a character in “The Multiverse”, as played by Celedia

Description

Name: James Andrew Montgomery

Age: 28

Race: Human

Occupation: By day he is a talent scout/manager helping (or conning) those with a dream of fame into allowing him to 'help' their progress. A few of his clients have actually made it big, providing him with a nest egg in which to fund his shadier activities. By night he oversees a large organization that specializes in anything underhanded or devious from assassinations to thefts.

Appearance: Golden skin, black eyes, sculpted cheekbones, and dark closely-shaven hair. He could have and would have been a male model if he had any penchant for vanity. James dresses well, usually in dark colored suits accessorized with ascots instead of ties, if any neckwear is worn at all.

Personality: James is for the most part, bored with life. Very few people actually entertain him for a prolonged amount of time which is why he leads such a double life. During his day job he plays and toys with the dreams of young upstarts and during the evening he tries to control chaos itself.

Skills/Powers: Only armed with his own skills and charm, he is quite capable of holding his own in battle yet rarely gets into a fight since he would prefer to talk his way out of conflict instead. He does, however, have a massive fortune available to fund his every whim, including purchasing the latest toys and gadgets.

Weaknesses: Cops and any law abiding citizen that might prevent his fun.

History: James' history has been lost during the passage of time. Here and there he leaves hints about his past but leaves you wondering whether they are true bits of history or something he has conjured out of thin air since he is quite adept at lying.

So begins...

James Andrew Montgomery The door to Gambit's swung open once again though not with the hard *thwap* of an angry patron nor the brutal devastation wrought by earlier men seeking evil. No, the door simply opened and James entered the room, reaching quickly behind himself to catch the door before it could rattle from shutting too quickly. Then, using the same hand he smoothed the fabric of his blazer and took his time to look about the room. A hazy sort of smoke filled the air though he could see no patrons smoking at the moment. Perhaps it was a characteristic of all bars in all universes.

As he began to cross the bar, his movements were oddly smooth. Like a jungle cat on the prowl and his face was quite serious as dark eyes travelled from patron to patron, finally settling upon a small fairy-like creature as he reached the bar itself. In his business, he could always use an extra set of eyes and ears and the wee-folk were some of the best scouts around. In fact, one of the demi-fey had spotted this miniscule lady and reported it to him and he had found it interesting enough to come down to take a look himself.

Sliding onto a barstool and folding his hands upon the bar, James gestured for the robotic tender and signaled for his usual, then turned to face the small lass, awaiting for her acknowledgement.

James Andrew Montgomery had been watching the small figure of Lily even as his drink arrived yet his attention was torn away when the firey haired girl started to sing. -A siren? Here?- His curiousity piqued and he berated himself for not sending a daily spy into this godforsaken bar. At least then he would have been prepared. He knew of most other inhabitants in Wing City from the dhampir to the Avian to the magic-wielding humans but he had only met a true siren once before.

Sipping at his Scotch, James remained silent as he watched the two women interact. Perhaps he would come back another night and attempt to recruit the thumb-sized woman. For now, he was delegating his task to gather information instead.

James Andrew Montgomery stands up with a blank countenance. He would thread his way through the sparsely populated bar room to reach the exit, casting one more intrigued glance over his shoulder before slipping out of the door. Perhaps it was time to reinstate a regular watch over Gambit's once more. There were too many new people that were slipping past his net of spies.

James Andrew Montgomery looked slightly perturbed as Ilyana turned towards him and began aiming her camera his way. He was used to finding talent, being the observer in all situations but never the topic of interest. Dark eyes flickered to his left as his posture remained relaxed, searching for the face behind the lens first. She was a beauty with an exotic flair and he found it surprising that she wasn't on the opposite side of the camera. Perhaps she was an artist?

Withdrawing a small handheld device from the pocket of his blazer, James tapped in a few commands and one of the wheeled robotics suddenly lit up, spinning on its wheels and jetting over to the camerawoman.
"Drink. Courtesy of....
the sentence died as the robotic server deposited a tall thin glass holding a sweeter drink for the lady, dropping it onto the counter in front of Ilyana before wheeling its way over to James and handing over a glass of Scotch.

Good day!
the robot chirped before rolling back into the kitchen.

James felt his lips inexplicably quirk into a slight grin. She sounds foreign too. So the voice matches the look. He thought as he lifted his own glass, taking a swig before lowering it onto the counter once more and clasping his hands together with elbows rested on the bar.

