Personality
Gary is filled with confidence that the power of light will outshine all in the end, and fights accordingly. He does his best to survive, but would not hesitate to sacrifice himself if it meant dealing a greater blow to a particularly hateful agent of darkness. When confronted with a particularly well-forged weapon or an obscure bit of religious lore, however, a more curious and inquisitive side emerges.
Equipment
Gary carries a two-handed sword and wears a fine suit of plate armor if he suspects battle is imminent, the better to vanquish his enemies with the power and reach the sword offers before they do the same to him. Because of the performing of an ancient weapon-bonding ritual, Gary is able to imbue his weapon with more power than most, but the consequence is that he must not willingly abandon that sword under any circumstances. Even if it is sundered, Gary must do his best to repair it, explaining his interest in weaponcraft. While no shame will come to Gary if the sword is completely destroyed, woe to anyone who actually accomplishes such a feat. Just in case, he carries backup weapons in the form of a longbow with an extremely heavy pull for long-range targets, along with a quiver of 20 arrows, and a basic short sword for the purpose of cutting himself free of a foe that has seized him bodily. As a representative of his faith, Gary has also been entrusted with a shard of the sun, a relic of Pelor that allows him to blast from two to four beams of searing light (but no two beams can be directed at the same target). Gary also wears a belt that enhances his physical strength and an amulet that increases his ability to take punishment, but more important than those two items is a cloak that enhances his charisma, which for a paladin such as himself is useful for both smiting evil and resisting the effects of spells. Over his eyes are a pair of goggles that enhance his visual acuity and can briefly allow him to see all things as they truly are (once per battle, and the effect lasts for 1 round). On his arms are a pair of red bracers that toughen his flesh to rival that of a minotaur and grant him a small ability to withstand fire damage. One of his rings helps him avoid harm, and the other allows him to deal damage as if his weapon were crafted from adamantine.
His kensei training also allows him access to unique abilities:
-Signature Weapon: Gary has invested some of his personal energy into a greatsword he carries to make it more powerful. It functions as a non-magical masterwork greatsword for anyone else that attempts to wield it. Currently it is a +5 holy greatsword of speed.
+Holy: Deals double damage against evil-aligned creatures.
+Speed: Give up the defense action to make three attacks in one turn.
-Power Surge: One turn required to prepare. Gary can increase his strength dramatically for a limited time by focusing the energy invested in his weapon.
-Ki Projection: Gary possesses an unusual talent to convince almost anyone of almost anything. While normally used outside of combat, it's quite helpful in the heat of battle for attempting to mislead the foe.
-Withstand: Gary was never the nimblest of fighters, so instead of trying to dodge an area attack, he simply stands there and concentrates in an oft-successful attempt to achieve the same effect.
This is on top of the abilities Gary possesses as a paladin and a warrior:
-Detect Evil. Usable at will. Gary cannot attack in the same turn this effect is used. Gary senses the presence or absence of evil in his field of view once the effect activates. Concentrating on the effect, which takes up his entire turn, gives more information as turns pass: first the number of evil-aligned creatures in the area, then their location, then their strength.
-Aura of Courage: Gary is immune to fear-inducing effects, and cannot be intimidated. Constant effect.
-Lay On Hands: Gary gives up his attack action in order to undo the effect of the last successful attack landed on him. Damage is healed, but not status effects. Usable three times per encounter.
-Divine Might: Gary can sacrifice some of his ability to drive away the undead (which does not count as an action) to increase the damage per successful melee attack for one turn.
-Remove Disease: Gary can give up his attack to purge the target of any and all diseases affecting it, but any damage the disease may have caused still remains. Usable once per fight.
-Combat Expertise: Gary knows how to make defensive attacks that are less likely to hit, but reduce the foe's chances to hit him back. Once the decision is made, the effect on both fighters lasts for 1 round.
-Power Attack: Gary knows how to sacrifice accuracy for damage while still keeping up his defenses. Once the decision is made to swing for power, it affects all attacks Gary makes for 1 round.
-Divine Grace: A special blessing gives Gary a greater chance than normal to resist many unusual circumstances that can cause harm, including most hostile magic. Constant effect.
History
Gary wanders as the result of a unique set of circumstances: One day while working the counter at his family's forge, he refused to sell a weapon to someone he could tell intended to use it for evil purposes. The customer summoned reinforcements, and the ensuing battle destroyed the shop and Gary's parents.
So begins...
“
Young man, is there any need to spill blood in a place of enjoyment? How about we all go together to this uncle's residence, as I have suggested?
”
“
I'm going to need some time to get my disguise ready. It would look odd for a knight to be carrying a cane into battle, so I can't wear my armor. Therefore, I need an alternate method of protecting myself should a fight erupt. Any ideas?
