John the Adventurer

Once the greatest hero in creation, now merely a shadow of his former glory. Despite this, he is not willing to give up his role of wandering guardian quite yet.

Description

Physical description:
John is about six foot five, and is the very definition of a beanpole. Once he could be called wiry, but since his retirement he has lost his former muscle tone and become, as the Eleventh Doctor would say, "proper skinny". His apparent age is deceptive, as he looks to be in his early twenties until you look into his eyes, which have seen centuries of joy and madness alike. He has a handsome face with short dirty-blonde hair and strange golden eyes that almost seem to glow faintly when in shadow, and skin that is surprisingly white for someone that has spent most of his life in a scorching desert. He always appears wearing red and gold, whether that means simply wearing a red t-shirt and a gold ring on his hand, a bright red suit with a golden tie, or in times of dire danger, his old suit of golden armor and crimson cloak.

Personality:
John has always been the jovial sort, the first to crack a joke and the first to laugh at situations many would not deem humorous, though this has been dulled somewhat by time and recent circumstances. He is clever, able to see things differently than most, an attribute that has enabled him to find solutions few others would have thought of. John is much older than he appears, and sometimes (more and more often, as of late) one can see that he is tired, in his bones and in his soul. Tired of war, of chaos, tired of fighting. But John will always be a hero at heart, unable to resist the call when someone, whether he knows them or not, is in danger. He has an open heart, and is quick to make friends, and even quicker to rain down retribution on those who hurt those friends. While no longer the nigh-unstoppable force of magic he once was, he can fall victim to the sin of pride, a fault he recognizes and seeks to change. John is a man of faith, and believes strongly in both God and his friends, always certain that in the end, no matter how bad it gets, everything will turn out for the better.

Equipment and Abilities:
Once nearly godlike in his power, in order to save his world one last time, he gave that power up. For a while, he believed his power to be gone entirely. Recently, he discovered his power was not as completely gone as he supposed. John's powers are magical in nature, though certain of his more scientific-minded friends have described it as "possessing a connection to an interdimensional energy field that enables limited manipulation of reality". He can conjure items from nothing, generate blasts of pure magical energy, create force fields, teleport, enhance his physical capabilities, and control natural elements, though on a much smaller scale than he once could. What makes him special however is his ability to breach the boundaries of universes and walk between them, with his many travels between universes giving him the title of "Adventurer". How he has recovered this small fraction of his magical power is a mystery to him, but it is a mystery that he is determined to solve.

Historical Background:
John is from Earth, specifically Earth Prime, the first and central earth, a world where science is the predominant force, while magic is a thing known only in the distant past through ancient myths and legends, where superhumans, aliens, sentient machines, and other fantastical things are only known in fiction. However, John was different. John was special. John was just a child when he first came into contact with magic. He was on an elementary school field trip when he met a tiny woman, glowing with multicolored lights and born aloft by tiny butterfly-like wings, who none of the other children could see. Dubbing the creature Pixie, they quickly became friends, and Pixie taught him how to open his mind to the hidden realms of magic. This was all a wonderful game at first, but when the rulers of the magical realms learned that a human walked their world for the first time in centuries, they took notice. John found himself the center of a magical war before finishing elementary school, temporarily becoming the champion of the Faerie Queen of Spring. He grew up quickly in this time, facing evil at a much younger age than any should, quickly becoming a master of magic. He lived a double life, switching between battling magical creatures and traveling through mystical realms to going to school at his home in Las Vegas.

Eventually John became his own master, leaving the employ of the Queen of Spring and using his growing power to proclaim himself apart from any faction, and no longer a tool to be used. Years passed, and he learned new ways to use his magic, until he discovered a way to open a portal to a different universe entirely. He found himself in a universe so unlike his own, an earth where magic was common, and magical beings roamed the world freely. There he fell in love with the queen of the land, a beautiful sorceress that had once feared her power. Together they defeated many threats to their home, from demons of fear and shadow to scheming princes, until John was forced to leave to repair the damage his tearing of the dimensional fabric had caused. He later learned to safely traverse the worlds, and returned to his love, as well as going on many wild adventures across countless universes, making friends and enemies along the way and earning the title of the Adventurer. Over the course of years he saved his own universe on several occasions, as well as various others, and gained the title of Godslayer by slaying all of the pagan deities of his world.

