Invoker; The Arsenal Magus

So begins a new age of knowledge.

a character in “The Multiverse”, as played by Questionable Object

Description

In its earliest, and some would say most potent form, magic was primarily the art of memory. It required no technology, no wands or appurtenances other than the mind of the magician. All the trappings of ritual were merely mnemonic devices, meant to allow the practitioner to recall in rich detail the specific mental formulae that unlocked a spell's power. The greatest mages in those days were the ones blessed with the greatest memories, and yet so complex were the invocations that all wizards were forced to specialize. The most devoted might hope in a lifetime to have adequate recollection of three spells—four at most. Ordinary wizards were content to know two, and it was not uncommon for a village mage to know only one—with even that requiring him to consult grimoires as an aid against forgetfulness on the rare occasions when he might be called to use it. But among these early practitioners there was one exception, a genius of vast intellect and prodigious memory who came to be known as the Invoker. In his youth, the precocious wizard mastered not four, not five, not even seven incantations: He could command no fewer than ten spells, and cast them instantly. Many more he learned but found useless, and would practice once then purge from his mind forever, to make room for more practical invocations. One such spell was the Sempiternal Cantrap—a longevity spell of such power that those who cast it in the world's first days are among us still (unless they have been crushed to atoms). Most of these quasi-immortals live quietly, afraid to admit their secret: But Invoker is not one to keep his gifts hidden. He is ancient, learned beyond all others, and his mind somehow still has space to contain an immense sense of his own worth...as well as the Invocations with which he amuses himself through the long slow twilight of the world's dying days.

Invoker's magics revolve around the manipulation of orbs; Quas, Wex and Exort.

Image
Quas
Allows manipulation of ice elements. Each Quas instance provides increased health regeneration.
The orbs of Quas take the appearance of swirling self contained maelstroms of ice. As well as using the Orbs to Invoke spells he can use them to heal himself of wounds and harden his body with surprising strength and fortitude.

Image
Wex
Allows manipulation of storm elements. Each Wex instance provides increased attack speed and movement speed.
The orbs of Wex take the appearance of balls crackling purple electricity. As well as using the Orbs to Invoke spells he can use them to give himself considerable speed in both his attacks and movements as well as impressive agility and dexterity.

Image
Exort
Allows manipulation of fire elements and grants a permanent intelligence bonus. Each Exort instance provides increased attack damage.
The orbs of Exort take the form of balls of fire like tiny self contained suns. As well as using the Orbs to Invoke spells he can use the orbs to give himself a ranged fireball basic attack, throwing balls of magical flame about the size of a tennis ball that have the same force of impact as a tennis ball sized ball of steel and will catch flammable objects alight.

Image
Invoke
Combines the properties of the elements currently being manipulated, creating a new spell at the Invoker's disposal. The invoked spell is determined by the combination of Quas, Wex and Exort.

Invoker can invoke up to ten unique spells, having two immediately available at a time.

Quas, Quas, Quas
Cold Snap
Ability invokes if Invoker has three Quas instances. Invoker draws the heat from an enemy, chilling them to their very core.
Causes the temperature around Invoker's target to drop dramatically causing ice to form and movements to become painful, severely weakening most water and fire elementals, during the time that Cold Snap is in effect, blows dealt against the target cause significant pain when applicable.

Quas, Quas, Wex
Ghost Walk
Ability invokes if Invoker has two Quas and one Wex instances. Invoker manipulates the ice and electrical energies around him, rendering his body invisible. The elemental imbalance created as a consequence slows nearby enemies.
Invoker becomes invisible to the naked eye and in cold places, the infra red eye as well as he draws the heat from the area around him, making movement difficult with the freezing cold.

Quas, Quas, Exort
Ice Wall
Ability invokes if Invoker has two Quas and one Exort instances. Generates a wall of solid ice.
The wall of ice is anywhere between a meter to ten meters high and four to forty long, the ice permeates a field of crippling cold and is covered in razor shard shards of ice that can cut through anything less than steel like paper though even metals will become extremely cold upon contact with the wall, dropping far below freezing temperatures, easily enough to freeze most sources of liquid fuel.

