Description

Winglies look much the same as humans but all Winglies have platinum colored hair and wings of light that only appear when a wingly uses them or casts magic. They are highly skilled in magic of all kinds. Winglies are wary of other races and are slow to trust others.

Winglies are divided into city states. Each state consists of a floating sky city and the land below. The Winglies are run by a Council that has a single member from each city (minus Mayfil as only the dead live there). Wingly cities are traveled between by teleporters and airships.

The City states

Aglis: This city floats above the Empyrean Sea. It is known as the Magic City and is home too many places of magical study. It is also where magical creatures are bred and studied.

Zenebatos: This city floats within the Exalted Mountains. It is known as the Law City. It is here that criminals are taken to be judged and imprisoned...or executed.

Crystal Palace: Floating above the Whispering Woods is this holy temple city. Also known as the Life City. It is believed that it is from here that the Wingly goddess known as the Archangel sends forth the soul of each newborn Wingly.

Mayfil: Floating over the Sapphire Desert is the necropolis of Mayfil. It is here that the Wingly dead are laid to rest and thier souls judged by the Archangel.

Kadessa: Floating above the Golden Valley is the largest of the Wingly cities. It is the Capital of the Confederation and the main military base.

Ulara: Hidden somewhere in the Sapphire Desert this city's main goal is to keep watch over the Death City Mayfil and as a site to test new weapons in secret.

So begins...

After a brief stop to resupply in the City of Zenebatos the Wingly airship Dragon's Bane landed in front of the entrance to the mines. From the ship came Wingly warriors and mages led by the great Wingly general Lenu Fahua.

"Alright boys and girls you all know why we are here." Spoke Lenu "Our orders are to explore this old mine and find out if it is of use to us. Veru and Llyia your squads will stay here and set up base camp as well as guard the entrance. The rest of you are with me."

The two squads left behind started on the camp as the rest of the army marched into the dark mine.

Magical light filled the mine as the wingly mages formed orbs of light from thier staffs. Some of these orbs would fly forward into the mine lighting the path before them.

"This mine is well built ma'am so far no signs of rot or decay." Reported a Wingly.

"Good" replied Lenu "I want four scouts and a mage up thirty feet ahead of the main group should you run into trouble call back on your communicator."

The scout group went ahead but it wasn't long before a small beep was heard. Lenu pulled out her magic communicator which to any other race would look like nothing more then a shiny white stone. "Report." Lenu ordered.

Over the communicator a voice came, " Ma'am we have come to a fork in the path you should probably check this out."

After a short walk the main group caught up with the scouts. Lenu examined the area for a few moments before saying, " Checkpoint one will be set up here get on it boys and girls."

Meanwhile outside the mine the camp began to take shape tents and defenses being set up for the Wingly army.

"Ma'am we have a message from the High council. Something strange has happened in the near by mountains Two airships are on route to pick you up they want you on this" said a Wingly knight

Lenu sighed " Very well... Split into two groups and explore the rest of the mines...I want good news when I get back"

Lenu pulled out a small blue Stone and after muttering she vanished from the mine.

Lenu appeared on the bridge of the Wingly Airship Angel's Wrath. Beside it a smaller Wingly Airship known as the Storm Maiden hovered.

"Ma'am forgive me for calling you from your..." Started the captain

"Don't worry about it give me a report." Interrupted Lenu

" Well ma'am it is hard to explain...all we know is that there was a bright flash and the mountain was well changed."

Lenu frowned and was silent for a moment before speaking. " Take us in closer have all hands ready for battle."

The two Wingly airships came to life, thier magical engines roaring as they pushed toward the strange mountain.

Jorn continued to look out towards the mountain range that exploded only to reach into a pocket and produce a small strange stone figurine in the shape of a bird. He whispered to the carved bird only to give it life and watch as it began to fly off towards a locale outpost only to smile as his orders had been well received.

Several dwarven members of Jorn's house upon receiving the stone bird and the message began to move into action as their stone ships ignited with flaming rings only to raise up into the air above with heavy ballista's armed and ready whilst dwarven rune priests and mages prepared their defensive spells as the stone interior and the warriors aboard began to shimmer with spell work and prayers. Eight of the massive 1,123 foot stone vessels appeared to have been torn from the mountainside itself as moss and small trees seemed to fall or be burned by the fire elementals that had been bound to the massive flaming wheel in order to give the ships flight.