Then, something changed. The universe was threatened again, this time by something that not even John's great power could stop. In his travels he had become more and more powerful as he absorbed magic from each universe he visited, as well as power from the mysterious Void between universes. He had become an Anomaly, one so powerful that it was tearing his world apart. The only way to save his world was to give up his power willingly, which would mean leaving the love of his wife forever, as well as their two children. But what other choice did he have? So he gave up his power and returned to an ordinary life, without magic, without adventure, and without his love. Then, one day, he felt a spark. Just the tiniest bit of magic returned to him. Not enough to return to the woman he loved, not by far, but enough for him to go back out into the Multiverse and uncover this new mystery. And maybe, just maybe, he can find a way to get more power, enough to return to the world he left behind.

So begins...

John looked around him as he walked in, his golden eyes gleaming as they took in everything around him. It had taken him most of his energy to get to this place, and he had no idea what this place even was. Wherever he was, it must have been somewhere at least somewhat out of normal spacetime, probably a pocket dimension of some kind, as this was his first successful reality jump since getting a small fraction of his power back. Crossing through the dimensional barrier entirely was apparently still out of his reach. For now. Usually though, pocket dimensions were the kind of places he would stumble across a mystical fortress or treasure vault, or even the domain of some alien being with delusions of godhood, not a bar.

While not much of a fan of alcohol, John knew that bars, even, or perhaps especially, interdimensional ones, were usually the best places to gather information, which was exactly what he needed to do. Whenever finding yourself in an unfamiliar corner of the multiverse, it was always good sense to find your bearings as soon as possible. So he strode over to the bar, his long strides making short work of the trip, finding himself a seat away from what was probably the strangest looking Gnoll he had ever encountered. He had experiences with Gnolls in the past of course, several varieties, in fact. However, he had never seen such a... well dressed Gnoll. It was curious. What kind of universe had he found himself in? He gave the skull-topped staff a suspicious glance before turning to the bartender. "What do you have that you'd recommend?" He asked. "Taste-wise, I mean. I'm not a fan of loosening my inhibitions."

Turning to the Gnoll, he gave the creature a smile. No need to make too many assumptions before the other man had even had a chance to speak. "So what brings you here friend?" he asked. "Are you a local, or just a traveler like myself?"

While Fangspirit was somewhat unwelcoming, he wasn't necessarily unfriendly. He just was too familiar with the attention he typically brought and pulled away from it. At John's words he at first tugged away, as if to shun the man, but begrudgingly turned about to look at him with yellow eyes. "Tra'heler. I lihh uhh..." he trailed off, mumbling to himself as he pointed towards the general direction of 'away from the city'. Sometimes he felt it was futile to try and speak.

Still, a partly civil upbringing prompted him to respond, and engage the man further. "Hyou?" he asked with his mouth forming an 'o' shape to try and force the sound out from his throat. His eyes passed over John, peering along his clothing and posture to best judge if he was friendly or quite intimidating. Unfortunately he was a bad judge of character about anything that didn't have hackles and pointed ears atop their heads. Such things better expressed emotions than narrow human features.

The Gnoll's words weren't easy to understand, but John had heard worse. "Always nice to meet a fellow wanderer," John replied. "I'm just arrived here myself. I'm... not exactly from around these parts. I'd say just how far away, but regular spacial dimensions can't really explain..." John turned as he heard a sound, almost spilling his drink all over his red t-shirt and maroon jacket as he did so. He silently cursed his clumsiness as he barely caught the drink in time, looking to see what had made everyone in the bar suddenly go quiet. He looked the woman over and could tell immediately that she belonged to some sort of government or military. She had that feel about her that only feds and soldiers had. Plus, the uniform, while not one he recognized, was still a dead giveaway.

Unfortunately John didn't know enough about this universe to know what exactly about that uniform made everyone go silent, and his magical senses weren't what they used to be. Not that he had ever really been that good of a telepath. He always compared him entering someone else's mind to driving a tank through a china shop, so he usually didn't try too hard to get into people's heads. He pondered the question for a moment before turning back around to talk to the Gnoll. He may not be up to going toe-to-toe with a god anymore, but he was certain he could handle soldier lady without too much trouble if it came down to that.

"Let's just say I'm not from anywhere you'd likely know the name of," he finished. He took his drink and waved his fingers over it, messing about with the molecules in the drink to remove any alcohol that might have been in there before taking a drink. He grimaced, the taste very different than he had expected. Either the bartender had a very different idea of what it meant for something to taste good, or removing the alcohol from the beverage had some unexpected side effects.

