A thunderstorm struck The Golden Vale.

The rains came down like they hadn't in ages, soaking everything and everyone in an instant. The entropy of magic across Gaia was felt as the rain fell, officially, by the magic users. Felt more by some, felt not at all by others. It was as if there was a leak somewhere. Where was the magic going? It couldn't of simply been disappearing...

Nicholas felt the cool breeze caress his face and stretched with a relaxed pose. The day had been fruitful, save for a few fools that decided to question his tactics. His tail flicked in thought, an odd quirk he had since he was a child. The Golden Vale was a peaceful place, where one could collect his thoughts and ponder his next moves. His ears perked up at the sound of movement and he thought he smelled others present. He crouched low into the brush and watched for individuals in the area, before he made himself known to them. There was never a true time for relaxation, but he wanted to scope the area before he introduced himself to any individual.

As if on cue, rain pelted against his leather-clad body and he continued to focus on his current task. The rain would provide some shelter for his stealth, since his sound would be masked by the falling rain. His eyes glinted with a mischievous playfulness to them and he waited with the patience of a hunter.

Lightning streaked across the sky and its silver streaks, created a brilliant spider-like effect across the black velvet sky. The rain comforted him now, but Nicholas began to grow bored by the waiting. He trusted his instincts and knew he felt another presence, so he continued to watch with an uncanny calmness.

As Jamie walked along the leafy dirt path, paying no mind to the storm clouds roaring above her. She never really minded the rain, it gave her more of an advantage if she needed to escape or slip into hiding, stealth was one of her best friends. Her tail wagged back in forth as she continued, The pleasant scent that filled the air indicated it would rain any second. Her ears fell back as a reaction just as the rain fell upon her. Her lips curled into a smile, she loved the smell of rain. Lighting illuminated everything around her, as she continued to walk she felt as though she wasn't alone.

Jamie's ears perked up listening for any kind of movement. Her eye's surveyed the area around her, she couldn't see anyone as she walked. Her paws crushing small sticks and knocking around rocks. She stopped a few feet away from some bushes and trees. Before moving on she decided to wait and listen. While still surveying the area, she crouched down trying to become less visible if someone were to be watching her, her tail curled up along side her legs. She couldn't make out a smell due to the fresh rainfall which was masking over most of the other smells.

Nicholas was still like a predator, his footfalls soft against the muddied ground from the fallen rain. He crept up toward Jamie and assumed she was an unfriendly individual, based on her posture and sudden appearance. Nicholas withdrew his right handed dagger and prepared to engage. Alone in the woods, one could never be too prepared. Perhaps this individual was with the city patrol. Either way, he needed to be vigilant. No harm would come to the person, but a decent scare tactic would ensue. Silver lightning crawled along the black backdrop of the night sky and thunder cracked in the background. It was the perfect scenario for hunting, but he didn't normally hunt other beings. Typically, he stole from them, or assassinated them based on a contract.

Nicholas twitched his tail in thought and perked his ears up. Something was familiar about the shape of this person. Upon closer inspection, he realized they were a female and fox-like. If he were a real predator, she'd of made the mistake of stepping from her hiding place and exposing herself in an open area.

He smirked, then stealthed to flank her on her right. Nicholas decided to sheath his dagger, so his approach would cause less hysteria. If there were others patrolling the area, the last thing he needed was a hysterical female. Nicholas removed himself from stealth and was by her side. It was as if he emerged from nothing, the darkness produced a male figure of a fox clad in leather. He nodded toward her in a friendly manner, although that hadn't been the case a few moments ago. Nicholas studied her, reading her posture and way she carried herself.

"It's not safe here. You lost?" He asked her and glanced around the rain drenched area. Others could be watching them, his tail flicked with a nervousness. His voice was husky, quiet and confident in tone. It was as if he were addressing another military personnel.

"You shouldn't be out here." Nicholas watched Jamie for any sudden movements, his emerald green eyes glinted against the splash of lightning streaks.