”
Gary Mandolera walks into the bar, wearing the yellow garb of a holy man of Pelor. Though his spellcasting power was but a slight fraction of the might an actual cleric could bring to bear, his vast experience as a paladin afforded him a measure of respect in the hierarchy.
Gary Mandolera looks like he's getting more and more used to having to walk with the assistance of his cane as he goes to a well-lit portion of the room and sits down gingerly. His fighting days were over and his spellcasting wasn't nearly as powerful as that of a dedicated cleric, but what he could do was teach the next generation a few things about how to fight.
Gary Mandolera walks into the bar, getting more and more proficient with the use of his mahogany cane with gold inlays each day, even as he grows more comfortable with the prospect of possibly never fighting again.
Gary Mandolera still carries his short sword, but his signature greatsword that he has used in so many battles is conspicuously absent from his person, as is his suit of battle-damaged armor. In their place are civilian clothes and an amply sized traveler's cloak.
Gary Mandolera notices the deference with which Hiroyuki addresses Laurent. It is obvious to his practiced social senses that the two are of unequal status. He's not sure about the laws regarding slavery in this place, but he's not exactly in the mood to go into a possibly dangerous situation when he's all but unable to continue fighting the way he did when he was younger.
Gary Mandolera finally decides he's had enough. Walking over to the two, he would simply tap Laurent on the shoulder. "Excuse me, but is this man your subordinate?"
“
Forgive me for interrupting. Anyway, my request to receive pension finally got processed and approved by my church, so I've got some spare gold to throw away. How about a round of drinks for all of us?
”
“
Hmm...sounds fair enough. With one hand on my cane, there's no way I can carry enough drinks in the other for all of us, anyway.
”
Gary Mandolera considers the question for a while, but eventually decides to take a more carefree approach for once instead of the life of rigid control he used to lead. "Surprise me."
Gary Mandolera limps into Master's Dojo. He's getting more and more capable with that mahogany cane with gold inlays every day, it seems, but nothing will ever restore his pride as a warrior as long as his knee refuses to heal.
Ah, watching the next generation. That was his one remaining joy in life now. He was in that stage of life when his mind was still sharp, but his body wasn't as strong as it used to be.
Gary Mandolera wasn't much for fighting anymore. Quite simply put, he wasn't as young as he used to be, and while he could easily outmaneuver the young bucks, it was getting more and more difficult to have the right balance between protection and mobility as his physical body slowly succumbed to the ravages of age and battle.
Gary Mandolera dragged himself into the bar. He looked every bit the warrior, from his muscular build to his well-used zweihander, but his wrinkled face, graying hair and paling eyes betrayed that he was well past his prime. A large golden medallion in the shape of a sun disk with an imposing visage in the center dangled from his neck. "Excuse me, ladies, but I could not help but overhear your conversation. If I may be so bold as to ask if I may benefit from your company?"
Gary Mandolera cracked a warm smile and slowly lowered his frame, burdened by the weight of years and memories alike, into a seat. "You are most gracious indeed. Now, it has come to my attention that one of you has a confused heart. May I inquire as to the nature of this conundrum?"
Gary Mandolera smiled to Muketsu. "I do not usually indulge in the stronger spirits, but thank you. As for you...well, being a mortal myself, and reaching the latter part of my allotted time at that, all I can say is that at some point, your gut feelings will tell you which way to go. When they do, take that road, no matter where it leads, and never look back. This is the road taken by those who dare to live on after they die in the memories of those around them." He then took a short sip to wet his whistle.
Gary Mandolera sighed with mild exasperation, then took another sip, oddly dainty for one who carried himself the way he did. "I did not ask you to make a decision right away. I only ask that you listen to your heart of hearts. If he accepts you, that is good. If he rejects you, at least you tried and can maintain a more distant relationship from there. What the other woman has to say about this, either to him or you, is irrelevant. This way, you will maximize your chances of happiness, and it will be his decision. If you do not pursue him, on the other hand, you will be forever jealous of the one he does have relations with, and your life will feel empty for it, and that way leads to naught but despair."
Gary Mandolera lumbered into the bar, weighed down not only by his armor, but by his age. His holy symbol of Pelor shone as brightly as ever, but the path of the kensai, the path of finding strength in dedication to a goal, was also taking its toll on the aging man. Snowy white hair (or at least, what little of it remained) adorned his temples, his hairline having made a full retreat. He sighed and sat down next to Legion.
"I'm just tired. Tired of the fighting. Tired of training irresponsible students that live only to fight. Tired of the necessity of the weaponmaster's trade. War does not bring salvation and glory: It brings angst and destruction."
Gary Mandolera nodded slowly. "I suppose it's worth a try." He seemed easier in his seat now.
