A man with flat blue eyes and a charming smile; between the two of them, he can go far in this life. Nobody quite knows what Evan does for a living or who he thinks he is, but he has the reputation of a bit of a womaniser. Hell, you would be too, if you had guns like that.

So begins...

Ohhh, who's going to take me home tonight?

Ohhh, down beside that red fire light.

Ohhh, we're gonna let it all hang out.

Fat bottomed girls, you make the rockin' world go round.

White earbuds were crammed into his ear canals, the sound of Queen's greatest hits thumping and thrumming in his eardrums, his eyes flickering as he ran. His powder blue sneakers thumped against the pavement in time with the beat, breath coming to him quickened as sweat poured out of his pores with his early morning run. His own attire was simple; grey long shorts and a black wife-beater, showing off his muscular arms and toned legs. When you were Evan Brohm, there were very little lengths you'd go to in order to show off your assets.

Woaaaaah, Redhead, three o'clock. Evan immediately angled his path to intersect with hers, feigning inattention as a car horn blared. He twisted his head to the side to see where it went-

His torso collided with the girl's sending him staggering as he attempted to dodge around her. "Shit! Shit, shit shit!" He said, stumbling. Ripping his earbuds out of his ears, he faced her.

"You okay? I'm sorry - should've signalled before making a turn like that."

As if summoned, a man sidled in behind her, his white T-shirt hugging his frame, moulding slightly to his form with the dampness of the heat outside. Sagging underneath the heavenly feel of the air-conditioned room, Evan leaned against the closed doors for a moment, his eyes closed and his body uncurling, relaxing against the granular wood. He flexed his fingers, opened his eyes, and smiled widely at the back of Maggie's head, letting himself lean further away from the door as he walked around her to the bar, giving her a quick "excuse me" as he passed.

Then he seemed to stop. As if not realizing he walked around someone. Turning around to face the brunette, he offered up a wide, kind smile. "Hey there." He said, quietly.

"Want to come and sit with me? It seems like we're the only two people in the world here."

Evan smiled slightly, tilting his head to the side as he examined her face, searching it with his eyes - eyes that seemed to reflect no light, eyes that pulsed a deep blue. As he took her in, he quirked a brow.

"Wouldn't say it's a habit, really. Plus, I don't think you're all that strange. Well, the goldfish in the bag is kind of strange, truthfully, but other than that you seem quite normal to me." He tapped the side of his nose. "Are you saying there's a reason I shouldn't ask you to sit with me? Do you have cooties or something?"

He grinned again; the wide and charming grin of a man who knew how to talk.

Evan gave her a long glance, from her feet to the top of her head, lanky and long. When he reached her eyes again, he nodded seriously. "I'll say. Lesson learned for the future, I suppose."

As she moved to step around him, he pivoted, following her movements, a small laugh escaping him. "Well, hey now. Didn't take you for the kind of person to barrel into someone and walk away without so much as a name drop." He waggled his eyebrows.

"Don't be unfriendly. Let's start over. My name's Evan." He held out his hand.

Evan lessened his grin when her curious gaze flickered over his eyes - a momentary slip - before she focused on other things, making him relax slightly. He took her hand in his own, squeezed it, and smiled. "There you go. My name's Evan, and I would very much appreciate some mostly normal and occasionally rude company today, Maggie. So, let's start off with the sitting at a table thing. Then maybe I can buy you a drink." He turned, leading the way to a booth, where he slid into one side of it and began tapping at a menu, ordering a bottle of water for himself.

"So, Maggie. I have to ask; what's with the fish? Are you holding on to them as a present, or are they yours?"

Evan laughed. "A little of column A, and a little of column B, I'm afraid. While the blind-siding was most definitely unintentional, I'm still hoping you'll produce your number. Or, at least, that you'll let me make it up to you for nearly running you down."

He quirked a brow, then, appraising her for a long, silent moment. "Do you like Ballet, Danielle?"

Evan flipped the card around, glancing at the words before grinning at her. Dancer. Knew it.

Slam dunk, Evan. Slam dunk.

