Three Imperial warriors, the most elite of the Taiyou Empire sat on a ridge two miles from Noah's training spot. One spotter, one communications officer, and the third was watching Noah train through the crosshairs of the Taiyou SRS-3000AMR 30mm Anti-Materiel rifle.

He watched intently as Noah trained, honed his magical skills. The Warrior wasn't the least envious, but focused, displaying the icy focus that came with years of combat, and years of training that inevitably honed this Warrior's skill. A Cog in the Emperor's Machine he was ready to strike.

He made the necessary adjustments to his scope, and then he shifted slightly. All three Warriors hidden by a specialized pixellated nano-reflective cover that disguised them as little more than a snow drift. Hidden from prying eyes in orbit, and Aschen scanners, they lie in wait, ready to strike.

thump... thump... thump...

The Quiet meditation allowed the sniper to practically hear his own heartbeat. The order was given swiftly, and in between heart beats, the trigger was pulled.

What followed could be described as a terrible crack, but miles away it was heard as a dull sounding 'thoom' A Single 30mm High-Velocity Armor Piercing Fin Stabilized Diamond Tipped Depleted Uranium Magnetic Assisted Discard Sabot Kinetic Kill Vehicle seared towards it's target at a staggering 3,800 Feet per second.

It would take all of two seconds for this massive round to cross the distance between the sniper's rifle, and the target.

Dead center mass on Noah's torso.

'Look out!'

Meridia's snapped warning was the only thing that saved Noah's life. At least for now. He turned just as the Taiyou soldier fired, eyes widening at the deafening crack a split second before the bullet hit him. The turn had spared his vital organs, but the shot still struck a glancing blow. The teenager cried out in pain, dropping like a rock and skidding across the ice for a few feet as red began to blossom from his side. He lay where he fell, gasping in agony and clutching at the wound.

'Noah, you have to move. Noah, listen to me!'

Move? Noah found it hard enough to move with a sprained ankle. He'd never felt anything approaching this sort of pain before. He gritted his teeth, spreading his palm and calling on Pyrrhus. Meridia faded from his mind to be replaced with the blustery prideful elder dragon.

Any words that Pyrrhus had for him were lost on Noah's mind for the pain, focused only on one thing. He stretched his arm skywards and a burst of fire shot into the air, incandescently bright. A flare. He could only hope that help would come.

Breathing raggedly, he turned, pressing his hand to the ice and channelling heat into it. The ice melted, and he sank into it, disappearing from the view of the snipers.

The Taiyou sniper watched the red mist spray from his target, splattering all over the white backdrop of the snow. It was a barely glancing blow, his sudden turn caused the 30mm round to graze the skin, but the sheer kinetic energy and size of the round was still sufficient to take a fairly large chunk out of his abdomen, leaving a devastating gash and leaving pieces of flesh scattered about the snow.

The Spotter nodded and spoke.

"Seikō" The Spotter said, while the sniper pulled back the bolt, ejecting the massive hot case and letting it fall into the snow.

The Gunner nodded, and lined up for a second shot. "Switch to thermal." He thought, switching the view to thermal, causing Noah's outline and still hot blood to light up on the scope.

He lined up for a second shot, a new round chambered into the rifle.

Two bodies, too diminutive to be human rushed with surprising speed across the snow covered landscape, kicking powder into the air as they went. Vule and Nedra, two other Patronus had been out and about surveying for a site to mine and had heard the shot and seen the flare. They took cover behind a rocky outcropping relative to the direction they believed the shot came. ā€œHey!ā€, Vule said. ā€œWho is shooting from, where are they, and who is being shot at?ā€ ā€˜Donā€™t cheat. We have a bet.ā€™, she thought.

A mile away from the three members of Patronusā€¦

ā€œYou see the shooter?ā€, the warden whispered. The spotter indicated that he did not. They both started to scan. ā€œI see the targets and one was hit. Blood splatter indicates to our two oā€™clock. They look like civilians.ā€, the spotter whispered. They both shifted. ā€œI have no eyes on.ā€ ā€˜Give me a map EGO.ā€™ A map was displayed in her HUD. ā€œI would bet that the shooter is there.ā€ The map was displayed in the spotterā€™s HUD and the location marked. ā€œWe are not going to get a good shot from here. Cloak up. We are moving. EGO?ā€ ā€˜Audible triangulation indicates that you are correct.ā€™ EGO replied. Their images shimmered and they were gone. Prints in the snow formed as the two moved away.