Wex, Wex, Wex
EMP

Ability invokes if Invoker has three Wex instances. Invoker builds up a charge of electromagnetic energy at a targeted location which automatically detonates after a duration.
The unstable magical energies are able to strip most magical effects and electronics of power unless they are heavily protected.

Wex, Wex, Quas
Tornado

Ability invokes if Invoker has two Wex and one Quas instances. Unleashes a fast moving tornado that picks up enemy units in its path, suspending them helplessly in the air shortly before allowing them to plummet to their doom.
The tornado can travel anywhere from a couple of meters in front of the Invoker to nearly one hundred, the tornado growing larger the further it travels from the invoker, growing large enough to tear up trees at it's furthest from the Invoker.

Wex, Wex, Exort
Alacrity

Ability invokes if Invoker has two Wex and one Exort instances. Invoker infuses an ally with an immense surge of energy.
If the target is biological they are imbued with great speed and strength, able to strike powerful blows swiftly. If the target is mechanical and runs off of an electrical source they are overcharged, giving the same benefits but often having the side effect of electrifying meaning those that come in direct contact with it are electrocuted.

Exort, Exort, Exort
Sun Strike

Ability invokes if Invoker has three Exort instances. Sends a catastrophic ray of fierce energy at any targeted location, incinerating all enemies standing beneath it.
Despite it's name Invoker can use this spell at any time of day or night. The Sun Strike strikes with such force and heat that it scorches the ground around the target, searing the ground and making it scorching hot to stand upon the brightness of the blast also effectively blinds anyone within the blast radius that survives it.

Exort, Exort, Quas
Forged Spirits

Ability invokes if Invoker has two Exort and one Quas instances. Invoker forges a spirit embodying the strength of fire and fortitude of ice.
The spirits appear as molten elementals of earth and metal, their skull like faces and clawed hands made of blackened steel, they spit molten metal at foes with enough heat to melt steel and their touch is scorching.

Exort, Exort, Wex
Chaos Meteor

Ability invokes if Invoker has two Exort and one Wex instances. Invoker pulls a flaming meteor onto the targeted location. Upon landing, the meteor rolls forward.
The Invoker summons a flaming ball of rock, varying in size that if it is of a smaller size will crash into the ground then roll forwards, leaving a flaming path in its wake, if the meteor is of a larger persuasion it will instead explode on impact, leaving behind a flaming crater and sending burning debris in all directions.

Quas, Wex, Exort
Deafening Blast.

Ability invokes if Invoker has one Quas, one Wex and one Exort instances. Invoker unleashes a mighty sonic wave in front of him, dealing damage to any enemy it collides with. The sheer impact from the blast is enough to knock those enemies back with enough force to daze them.
Deafening Blast creates a thunderous boom which will often discombobulate those it collides with or are in the immediate vicinity of its casting, the wave can have enough force to do anything from daze basic unprotected humans to shatter stone depending on the amount of force the Invoker puts behind the blast.

The Invoker also has a wide variety of magical weapons and artifacts at his disposal, expanding his repertoire of lethal spells.

Dagon:
A wand made of black metal with a red crystal set in its tip that can shoot black and red lightning.

Force Staff:
A simple stick inlaid with jade with the power to propel the user forward a short distance without harm, regardless of any terrain that may be blocking their path.

Eul's Scepter of Divinity:
A white staff with the ability to wreath someone in protective or disabling winds.

Scythe of Vyse:
A small sickle with a jagged blade of mint crystal. Commonly known as a "Sheep Stick" it has the power to turn most people into some form of livestock for a short period of time.

Ethereal Sceptre:
A small green sceptre with the capable of turning someone ethereal making them immune to physical harm but amplifying the damage they take from magical strikes.

Rod of Atos:
A silver and red wand with the power to give an enemy crippling arthritis for a short period, making movement difficult.

So begins...