As Jamie waited in silence, the only thing that was heard occasionally was the roar of thunder from above. All other noise during such would be masked which didn't help any situation. Her eye's shifted back and forth around her, looking for any sign of movement. Jamie had no way to know if the person that could be around her is friendly or not. Suddenly a voice broke the silence to her right.

"It's not safe here. you lost?" she didn't recognize the voice, she turned looking towards source. Slowly she stood up, making sure to keep eye contact, she examined him seeing no weapon drawn. That's a good sign, as far as we know. The dark figure spoke again "You shouldn't be out here"

"I'm not lost. I can handle myself" Jamie said cautiously, trying to get a better look at the man in front of her. As the lighting struck she got a glimpse of him. He too was a fox like she was, still it was still yet to be understood if he was friendly. Jamies blue eye's never left his, trying to read him looking for any sign that he might be a threat. Her ears fell back, he was a little intimidating due the circumstances, he could very easily win. Her tail flicked to her other side, her paws lay at her side, close to her knife in case she needs to use it.

"What are you wondering around alone for anyway?" Jamie asks, knowing it might not be in her best interest to be to straight forward. The rain fell upon them, pitter-patter of rain was constantly present. The raindrops danced around them.

He smirked at her reaction. Had he not been the "friendly," type, Nicholas wondered how she'd fair in a fight. He studied her up and down, his eyes critical. Like any other male, he stopped at her breasts and the smirk turned into a thin smile. His weight shuffled and he cleared his throat, the amusement apparent in his tone.

"What am I doing out here alone? This is just a favorite past time. I didn't plan on running into a beautiful woman, though." Nicholas paused and smiled, the mischief alight in his eyes. "That's new. Maybe I should wander alone in the woods more often." He explained and swayed his tail in thought. His home wasn't too far away and she looked soaked to the bones. It would surprise him if she wasn't starved for something other than berries, or herbs from the forest.

Nicholas folded his arms and ignored the rain. He'd give anything to be in front of his fireplace right now. "Unless you enjoy freezing to death, how about you come back to my place to warm up?" He boldly asked her, his movement confident in the way he stood in a casual stance.

It was her choice. She could risk illness, or enjoy his company and a warm fire...possibly some food. Nicholas waited for her response and felt amused by the tension between them.

Jamie was taken by surprise when he asked her to go back to his place. She had just met the guy, however her fur was drenched and she could use some warm food or drink to get her back on her feet. Jamie smiled, it's not ever day you come across a guy in the woods hitting on you. Shrugging she nods, "Alright, I could use a pick me up..lets head to your place" Jamie tells him, giving him a warm smile.

"Just don't kill me when we get there." She jokes, her tail swayed back and forth as she let out a nervous laugh. Jamie is a bit skeptical but it would be nice to relax a bit, she had been walking a while. Jamie is far from where she calls home anyway, she recently decided to go on a little journey maybe make some new friends or find some work. The unexpected roar of thunder, made Jamie jump a tad bit. Trying to play it cool she swiftly scratches behind her ear "These bugs are biting me everywhere.. She laughs nervously before looking over to the man in front of her. Her ears perked up and she looked him in the eye's.

"Oh! I'm Jamie. I just thought i'd mention it, i don't believe i told you who i am." She tells him, her tail yet again sways back and forth, she gives a soft smile. "I'm ready to go whenever you are. She says waiting for him to take the lead.

Forward or not, Nicholas took her hand and led her to his humble cabin in the woods. It was the perfect set up for a scary camp story, but it was anything but when they entered. The scent of food wafted through the door with an inviting aroma and exotic beer, wine, and dwarven ale lined his cupboard kitchen walls. He led a simple life, but it was enough to keep him content, considering his profession. As a rogue and traveller, he never knew when he'd be back home the next day. Sometimes odd jobs kept him out for weeks on end. Since work was slow, Nicholas was able to tend to his life back home and patrol the area to gain more skills. He removed his drenched cloak and hung it up on an iron hook by the door. He took any soaked item of clothing of Jaime's and did the same treatment with them. For the rain soaked items, he placed by the fire to dry and went to retrieve wooden bowls from the kitchen.