"Indeed Malad, agreed, Tell me if you would rather have the battalion of armed men to escort you to witness the beast or would you rather stay by my side and see more that these people have to show us?" Regardless of the option he gave his tinkerer Jorn waved his hand to Torggrim and sent the warrior on his way with a few of the musket men right along with Thane Riak Steelheart. Such creatures need to be removed from the range that the dwarves empire as they posed a threat to every life around but to those of lesser creatures also.

"Now as for those questions. How in all the time my people have come to be have we not come across yours?" Jorn gripped his cane tightly only to allow his arcane gaze to befall the tall elder before him only to wonder what kind of answer he would be given.

Kardel switched his stave between his hands before he spoke “I wonder myself, but you must have come across other Forges, belonging to the now extinct clans of we builders?” he glanced to the guardian to his left looking up at the magical soulbound construct. “much of our history was lost or destroyed in the time since the catastrophe, and well, I wouldn’t be surprised if some of the Forges were lost due to nature’s whims” Kardel then went on to think about the question on the strength of the Forge’s walls “much of the forge and our mountain is imbued in someway with magic to ensure its continued existence. Enough to stop dragon magic, we’ve never had to put that to the test thankfully”

There was no sadness to his voice, just a calm thoughtful demeanor, the Builders, Realm forgers, were a race of people from a bygone age. The Elder watched the Eight dwarven skyships take to the sky, those that were within view, that is.

“your mastery over magic and binding is Impressive, awe inspiring, really” the Elder looked to the cleared debris and walked to approach it, brushing smaller pieces of rubble aside, to produce a piece of face mask that indistinguishably belonged to some ancient forgotten construct, he set the mask back down and turned his attention back to the guests.

“The world was a different creature before we closed ourselves off, these floating mountain ranges were not so large” Kardel had a look of reminiscence in his eyes, as if he remembered how the world used to look.

Riak had slowed his pace enough that the dwarven warriors accompanying him could keep up with his much larger strides, Riak glanced back to the warrior who looked to be leading the group of dwarves.“What can you tell me of the dragons of this age? If anything. If the world has changed as much as i believe it has then so might have the Dragon’s laws”

He watched the dwarven ships take off, and smirked, thinking to himself These Dwarves really are masters of construction also. He’d come to a stop at a set of divergent paths looking across them, he’d wait on the dwarves before continuing down a path, they know the mountains better than him, and neither he nor they needed Riak getting lost down some path into the middle of nowhere.

Malad turned to his lord to shake a dour expression while turning his goggles back to normal, "By your side even through hells. Dragon magic is a spectacle and a threat, nothing more, until I've tools to employ it myself. They should worry for either event."

He took in the elder's assessment pursing a hand through his auburn beard pondering siege methods, "So, reinforced by magic, eh? Well. There's no better way to develop the untested than to try and break it by foreign shores. Always learning to look forward to."

The dwarf turned toward where the elder commented on the ships, "Traditional, sturdy, big thick doors, and well tested. Makes for good reliability, yeah?"

"But careful there, stare at bright ol' reliable pasts longer than need be and you'll go blind. Even if you think not.", he added with a smile.

Two more airships joined the Angel's Wrath and Storm Maiden bringing the Wingly force up to four Airships. With the new ship came two Virages. Virage where large powerful magical creatures created by the Winglies. These creatures can use magic and shoot magical laser like rays from thier eyes. They while much faster and more agile than an airships and could easily take one down if it had to.

It didn't take long for the Wingly fleet to spot the Dwarf airships. The Wingly airships moved within hailing distance of the Dwarf fleet. The Virages flew in a orbit around the Wingly fleet.

Lenu stepped forward on the deck of the Angel's Wrath. Using magic to amplify her voice she spoke, "I am General Lenu Fahua of the Kadessa Confederation. We mean you no harm. In fact, I'm assuming we are both here for the same reason.... The strange occurrence with this mountain?"

