Their father smiled after them, watching them go before resting his head on her shoulder, nuzzling it lightly as he did. Erich looked up at her, smiling as he did, leaning back so he could better scoot closer to her. "What would you like to, love? You've been hard at work all day, it seems." A light kiss accompanied his words, the man happy to be with his wife again.

They had taken him off of the flightline for some time, but eventually allowed him back on in return for regular examinations. All in all, work was play for him, at least when they didn't have an excess of briefings.

He chuckled at that, wrapping an arm about her as he did. "I will, won't I?" Erich planted another kiss on her cheek, inching closer with every one to her mouth. "... but I don't know if we can handle another six babes, love. Not at the moment." He could tease her right back, if only because he loved her so.

The Belkan settled his head against her, happy to be home with the woman he loved. "Then spend time we shall, my Thistle." The name came out mispronounced, as always, but it was a term of affection to him.

"Quite so, as lovely as they are." He sighed, stretching his legs out as he did; the rubber soles of his boots landing with a dull thud before he moved closer, if at all possible, to the woman he loved. "Well. I might like to speak with you after she's visited, love." He planted another kiss, this time on her lips, drawing his nose across her own. Not that there'd be much of it, of course.

"I love you." Was his comment, laying his head against hers once more.

"Hmm," He commented, rubbing his cheek against her. "The children are still awake, love." That, and they were expecting company, of all things. The knock at the door did catch his attention moreso, however, raising his head to turn about in curiosity. Visitors? They were just expecting his mother.

"Love," He asked, looking back to her for a moment, "You weren't expecting anyone else, were you?"

Erich found himself a hint perplexed as well, standing with his wife. His mother and another. Surely his father hadn't come, not after he had disowned him? Erich certainly couldn't help but wonder if Alke's hopes, however naive they might have seemed at times, might have come true. Perhaps they had worn him down.

"Let's go see them," He halfheartedly suggested, part of him unsure if he wanted to see his father today. There was little doubt that each time he didn't harbor hope, but each time also managed to hurt him that much more.

Erich was noticeably more quiet around his father, though he still smiled at seeing his mother, nodding happily in her direction. He did his best to avoid his father's gaze all the while, despite it being firmly latched on him. The younger Brenner sighed, standing firmly by his wife's side.

"A pleasure too, I hope that Erich's not giving them too many sweets." Erica smiled at that, though she knew that was her MO, not her son's. "Can I see them, or are they a bit too rowdy?"

"Oh my." The grandmother commented, smiling to her son as she did. "Well, we might want to wait them out." She continued with small talk, moving to draw Alke away, if she could, whilst Steven stood still with Erich for a moment, the two finally bothering to look at each other in the same moment. Nary a word was said, yet Erich decided to leave the man where he stood, preferring to follow his mother.

Steven simply didn't reply, in action or in word.

Erich accompanied them but had no words to add on the matter, preferring Alke to stand on the issue. They were her children too, and more importantly, she was their mother. "I'm sure he'll just sit about," Erica commented, trying to justify not having to have something of a dispute once they returned home.

While the two spoke however, Nikolaus, having worked his way out from under the eyes of the nannies, meandered down the hall, unnoticed by his mother or father, busy with his new plane and one of his old ones, having quite the aerial engagement in his mind before he wound up in the lobby, not noticing Steven nearby until several moments later. What was an old man doing here? He wasn't talking to anyone, but he looked a lot like his own father, and so Nikolaus approached, he himself looking much like Erich, and gestured to the planes in his hands.

"Want to play airplanes?"

For a few moments did Steven simply stare at the young boy, and the young boy staring back, having learned not to walk away from someone without an answer. Eventually did the man extend his hand, Steven accepting the alien craft and moving it slightly, from side to side. Tears crept to the grandfather's eyes as he accepted the young boy's offer with a nod.

Erich thought to respond, but knew that he would only sour the encounter. Instead he decided to watch, squeezing his love's hand as he did, fighting desperately to choke back tears that begged to come to the surface at the sight. He wanted it to go back to that so badly, to the days when he could play airplanes with his father, to laugh and play with the man who seemed to despise him now.

But seeing this nearly caused him to break down, kept only in place by his wife, despite trying his best to move away.

Nikolaus was none-the-wiser, however, him and his grandfather causing their craft to amble about, the little boy making suitable noises at the appropriate times. Were it that one was ignorant of relations at large, one wouldn't have thought it unusual in the slightest, save only for the old man's tears, which he did his best to wipe away.

Of course Nikolaus' plane, crewed by a superior pilot and it being a superior Belkan craft, won the engagement.

Steven hesitated for a moment as the boy embraced him, having not done such a thing in quite a while. After a few moments of waiting did he respond, hugging the boy back, eyes watering again at the act. "... I'm glad he could too." Came the response, sighing as he did. This, given time, might heal the wound he bore, that feeling of failure in his role as a father, but it would take just that - time.

Erich certainly wasn't ready.

He knew he wasn't ready, either, the Belkan drawing his wife's hand up to his lips to kiss for a moment, looking to her thereafter. The man had no need to ask verbally if he might leave, hoping his face would speak the question for him.

Erich nodded, rubbing his cheek against hers before stammering quietly. "I... yes. I'll go play with them." Indeed it would. The man set off, quietly as he could, down the hallway to the two's room, which had been a vocal point on the side of both the boys and the girls; for what kind of man wanted to be in a room with girls, with all of their girly things? No real man, that's who.

So the officer soon did his best to clean himself up, and joined the two young ladies, happy to partake in their mock gala among stuffed animals and other guests.

Steven nodded, wiping away more tears as he did. "... they all sound very nice, Kaiser. You and Nikolaus are twins too, aren't you?" The grandfather finally managed, meeting his grandchildren.

"I'm sure you would," Spoke Kaiser's papaw, looking to him with a smile and a light chuckle. "I've no doubt of that." A glance to Alke carried an embarrassed air, an apology unspoken for fear of the children in front of him. He didn't want to embarrass them or... or their father. And he certainly didn't want to embarrass the woman who just so scolded his grandson.

"He's rather stubborn." Just like his father, and his father's father.

Steven nodded, reinforcing their mother's stance. They did indeed have to play nice. It wouldn't do to have his grandchildren whipped, either. The boy's invitation did make him smile, though he asked permission first, looking to their mother with a curious glance as he considered it, "Sure, Kaiser. But your sisters are girls," The man commented, "It's what girls do." Still no doubt a sissy thing, he was sure the boy would say.

Well, one day he would understand.

Steven sighed, knowing this was coming, and looked to the young woman, placing his hands behind his back as he did. She had forbidden it, but the man wanted to see for himself. "Erica kept coming, ma'am. I wanted to see for myself." And see did he, the boys looking just like their father. Something he certainly didn't expect.

"I know... I know Erich doesn't want to see me now."

"I thought he was dead." The man's stubbornness persisted, but he soon cured it, closing his eyes for a moment and mentally reprimanding himself. “And I will.” He needed to speak with him, but not now. Not in the shape that Erich was in. Despite his age, Steven still maintained several skills from his days in the LW, and observation was one of them. “And I will be most careful to.”

He followed her, and almost entered before pausing, looking at her for a moment. “… thank you.”

The man understood the terms well enough, entering to see the little ones rush towards him, smiling at the horde of children. Happily did he engage in their games, relishing the chance to finally meet the children his wife had gone to see for so very, very long. Their papaw was more than happy to impart them the very attention

And Erich was happily ignorant, enjoying the time he spent with his daughters, and making the ball that much more legitimate with an officer attending.