Stew was a simple meal, but satisfying. Full of carrots, meat and exotic spices, it would be an inviting dish for the weary travelers. Rain continued to pound against his windows and the wind howled. Lightning sparked with a white hot streak across the sky and washed the living area for a moment.

"I'm Nicholas. You are welcome to stay here as long as you need." He sat down on an overused chair that was losing its form. It was obvious that he favored this chair, since it sagged in specific areas and it was beginning to lose its stuffing. Nicholas reached for a nearby pipe and lit it with a weariness. The scent of the pipe's aroma would be relaxing, but he'd give anything to be in a tavern full of people, live music and home-cooked meals.

"So, what WERE you doing out there in the woods? It isn't common for me to run into folks around here, let alone one of my kind." He stated, then inhaled a puff of his pipe. Trails of smoke curled around his form and dissipated. The fire crackled and the storm began to die down.

As they entered Nicholas's home, her snout was filled with all kinds of aromas. It wasn't a bad thing, she gave him her coat and placed her shoes by the fire to dry off. Watching as he got them some stew, which just happened to be her favorite she made herself comfortable over by the fire. Sitting in one of the chairs, he watched as he came closer to her with two bowls of steaming stew.

She smiled "Thank you, it's nice to meet you Nicholas." She said to him in a soft tone, she sat back in the chair getting comfy before shoveling a spoonful of stew in her snout. As she finished her spoonful she looked to Nicholas who was asking her why she had been out in the woods. The thunder roared above them, the storm seemed to be dying down.

"Well, you see I just wanted to go on a little adventure. I'm out looking for work." She said to him, as she blew on her stew, to cool it down just a tad. The sound of the crackling fire made her relax and feel at peace. She smiled at him before taking another bite. He sure did know how to make a home cooked meal, which was a nice treat. Peering around his cabin, it felt homey. As she finished up her stew, she stood up and brought the bowl and spoon back into the kitchen placing it in the sink. Walking back over she plopped on the chair she was on before and smiled to Nicholas.

"Thank you for inviting me over, it was very nice of you." she paused as her tail swayed back and forth, she cleared her throat before she began to speak again. "Is there anything I could do to repay you?" Jamie asked him, she didn't mind it was the least she could due. I mean it's not everyday a stranger would invite you into their home and do such nice things for you. She gave him a soft smile.

Nicholas was captivated by her cadence and way she held her spoon. He escaped his reverie when she spoke to him, her tone of voice lifted with a cheeriness. There were many things she could do to repay them, although they had just met, he wondered if he'd be so bold as to invite her to stay another night. The company of Jamie intrigued him and they spent the next couple of hours discussing their travels and home life. The fire glowed with a dulled phoenix red, but he didn't dare ruin the ambience. His ears perked at the slight downpour outside and Nicholas realized the rain was letting up. It was a nice change of pace, but it did alter the mood of the atmosphere.

He smiled at her with a warmth and went to take care of his own dishes. As a single man, he doubted enough could entertain him, but perhaps she could prove him wrong. His tail swayed in thought, while he rinsed the bowl in a habitual manner. Once that small chore was done, he met her by her chair and began to massage her shoulders with a gentle touch. The rain continued to pitter-patter against the window, while the fire crackled with its own intention.

The movement was subtle, but enough to create an inviting thought. Nicholas continued to give her a massage and went in for a kiss, unafraid of the results. He was there to enjoy her company, nothing more.

"Do you really wish to repay me?" Nicholas asked, his voice laced with a husky tone. If she welcomed him, he'd invite her to entertain him in a way that benefited them both.

Jamie watched as Nicholas cleaned his dishes, she waited by the fire place that was crackling away. The rain outside was coming to an end. As she felt to paws on her shoulder, her heart began to pound she wasn't sure what was going on at first. Her eye's locked on to Nicholas as he went in for a kiss, she kissed him back. She heard him speak, she nodded to his question. "Yes, i'd like to repay you.." She said to him softly, her ears dropped back.