As Ilyana thanked him, he bowed his head towards her in response, eyebrow arching slightly at her toast.
You sounded displeased with the drink you had before...
He gestured towards the half-full beverage before her and smiled and as her interest turned back towards her camera, he found his own eyes following.
"So, are you an artist? Or do you take photographs for the fun of it?"

James Andrew Montgomery kept his countenance relatively blank as the photographer spoke to him though his eyes captured every detail, every nuance of her actions. Her work was high quality indeed and that seemed to drag the Talent Scout side of his personality out a bit as he conversed with her.
"Actually..."
he trailed off for effect, taking another sip of his Scotch in between words,
"You do take remarkable photographs.

As the pictures flipped on her camera, he noticed one picture of the red-haired girl from the previous night with her hand engulfed in flame. An eyebrow arched inquisitively as he moved his hand to motion to her camera with a fingertip.
"You took this today as well?"
Information could come from anywhere and now he knew that the siren possessed other powers as well. Intriguing. He would have to stop by this bar more often.

James Andrew Montgomery couldn't help it as a chuckle escaped his lips.
"You want the redhead to get angry enough to break your camera next time?
The laughter died down but the smile remained as he looked towards Ilyana and decided introductions were in order. He extended a hand towards her and said,
"I am James Andrew Montgomery. And you are?"

While waiting for her reply, it occurred to him that he was more intrigued by the photographer than by her pictures. There had to be some reason that she was in Wing City and it disappointed him that he had not learned of her until now. Her pictures were actually good. Not the artsy shots of rose petals that he had seen strewn across the Galleries lately but actual emotive portraits.

James Andrew Montgomery inclined his head towards Ilyana, turning her hand and pressing a light kiss on the back of it before releasing it once more. He listened to her speak, perhaps concentrating harder than he would normally during a conversation because of her accent and at the end he made a sweeping gesture with his hand as if to say 'You've caught me'.
"I am quite boring, actually. You've hit the nail on the head there."

Another chuckle issued forth as he shook his head.
"I agree that there is much emotion in Wing City. Every day seems to be life or death for these people."
He spoke as if he were not a part of the community but little did she know that he was a part of it. He was just a part of the darker underworld-side of the community.

James Andrew Montgomery let the woman come closer to him, a quick upturn of his lips as she caught herself and moved slightly away. Though his eyes were intent upon the pictures that she took, a quick burst of laughter filled the room as she misconstrued his expression.

"No, no.
He interjected, his tone silky smooth and still holding a touch of amusement,
"It's a turn of phrase meaning you were spot on. You guessed correctly. I am quite boring."

As she began to study his features, his expression changed back into one of slight amusement, though otherwise held no emotion. Violence? Sadness? He tried not to grin as she evaluated him. So, instead of giving her answers he returned the favor and began his examination of her. Capturing her narrow chin in with his rough fingertips, his touch was surprisingly gentle as he turned her face from side to side as if studying a model.

"You are extraordinarily beautiful but hidden behind the lens. You capture a range of emotions as well. Is this your way of hiding? If you were vain, you would be a model yet you turn the tables and capture beauty instead of exemplifying it. I do not see sadness I see... Fear."
He held her jaw in his hand still, waiting to see if she would jerk away or remain. His tone had been low and almost scientific with a hint of warmth since he hadn't wanted to sound like an ass.

James Andrew Montgomery felt his lips curve into an almost feral smirk. Information was his bread and butter and Ilyana's reaction, her countenance, had betrayed that she still had a depth of truth to reveal.
"It's better for them to see what you see, not what you are?"
He repeated back to her in question form to set himself up for a follow-up inquiry. Still holding her chin lightly between two fingers, he leaned in closer, dark eyes glittering as he whispered,
"And what are you, then, Ilyana Maric?"
His voice mirrored his actions, deep and soothing like a predator trying to lure prey. He couldn't help it, it was a part of who he was and now that she had shown that there was more to her than just being a photographer, he was interested beyond measure.

Adding another comment, he wanted her to believe that he knew her deepest darkest secrets and it would be better for her to simply share them out loud instead of keeping them to herself.
"What are you hiding?

James Andrew Montgomery tilted his head slightly to one side as his curiousity grew with her answers, rather than subsiding.
"You are definitely not... Nothing."
He wondered if his command over languages was correct. Having studied a plethora of other dialects as well as commanding a veritable army of information gatherers gave him at least the smallest foothold on most other languages. Nothing? Most definitely not. James was the type to grow bored easily and she had yet to lose his focus.

A quick separation of fingertips led to her chin being released, though his hand moved just as fast towards her camera in an attempt to take it from her clutching hands. A part of him wondered if her role in life was tied to the photography.