Tessa was shoving wool blankets and supplies into packs back at her and Noah's temporary campsite when she heard the shot go off. Rynhart had requested she accompany Noah, not wanting the youth to be wandering the mountains alone, but given her talent for amplifying magical energies within her vicinity she had opted to keep her distance and remain at camp while Noah was off practicing over the nearby rise. They had been out there for a week now and were preparing to head back to the temple. A week too long to have known the danger that lay within the mountains.

There had been other casualties, other shootings, but in their remote region of the already remote mountains, Noah and Tessa hadn't yet returned to the temple to learn of the state of things. They had to learn that no one was to leave the temple anymore. That Taiyou snipers had everyone holed up, and the Patronus were as much a target as the Aschen they sheltered.

Abandoning the blanket and pack in hand she turned about towards the sound of the gunshot to see the flare fire off overhead. The dragon was unmistakably Noah's trademark, and who else would be out here in the middle of nowhere?

She took to the icy rocks at a run, calling for him as she cleared the top of the small rise in a few strides.

She was met with a spray of crimson across the pristine snow.

"Noah!" she shouted.

A quick scan of the surrounding mountains for the threat turned up nothing, but with miles upon miles of wilderness, the shooter could have been anywhere. Could still be there.

A quick incantation left her visually and audibly standing atop the rise while she made her way unseen down the snowy incline at a run to reach Noah's side. Snow and ice gave under her feet and she skidded the last of the way to him. The decoy attempt was rushed at best, but perhaps it would give pause - or at least draw attention long enough for her to reach Noah. Perhaps it would draw the Taiyou snipers' next shot before they took note of the tracks trudging through the snow to reach Noah.

Upon reaching Noah what she saw shocked her. Unconscious and nestled within a bed of crimson snow lay Noah. She was certain he must be dead, but she didn't take the time to check for signs of life as she fished a small crystal out of her pocket. She needed to break it though, and they were surrounded in a sea of snow. She swept her hand through the snow clearing the way to the ice that lay beneath before raising the crystal up to smash it down against the ice. Impromptu teleportation was never a good idea.

The small sniper team of Imperial warriors continued to lay hidden underneath a reactive camouflage netting. It wasn't exactly a therm-optical camouflage net, but a specialized nano reflective colored net that mimicked the snow and ice that surrounded them, and concealed them in white 'snow' that hid the men from visual, thermal, and most other means of detection.

"Hoka no wa ari." The spotter said, while the gunner adjusted his scope, spotting Tessa crouching besides Noah, and adjusting his weapon to bear aim on the small target that was her head.

He entered a state of cold meditation, and in the brief seconds that she prepared her spell, the single sniper adjusted his scope, focusing the cross-hairs on the black and white thermal image.

"Ute."

The trigger pulled, and the weapon barked it's furious report, sending a single High-Velocity 30mm round searing towards it's target. Tessa would likely be unfortunate enough to be struck by the deadly round before the sound of the gunshot even reached her. Should the round make it's target, it would impact square in the side of the head, liquefying brain and shattering bone, and leaving a deadly display of red splattered several feet across the snow

There was a brief silence, the Spotter's words echoing in the small encampment.

"Seikō"

The gunner pulled the bolt back, ejecting another steaming hot shell, which fell into the snow and cooled rapidly with an audible hiss, steam wafted off the barrel of this massive weapon, but only for a moment as the steel barrel cooled back down.

As the crystal shattered against the ice it unleashed the spell stored within it, and purple arcs of light lashed out splitting open a rift in the air as the second gunshot rang out. The brief flash of light vanished with an audible snap as the sniper struck true, and though Noah was gone, Tessa it would seem was less fortunate.

Sprawled motionless, the blood of the nineteen year old rapidly seeped into the snow to mingle with Noah's own.

ā€˜De er brikker i et sjakkspill. Hva legger vi verdsetter pĆ„ deres liv til Ć„ ikke gripe inn. Arenā€™t we cheating by just being here?ā€™, he thought and then bolted from cover with his round shield braced in his left hand and Vule running at his right side. ā€˜Stop complaining and letā€™s save the girl.ā€™, Vule thought in return as they both skidded to a stop in front of Tessa and between her and the Taiyou sniper team.