What was this feeling? The tingly feeling she felt all over her body, it was a good sensation but one she hasn't felt ever. Her tail flicked beside her, it was like her had no control over her body. Getting lost in thought she looked to Nicholas who is standing behind her, turning her body so she could look at him.

"what did you have in mind?" She asks in yet another soft tone, her eye's gaze up into his. As the fire crackled behind them, it was like something was telling her to stay the night. A soft but warm smile formed on her snout, she didn't want to ruin this moment.

A few moments later and Nicholas physically showed her "what he had in mind," for them. She was treated like a Queen, or Goddess of some sort. That was how he treated all of his women, regardless of how long, or short they had known each other. He and Jamie created a bond with one another in a small period of time, which was impressive for any woman to achieve with him. Normally unavailable, he made himself vulnerable to her and after they enjoyed each others bodies, they talked long into the night. He shared his dreams, ambitions with her and held her close. Nicholas fell asleep next to Jamie, his body limp from exhaustion. He had never wanted to create such a moment for someone before, but Jamie brought that out in him. He was stoic with most, but Nicholas found himself laughing at her conversations and the way her eyes lit up, when they shared intimate thoughts with one another.

He felt exposed, but in a good way.

No other woman had made him open up the way she had. All of his protective walls were thrown down for her. They made passionate love into the late morning. Nicholas awoke to the sound of birds chirping outside and the bright morning sun washed through his bedroom window.

Peace, that was what she brought him. His eyes snapped open at the realization and he smiled to himself content. There was something between them that he didn't want to end. If he could hold onto this moment forever, he'd bottle it up and store it away for himself.

Nicholas stretched and yawned, his tail flicked in thought. He decided to make them breakfast, even if it was just a simple porridge. After the pleasure she gave him last night, he decided then to ask her to stay another night.

Hell, she could even come and go as she pleased.

The scent of breakfast would waft through the house, a pot of porridge simmered over an open flame. Nicholas placed equal amounts of food in each wooden bowl and went to wake up Jamie. He was dressed only in his pants for comfort, but he had a feeling there'd be no complaints from her.

Nicholas whispered something sensual in her right ear and beckoned for her to wake.

As the night went on Jamie enjoyed herself like never before. The way she felt with Nicholas was something completely new, and she loved every minute of it, not wanting the moments to end. After an eventful for hours, they finally fell asleep. She woke up to shispers in her ears, her ears twitched as she listened. A smile formed across her snout, opening her sleepy eye's. She see's Nicholas standing over her, giving him a soft smile. "Good morning" She whisperers to him. As she sits up a long yawn escapes her snout as she stretches her arms to greet the new day. Her tail flicked as she got out of bed, letting out yet another yawn. His house smelt amazing, a homemade meal made in the morning was the best.

As she made her way out to the bathroom to freshen up, she gazed into the mirror seeing her fur all wild. Jamie chuckled a bit before brushing her teeth and washing up a bit. She stretched once again and proceeded to the kitchen were Nicholas was now standing distributing the meal. Walking over behind him, she gives him a hug before seating down. She appreciates everything he's done, even in the little time they've known each other she feels a sense of trust and loyal was formed in such a sort time.

Jamie smiles to him as the bowl was set in front of her. The steaming bowl smelt wonderful, as she picked her spoon up before taking a bite, she looked to Nicholas "Thank you..How did you sleep?" She asks him before blowing on a spoonful and shoving it in her snout.

Her voice sent shivers down his spine, but he was content with that. They shared their breakfast and intimate thoughts, while he teased her about last night. She had managed to keep him up until daybreak, but it was a night he'd always lock up safe in his memories. Nicholas watched Jamie, the way she questioned his sleep, to the simple things like eating her breakfast. Her ability to snare his attention intrigued him. They had only known each other for a few days, but he already knew that he wanted her. There was no room for future possibilities. Nicholas had never been this in love with someone before, so he wanted to make his commitment here and now.