A single man, obviously a magus, draped in gaudy robes and holding an air of superiority about him, his robes of purple and white buffeting in the wind, trinkets and artifacts hidden beneath his runed robes being revealed for split seconds as the wind twirls about him, stepped through the main gateway of the "esteemed" academy, a pair of milky white eyes, looking unamusedly down a sharp nose, surveying the courtyard full of magic students with a disdainful expression.
He stepped forward into the courtyard, striding past students drawing the attention of several students and teachers about the area, a teacher approaching him to ask what he was doing on the premises.
"I, The Grand Arsenal Magus, Invoker was led to believe that this... School, was an Academy of great renown, where even those schooled in the arts of the great magics may learn and hone their art. But it seems that I was deceived, for all I see about me are children learning but the most basic cantrips and tutors who do not even seem to comprehend the scope of the power they are wielding..." The sharply featured man crossed his arms and looked about him once more, a rather large amount of people now staring at him, some with confusion others with irritance. "What? Do you think yourselves better than me?! I am an immortal who has been honing his powers in the magical arts since the worlds were young! I am older than some fundamentals! But I will not stop you... If you wish to duel me then so be it... But I warn you I will not hold back! In fact..." Invoker raised a hand pointing at someone at the back of the crowds. "You there! Ragged old wizard! You look like one who has seen many decades though they have not treated you as kindly as I, perhaps you have the power to face me?!"

The crowd within the walls of the academy was truly bustling with young students just learning how to form their spells for the very first time. Many of the teachers and masters who were moving about the court simply glanced at each other, some feeling a bit agitated at the newcomer and his boastful claims. Berthas however could only smile as the newcomer pointed him out in the back. It was as if destiny truly was calling for the elderly gentleman to step up for any challenge that he saw fit, even if the odds were against him.

"Young man." Berthas tightened his grip on his staff and with his other hand ran his fingers across the brim of his rather magnificently mammoth sized cap just to then chuckle at the current situation that was at hand. "You mock these students and their teachers due to one fact simply because you have forgotten the very principles that the arcane is based upon." The old man raised his staff up a bit only to slam it on the ground allowing those around him to watch as it transformed into a hundred butterflies that fluttered off in all directions. "I shall be the one to school you and show you that any one of these mages, scholars at their finest I might add, would be able to spark a bit of respect in such a cold heart."

The old gentleman looked at two of the teachers who quickly moved the students back allowing the two contestants the space they needed to cast and call upon the archaic energies that were sewn into the fabric of reality. "I am Berthas Ignias Hoarercrux. Keeper of what knowledge I see fit and master wizard. I will allow you to have the first move."

"Foolish old man." The Invoker growled as raised his head and held his arms out at his sides, three orbs, two broiling spheres of flame and one a self contained maelstrom of ice, appeared above his head, circling the magus as a pattern of light appeared around his feet a flash of raw power lighting up in his cold eyes. "I was present when magic was naught but the art of making light and shadow dance for amusement! I am older than the stone this academy was carved from! And I have the power tom summon maelstroms from the palm of my hand, tear meteors from the sky and rend my foes asunder with nothing but the air they breath!"
The Arsenal Magus made a motion as though pulling something up from the ground, a pair of flaming elemental beings bursting forth from the ground at his feet, their flesh made of molten stone and their arms and faces made of blackened metal, where their legs would be simply tapering off into a ragged molten tail, not quite touching the ground as they hovered in place, crackling with heat and energy.
"I can create life from naught and burn the energy from my foes veins without a thought! The sun itself obeys my command!!" Invoker thrust his hand forwards in the direction of the wizened wizard as the orb of ice exploded into a ball of flame and the light once more flashed at his feet, a thunderous roar and a blinding light pouring into the courtyard as a beam of concentrated light raced down from the sky headed straight for Bigsby, the two elementals whipping into action as well and spitting a molten bolt of rock in his direction with a gurgling hiss.

Berthas listened to the other speak only to keep his smile and watch the demonstration of power. It was interesting to say the least but not unheard of for others to show themselves off in front of others as if power was truly the only form of currency in the world. For Berthas however power was something only achieved through long hours of study and arduous amounts of reading over old musty tomes that spoke of long forgotten spells and alternate histories that have or had already been. It was when the first orb rushed towards him that the elderly wizard rushed into action as he gave several strange gestures and allowed words of power to escape past his lips that his body began to shift and phase in and out of the realm of Mundus and into the ethereal plane. The old wizards form shimmered from existance leaving himself a phantom of what he once was allowing the spells to fly off through him and change their very fabric into something else entirely as Berthas came back to the material plane. As the second attack came at the old wizard however he simply threw his arms up high sending a torrent of ice cold water up around him sending the molten bolts up high and turning into obsidian due to the sudden change of temperature.