Vuleā€™s strong hands and arms hooked the girlā€™s under arms as her husband crouched and braced the metal shield with his body to provide cover for the other two. ā€œDvƶl lĆ”gt! Dvƶl lĆ”gt! DrĆfĆ°u!ā€, Nedra shouted.

The second shot sounded. 'Recalculating target location... one hundred seventy two meters. Negative LOS to target.', EGO relayed. "Move your ass.", the warden spoke over the communication net. The Varden sniper team moved up the side of a ridge putting the crest and some pines between them and the suspected target location.

The Sniper team watched the newcomers, and the Soldier adjusted his scope while the Spotter spoke up.

"Sarani ni tsu arimasu." He said calmly, and the gunner nodded.

Considering his targets, he meditated on the outlines on his thermal scope. Shifting slightly he nodded, with a fresh round chambered into his weapon, he considered his target.

"Ute." The Spotter said, while the gunner made the adjustments to his scope. He lined up the first target, Nedra, and the giant metal shield he was covering behind.

The Gunner depressed the trigger of the massive Taiyou SR-3000AMR And the weapon barked it's fierce report, hurling a 30mm High-Velocity Armor Piercing Fin Stabilized Diamond Tipped Depleted Uranium Discard Sabot bullet. The metal projectile traveled at a staggering hypersonic velocity which meant the bullet would reach it's target a second before the sound of gunfire did.

The round was easily capable of cutting slap through most conceivable armors, from half inch thick nanosteel, to reinforced Kanvium. Indeed to defeat this round, the Shield would have to be as dense as a starship hull, and as hard as tungsten. Which meant the Specialized round would likely cut through the shield, and ultimately the figure hiding behind it, causing the same unfortunate fate as Tessa, a dead center mass shot from a summit two miles away.

There was silence, as the bolt pulled back, ejecting the casing, and sliding in yet another round. Two more bullets before the sniper had to change magazines.

----

The Taiyou Sniper team engaged without mercy, of course as the Varden made their approach, Zeroing in on Taiyou positions, they would move unaware of the Minefield that was erected in a radius around the Taiyou position, each mine containing a powerful fragmentation charge, as well as a brightly colored paint that was designed to reveal any cloaked units for engagement, as well as notify the Sniper team of approaching enemies. Each mine carefully hidden under a layer of snow and ice, armed with a grid 20 feet around the mine of small sensors that detected weight, and triggered the explosion, should the Varden team continue to approach the Taiyou sniper team, they would no doubt set off one of these mines.

The 30mm high-velocity, armor piercing, fin stabilized, diamond tipped, uranium discard sabot round impacted the shield which was not as thick as a starship hull but a bit harder than tungsten over all. It hit center mass as the shooter intended. The shield that Nedra now used for cover was primarily composed of Titanium, layered with thin sheets of Tungsten Carbide that had been dipped in liquid Graphene, spun and allowed to dry. The composite material would have stopped the round without the shieldā€™s enchantment but it would have likely splintered the Graphene coating and shattered the Tungsten Carbide plates. The Titanium core would not have been strong enough alone to stop a single round.

The front of the shield lit as if set ablaze the moment the round impacted. Before the shieldā€™s face snow turned to water which quickly turned to jets of steam. Dirt glassed over and solid stone became viscous red hot molten rock as the kinetic energy of the round was converted into a frontal cone of heat the worth of a blast furnace. Nedra took a single step back.

ā€œShe is dead!ā€, Vule shouted. ā€œLetā€™s move!ā€, Nedra shouted in reply. The two started to move back to cover. Vule dragged Tessa and Nedra provided cover with a shield that looked much more worse for the hit it had just endured.

The Sniper growled watching the spectacle unfold in front of him. The Spotter wasn't happy either.

"Kan nani!" The Spotter snapped, and the gunner racked the bolt, chambering another weapon. "Idō shimashou ā€‹ā€‹, nani ga watashitachi no pojishon ga kiken ni sarasa rete koroshite imasen." The Sergeant called out, still concealed under the reactive Nano-camouflage. In the maelstrom of the storm, the thundering song of the engines from a Sudden transport cracked through the storm, touching down just outside the Sniper's position, listing and being blown about by the wind.

"Sā! Anata ga sai haichi sa reru yo!" An Imperial Warrior shouted hanging out of the Sudden Transport. The three men in the Sniper team moving quickly to dismantle the large weapon platform, while the wind whipped at their fortifications.