The tunnels bellow inhabited by dwarven workers and families would find themselves left in Chaos as the massive dragon off in the distance provided not even a single care for the damage it had caused as tunnels bellow collapsed from the immense weight or flooded with either magma or water. Countless lives had been lost though luckily the main fortified city bellow and above continued on as Dwarven warriors of all casts took up their axes and sharpened their swords. The Arcane Airship captains from across the mountain range all seemed to act accourdingly as the mountain itself seemed to come alive with flaming rings and floating mountain tops suddenly coming to life with strange glyphs that bound the elementals to their proper place.

"I am General Lenu Fahua of the Kadessa Confederation. We mean you no harm. In fact, I'm assuming we are both here for the same reason.... The strange occurrence with this mountain?"

The Dwarven Airships nearby began to hum as the fire elementals burned angrily while the dwarven clerics and wizards prepared themselves and their charges for war. It was only when one of the captains cought wind of the amplified shouting of the new arrivals that he drew forth his sword and pointed it forward towards the massive beast that could been seen for miles upon miles away. "We fight for our people!" The dwarven airship captain shouted only to take up his position at the helm with several wizards and clerics who continued to monitor the elementals bound to the ship preventing them from escaping and sending the crew plummeting bellow.

Riak may have slowed his pace for the dwarven warriors but Master Argaald was not one to be kept in the dust as he made his way up next to the giant of a man. The others behind kept the march easily enough and with their rifles in hand and the ammunition they would need many would imagine that they had been brave enough to walk towards their most certain demise.

"The Dragons....." Torggrim muttered his response as he continued to keep pace. "They are a unruly lot. Dragons come in two varieties in my experience, Chromatic and Metallic, though they are never that big!" The master dwarf stopped only to point out a old rocky trail just to then wave his battalion to follow behind him. "As for their laws I'd imagine that anything that can eat me rarely cares for what is right or just. I've fought in several wars but rarely have I ever encountered anything like this...."

Meanwhile Jorn and Malad continued to speak with the elder, Kardal Steelheart. The silver haired dwarven transmuter simply nodded at the compliment the giant had only to look off towards the massive beast in the distance.

"It was a design I've cherished honestly. The ships are normally created from a special wood and treated with magic and rare alchemical reagents while the mechanism that binds the elementals in place is based on a modified theory I've been working on. Many people have said I'm a monster for binding the will of elemental creatures from their prospective planes to these devices but I say they are simply tools readily available for those who look hard enough." Jorn gripped his cane only to then turn his back towards Malad and Elder Kardal. The dwarven lord hoped his holdings remained unharmed as such a creature would likely cause massive amounts of damage just by existing due to its size.

"I'm willing to wager that such a creature is from another realm, perhaps the heavens above......" Jorn muttered his words only to then look back at his host. "No one is safe. So long as this creature remains able to sit upon my lands and slaughter my people, our people!"

Riak followed along the path Torggrim had pointed towards, careful with his footing, as he ran across the mountain trails. Glancing towards the leader of the dwarven troop Riak spoke up "Aye, even thirteen thousand years back the dragons were never that big." p Pulling the flintlock pistol sized for him; more like a small handheld cannon, and began to prep it for use, though he'd not load in any ammo else it would all spill out from the barrel, dropping the pistol back into its leather holster, his attention turned back towards the risen ships as they moved forth.

this filled Riak with dread, sure he was a warrior, but a battle with dragons was for all intents and purposes suicide, though, the Builder, Riak, wasn't even aware of the extent of the industrial power of the dwarven realms. "each landing that dragon makes, is an earthquake to contend with" he shook his head and sighed "lets hope it doesn't decide to do it again"
____________________________________________

"you say the dragons slaughter your people?" Kardal gave a calm yet serious expression and leaned onto the staff "we are creators, not destroyers, balance in all things, My son is that balance to our people's creation, he is a destroyer one may say" he pushed off the staff and looked to the mountains in the distance "but I must agree, its presence endangers your people greatly and posses a danger to my few people also" Kardal stepped forward finally stepping out beyond the doorway and onto the path leading up to the gateway.

Little did the lost ones know they while just a few miles from a great oasis. So close to it's life saving waters... Too close... For within the oasis stood the hidden city of Ulara. A city the Kadessa Confederation wished to stay hidden.

