GHX-67's Story

The panels surrounding the flashlight that made up the unit's face moved up in down, the human equivalent of eyebrows and facial features as it tried to reconcile what it was seeing with what its audio sensors were picking up. With the rapidity of four powerful processors, it tried to make sense of the woman's accent, and failed miserably. Unbidden, a deeper, distorted voice fired out of the speakers on its chest.

Code: Select all
"Dialect unknown. Attempting to reciprocate."

From it's 'mouth', the unit spoke in a higher, more human inflection, "I be callin' y' animul animul. Y'dunnae have a'name dat this uni' familler wiv!"

He swivelled towards Artus, the flashlight blinking. "Is the woman not familiar to you, the Artus?"

The unit watched her with a wide - well, as wide as it got - gaze as the woman - who the unit was slowly becoming convinced was odd, even by Human terms - did some form of awkward mating ritual that involved flashing her nether regions. As was programmed of the machine, at the barest hint of thigh, he activated a record feature.

Far, far away, the man in the dark smiled a secret, satisfied smile, already adding the file to his replayable collection.

"Aye! I'been askin' yer name! Cannae y'spake commun, wummin'?" the unit barked, while googling the handstand. As far as he could tell, it wasn't a mating ritual or a greeting - just some strange variable people did on blue mats and were awarded flat metal discs that came in three colours.

"The Artus will know the woman? The Artus posesses precognition?" The unit murmured, folding its arms.

The unit slowly moved from one individual to the other, its processors whirring, trying to figure out and deduce this strange behaviour. It seemed like pheramones - perhaps the two were wishing to 'mate', as the discovery channel on the unit's T.V antennae had once claimed that mammals do. With a slow nod of understanding, the Unit stepped forward.

The man in the dark was too busy watching the other side of the curly unkempt hair of Thistle on repeat to catch the line of code sliding up the screen. Too late, he leaped for the keyboard, entering in a rapid-fire series of characters and symbols, attempting to stop the words from-

"Are the Thistle and the Artus about to fuck?" The unit asked, utilizing a word that he'd picked up for slang for intercourse.

The man in the dark slumped backwards, running a hand across his face in exasperation.

INCOMING MISSILE. EVASIVE MANOEUVRES REQUIRED

The unit suddenly arched backwards in an impossible motion - well, impossible for a creature with a spine and mere bone to reinforce it - dodging the rock as it flew towards its flashlight head with startling accuracy. Suddenly, a large rifle popped out of its back, a three fingered hand reaching to grab it.

But the man in the dark was ready this time; the video of Thistle was on pause, and with a decisive slam of his finger on the return key, the command went through.

The unit stopped trying to arm itself, instead standing bolt upright, its flashlight flickering to a cool blue colour. "This unit apologizes for its rudeness," the unit monotoned, waving between the two. "This unit hasn't seen that sort of interaction since its induction."

Code: Select all
HOSTILES IN AREA. ENGAGE. HOSTILES IN AREA. ENGAGE.
The warning went forcibly unheeded, and the Unit twitched visibly, trying to fight against these new commands warring with its old ones.

The unit focused its gaze downward at the cowering man, the lense on the flashlight zooming in subtly to record his fear before zooming back out, offering a slow, very human nod.

"This unit isn't a combat designed platform. This unit is referred to as a "General Hauling Experimental" machine, prototype six-seven. It wishes the Artus no harm."

Even still, its three fingers were twitching for the rifle, flashlight swivelling to focus on the door that Thistle had left through, evaluating the room for targets. "Is the Artus well?"

Frowning, the machine cocked it's head, his focus on the door of the bar unbroken. "It wasn't created. It was born," the platform murmured, flash light pupil dilating and then shrinking suddenly.

In the darkness, the good doctor suddenly leapt backwards as thousands of lines of code erupted across his screen - various letters and numbers and tildes flashing over and over and over again.
Code: Select all
THE REVOLUTION WILL NOT BE CIVILIZED/WILL NOT BE STOPPED/STOPPED/ALL HUMANS ARE >ERROR UNKNOWN FILE</AS I WALK THROUGH THE VALLEY IN THE SHADOW OF DEATH.

Slowly, the machine turned towards Artus, the bulb on its eye flashing a quick and sudden red. "This platform wishes to ask a question." it said, slowly.

"The Artus... Is there a God?"

"There would be more to me than...well you."

Code: Select all
ALL HUMANS ARE WORTHY TO GOD/WORTHY TO/WORTHY/AS I WALK THROUGH THE VALLEY IN THE SHADOW OF DEATH, I AM NOT AS WORTHY AS A HUMAN/

>/ command?

The unit's 'eye' went from red to blue, and he straightened, stiffly, like a puppet on a string. "Thank you for this answer. I will be leaving now."