"Yakkyō o atsumete, kono su o fuku." The Commander ordered from the Sudden Transport. Two Imperial warriors began to rig a bomb to the fortifications, while the Sniper team filed to the Sudden Transport.

One hundred meters from the Taiyou positionā€¦

The mountain winds howled as another shot sounded. ā€˜Recalculating target locationā€¦ one hundred one meters. Negative LOS to target. Incoming transport. Magnometrics detects the presence of personnel mines to the front.ā€™, EGO replayed the information. The HUD lit up. A thin patch of pines was all that separated the Varden sniper team and the target's location. They moved up, the sniper took a knee, and raised the VP22. He leveled the weapon on a pine and fired a single shot even as the other warden ducked behind another nearby tree. The trigger was pulled, the sniper de-cloaked, and the thorium barb exited the barrel at just under the speed of light, slightly less than 281,804,919 meters a second. The rifleā€™s report was more like the crack of thunder than the traditional sound of gunfire.

The base of the pine shattered and lit on fire. The tree behind that did the same. A tree thirty meters from the second did likewise. The barb, now a ball of super-heated plasma continued on, exiting the forest. It traveled another three miles before boring a kilometer through a mixture of gravel, ore, and rock that composed a nearby mountain.

Trees fell and mines exploded, clearing a portion of the forward path. The spotter, wielding a VP14, and still cloaked, dashed forward. The sniper rose, the PDSā€™s cloak re-engaging. ā€˜LOS.ā€™, EGO displayed on the HUD and identified targets. ā€œEnemy sighted.ā€, said the spotter over the net. He raised the assault rifle and looked down the weaponā€™s hard sights, squeezing off three charge bursts as he moved forward, his cloak inactive. Super-heated Thorium plasma contained in short lived magnetic fields crossed the distance at the same speed as the barb out of the sniper rifle to damage, maim, and kill the Taiyou and/or their equipment as both wardens moved up, starting to bound forward. "MMC02 this is ST05 Patronus requesting reinforcements and close precision orbital strike at location to be marked. Civilian casualties caused by Taiyou force. We are engaging.", the sniper communicated with EGO transmitting the missing grid coordinates. The reply came almost immediately. "ST05 Patronus this is MMC02 reinforcements are inbound. Negative on close precision orbital strike at this time. Interceptor, HAV, and DS support inbound. ETA is two microns."

The Sniper's round seared towards the Taiyou position, by the time they had come up on them, though. The Taiyou had buttoned up in the Sudden Transport, which had engaged shields, reverse-engineered Aschen Hard-light shields augmented by a Nanoscreen which angled the shot just a few degrees off and away, causing it to sear off in a wayward direction.

The Taiyou soldiers in the door quickly returned fire, their weapons barking at the origin of the gunfire, wave-force rifles barking their report, which was more of a rattle from rapidly expanding air as the blue bolts of energy seared towards the Varden snipers.

"Wareware wa hi no shita ni shite iru!" The Pilot shouted, before keying his comms.

"Attention unidentified forces, this is an Imperial Taiyou Operation, if you continue to prosecute this transport it will be deemed as an act of war, and we will prosecute you and your nation to the fullest extent of our Military capabilities, cease and decist immediately." The warning was broadcast while the Imperial sniper team filed into the Sudden Transport, as it slowly lifted off, additional shots pinging against it's shields and deflecting off into a random direction.

One soldier had been wounded in the crossfire, and he was pulled into the bowels of the Taiyou transport, the young Taiyou commander grabbing the railing. "Yukuyuku! Watashitachi o koko kara deteike!" He called out, the Pilot unaware if the Shields could take a sustained engagement, Sudden Transports afterall weren't designed to fight.

Immediately to the east, a pair of Taiyou Jigabachi AV Attack helicopters approached the scene, their wasp-like appearance and white refractive paint job made them difficult to spot in the foggy and stormy maelstrom. However with the discharge of weapons, the Jigabachi pair were moving quickly to engage.

"Mokuhyō miryoku, hakken shimashita." The Pilot said, and the pair of Helicopters passed over the Varden before pointing their tails which bore a 25mm vulcan cannon.

"Attention unknown forces, Disengage or we will prosecute you as enemies of the Empire." The Messages rang clear in Basic.