"Vex and Rend!" The old wizard shouted as the obsidian shards that flew up into the sky shattered into a thousand pieces just to swirl and form into a splintered short spear that held itself high in the air until Berthas threw his hands forward sending the spear hurtling towards the evoker.

The elementals began to lumber forward, continuing to spit and hiss at the elder wizard as he avoided and deflected the attacks, the Invoker himself reaching into his robes and grasping something his body turning a sickly translucent green allowing the spear to simply pass through his body as though it were made of nothing but mist, the orbs circling his body fading away then reappearing, two taking the form of crackling spheres of electricity and one returning to being an orb of swirling ice, the light sparking once more at his feet as he returned to the physical realm throwing his hand forward with a powerful gust of wind, a miniature tornado, easily four meters high raced forward towards Bigsby, the orb of ice changing once more this time to a third crackling ball of energy, and with another pattern of energy at the Invoker's feet a ball of steadily condensing energy formed before the elder wizard, almost obscured by the swirling pillar of wind racing towards him, the Invoker with his eyes of pure white and his face locked in an expression of determination changed his orbs a third time to one of each kind, one of energy, fire and ice, ready to cast yet another spell whilst awaiting the wizards next move.

"Forvien estervex numaras!" Bigsby quickly shouted as the winds rushed towards him only to find themselves being diverted as a much larger vortex took hold and surrounded the old wizard who simply began to kneel down and place his right hand upon the ground beneath him and smirked as the dueling area began to shimmer as multiple runes began to appear on the ground before the two. "Numenex calid mortep..." Berthas muttered along with a few more incantations as the energy in the air began to crackle while he remained behind the defensive winds he conjured along with the strange runes that glowed beneath underfoot.

Slowly Berthas sits down and dismisses the wind wall he conjured just to then smile as he could clearly see the other duelist just to then touch one of the many close by runes that now littered the floor before them and began to alter the ebb and flow of the arcane energies around them. "Now in the name of some of my old favorites from back in my day may I present to you a rather interesting modification." Berthas now with his other hand reached for his spell component pouch and produced several small bags of sulfur which began to change and alter its form into five long rods shaped like dragons with painted wings and opened maws of dragon visages. "Snap Dragon Fireworks." It was with those final words that the five fireworks that came into being shot off from out of his hands taking on fiery massive forms of multicolored dragons with gaping maws all rushing towards Invoker with deadly precision.

"What a fascinating cantrip!" The Arsenal Magus exclaimed as the ball of flame hovering around his head imploded into a second ball of ice the light about his feet flashing once more as he faded from sight, taking with him the heat in the air around him, sucking the heat from the fireworks as they raced towards his most recent location.
Almost exactly as the Invoker vanished the crackling ball of energy exploded releasing a wave of unstable magical energy, destabilizing the magical energies around it and tearing up many of the runes on the ground and washing over the wizards barrier, stripping it of energy.
"Perhaps I shall entertain you with a few of my own!" The mage thrust one hand forward, sending forth a wave of compressed air towards Bigsby with a thunderous boom, with his other hand, drawing a wand made of black metal with a red crystal set in its tip, pointing it at the wizard a bolt of red lightning tearing out of the tip towards the wizened man with a cacophonous crackle.
The three orbs above the Invokers head all turned to ice as he invoked yet another spell, thrusting his hand forth once more drawing the warmth from the air around the wizard a layer of ice creeping along the ground and his robes, a chill attempting to creep down into hi bones.
"Learn how fragile you are!"