"It was heaven, but you're responsible for that." He winked at her, then smirked. She had called out his name thrice, even a fourth time that night as the rain fell. Her cries blended in with the thunder, but he took it all in. Although she appeared unapproachable, she was anything but in the bedroom. She knew how to create that burning desire in him and few women accomplished that feat. He smiled in her direction and sat down by the fire. It was still warm, but it didn't glow its usual ember color.

He inhaled and exhaled with a happiness. Nicholas knew that it was the simple things in his life, that created this feeling of contentment.

"Marry me, Jamie. I don't want another man to have you. In fact, I won't allow it." Nicholas said, the boldness obvious in his tone. The action might be premature, but he wanted to make his claim on their relationship. There was no other woman like Jamie and he'd be damned if he let her go now. He could see them having children and managing their roguish lifestyle. It was all possible.

Their dreams could be molded into one vision. He'd support her in her endeavors. Whatever she wanted. She would be his Queen, his focus, while they created a life together. Nicholas went to his pipe and inhaled the familiar aroma. He waited for her response, unafraid of what could be.

As Jamie ate and continued talking to Nicholas, she was shocked with the question he had asked her. Finishing her bowl, she looks up in his direction. "Are you serious?" She asks, she was intrigued, but scared. Commitment isn't something she expected to get into right away. Her ears perked up at the thought of being his wife, a happy couple going through life as they please. She smiled, as she put her bowl and spoon in the sink. Her tail sways walking over to Nicholas.

"If you are...I want to marry you.." Jamie admits to him, she couldn't have bumped into a better person the other night. Her eye's light up as she gets closer to him, she plops down on his lap, wrapping her arms around his neck. Her ears fall back and she kisses him on the cheek, her tail flicked with excitement. The smile emitting from Jamie was genuinely happy and you could tell how excited she was to start a life, maybe even a family. She's never felt this way before, it was just wonderful to feel loved and wanted.

"Would...would we get married right away or wait a few weeks for planning?" She asks him, peering into his eye's. Jamie never minded the pipe smoking, she has some odd habits of her own. Letting out a sigh a smile formed on her snout, as she goes back just a few minutes ago hearing the words come out of Nicholas's mouth. She couldn't believe how well their relationship was going, it was like...fate.

Sighing in happiness, she looks over to Nicholas awaiting his answer as he takes another puff from the pipe. The grayish white smoke delicately floating away from his face. The clouds danced in the air as they faded away into nothing.

Did she, though? He'd want children in the future and to incorporate some sort of company within the family. They wouldn't be rich, but they'd live comfortably. Nicholas knew he couldn't give her everything most women wanted: a large home, luxurious comforts, etc. He'd do his damndest to become a success though. Nicholas planned on speaking with someone about his company soon, but he needed her to be OK with the possibility of him being gone.

"We can elope tonight. I can't give you an elaborate wedding, but I can get something put together in the local tavern." Truth was, he didn't even know how to set up a basic wedding. Most men didn't. The wedding was all about the woman and that's when he realized something...he didn't have a ring. Even if she couldn't have a luxurious setting, he still wanted her to have a ring. Nicholas moved to hold her in his arms and kiss her with a passion.

"I could wait. You are welcome to come and go as you please." Nicholas said, then kissed her again and sat with her by the fireplace. He held her close in his arms and went deep in thought. If the business became successful, he'd be set for life. He could pass it down to one of their children and keep it in the family.

Nicholas continued to make love to her throughout the day, but it was with a tenderness. The fireplace crackled back to life and that's when he got up to get dressed. He'd need to get to the blacksmith for their rings, then talk to a tavern owner about their wedding.

It all depended on how long she wanted to wait.

"What do you want, Jamie? I can wait. I'm still getting our rings, though." Nicholas smirked at her and noted the change of scent in the room. The ambience changed with a dramatic tone. He continued to want her throughout the day and into the night, but he knew he'd have to eventually let up. It was just part of his nature, now that he found a potential mate.

Nicholas went through his clothes in another room and came out in basic slacks, a dark gray work shirt and boots. It was a different ensemble than before, when he was dressed in leather clad. One might consider him a normal citizen, had it not been for the hidden dagger he kept close to his side for his protection.

