Taken from a treatise on the creatures of the frontier, published by the Tirese Scholam.
The Hadram are a proud and entirely sentient species that has humble beginnings among the vaguely reptilian inhabitants of the Ferryman's Crossing, a group of systems on the spinward edge of the Confederacy's territory. While they are some way from full induction into the fold of the Lions, they exhibit a remarkable degree of cohesion and societal construction. Within the tangled web of life within the Ferryman's Crossing, they are close to the top of the food chain, overshadowed by only the hardiest of apex predators.
A typical Hadram male is around twelve feet tall, with a well developed musculature. Four arms hang from the upper part of his torso, the larger set emerging from the shoulders, falling to his mid-thigh. The secondary set protrude from the rib-cage, shoulder-joints merging with the pectoral muscles to form a thick band of twisted muscle across the vital organs. These hands end in brawny, five fingered hands with two opposable thumb-digits crossing the palm.
The Hadram's legs are long and coiled with muscle, built for high-speed endurance running and short distances charges. The skinny limbs bulge around the knees, tapering to the broad feet, complete with nimble toes, capable of grasping onto branches and other objects.
Facially, the Hadram is rather striking. A heavy, bony brow ridge shadowing dark, expressive eyes. Slit-like nostrils dot the broad curve of the nasal region, ending at a wide, slit-like mouth filled with flat, stubby teeth. A pair of curved tusks project from the hollows created by the high cheekbones, bony trunks falling to just below the jawline, before projecting out again in a razor sharp curve.
The Hadram's skin is thick and leathery, often a dull green or brown in colouration. It appears resistant to shallow cuts and cushions physical impacts well. Combined with their extraordinary bone density, an Alpha male Hadram is incredibly resistant to injury, only high-velocity projectiles or massively strong blows able to injure them seriously.
On the primitive manufacturing of frontier tribes, an essay by Forzar Balien.
The Hadram tribes of Ferryman's Crossing exhibit a remarkable degree of skill for beings of their intelligence. Not only are they able to mine and refine mineral ores dug out from open cast quarries deep on the eastern plains, but they seem to be able to forge it into primitive weapons and pieces of armour, giving them an advantage against predator and prey.
The primary weapons created often double as tools; broad bladed axes and cleavers that can cut down trees or butcher carcases, spears that form the centre pole of tents and multipurpose blades that can skin a carcass whilst severing limbs with a well-placed blow.
Ranged weapons take the form of tall bows cut from the heartwood of Tallix trees, the staves standing as tall as the Hadram firing it. The arrows are the length of a man's arm, tipped with broad barbs designed to cause massive bleeding and tissue damage.
Other means of engaging at range are iron-headed javelins with flat, spatula points designed to pierce primitive armour, and leather knot-work slings, flinging smooth stones or bullets of metal designed to stun or shatter limbs.
Armour among the Hadram is a primitive affair, created from the hide of thick, scaly beasts stitched into loose fitting hauberks, with boots and vambraces to match. More senior tribe members augment these trappings with shirts of ring-mail and simple iron plates, reinforcing the more vulnerable parts of the leather. Helmets are common, sweeping Corinthian designs with face-plates that flare out around the tusks, with a broad nose-guard that adds some definition to the Hadram's flat face. The helmet is crested by a plume of Vadda hair, dyed in the colour of the tribe, falling to the small of the wearer's back.
Excerpt from Flora and Fauna of Ferryman's Crossing; The creatures of the Hadram.
The Hadram are a very mobile people, never staying in a place for more than a few months, thus they rely heavily on pack animals and riding beasts.
Their primary pack animal is the Atta, an eight-legged pachyderm with a broad, humped back and a thick neck, terminating in a stubby head carrying a pair of wickedly curved horns. The Atta are mostly used to lug the majority of the camp, with tents and supplies being lashed to their backs, along with a three or four person saddle for passengers. In some of the more affluent tribes, the Atta form the basis for heavy cavalry squadrons, armoured in ring or scale mail barding, bearing archers and slingers on their backs.
Another beast tamed by the Hadram is the Vadda, a seventeen foot canine with four reverse jointed legs, covered in layers of thick, matted hide and wiry muscle. It's jaw appears distended and unnatural, filled with rows of serrated teeth, designed to strip meat off the bone. Six eyes glare from the Vadda's skull, recessed behind the elongated snout. Heat sensitive pits cover the snout, merging into lateral lines that trace the spine down to the spatula tail, allowing it to sense the electromagnetic energy of an animal in distress. The Hadram fit them with thick leather saddles, clinging onto their backs as the beasts hurtle forward in a headlong charge, slings and lances in their hands.