"I'd like that. But the reason I asked was because I have tickets to Sleeping Beauty at the Wing City Theatre on Tuesday. And I will have no idea what's going on, so someone who knows the ins and outs of Ballet would be helpful to have along for the ride." He gave her a crooked smile, holding up the card as he walked backwards a step.

"We could make a night of it. Dinner, Ballet, walk in the park. Bet you won't get a better offer from the next guy that runs you down."

Evan watched her indecision with a guarded expression, the wheels and cables in his head turning rapidly as she opted for the chair across from him. Interesting. Very, very interesting. Especially the way that she guarded the fish, kept it from spilling. Clearly, they meant something to her; she was constantly touching them, as if that little plastic bag was a lifeline or a safety net, a buoy in a storm. Maybe he was reading too much into this particular situation.

Or maybe, as always, he was spot-on.

"I know a little. I know they need to bathe and feed and poop." He explained, as the bottle of water showed up at the table. He took a swig of it, setting it down on top of the table, in front of her bag of goldfish. "And that they probably would be better off in some kind of tank, or a container, or something. If that bag gets shaken too much, they could die. Brain damage and panic would hurt them. Goldfish are more resilient than other types of fish, but still, a bag and the constant moving of the water won't be good for them. If you want to carry them around, I reccomend something with glass. They need fresh water every so often, too."

He took another swig. "Did you want something to drink? I'm buying."

Evan smiled to himself, glancing down her form before shaking his head. He spun on a heel, put his own ear buds in, and began to run again.

Evan laughed slightly at the question, leaning back and swinging one arm over the chair, the other arm still man-handling his bottle, making it crackle against his palm. "Well," he began.

"I've never had any alcoholic beverage here. I like to stay in shape, and beer adds a gut and other things that are pretty much no bueno. So I'm probably not the best person to ask, if I'm honest. Ah, but I feel like I've talked a lot. Let me order you an iced tea - you need it, in this heat - and you can tell me a bit about yourself?"

Evan's eyebrows rose quietly, and if she had been paying attention to the hue of his eyes, Maggie may have noticed that they shifted to a lighter hue when wished she knew more about fish. It was quick; momentary, a sudden brightening of those unnatural blue orbs. Just as quickly as it had happened, it stopped, leaving them as flat blue as they had started. When she declared the book coincidental, he had his own, very serious doubts.

On the outside however, he gasped. "Fancy that!" He called, pointing towards the book. "The previous patrons must've left you something quite special, huh? It's a big one, too. Someone must be hearing you, up there."

He pointed a lazy hand towards the ceiling. "And don't worry, dear - most people in Wing City don't know why they're here, either. We're all just drifters, floating on through. You know?"

He smiled softly at her. "How'd you come here? I came by bus - the bus drivers in this city are maniacs, let me tell you."

Evan's brow furrowed even deeper. Well now. Wasn't this interesting. She didn't remember how she came here? And she was obviously deflecting the conversation back to him. So she was nervous, unsettled, and she seemed... vulnerable wasn't quite the right word, but he supposed that it was close.

He decided to test it.

Reaching out with one hand, he ran his fingers down the plastic bag, testing its strength. "Hm. Maybe you won't need any kind of container at all. The fish seem to be doing just fine." As he stroked the bag, his fingers brushed hers, just the faintest touch of skin on skin.

"As for me... I've been here forever, I guess. Wasn't born here - but few are, to my knowledge. I came when I was young, had a deadbeat dad, got work when I was sixteen for the post office. Worked there ever since. And damn, is it hard to deliver mail in Wing City. You never know when people are going to go nuts on you and utterly break you, you know?"

Evan waved a hand at the question, satisfied with the results of his test. "Every city has its dangers. Wing City's just has more... varied ones. And as a man that needs to get materials from point A to point B, well. There are a lot of bad things lurking under the surface; organized crime, Gods fighting, an invading force of aliens. You name it, the City's been hit by it. I'm told there's a place south, called Eden, where far less crime exists, but my work's here. And they train us to handle it."