"So, Ilyana. Why are you hiding everything? What makes you so scared to be the focus of my attentions?"
Though his words made it seem like this was all a game to him, he was deadly serious. For someone that he hadn't known of more than an hour ago, she was still full of intrigue and mystery. Most women tended to blather on within the first 20 minutes of conversation. This was definitely one of those times when the phrase came to mind- The harder you have to work towards something makes you want it even more.

James Andrew Montgomery glanced down at the camera in his hands before lifting his eyes to study her face. Her voice almost mirroring that of a small, scared child. He hadn't wanted to break her though. No, he had simply wanted to crack at the surface to peer beneath and he was beginning to wonder what exactly he had uncovered.

"And what if the pain is not there? The anger?"
His gaze once more settled upon her face, voice more soothing than before. The feral smile washed off of his lips and replaced by something more comforting.

"Did the siren possess anger before you took her picture? Was she in the midst of a battle, with her hand encapsulated in fire?
The question was heartfelt. In the picture, the red-haired woman had been glaring at the camer itself, it seemed. Not at a passerby or enemy.

James Andrew Montgomery nodded as he watched the slideshow of snapshots. Not entirely interested in the Siren but more so in the photographer and her explanations. His fingers enclosed around the edges of the camera, carefully though so as not to break the equipment but secured enough to resist her from taking it back when he tried to turn the conversation back onto her least favorite topic. Herself.

"So, how long ago did you say you came to Wing City to begin taking pictures?"
He would start out with the easy questions. The frivolous ones that didn't seem to be too inquisitive or too penetrating and work his way up. Perhaps he would try the alcohol approach as well to loosen her lips and prevent the rigid posture that she had adopted the last time he had questioned her about herself.

Withdrawing the device from his pocket, he punched in another series of codes which had the robotic bartender short circuit for a moment before it would zoom back into the kitchen. Within seconds it wheeled back out, carrying a silver tray bearing the same two drinks it had carried before. A rather sweet drink for Ilyana and another Scotch for James.

James Andrew Montgomery nodded, his concentration set intently upon the camera in his hands. He was no mage, no scientist so he didn't have an answer for the girls obvious reluctance to relinquish her camera to him other than the fact that it was her livelihood. And quite possibly expensive to boot. So he continued to page through the slideshow, trying to peer further back than the pictures taken today as he conversed.
"Ah so you've hit many of Europe's beautiful cities. You were in Oslo, have you been to Lillehammer? Stayed there once. Beautiful cottage by a massive crystal clear lake. If you were a landscape photographer I would ship you off to there now but that wouldn't satisfy you... Would it? You're more into portraiture."

That question wasn't really directed at her though it sounded like it was. It was merely an observation.
"What do you do with all of the pictures you take?
" He asked, intrigued as to whether she has some sort of vast library of still frames. If these pictures were simply from a single day's worth of work, she must have thousands of photos.

Her question towards him caught him off guard and he flashed her a quick grin before nodding.
"Yes, Ilyana. There are about 10 or so floors above us which house apartments, single rooms for rent, etc...."
He trailed off before barraging her with his next question.
"So how long are you planning on staying?
"

James Andrew Montgomery glanced up at the clock and noted that it was time for him to take his leave. At least for awhile, duty called. A quick flicker of motion had her hand in his and he pressed the camera into her palm gently, waiting for her to wrap her fingers around it before he would let it go. His dark eyes held her gaze for a moment as the smallest of smiles played across his lips.

"Ilyana, my dear, I am afraid I have to go. I have a business meeting and quite honestly, I did not expect to spend my entire day in the bar. Though I wouldn't have wished to spend it in any other way."
A soft chuckle escaped as he stood, brushing a hand over the lapels of his blazer.
"Though I do wish to see you again. So I hope you don't decide to leave anytime soon."
With a practiced hand, he whipped out a black matte business card with just a phone number printed on the front in plain white text.
"If you need anything while you're in town... Do not hesitate to call. Anytime of the day."

James Andrew Montgomery inclined his head towards her once more then decided to surprise her. He curved a hand around her upper arm, dragging her in close and pressing a soft kiss on her cheek. She was of obvious European descent so he would see how she took the gesture. Either as a common goodbye between friends or the hint of something more?

He wouldn't give her enough time to think about it either. Pulling away, he released her arm and smiled at her, bowing slightly.
"Perhaps one day I will let you steal my picture, Ilyana Maric. Until then."
He brought his hand up into a quick wave as he turned on his heel, gliding across the barroom floor as he made his exit and slipped out onto Main Street.