The old wizard had raised his massive wizards cap a bit higher just to offer a look of surprise as the chain of events began to unfold before him. The compressed ball of wind smashed right towards the wizard sending him tumbling back upon his back only to be accompanied by a shocking situation as arcane lighting that the evoker conjured from his wand just to wrack his body with electrical jolts. As the elderly gentleman began to recover from the previous two assaults he was accosted yet again as the air around him began to freeze ever so slightly. The old wizard's cap began to grow cold and so did his skin and bones began to shift and strain from the sudden assault.

Berthas stood himself straight only to chuckle as his massive cap fell from atop his head revealing his balding head and crystal sapphire orbs for eyes just to smile as he began to fall apart before his competitor. "Witness how easily fooled you are as I.....as I...." Berthas began to stutter as his words ran cold due to part of his face cracking off and hitting the floor shattering. All who were watching the duel began to gasp and even some grew dull as they began to feel a bit sorry for the loss of the elderly man. It was when one person took a step forward to inspect the scene a bit closer that the cold body of the wizard hit the floor and shattered into a thousand pieces that shuttered and vibrated turning into a thousand moths that began to swarm the dueling area and took on the form of Berthas along with an addition of his staff in hand. The fiery orb that sat atop of his tool began to emit a fiery aura that appeared to be a visible blue flame. "Now as I was saying." Berthas spoke with a bit of confidence that some would have lost just to raise his staff high up above his head just to then slam it back down onto the earth bellow. Its affects created multiple clones of the old wizard, each running their fingers across the brims of their hats while some prepared a few strange spells. "Prepare to be schooled by a master of the arts." Berthas finally spoke as he took a step forward and brought the fiery end of the orb upon his staff across the sky altering the grounds before them as the illusion he began to weave took affect on the world around them.

The Invoker laughed triumphantly as the old man collapsed to the ground but fell silent as he burst into a swarm of insects and reformed into the old man, once more standing before him unharmed, his eyes silently flicking between the clones of Bigsby, a scowl forming on the Invoker's face.
"So... You have proven to be more of a challenge then I first took you for. Good." The orbs around his head changed twice, each time a flash of light drawing a spell from the arcanery for the Arsenal Magus. He pulled forth a pair of fresh elementals from the earth, the fiery beasts growling with the heat of the lava that made up their flesh, and the Invoker's hands lit up with a fire as a lattice of ethereal metal containing a pink energy appeared above his head, the orbs changing again from two balls of energy and one of fire to two of fire and one of energy, the Invoker's eyes lighting up bright as he invoked his third spell. "I was afraid you wouldn't be a match, I'd hate to see one as old and seemingly learned as himself embarrassed. Though really, it is an honor... To challenge me."
The mage made a motion of pulling something down, the sky alighting with fire as a ball of fire and earth appeared in the sky, hurtling towards the elder wizard and his clones, the Invoker invoking his ball of energy once more, summoning it amidst the Bigsbys.
Invoking again his tornado and sending it hurtling at the group as he sicced his elementals on the group and launched several small fireballs from his hands at the two Bigsbys nearest to him.
"The skies will set you aflame!"

The clones that were hit would shatter like glass shards and fly away as those shards transformed into butterflies and moths. Other copies of the old man began to mutter incantations while raising or lowering their stave's while giving arcane gestures of old. Columns of earth would shoot up before the two casters so that the fire above would be met with the shattering power of the earth bellow and shattering the fiery balls into small shards that would fall harmlessly down to the earth. The spiraling winds would seem to calm themselves but as things began to heat up some of the butterflies formed yet another clone behind the evoker who Bigsby was facing just to hide the fact that it was nothing more than a pillar covered in runes that emanated a rather loud hum. "As I recall you were the one who challenged me. Not the other way around or did we forget that you pointed me out amongst the crowd." The clone spoke just to them suddenly and violently explode in a gory white light that seemed to alter the flow of reality before them. The illusion that Bigsby crafted through all of this display of power was nothing to simply that the old wizard did not compensate for minor setbacks. After all things did just get interesting.

The real Bigsby continued to move throughout his clones keeping pace as they did just to then give a flick of his wrist as the tower of stone he had erected in the dueling arena began to ignite as well sending vast explosive waves of color throughout the area allowing for his illusions to keep up the work and shift and shimmer.