So out of the shadows appear figures. The looked human but with Platinum colored hair. The figures phased in and out like an illusion or perhaps a phantom....

"Turn Back!" Warned a chorus of voices. "Turn Back or Die!"

A bolt of light would strike near the lost ones. A warning....

The giant falcon was unsettled by the lightning bolt, dancing backward from where it perched. Kanazair narrowed his brow. Dhodrimme was convinced it was time to take their leave.

"Not so fast," Murmered Kanazair. What where these odd figures? With hair like light, perhaps they were native elves of this region.

On cue, Dhodrimme called a greeting from his native tongue. The falcon spread it's wings.

A masked female figure flew forward wings of light shining from her back as daggers danced in the desert air around her. The other figures soon joined her forming wings of light like hers as they took position behind her.

"Leave now or die!" She commanded her voice magically altered to sound as if many spoke at once.

"Leave Now! Leave now!" The others behind her chanted as orbs of flame or weapons appeared in thier hands.

Feraspar began to grow very, very large at the sight of the flying knives. With one great beating of his wings, Feraspar the falcon brought Dhodrimme and Kanazair to the skies. They rose high, high above the desert, just before Gaia's natural curvature would present herself as anything but flat.

"What is that?!" Kanazair shouted above the air whipping around them. Dhodrimme didn't answer. He feared what would conjure such measures to keep them away from a spot clearly marked on their map.

"Much has changed," Dhodrimme squinted into a sun. He then cast his gaze down below, to where they came from, cautious for what might happen next. These were not the sands of his youth, full of mystery and wonder. They were new sands. Sands changed with time. Sands that might prove scary for even an elven prince.

Malad looked backward toward the other dwarves gesturing to one with a small bundle. The dwarf hurried up to deliver the arm-sized package to Malad. Set upon the floor plain leather unwrapped to reveal four small tripods, a smaller receptacle, and a set of bone-dust conduits wrapped in cloth tipped in silver clips. He removed and pressed a clasp to flip out the legs of each of the four small tripods where at their top, inside runed lead-antimony metal triple helix, glows a soft green feldspar crystal.

Malad set the receptacle at the center of the square then clipped the tripods to each other. The feldspars flickered for a moment then pulsed in time with their four counterparts back in his lab. He tossed his journal in the volume which took a place hovering above the receptacle. He stood up taking a small bag up with him. Digging out a few small ceramic stones he flicks them into orbit.

He offered the small bag of divination stones to Jorn gesturing to a few small white crystal keys inside and took one for himself. A key needed to see where the orbiting stones shone small illusory terrain of their mountain inside the volume. There were even small moving red flows where lava followed tunnels that the totems crawled awareness through the stone's skin.

He gestured to the volume, "Danger indeed. My network of totems doesn't extend too far from the mountain. At least above ground. I trust you know what kind of knowledge each rune seeks to shape the divination. Ceramic totems under lava should still work for a few days until they finally melt."

He bent down to look under the mountain where red lines flow upward until cut off abruptly, "Deep reach quarters already off awareness. Probably melted already. Looks like the new melt-triggered bulkheads slammed shut. That's the right locations for it. Or somebody read my safety manuals for once and triggered them before the lava got there."

"Dragons..." Came a disgusted voice.

The Winglies hated dragons due to a war with them many, many years ago. A war few would even remember.

Lenu huffed letting the enchantment fade from her voice as she turned back to her men. Pointing to one she said, " you head to Kadessa tell the high council we need more Airships and Virages.... Also tell them we need the Dragon Busters and Block Staffs"

The man nodded and headed to the teleporter as Lenu continued. "The rest of you battle stations I'm going to see if I can a face to face with our new dwarf friends...."

Lenu again amplified her voice calling over to the Dwarf ships "I request permission to teleport aboard your flagship I wish to speak with your commander face to face to discuss the coming battle."

The dwarven captain knew far to well that the Draconic threat needed to be dealt with. The mages aboard the arcane airships had received their orders and sent several Snapdragon Fireworks up high into the sky allowing the multifaceted magical firework to explode into several facsimile dragons which snapped into several flares.