He walked toward her and moved her close to his chest. Another kiss, but deeper. "I'll be back in a few hours. I want you to be happy with your decision, Jamie." Nicholas explained, then left her to her own devices. He had no doubt that she might grow curious about him and go through his things, but perhaps she wasn't that type of woman. Even if she did rummage through his belongings, she'd find that he was just another ordinary guy.

The only item of importance that she might find, was a list of individuals he had assassinated in the past. Although he still kept that little book, Nicholas knew she was aware of his profession. She'd have to be comfortable with his long hours and the possibility of losing a husband.

He trekked his way toward the village and began to plan the design of their rings in his head.

Jamie smiled at him " I don't need a big wedding, one at the tavern sounds wonderful." she tells him, as the day went on she was pretty happy. She watched as Nicholas left and would return in a few hours. As he left her in his home, she looked around. Shrugging she decided to do some cleaning, make the place nicer than it already was. Smiling she got up from the chair, and grabbed some cleaning supplies, she starts by dusting off everything, removing things from their location than placing them right back as she finished.

Jamie finished dusting and proceeded to sweep the floor. Which was a task that was easy and done quickly. Taking all the trash around the living area to the garage bin. Once done with that she went to the kitchen and decided to organize all his kitchen ware. Which didn't take long, she washed the ones that were a bit dusty. she liked when the dishes shinned. She smiled looking around at the living area and nice and clean. Jamie than proceeded to his bedroom, she figured might as well clean that up too. She shook her head looking around, it was a tad messy but nothing she couldn't handle. She picked up all his dirty clothes and threw them in a pile. She would do the wash later on once the bedroom was done. Pushing those to the side she stripped his bed and pillow cases which should be washed as well, also the blankets. Tossing those in a separate pile next to the clothes. She placed the pillows back neatly on the bed.

Jamie put her attention to his desk and book shelve on the far side of he room. She went through some papers and neatly stacked them on top of each other placing them on the bed for now. She grabbed a notebook, she wasn't sure what was inside. Out of curiosity she opened the book. Her ears fell back once she began to read. She had known that Nicholas was a hit man but she had no idea how many he'd actually killed so far. Her tail flicked in thought as she quickly closed the notebook and placed it along side the papers that lay on the bed. She shook her head and fixed her eye's back on the desk and began to continue to clean.

"As long as he isn't hiding anything.." She whispers to herself as she finishes cleaning the desk and places the papers and notebook back. Letting out a yawn as she left his bedroom, picking up the pile of clothes and heading to his
restroom, she plopped the clothes on the floor and filled the tub up. Jamie grabbed the soap from the kitchen and started cleaning his clothes. Once the water was all bubble she let the clothes soak for a good 20 minutes. Once the 20 minutes were over she fetched them from the tub. He didn't have a lot of clothes just a few, which she'd be able to dry inside by the fire.

Her tail flicked as she focused on getting the fire started, ears back. With a few trys the fire roars and crackles. She smiled and her ears perked up, tail wagging. She fetches the clothes and hangs them on a hook next to the opening of the fire place. She smiled and proceeded back to the other pile, grabbing it and placing them in the tub to soak for at least 30 minutes.

Jamie made her way to the kitchen and began a search for a mug and tea. Opening on of the cabinets she spots a mug, grasping it with her paws she brings it close to her as she sets it down. she pours some water into the tea pot and lets that boil. Putting the tea packet in the mug she sets it by the stove. A yawn escapes her snout as she made her way to the fire place to check on the clothes. They felt almost dry, she'd give them a few minutes before swapping them for the bed sheets.

The high pitched whistle of the kettle echoed throughout the empty house. Her ears immediately stood up. Jamie made her way back to the kitchen and poured the water in her cup, as she flicked the stove off extinguishing the flame. The aroma of the tea was pleasing to her, made her feel more at home. Taking the hot cup she went to the chair and placed it on the table in front of it. Checking the clothes, which were now dry she takes them off the hooks. Jamie folds the clothes and places them back in his room, in the drawers which they were assigned. She grabbed the sheets from the tub and placed them on the hook. Heading back to the bathroom, she drained the tub and cleaned it all out.