'Thorium charges ineffective. Recommend switching to anti-matter charges.', EGO communicated through the sniper team's HUD. The Varden snipers took cover as the Taiyou returned fire, avoiding the full brunt of the Taiyou's return of fire. A few blue bolts were haulted by the PDS aura shields. At the arrival of the pair of Jigabachi the two wardenā€™s took cover and allowed the PDSā€™s to re-initiate their cloak as they switched out their ammunition for something that would have a better chance at penetrating the sudden transportā€™s shields.

ā€˜Thon units coming on grid. ETA 13 microts. Linking up with drone AI to coordinateā€¦ā€™, EGO replayed. For those interested in knowing a microt is slightly longer than a second, about 1.3 seconds. The sniper broke cover, turning out to the right of the pine he had previously been taking cover behind. A very faint blue outline surrounded him as he raised the V22 to take aim at one of the Jigabachi pilots.

Multiple sonic booms erupted from the cloud cover above as four Thon interceptor drones skated down and through the atmosphere. In space these drones moved nearly 9.5 kilometers a second. In the atmosphere they moved nearly five times the speed of sound, around 1,800 meters a second. They came in at a wide arc, now approaching from fifty kilometers away. If they had not done so their sheer speed would have caused them to just crash into the ground.

They had no clear front of back as they skipped and turned in the air like a flat stone thrown across a placid lake. They would close half the distance in slightly less than those 13 microts previously explained. At twenty five kilometers each would emit pin-point disruptors targeting the sudden transportā€™s FTL and jump drives if it possessed such technology. When they came within a range of twenty kilometers each would project a micro-energy net to suspend the sudden transport's and the pair of Helicopter's movement and anchor them in space relative to the rotation of certain celestial bodies.

Each Thon would pass close and then pinwheel out as if they were boomerangs that had been thrown. At the closest point each would open up with 30mm repeating blaster cannons, firing twenty charges of super-heated tungsten plasma, contained in magnetic fields, and traveling at damn close to the speed of light. The sound was deafening and terrible, shaking the bones of the two snipers on the ground even through their PDSā€™s formidable shield and armor systems. Two of the seven meter long Thons would target the sudden transport and the other two would turn their guns on the two Jigabachi, multiple advanced AIs guiding each shot and the droneā€™s flight trajectory. ā€œDanger close!ā€, the spotter shouted as his teeth rattled in his head. If these were drones the question begs to be asked. What had launched them?

The Pilots of the sudden transport were working a quick escape. With no response to their hostile challenge the intention was clear, these new adversaries were showing them no mercy.

"Wareware wa Aschen wa Vu~āden to shite shikibetsu suru mono ni jūji shite kita kantai o tsūchi shimasu. Bittosutorīmukōdekku o sōshin shimasu."

Both Imperial warriors nodded, before they prepared their explosive vests and the High-yield nuke in the Sudden transport, the Nuclear warhead contained within a distortion field, making it's radio-logical signature undetectable. All while a full coded briefing was beamed up to the Nagato, the flagship of the Imperial Taiyou Navy. This new information would allow the Admiral to reformulate his tactics, and switch hi approach, everything from Guncam footage, to feeds from the transport.

"Sore wa ten'nō ni tsukaeru meiyo sa rete imasu!" They called out. "Watashitachiha, seitoshi no naka de kare ni tsukaeru!"'

"Tennoheika! Banzai!"

The men shouted their response, as high powered rounds peppered the nanosteel hull of the Sudden transport, crippling it but not destroying it, the sheer power of the rounds causing them to pass through with little damage to the transport itself.

"Banzai!"

"Tennoheika Banzai!"

"Banzai!"

The Sudden Transport Pilot got on the comms once again to try and communicate with the Varden.

"Please! we have wounded on board! We surrender!"

He then grinned. "Tennoheika Banzai."

The Thon units spun off, swooping in for another pass, holding fire, and spinning off again as the Taiyou sudden transport pilot attempted to communicate. ā€˜Thor unit coming on grid. Officer on grid. Evaluating current situationā€¦ Scanning enemy unitsā€¦ Anomaly detectedā€¦ Advice immediate destruction or containment of enemy units based on past Taiyou encounter data. Dispatching SITREP to SOL STAT. Awaiting orders from on grid commander. Lieutenant Commander Ava Bowen taking command.ā€™ EGO relayed and displayed across multiple HUDs.

