Clad in khaki shorts, a black tank-top, and hiking boots, Gaia walked with her eyes on the sky, a backpack slung across her shoulders and a walking-stick in hand. She'd decided to go out on a field trip, one that took her away from the stress of living in the same house as three other women, and out to simply enjoy the natural world. As one who preferred the company of plants to the comforts of human socialization, she felt her best out here. She was at her best, and in a relatively good mood too.

Pausing at the base of a massive stone pillar, she leaned her head back, looking up at the top of the structure, before walking around its perimeter, and beginning to ascend the collapsed rubble, a wide smile of excitement curving her lips at the prospect of discovering a new place. She hadn't been this far out before.

And she was sure, eventually, Callista and Lorn would send Auris out to look for her.

She had to lean against crumbled vestibules of ages long since past, feeling the history tangibly, like an energy that seeped into her fingers. Energy. It was everywhere, and she was relishing it. Perched high above the ground, on a pillar of stone that gave her a view of the entire forest, Gaia didn't notice that there was another around until she heard his expletive carried up to her on the wind.

Green eyes widened as she leaned forward, shading her eyes with one hand. Waving an arm, she tried to catch his attention.

"Hullooo~"

Her tongue poked out of her mouth momentarily as she concentrated on how to get down. Aerial exits was Auris' specialty, not hers. It was a wonder she'd gone so high up in the first place. Looking down, Gaia realized that her inerrant fear of heights was starting to set in.

She immediately scooted to her rear and began her descent in that fashion.

"Sorry, was really high up," she said a bit lamely, calling down to him when she was at the half-way point. "You from around here?"

He didn't look like a foreigner, but it was rare for her to be allowed to meet...well...anyone. Their home was so far removed from society that meeting large groups of other people was about as likely as Lorn and Callista going a day without fighting.

Of course, one had to know them to understand the analogy.

She regarded him with a curious gaze, noting his apprehension and slowing her ascent. Of course, she needed to get to the ground. Being in the air made her uncomfortable when she allowed herself to think about it.

When her toes touched the grass, she visibly relaxed, but stood in place, putting one hand on her hip, and lifting the other one to scratch at the nape of her neck. "Philidelphia?" she questioned. "Never heard of it."

Biting her lip, she looked around the ruin-marked clearing, and sighed. "But...this is the furthest I've been from home anyway. I wouldn't be much of a help." She frowned slightly, disappointment gnawing at her when she realized she wasn't being much of a help.

"M'sorry, I'm not being much of a help, am I?"

"I, wait..."

She took one or two steps after him, hesitating in case he didn't want her to follow after him. Some kind of subconscious aversion was twisting her gut, an innate feeling that told her her sisters were going to be pissed if she went through with this.

But she wanted to help! She really really did!

"I think I know where the city is." she told him confidently. "I can take you there. Maybe you can find a way back home that way."

She'd only heard of Wing City from stories her sisters had told her when they'd traversed the more inhabited parts of Terra. Of course, being the baby of the family (and the most easily manipulated), Gaia was not afforded this luxury.

So she was eager to seize the opportunity while she had it.

"Besides, I know these woods." She smiled encouragingly, taking a few steps closer until only about five feet separated the pair.

She suddenly seemed to remember something. Slapping her palm to her forehead, the girl grimaced at her own social faux-pais, and laughed nervously.

"I'm sorry! I didn't even...I'm Gaia."

She stared at the car like it was something out of a dream. She'd never seen anything like this before. Never! Did he intend to run this thing over the plant-life? Who knew how many trees he could have bucked down on his way in here!

Her astonishment turned to a sense of disquiet, her spirit troubled by the damage this monstrosity could wreak. "There's nothing for this to run safely on though. Just the plants."

This seemed to upset her.

"Why don't we walk to see? It isn't that far.."

Visibly relaxing, Gaia smiled at him and gestured with her hand for him to follow her. To make things easier on him, she picked the least obstructed route, leaving the meadow of the Ruins and diving into the cool shadows the trees afforded.

Callista and Lorn are going to kill me, she thought to herself, trying to hide the worry from her eyes.

Not if they kill each other first...

That made her grin.

"Would you believe I've never been to the city before?" she asked over her shoulder as she turned to look back at him. "What's Philidelphia like? Are there more things like that?" she pointed in the direction of the car.

"Is that what it's called?" she mumbled under her breath, slowing her pace so they could walk next to each other rather than with her pulling ahead of him. She couldn't help it. It was just...so flipping gorgeous outside!

"Suburbs is like...yeah, residences and stuff. I guess I live in the suburbs too."

More like the sub-suburbs. She and her sisters had no neighbors, and for good reason. Well, the reasons were good to her older sisters. To Gaia, not so much. It wasn't fair that the others got to go around as they pleased. She wanted to have her own adventures too.

Which she was doing right now. Mentally, she flipped her siblings the bird.

"Well, it's probably not much like this place. There aren't too many worlds like Terra. Anything can happen here." She looked at him sideways, her eyes flickering over his features. She liked how he looked. Symmetrical features, warm eyes, and his mouth looked soft.

Smiling, she turned to face forward again.

"Do you have family?" she asked him. "Siblings?" Crazy sisters?

Sensing the shift in his tone, Gaia turned to look at him again, her brow furrowing as a frown pulled at the corners of her mouth. Lifting a hand, she rested it gently on his shoulder, giving him a brief, comforting squeeze before pulling back.

"Don't worry." she said with a brightening grin. "You will. I'll help!"

When she turned back to the front, she slowed to a stop, her eyes fixed on a figure who had melded out of the shadow.

He stood in dark jeans and a hoody, the fabric obscuring his face in darkness. Yet, she could hear a dark sort of laughter rumbling from his throat.