He shrugged again. "Yeah, I know the city pretty well. I could show you around, if you're here for the long haul. If you aren't, I can show you the safest exit plan."

The iced tea arrived, and he pushed it towards her, grinning.

Evan nodded, sliding his chair backwards as he smiled at the woman, his eyebrows shooting upward. "If you want a hotel, just look up. The Gambit's Hotel is one of the finest, and they normally have plenty of vacancies. Plenty of beautiful people hang out there. You'll fit right in." He said, testing the waters again. Reaching into his pocket, he pulled out a small business card, placing it in front of her, the back of his hand brushing against her fingers as he pulled his arm back.

"That's my card. I normally work during the week, but I took the next few weeks off due to my nephew getting married. Big affair, lots of people. Could be a good way to get to know a few people, make up your mind about sticking around." He raised his eyebrows as he said that, grinning. "Want to be my plus one?"

Evan glanced down at his fingernails, examining them. "My dear, I don't flatter anyone. I speak the truth." He grinned at her as he dusted his nails off, watching her reaction. "You're quite pretty when you blush."

He guzzled the rest of his water, playfulness in his eyes as he met her gaze on her questioning. "Why yes; yes I am, Maggie. To a wedding, no less. If you'd prefer, we could go as friends. No promising what we'll be at the end of the night, though." He tapped his nose, winking at her. "In honesty, I'm looking for some company. Wedding's aren't exactly my thing. I don't look good in suits."

Evan inclined his head in thanks, grasping her hand in both of his, holding it warmly as he smiled at her. "It's most definitely a date. And I know you'll look breathtaking." He winked again, releasing her hand from his grasp and leaning backwards again, smiling at her with a warmth and light in his eyes. "The wedding's next week - not a lot of time, I know - but if you need help getting something together for it, I can point you in the right direction. It's not a theme or anything weird - we'll be subjected to some kind of ridiculous group dance, but that's just about it. Nothing to it, really."

He leaned closer again. "Hey... Thanks for doing this. It means a lot not to go alone to one of these things. My family's a bit of a twist."

Walking toward the group, with plenty of distance between himself and the approaching onslaught, his face hidden by a baseball cap that hung low and diverted light away from his eyes, leaving them in slight shadow. His gait was slow and relaxed as he placed the basket down, his back to the approaching hellhounds as he knelt on the grass. His dark blue letterman's jacket gleamed slightly as he began unpacking the basket, whistling to himself idly as he did so.

He was completely unaware of the fighting happening just up the way; two white iPod earbuds crammed into his ears.

It was with uneven steps that the woman was discovered, and a hesitance that was unlike her discoverer. Evan Brohm was never one to second-guess himself when a beautiful woman was present. Hell, he was never one to second-guess himself... ever. But the postman's uniform was crisp and clean, and he was feeling confident beyond his means when he stumbled upon the woman, sobbing her guts out in the midst of the Garden. Curious, but conscious that he was damn near terrible around crying and upset woman, he approached her.

Evan's eyes, a deep, flat blue, caressed the woman's figure, despite himself. She was crying, damn him, but that didn't stop his wandering eyes. Sighing at himself, he stooped towards her, watching her with those dead, blue, eyes.

"Hey there," he said, softly. "Are you okay? I was in the neighbourhood, and..."

Evan frowned slightly. "If there's one thing I can't stand, it's men who pick on ladies." He said, simply. Another thing he couldn't stand was passing up on an opportunity to impress a lady. Especially a vulnerable, emotional lady who had just had her stuff nicked.

"Which way did he go? I bet I could grab your stuff for you. Civil servant and whatnot. Are you going to be okay here by yourself while I go track him down?"

Die cast. Don't fuck it up, Evan.

The man nodded, smiling. "Alrighty, then. Oh, I'm Evan, by the way. Evan Brohm, postman. It's quite the pleasure to meet you, miss...?"

As he talked, he walked further into the forest, his hands delving into his pockets. He let the question hang in the air as he started forwards, the city slowly disappearing as he trekked further and further towards the outskirts.
