dead... I love her... I cared for her immeasurably, but..."

Now completely unable to speak she merely stared at the table, everything about her was strong looking, but her expression was just to be broken, she may have heard the comment to come back, but just reliving her partner's death had removed any chance of coherence from her.

Lai placed her hands together quickly, giving off a small clap as she cocked her head to the side, her eyes closed with a large accommodating smile across her face while a small sigh of happiness and sympathy fell from her mouth. "Oh a love story!" she exclaimed with happiness before lowering her hands and looking directly at the helmeted girl, her artificial eyes staring directly where the woman's eyes would be, as if she could see through the helmet. "I understand your feelings, but you shouldn't blame yourself. These things happen, it's the curse of life."

Lai softly placed her hands across the table, one of her hands atop the mourning woman as she stared through the front window of the diner. "I don't expect you to let this go, it's nearly impossible to." she turned back to the woman, another smile and the cock of the head, "You should keep hold of those feelings, they'll empower you, they'll help you. As long as you hold on to these feelings, your love will still be beside you. Always."

It appeared from a brief cursory look that Allison had left sometime during all this exchange. The Former Big Sister did not feel terrible about this. Maybe she did wear her emotions on her sleeve but the alternative was her emotions being completely shut down and becoming just a weapon. It was serendipity perhaps she had not completely lost it, but hardly best of circumstances she had been a junkie like the many others in Rapture. Somehow this prevented the process of her completely being modified. Memories in tact everything, but less human, more like an aberrant monster. It was a mockery of simple existence. A lie. Still better to know ones self than lock your emotions and become a shell of a human. Elizabeth may be a monster but she recognized this, but decrying another for being weak is also monsterous.

Nonetheless here was what was not totally human expressing emotion. It was an enamouring thing. An oxymoron of sorts. Elizabeth found herself puzzled but intrigued and though she did not respond right away, she gave a shy grin, "Perhaps, but my own cockiness cost her life... I may forget how fragile a human body is, my body is still like that, but it's covered in bronze, iron and steel. Meanwhile you are different you appear human but there is nothing imperfect about your appearance. I suspect you are not. Though you are more human than certain others..." her eyes still wet, gradually drying she went on, "I thank you though for understanding, for months I have come here in grief trying to think could I have done more... it's why I got angry... when I finally open up I was pushed away... it hurt... but maybe it is time for me to move on, but I can't do it alone..."

With that the Former Big Sister gave a ghost of a smile to LAI, "Elizabeth McCarthy Wing City Police Department, at your service."

This woman appeared to be more and more like her own creator, emotionless, dull, dense, and mainly accidentally inhumane in her own actions. But that isn't all, she tends to dwell on her past actions, looking back at what could not be redone instead of looking forward to what could be done. Then again, Lai could also be grouped in with the two, she holds little understanding on what it is to be 'alive'. In fact, the simple term is questioned on a daily business; what is 'alive' and how does it work? Those ignorant to this may group it up as a coincidence, a divine prominence, or even an accident. However, they are always those who are 'alive', they understand Biology as far as their brain allows them, but Lai has no limit. Perhaps that's what had caused her to become inhumane, careless, brutal. But why did she give words of motivation to such a woman as this 'Elizabeth'? It's quite simple; to fill the gap.

Lai replied with a smile as she leaned back in her chair, placing her hands behind her head in the process, causing her chest to push forward even further to grab the attention of any lustful fools still in the diner. It was fun. "Now now, humans are weak things. She explained a little before pointing at her head, "All because of what they have here." As another action, Lai grabbed one of the menus held upright on a stand in the middle of the table, softly tossing one towards Elizabeth in the process as she opened one up, "Now, what's easier is to let this go and continue with what we are faced with now. A good bit of hunger!" She laughed a little, motioning that eating was actually an important process for her synthetic body before a hint of realisation pulsed through her face.

"Ah, I'm Lai. Nice to meet you!"

There seemed to be a certain aloofness about this construct, that much Elizabeth could fathom. It was not intentional evidently it was not like the arrogance of say Andrew Ryan which was based on ego no this was formed due to not fully comprehending the real world in a sense. Still Elizabeth could not truthfully judge her for this, after all at one point Elizabeth had believed in the teachings of Eleanor Lamb. Yes some people may have been harsh to the construct for how it responded, the former Big Sister understood that there was more of complex here and thus a gentle caress may provide more help. Not to mention despite her current predicament she was still human and seeing the construct chest thrust out like that, brought uncomfortable warmness to her cheeks and awkward emotions. Best ignore them.

"Humans are not weak dear as a whole. There is strong humans and weak humans. There good humans and evil humans. There are cruel humans and kind humans... I am little much neither I am foolish human and also broken. Broken because my purpose was to be a weapon yet these emotions hinder me." pausing she tried to figure how to posit this, "My emotions are not bad. I am grateful for them. But they hinder, humans can be really strong and even daring. Think of my former beloved she was a cop who knew the risks and yet put her life in danger. That to me is not weakness, it is courage. Yes there is no practical discernible reason for this, but humans are this illogical. Take it from one who is one."

She giggled. It was the first time she had even displayed such emotion, "Like in my eyes you are cute LAI and though you think the heart is what makes human human, it's our mind. My mind intact mostly outside of little frazzled." again a small smile behind raven-haired woman, "Drugs are bad take my word on it... but regarding food. I have money if you wish I could order you some nourishment if you wish and pleasure to meet you LAI. As stated I am pondering something, but I feel I am in a unique position here, I used to be a teacher and before any of that I shall teach you what it is to be human. From my understanding. Consider it a thank you for cheering me up."