With a heavy sigh, Jamie was exhausted from all the cleaning she had been doing. Falling into the chair, she grabs her tea and take a long sip. Letting out another long yawn as she sets the tea back on the table, Jamie stretched out in the chair sinking deeper into it. Jamie smiled, at the thought of Nicholas she couldn't wait to spend her life with him.

Marriage.

The ultimate trap. It was a trap he hadn’t planned on putting himself in, let alone planning for a family in the future. Pinpricks of silver hue dotted the night sky, while the moon illuminated the path up ahead. The trek to the town wouldn’t take too long, but Nicholas continued to contemplate his decision. After last night, he’d be shocked if she wasn’t already with child. Women and children always cost an expense, but he didn’t want to deprive her of luxuries. Still, Nicholas wondered if he was doing the right thing. They had just met the night before, but the past few nights were one of the most passionate he had ever experienced. He shook his head in thought and watched the dull light of the moon cast eerie shadows across the pathway. He had traveled this path since he was a child. He knew every backtrail and could name every plant, or herb in the forest. Nicholas didn’t doubt his skills with his professions, but he doubted his ability to be a supportive family man and one that could be relied upon.

Nicholas stopped in his tracks and stood still, his form blended in with the abstract shadows of the night. His tail hung low, motionless, but his eyes gazed around for any movement. He thought he heard something, or maybe it was his imagination. So much was on his mind and he was only halfway on the trail. He wouldn’t see Jamie until the next night, when they would become husband and wife.

After he checked the forest for any movement, he shrugged and went about his way. He grabbed a fistfull of berries and snacked on them, then rumminated on the thoughts that continued to swirl in his mind. There was no reason for these doubts, since he knew Jamie would make an excellent wife and future mother. The hesitation was just a natural thing, since he had been living on his own since he was a teenager.

He thought back to his teenage years and he knew that their child would have a promising future. In comparison, he could give his family everything, but his profession would always come first. Nicholas wondered how Jamie would cope, when he’d be called off in the middle of the night and he wouldn’t be able to explain the reason.

Nicholas finished the last berry and felt the juices run down his dry throat. He couldn’t wait to be in the main city, since he knew of a tavern that was open late into the morning hours. It was the same tavern his father frequented and created a bad reputation for himself in. His mother was always trying to drag his father, but they were already broken for any semblance of a functioning family life. He shook his head again, then realized his thoughts on marriage, had somehow spiraled into his past.

A wife, a child, and a stable home life was more than all Nicholas needed. He’d have jobs lined up to keep them secure financially, but now he knew he needed to support Jamie, should his death come premature. She’d find a stash of money he saved up for such emergencies and contacts to help her overcome the tragedy...if it ever happened. Nicholas smirked at the thought, his ego overcoming any fear.

His change in pace quickened and he focused on the path ahead. In a few moments time, he’d be in the city and paying for an elaborate ring designed specifically for Jamie. Nicholas realized that she’d be taking his last name. Of course she would, but the thought amused him.

He watched the path lose its moonlight, but his direction was innate. He thought he could smell the food wafting from the tavern, but he knew it was his eager imagination. Nicholas could sense no beings nearby, but that didn’t mean that there wouldn’t be a surprise waiting up ahead.

A low whistle pierced the night air, a tune of some kind of a figure marching on through the darkness by their lonesome. They footsteps were mismatched, a normal crunch of boot on leaves followed by a heavy dragging noise of something that didn't work right, along with a thud of an improvised crutch.

There was a hesitation and a pause where the whistling petered out and the footsteps slowed to a stop, leaving the one responsible for both standing half-illuminated by the shine of moonlight down between the foliage that hung overhead. He was pale and couldn't have been much older than his late teens, if his complexion and height were anything to go by, but there was confidence in his stride. In his grip was a shovel, old and partly rusted but still a reliable tool in spite of its shortcomings.

"Wha's that?"