Invoker gave a shout of surprise as the totem exploded, activating another artifact hidden within his robes, wreathing him in a green pillar of light, shielding him from the dangerous energies, his elementals managing to fire off several shots at a few of the chanting visages before being crushed by the waves of energy.
The Arsenal Magus, ran across the dueling field, distancing himself from the pillar while flinging fireballs at any Bigsby he could spot, attempting to weed out the real one with his Alacrity, invoking his Sun Strike again and calling it down on three Bigsbys who were standing a little too close together, working to keep casting and staying more mobile after the surprise clone totem from behind him, growling and gritting his teeth as he summoned two balls of ice and one of fire, invoking a wall of ice cutting the dueling field in half, attempting to catch the elusive wizard in its freezing grasp, invoking his Deafening Blast again and firing it down the left side of the Dueling field, attempting to crush the clones on his side of the field before invoking his ghost walk again, disappearing from sight line of white light shooting from one side of the ice wall to the other, starting where he disappeared and leading to the middle of the right side of the field, alluding that he had used something to propel himself from one side of the wall to the other with out harming himself, another flash a little away from where the line had ended giving away yet another invocation, though the magus refused to come out of his invisibility spell, the side effects of the odd spell sucking the heat from the air once more.
It seemed that this time the Arsenal Magus was being patient and waiting for Bigsby to make the first move.

More and more of the clones would shatter from reality and with that more spells would be flung until finally Bigsby watched and smirked as he stepped forward leaving trails of runes behind with every footstep he made. As the other spellcaster was moving about the field of battle Bigsby simply spun himself around and tossed his staff high into the air just to toss a jolt of lightning up at it shattering it and filling the terrain with what appeared to be thousands of rabbits. With the rabbits summoned Bigsby leaned down and touched the heels of his shoes and muttered a few more words just to find himself floating up into the sky as to get a much cleaner view of the situation.

At twenty feet the wizard simply looked down upon the floor and reached into his sleeve to produce a strange pouch only to open it and allow its glittering dust to fall down upon the populace of bunnies and his opposition bellow just to say a few more words and smile as the glitter dust spell began to work wonders. As it landed upon the bunnies and the invisible foe they would all begin to shimmer. The rabbits began to shiver as they glowed a pale and within seconds they all began to rush off in every direction leaving only the invisible evoker left behind.

The revealed magus growled and cursed as he was revealed, feeling that he was being mocked, what with all the magical bunnies and glitter, whipping out his wand once more, the crimson lightning shooting out from it's crystal straight at the Wizard.
"You think to mock me?! I am the Invoker! The one! The only! Arsenal Magus!" The enraged Invoker spun on the spot as he unleashed a wave of energy, unleashing his Deafening Blast once more, the rushing winds blasting the glimmering powder off of his body, he thrust his hands forth in an attempt to entrap the wizard within a Cold Snap once more the air around him freezing again, another Tornado and an EMP charging up near the wizards current location.
"I am the sole wielder of the spherical arcaneries! Magics capable of toppling mountains, crumbling castles and cleaving armies asunder!"
He raised his arms above his head, summoning again his Chaos Meteor and Sun Strike, the beam of light and ball of burning rock hurtling straight for the hovering magician. "Do not attempt to best me you wizened old trickster!!"

Bigsby looked down at the now enraged evoker who slung spells at him as sloppily as any first year student and even more so as the ebb and flow of energies was just off enough to cause a stir in the old wizards appearance. As the first blast came tumbling towards him Bigsby simply took hold of the spells as if they were nothing more than toys and crushed them before his very hands only to then use that very same energy to fuel his own spells as time seemed to stop for a few seconds. Arcane energies that collided and reformed before the wizard created several large blinding blasts of power that moved across the sky only to clear and reveal that the old man was gone.

"it is through the basics that we learn to master the real problematic spells and even some of the more complex ones that require our full on attention. Before I teach you anything and force you to leave this place in shame know this. Time is convoluted and due to that fact heroes and villains of all ages in the history of man and other being alike can interact with ease." Those final words ebbed with a much older power as the floor beneath them turned into a massive door as a gate spell had been cast during the confusion along with rope trick forcing the two spellcasters to vanish from the academy.