James Andrew Montgomery strolled into the room, brushing one hand over his velvet blazer as his dark eyes cast their gaze about the room. Usually he sent one of his many employees out into this vile bar but today he had heard an intriguing rumor and decided to come investigate for himself.

His eyes met his quarry yet he feigned disinterest at first. Instead he strolled the length of the bar to get a drink and when he passed Ersilia's table, he momentarily passed his glance over the doll-like female. Once at the counter, he withdrew a slim device, tapping his finger against the touchscreen to override the bar's internal menu system. Within seconds, one of the robots wheeled over to him, carrying a glass of scotch on its serving tray. James lifted it, crediting the bars account with a sum of money with the same handheld device before slipping it into his pocket. As he turned his torso, his gaze once again fell onto Ersilia and he watched her from afar to see if the scouts had given him the correct information.

James Andrew Montgomery James shook his head sadly as he clasped the glass of Scotch in his hand. So the old man finally did it... He let her go. With a sigh, he drank down about half of his glass before turning asking the robotic bartender for a refill before he would approach the girl. She couldn't know who had sent him, which would make this meeting awkward and difficult but how else was he supposed to 'watch over' the girl without her knowing that she had someone she could turn to in times of trouble? James owed this doll-like girl's creator a favor and if watching over her during her stay in Wing City was all that was required of him... He would perform the task without hesitation. Walking over to Ersilia, he slid into the seat across from her with a soft smile, hoping that he wouldn't frighten her. "Hello, Ersilia. You are safe here."

James Andrew Montgomery placed his Scotch onto the table and spread both hands out in a defensive motion. "I was told to look out for you. Protect you." That much he could tell her. He sighed again, running a hand over his closely cut hair. "Not many people have a piggy protector." He inclined his head towards the pig doll, acknowledging her for who she was. "Good evening to the both of you. If you wish me to leave, I will. I simply thought I would introduce myself. I am James." He made no move to extend his hand for a handshake since he didn't want to frighten or antagonize either of them.

James Andrew Montgomery inwardly cringed. The one question he wasn't allowed to answer truthfully. The old man had made him promise not to indicate that he had been asked to watch over her. "Pleasure to meet you, Ersilia," he reached out, clasping his larger, warm hand around her small, delicate hand and shaking it gently. When he drew his hand back, he used it to lift his Scotch once more, taking another sip to fuel his wording.

"You are surely confused here and for that, I wish I could help you. I was told you would be delivered here and that if you would need anything, to make sure that you knew that you could rely on me." A smile filled his features as he leaned back against the back of the booth. "So, first step is money. Have you had the opportunity to spend money before?" He looked at Ersilia first, then down to her pint-sized protector.

James Andrew Montgomery nodded to Ersilia as he reached down into his pocket, withdrawing a small wad of bills held together by a diamond-encrusted moneyclip. He had considered getting her a credit card but the possibility of theft in this City was a bit too extreme for his taste. If she lost the money, he could simply give her more but if she lost the card and didn't tell him, thieves could rack up insane charges before he would cancel the account.

Slipping a few bills out of the money clip, he held them out in front of Ersilia with a smile. "Well here is a bit for you to start with. I have made the arrangements for you to have a room here, if you wish. Pick any room you'd like, just tell the manager. This..." he trailed off, indicating the money that he held out for her, "Is for things that you might need. Do you... Do you eat?" His brow furrowed when he realized that he hadn't asked that bit of information.

James Andrew Montgomery laid the money down in front of Ersilia since she hadn't taken it from his hand. "So, tell me Ersilia. Do you know why you were brought here?" He had witheld his curiousity for this long. The old man had simply told him the when and where of the situation- not the why. As he awaited her answer, he let his thumb trace over the side of his glass of Scotch, dark eyes casually taking in all details of his environment.

James Andrew Montgomery frowned slightly. The bastard hadn't told him that he was in poor health. Was this really how he meant to treat the creation that he considered his daughter? Shove her out into the real world so he could pass away at home without worrying her? His gaze swept downwards to the miniature porcelain pig, searching for a way to brighten the conversation. "Ahhh, that is understandable. I am sorry to say that I can honestly do nothing to help you with that." James let his dark eyes meet Ersilia's for a brief moment. "If there is anything else I can do, though...."

James Andrew Montgomery sighed, leaning forward onto the table and reaching across so that he could wipe her tears away with the pad of his thumb. "Ersilia, I apologize. I didn't mean to make you cry. Perhaps we can try to find information. To see what happened to your Papa and your kitten?" He was honestly at a loss for words and would be contacting the old man through his employees to see what kind of situation he had gotten himself into with all of this.