His head turned to the side, peering off in a direction away from Nicholas quite discernibly, as if he was looking right through someone who was next to him. But at the same time he seemed quick to dismiss it. A broad grin broke out on his face and he shook his head with a drawn out, "Nawwww," ending with a satisfied chuckle.

And onwards he trudged, stepping from good foot to one that was bent out of shape and leaning on the handle of his shovel for support as he continued on following the path towards town.

Nicholas twitched his ears to the sharp tune of that whistle. The sound that followed was inhuman, like the drop of a body being dragged through the forest. He stopped mid-way and smelled the air, his eyes watched around the darkened woods with a wildness to them. His nature took over and overrode his senses. The figure moved up ahead, the cheery tune dulled and came to a halt. His ears listened for the eerie thud sound and if he didn't know any better, he'd say it was from some sort of peg-leg, but he couldn't be certain. His observation skills had been proven wrong before, but the sound was too particular to be anything else, unless it was some sort of heavy tool.

He trekked further into the woods and came into view of the outline of the young man. Like some sort of spectre, the moon illuminated him for a moment. He watched him walk and decided it must have been a birth defect, or recent injury from a fight.

Either way, the young man didn't appear to be a threat. Nicholas watched him move and thanked his own lucky stars he didn't have such an issue. He shoved his hands into his pockets and felt his tail sway to his bored thoughts. He had been hoping for something more interesting than this, but a traveler didn't always get what they wanted.

Since the forest was calm and the atmosphere unchanged, he decided to slow his pace. He strolled past the young teen and saluted him with a smirk.

"Evenin," Nicholas whistled the tune he heard earlier and took his time on the trail. It was nice not having to be on guard, so he took each stride with grace.

Sunny stopped in his footsteps when he saw the man, or rather the fox man. It wasn't a sort of person he had ever seen before and a very curious sight to him. His head turned to keep an eye on Nicholas as he passed, stepping awkwardly to the side on his clubfooted leg, and he offered a nod of acknowledgement in return.

"Evenin'," the teenage gravedigger answered right back.

He was half way to letting the man going on his day when something seemed to give him a mental nudge and he rolled his eyes fondly, one hand waving off the side to chase away the invisible thought.

"Say, uh, fella. D'you know how far's town from here? Sure'm in the right direction, jes' a bit of a work for me," he answered with a thick common accent, likely not from somewhere any too busy or at least he had never seen an education.

He took himself to lean back against a tree with his bad leg stretched out, giving it a bit of a rub down.

The skies slowly darkened. It was only a matter of hours before the Golden Vale was no longer awash in a glimmering light, but instead dulled by cloud cover with barely any blue. From the south came a rumble, from deep within the mountains bordering the Golden Vale. Stronger here than it was along the northern coastline, yet still unable to be felt by those on the surface with little perception for such matter.

Down a winding cobbled road traversed a young man. He was on his way back to the Whispering Woods, with an important gift for his fellow members of the Halo clan from a local village. He didn't sense the rumble, but every hair on his body stood on end as static gathered across the valley and the clouds above charged up to strike.

What in the...z z z z z z z z z z z z z z z z z z z z z z z z z z z z z z z z z z z z z z z z z a p !

A great bolt of lighting struck down not three feet from Cendor. He had no time to prepare! The young man went flying through the air. As he tumbled through the air his form would become decidedly red, in moments transforming into a small red dragon! About the size of a male lion, the red dragon was only half able to catch his bearings, talons tearing into the ground as he tried to stabilize. His pack went flying in every direction, objects dispersing about.

Oh shi-z z z z z z z z z z z z z z z z z z z z z z z z z z z z a p !
Lightning struck at him again! Cendor again went flying, flapping desperately to catch himself again! He screeched out a string of curses.

"C'mon!" Cendor didn't have time to wait for Echo-Wolf and hoped he followed suit. The young dragon took off towards the Whispering Woods, dodging rains and lightningbolts as they struck. Somewhere along the line he must have made a detour for the worst as suddenly Cendor found himself at the edge of the great Atargatis Lake.