Eyes wide, her lips parted to speak.

"Um..hi. Are you lost too?"

The man didn't respond. He just stood there, as silent and still as the trees around them.

She nodded silently, impulsively taking Amin's hand before slowly walking forward, angling to the right. To her dismay, the man moved to bar their path.

"Look, we're just trying to get to the city.." she explained, her voice quavering from nerves. When she dared to take another step forward, she jumped in surprise, for the man in front of them simply vanished into thin air.

Eyes wide, her breath coming in quick, short gasps, Gaia turned to Amin, reknewing her grip on his hand before pulling him forward at a faster walk than before.

"Sunlight sunlight sunlight," she muttered under her breath, guiding the young man so that they didn't stray in the shadows for too long. She realized this was probably frightening Amin, so she did her best to appear brave, even though her hand inside his was trembling slightly.

"Just stay out of the shadows and we should be okay..." she told him.

As the pair pressed forward, Amin would feel a hand seize his shoulder, wrenching him away from Gaia and attempting to knock him off-balance to throw him to the ground. In that same moment, the man in the hoody reappeared, grabbing Gaia by the front of her shirt and slamming her against the trunk of a tree.

She cried out, but her breath was cut off by the figure's forearm pressing hard against her throat. Slowly, though without hesitation, the man withdrew a long, wicked knife from a sheath on his hip, raising it to stab the girl through the heart.

She pushed at his forearm, turning her face to the side as she thrashed, but to no avail, he had his knee between her thighs, locking her in place.

Up above the tree-tops surged with a sudden, powerful gust of wind.

There was the sound of a roar, like the terror of an oncoming train that whooshed overhead, stirring up the leaves in small spirals all around the scuffling trio. A massive oak collapsed with a deafening crash, terrifyingly close to the three of them. Amin's intervention successfully deterred the hooded man's attempt at murder, and he withdrew with a hiss, pointing the knife threateningly at the boy, though he looked far less intimidating when he hobbled back.

Gaia was on her knees, rubbing at her throat and sucking in air. She looked at the tree, shifting her gaze to the sky with widened eyes.

There was a blinding flash, a blast of warm air scattering leaves and nearly knocking the hobbling assailant sideways.

"Uh oh," Gaia whispered, struggling to stand.

There, standing not twenty feet from the attacker, and still smoking at the shoulders, was the terrifying presence of her lethal, red-headed sister.

Callista.

"I was walking!" Gaia replied, though with far less volume. There was no quaver to her voice, however. She was not afraid of her sister, not in the same way that she was afraid of the man with the knife. "I was going to show Amin how to get to the city..."

Gaia Beloke rubbed at her arm, shifting to lean against the tree, regarding the argument before her with an air of boredom. However, her gaze rested on Amin, shifting from him to Lorn and back again. What was the other sister thinking?

"Just let him go, guys..." Gaia pleaded, her tone met by scoffing from both of her elder sisters. She was frustrated, angry that things had turned out this way, that all of her ambitions to help had backfired, and now they weren't listening to anything she was saying!

"Lorn!" she finally shouted, drawing their gazes away from the young man and over to her. She even stepped around him, giving him a clear path for escape.

Gaia noticed this too. "He's not going to do anything. He isn't even from here, he--"

Gaia tugged her hand from Lorn's the moment they were back to the house, making her way over to Amin, and ignoring Callista's death stare as the younger girl gently touched his elbow.

Her eyes radiated apology, lips parting as she struggled to find words that could make up for this horrible situation. Kidnap him? Really? She had no idea what her sisters were thinking. Not at all.

She swallowed, withdrawing from him and walking with her eyes on the ground. The presence of her sisters was like a hovering cloud, even as the pair were ushered into the expansive, tiled, and well-kept foyer of the lovely Victorian home. Stairs extended up to the second floor on both sides of the foyer, with doors leading off to either side of the house. The blonde who had been in the doorway just moments before was now standing at the top of the stairs, smiling down at the other four.

"I'm so sorry." she finally managed. "I didn't...mean for any of this to happen. I didn't think they'd..." she stammered, her eyes burning. But she quickly shook her head, putting one palm to her forehead before taking a deep breath and turning to the side, so he wouldn't see that tears were threatening.

"Look, I know I'm probably the last person you want to talk to right now..but I can show you where you can sleep." She sniffed, clearing her throat and sighing.

She didn't attempt to reach for his hand, instead touching his elbow to guide him forward. On up the stairs she went, her eyes on the floor, and on down a lush carpetted hall they went. The last room on the left was the room he could have, and it was a rather stately, neutrally decorated space. The bed was large, a canopy, mahogony in color and matched with a dresser and a night-stand.

The opposite wall had two separate windows that were to the rear of the house, showing the massive forest that extended away from the property. "I can show you the rest of the place later, if you want."

She could sense his anxiety, practically feel it rolling off of him in waves. "Look...Callista's a lot of bark and no bite. She's just got a bad attitude, but she won't hurt you. Lorn is...well, they're both protective of us. They're acting out of concern, but they'll let you go soon, and if they don't, I'll get you out of here, okay? I promised I'd help you, and.." She was looking at the ground as she spoke. "...and I'm failing miserably right now, but I'll make it up to you."

She squeezed his hand. "It isn't though! God they're both being so stupid." She reached with her free hand to scratch the nape of her neck, in a gesture that curiously mimicked his earlier acts of nervousness.

There was a crash downstairs, the sound of loud, angry shouting, and the Auris' laughter. Gaia sighed to herself, muttering something about how dinner was always a chaotic event, and then turned to pull Amin in after her into the bedroom. She kept the door opened partially, for good measure, then went over and flopped on the bed.

"So." she said. "Can I explain stuff? Or do you want me to leave you alone for a bit?"