The bar remained fairly quiet for a few moments, as eyes followed the woman while she made her way through the bar. It was only after a few moments that people seemed to start going back to their conversations.

It wasn't so much that the woman herself was in any way threatening, though she walked with a purpose, and the precision that only someone with a fair deal of military training could do; it was the uniform she wore. A high collared dark grey jacket trimmed with dark blue shoulders, and pocket flaps. Diamond-shaped rank insignia was worn on the black, high collar, along with a few medals of merit; the final accessory was a polished leather sam browne style belt, a wide leather belt supported diagonally by a narrower leather belt that passed diagonally over the right shoulder. This supported a polished leather holster, where her weapon, a type twenty-three disruptor pistol was securely holstered.

The crowd finally started to return to normal, and Elanna slowly moved into a bar-stool next to John, and the Gnoll.

"I'll have an ambrosia on ice." She said, her accent lilting some of her words, while placing two square banknotes on the bar.

She crossed one leg over another, and took the emerald green beverage that was handed to her while casting a glance to her new neighbors.

She knew why the bar went quiet, everyone knew what she was, what her uniform symbolized; decades of violent, brutal oppression, decades of war, it was hard to find someone who hadn't lost at least one family member to the brutality of the Aschen Empire.

Elanna dismissed the notion, and focused upon her drink.

A part of him wanted to ignore the newcomer. He didn't like military-types. Guns were far better at starting problems than stopping them. Then again, the same could be said about magic. He shook his head, laughing silently at the thought. True, magic was more than capable of causing plenty of trouble. It didn't change the fact that he didn't like guns, and he definitely didn't like military-types, especially when their very presence makes a room go silent. While a good chunk of him wanted to ignore her, put her in her place, or in some other way gratify his pride, he let go of his pride and decided to be nice instead. Being nice was usually a better course of action than conflict, and besides, she could be a good source of information for him.

Turning away from his new gnoll friend for a moment, John smiled at the newcomer, giving her a nod. "Nice to meet you miss, though I'm surprised to see a girl like you in a place like this. You look like you would be more comfortable in a mission briefing than a bar. What kind of uniform would that be that you are wearing?"

The sounds of ice rattling in the glass echoed as she sipped her drink. Slowly, she turned towards the man who addressed her, a brief look of confusion playing across her face.

'What kind of uniform would that be you are wearing?'

The words rang in Elanna's mind, and she raised one eyebrow at the newcomer, before she slowly placed her drink on the counter with a soft but audible clink of glass.

"A girl like me in a place like this; surely an officer of the Imperial Navy can enjoy a drink once in awhile while off duty." She commented, the odd, almost Latin sounding accent once again lilting her words.

"This is the uniform of the United Aschen Empire." Elanna replied. "I'm the commander of the embassy garrison for the Empire." She added. "I'm surprised though, Empire's been in and around this world for decades, it's awful hard for someone to not have heard of us; where are you from?" She asked, a soft smile gracing her lips.

John couldn't help but chuckle at that question. He couldn't count how many times he had been asked that question, or some variation thereof, in his too-long life even if he wanted to. Where was he from? Who was he? Why was he there? Well, at least this time it didn't look like this universe was on the verge of total devastation. He was getting too old for that sort of thing, though he didn't look it.

He shook his head, refocusing on the moment. This was no time to get lost in the past. "I'm not from anywhere you would have heard of," he answered, his golden eyes glowing faintly, smiling as if he had said an inside joke intended only for himself. "A little world, far from the ambitions of galactic empires and machinations of alien powers. I'm just a humble traveler, finding myself in a new realm and curious to learn more of this new setting."

Elanna was taken back for a moment, at the clear evasion of her question, but she dismissed it with a smile, and a brief, and small sip of her drink. "My people have mapped most of the known galaxy, constantly updating for stellar drift, and comparing with the old star charts from Lantea's computer banks." She said, placing the glass down on the bar.

"We're a people who faced three exoduses." She explained, while wrapping her fingers around the glass. "Ancient colonies, the holy land, Kobol, and a little planet somewhere in the fringes of the Galaxy that we've yet to find. It would be a boon if our home was far from the ambitions of empires; but alas we are forced to secure our own interests."

The sound of ice in glass carried from her drink, and she heaved a sigh.

"My people, and the people of this world share a long, bloody history."