Whenever Lenu would transport over she would be greeted by a fiery haired dwarf in stony armor and a Urgrosh in hand. "Welcome aboard! You're in my peoples empire now so I'll ignore the fact that those ships arrived without any notice. We have larger problems at hand."

Upon the ground bellow Jorn took up a few of the divining crystals only to toss them once he gave them an ample charge. Several of the runes found their place just fine whilst other fell upon the board with little to no charge.

"Several of the holding chambers are gone. The lost life is astonishing...."

As gravity continued to take hold on the Ryoko-Maru, her Captain tried his best to maintain control of the situation, but the ship was in total freefall, and breaking up as the atmosphere tore it asunder.

To those on the ground this would appear as a brilliant streak of light in the sky, breaking up into multiple smaller streaks of light.

A deafening boom rang all throughout the exalted mountains, and the ship broke up into even smaller pieces, the intense heat cooking off munitions, which culminated into smaller explosions.

Debris rained down in a hundred mile streak of nanosteel, ship pieces, and metal fragments, the Taiyou cruiser had completely broken up.

A rumbling sound, accompanied by howls of wind and rushing air, preluded a sudden quake that rippled through the earth and shuddered the dwarven city.

Then, like a curious child peering down into a teeming anthill, Highlord Dorant Magthulia craned his neck and peered down among the mountains at the Dwarves and their gathered forces. He blinked twice, and then said "My word, how interesting. I did not think this place was inhabited, and yet there are thousands of you down here."

He sniffed the air, the inhalations bringing a sudden vortex that snapped anything lighter than a dwarf and not nailed down into the air, before his exhalation brought a hot and humid breath down with the pressure of a waterfall upon their heads.

"Watch them and make sure they leave..." Ordered Meru.

In response a new type of Wingly Airship was launched off. This ship was smaller than most other Wingly Airships but had a powerful new feature...
This new ship had a magic cloak that would keep it invisible to all but the most trained eye. The Ship aptly named Mist Shroud would move to shadow the bird and elves making sure they where truly leaving.

Feraspar felt movements in the air, noticed it shifting around a shape that was headed straight for them. He sent the image to Dhodrimme, who gave one of his enlarged feathers a light squeeze with his hand.

The bird snapped in his wings and dove, spiraling beak first for the sands. Right before he hit the dunes Feraspar pulled out from his dive and shot forward! A rainbow glimmered from the feathers on his crown, down his back, and fanned out across his tail. In an instant he, too, was invisible, skimming stealthily along the ground far, far below the airship towards the Oasis.

He could smell the Oasis on the wind. Kanazair grinned and whooped, immediately elbowed by Dhodrimme. This wasn't good! They had to hit the Oasis to refresh before the next leg of their trip.

Jorn watched as Elder Kardel took up the defensive and activated a strange magical barrier in order to protect them and his kin from the falling ship. However this did not deter Jorn from examining the spellwork that the Elder and the golems provided nor would it prevent him from looking down at the divinatory board that Malad had provided.

"No I understand. However, fear not for my kin, my peoples city is deep within the rock and dirt and metal and stone hold most of it safely within the arms of this world." Jorn gripped the head of his cane tightly as he began to think of Torggrim and what danger his ranger would face. "Malad we will need to call the council in order to deal with the damages once this is all over." Jorn looked back out towards the massive dragon only to feel shocked suddenly as the massive dragon in the background of his mountain suddenly seemed to vanish from sight.

Torggrim on the other hand took cover near a cave entrance which would have a tunnel leading to the city bellow along with the rest of his men only to wave the giant Riak over frantically. "Come on!" The dwarf shouted as he gritted his teeth and watched as a thing began to plummet from the sky and a massive dragon which could only be counted as the end of all things. "We need too take cover deep within the tunnels!"

As for the Dwarven Airships the captain aboard the primary vessel watched as horror as something fell from the sky above and the massive dragon seemed to shrink down to almost nothing before his very eyes. The dwarves would face trails far beyond most within the realms of men or elf alike.

To all who had witnessed it, the massive ancient dragon Dorant Magthulia would have seemed to vanish instantly in a brilliant flare of light.