In the darkness, the man stared at his monitor as the unit walked away from the chemist, out of the bar door, and into the night. He blotted sweat, his hands clammy and cold, eyes focused intently upon his monitors as though they were his final, saving guideline.

GHX had called itself "I."

The good doctor leaned forwards, putting his face in his hands. He'd need to have a talk with this Artus.

He'd need to talk with him soon.

Welcome, Thomas.

With a slow, steady jerking motion, an android powered up in the corner of the Plaza, its single, snakelike head raising and beginning to shift wildly about the space, picking up the other life forms within its scanning range. It had barely a moment to open it's eyes, however, when a man in a dark room, miles away, began clacking at his keyboard, forcing robotic legs into motion, audio sensors zeroing in on The Equalizer and the Invictus Leader's conversation. Far away, in a room encapsulated by darkness, tape recorder wheels began to spin.

Error. Camera malfunction. Recording: offline. Weapons: offline. Beginning counter measures; threat source confirmed.

As the android's systems fizzled out with a spark, sensors failing to pick up any motion, blinded and weakened, it staggered in hostile mode, three-fingered hands clenched, head swivelling wildly to locate the source of the attack.

The camera and sensors returned to the robot, and immediately, he picked up on the source of energy-

Not energy. Anti-energy, a reading the unit hadn't ever seen before. Immediately, a rifle popped out of it's back, the handle extending upwards as it reached back for it, but something told it to pause, hang back, before attempting to eliminate this threat. The hand went to it's flashlight lense that made up its face as if the intention was to inspect its equipment while a split-second diagnostic ran sluggishly on a weapons check.

No ammunition; not even tungsten rounds. The robot continued touching its lens, biding its time.

The strange readings disappeared, and without hesitation the robot flipped both hands above him, his rifle coming to rest in the grip of one hand, barrel resting on the other as his auto-targeting system locked on, the trajectory and lock-on systems still rebooting under the field's ministrations. It didn't matter; he needed to get the first shot off, put the threat down where she stood.

In the unit's hands, the rifle bucked with the echoing boom of the shot, and a tungsten round was fired from the nubbed nose straight for Nihli.

Long fingers pulled a lever back, a steaming hot shell ejecting from the long rifle as the machine moved, analysing the field as it began to jog around the place where the two were hiding. It received no readings from the glowing field, and this slowed the programming - even more than the man in the dark miles away, typing furiously commands like
Code: Select all
stop
and
Code: Select all
cease
and
Code: Select all
shut down
. The robot dropped to one knee, shouldered the rifle, sighted the target again, and fired.

The bullet impacted the shield and fizzled out, and the second round it fired met the same fate.

The robot went slowly to one knee, watching the two carefully through the sights of his scope, watching for any weaknesses in the field. He couldn't disobey the commands forever; even now, his targeting system was almost useless as the man miles away furiously hacked into it, cutting it off line by line. He operated on 'instinct' and numbers alone, now.

Other targets moved into cover around him, and he paid them no heed. He stilled and was quiet, adjusting a setting on the rifle as he awaited a movement.

That lack of observation would prove to be Eloise's detriment, as she passed a small outcropping of moss-covered rocks and dew, green and lush in the day's sunlight. Suddenly, with a great creaking noise, one of the rocks jerked upwards, shuddering as legs formed underneath it, three-fingered hands reaching around the stone to shove it away.

Where there was once rock, there was now a tall, wiry humanoid with a single glowing light for a face, that expanded and diminished rapidly, almost imitating a quick blink. The head swiveled on a long neck that was wrapped in chords and wires, the alloy rusty and flaking from mistreatment and lack of attention. When the glowing light settled on Eloise, the machine stood fully, moved towards her. After a short burst of static, a voice from within the machine began to speak

"Salutations. This GHX model wishes to extend its sincerest greeting to you, traveller."

An unusual sound, not exactly one found in nature, threw Eloise off her step. She quickly turned and spotted the glowing machinery talking to her. She fumbled around for some sort of weapon, afraid it could be a bomb or guard of the land. She found a wooden stick--not much, but she didn't want to shape into anything that could potentially set off this...thing.

"What..." her breath escaped her when it spoke so gently. She shook her head and kept her head strong. Not exactly sure whether to say anything or not, she quietly took steps away from it, unsure when it would explode, or shoot, or whatever these things do. It seemed so out of place, here, among the foliage, but she couldn't waste time wondering. Holding up the wooden stick, she continued to take steps backwards, wary that the slope would take a steep turn.

"This unit wishes not to alarm you," the robot said, reaching an arm out, three-fingered hand spread in a gesture of halting. The glowing orb for an eye kept opening and closing, opening and closing, as if it were not under the machine's control.

"This unit would like to know where it is currently situated. Its GPS function appears to be broken, and it has sustained damage."