Two all-purpose drones swooped in in similar fashion to the Thon units. The frigate sized MBC, Mobile Battle Center descended from the clouds where the Thon units had broken the cloud cover, closing within thirty kilometers of the sudden transport. ā€œST05 Patronus this is MBC01 Patronus. Blink off close grid. Over.ā€, transmitted Lieutenant Commander Bowen. ā€œMBC01 Patronus this is ST05 Patronus. Rodger. Out.ā€, replied the sniper. ā€˜Blink LOS. Three, two, one, jumpingā€¦ā€™, EGO displayed on the sniper teamā€™s HUD. The sniper teamā€™s cloak dissipated just before the space that they occupied stretched and boiled. A nimbus of bright light engulfed them and shot in the direction of a nearby mountain a little less than five kilometers away. ā€˜Have the APDs initiate ultra/infrasonic non-lethal and then capture and contain protocol on all identified Taiyou targets on grid.ā€™, thought Ava.

ā€˜Initiating UISW and CCP on identified Taiyou targets on grid.ā€™, relayed EGO. Two of the Thon units rushed back in and inverted their Aura fields to contain the sudden transport as the two all-purpose drones blasted the fieldā€™s interior with ultra and infra sonic waves that would incapacitate most humans that were exposed to the resonating notes. Since the blaster charges had penetrated the shielding, armor, and hull of the sudden transport and the two helicopters it stood to reason that the ultra/infrasonic weapon would now do so easily. The other two Thon units attempted to contain the two Jigabachi. ā€œHostile Taiyou force. You are being contained for search and capture. Any hostile action will result in your immediate destruction. Any further attempt at escape will result in your immediate destruction.ā€, the Lieutenant Commander transmitted to the Taiyou though it was unlikely that any of the pilots, crew, or passengers had remained conscious.

Unbroken guiding lasers shot from each Thon unit as they engaged tractors to tow the Taiyou units. The two APDs started to cut through the sudden transportā€™s outer hull to gain entry. ā€œMMC02 this is MBC01 Patronus requesting Wielder Core support.ā€, Bowen transmitted.

Commander Yusuke Kobayashi stared at the distress beacon being broadcast from the downed sudden transport. He turned to several white clad bridge officers then he nodded. "Target for saturation bombardment." He said turning back to his command chair, while the 700 meter long Taiyou ship moved to engage, positioning itself to bear guns at the icy mountains below.

"All guns commence fire." He ordered.

The Kongo brought it's 250mm deck guns to bear, along with it's 30cm Bombardment cannons. After a brief pause, brilliant yellow plumes belched from the cannons, the three other Kongo Class ships followed suit, engaging the surface with a sustained orbital bombardent, though without precision targeting, the Bombardment was broad and visually targeted around the mountains.

The Non-lethal ultrasonic 'noise' caused the men in the sudden Transport to pass out from the strange noise, while those in the Jigabachis had already killed themselves, detonating their suicide vests causing the helicopters to spin out of control and land in the snow in a loud crash. That wasn't the first to transpire. With the Transport now silent, several flashes of yellow cut through the clouds, before a deafening shriek filled the mountains.

In Orbit, Taiyou ships readied their weapons.

A Series of deafening booms followed, as brilliant fireballs mushroomed into the sky, clearing wind, cloud, and snow in all direction and cratering entire ridges. One after another. Streaks of yellow erupted into brilliant flashes of light and deafening, thunderous roar. 150Kt Tactical nuclear ordinance erupted all around the Varden ships, radiation and hot blast wind moved through the mountains as shell after shell impacted the mountains. The Thons and other Varden units would be hard pressed to evade such a saturating bombardment.

Directly above Vule and Nedra, a 250mm Anti-Ship shell careened from the sky, roaring and screaming it's report as it seared directly towards the pair from the skies. A Sheer coincidence that the shell would happen to land here. 500 feet above them it detonated into nuclear fire, starting with a brilliant flash of light, and a nuclear shock wave expanding out in all directions. However the Thon with the Sudden transport was only slightly outside the blast radius. However it had to contend with the smaller 150mm Shells that rained down on them from orbit.

Twenty minutes went by, and the Bombardment ceased, leaving what was a pristine mountain range, little more than smoldering, charred craters, mushroomy fireballs rising up into the sky.