This however was not the case. Far above their heads, where the dragons own had once been, there fell from the sky a small and frail appearing humanoid form.

For most, falling from such a great and terrible height would be a terrifying experience, but should any have been able to hear his words, they would think the man insane.

"Most curious... I would have thought the transformation would be slow, perhaps even painfully so, but no. Furthermore it appears that all the energy of my being has indeed remained within my grasp, although not within my body. My mass is no longer the same as it was, leading me to believe it has been converted to an energy state, which makes sense. Perhaps the most perplexing is, surprisingly, the lack of my tail. So strange to think something I live my whole life with, to the point of forgetting it's presence, is no longer there. Walking will be rather difficult I think, I'll have to compensate for the lack of counter balance that it provided. Flight will be a bit more laborious now I think, having no wings. I'll have to rely on magical conveyance for that now I suppose. Hmmmm I wonder how I change back."

This is only a sample of the ramblings of the old man who fell from the sky down upon the gates of the dwarven city, teeming with their forces as it was.

It was a long way up the mountain, and the path was rather dusty, and it was the perfect temperature and temperament of wind for a nap. The black cat stretched, ambling towards a rock half shaded by one of the many grand trees about. He flopped himself comfortable. Yes, a perfect time for a nap.

Up the path came a whistle; soon followed by a short man. He carried on his back a pack and a guitar. The tune wasn't somber, but it wasn't anything happy either. Perhaps he, too, had noted how dusty the path had grown. A small cloud puffed out with each step. He came to stop near the rock, the shadow of his head eclipsing just beyond the snoozing cat.

The cat, if he did take any notice to the looming shadow and man, didn't budge from his slumber.

After a few moments breath, right when the presence of man had begun to be familiar to the great forest, he opened his mouth and remarked upon the weather. When had it last rained, too thought the trees?

“It's been a while,” Purred the cat, rolling onto his back into another glorious stretch. There was a great rumble in the distant mountains, as if to accentuate the words of the cat.

There was a scuffle as the man balked, scrambling behind the nearest tree for cover. Had the cat just said something, as in used words, as in talked ?

“Too long for the trees to be happy,” Continued the cat; the trees bristled agreement. The man's heart raced. It had taken him this long to notice everything around him was not only alive, but truly living. A breeze rushed over the area, steady, haunting. Something in the air caught Brishen's eye, and he knew at this point he might be losing his mind; a man was falling from the sky. The figure was too distant to make out other than that yes, it was human.

On that note, Brishen fainted. Sireth the cat blinked thrice, stretched, and decided to keep watch over the human until it came to.

Aetheria awoke and stretched with a laziness well practiced. The sun washed over her like a comforting blanket of warmth, which caused her to stir with a sleepy yawn. Up in a tree, Aetheria had slept on the thickest branch and had not regretted her decision. While the birds chirped to greet the sun, she stretched her muscle and checked her weapons, along with potions, gadgets and anything else she had brought with her on her journey. She covered her mouth with a slender hand and yawned once more, then used her momentum to spin off the branch, using her hands to swing in motion. Birds fluttered from the disturbance by the young elf and twittered with nervous anticipation. Always nimble, the blonde elf landed with a steady footing and watched a little blue bird flutter near her.

She reassured the bird and allowed it to rest on her index finger. It puffed up its chest and ruffled its feathers in agitation, but forgave the exuberant elf. Aetheria giggled and watched him fly off to tend to his nest. She then realized she had rested near the birds family, which would make anyone agitated. The bird chirped back toward her in a friendlier tone, but she waved her goodbye's and headed off on her own.

Trees crested the edge of the path, which comforted the wood elf. All her life, she had grown up amongst the trees, wildlife and rarely experienced the political side of her mother. Aetheria watched the wildlife scurry across the worn path and munched on a handful of berries from a pouch. Her stomach grumbled for something more substantial, but hunger would have to wait. Perhaps a town was just up ahead and she could rest at an Inn, or grab something to eat at a tavern.

In the pathway, Aetheria squinted against the blinding light of the sun and thought she saw a cat. She loved cats! Aetheria shoved the remaining berry into her mouth and picked up pace to investigate the odd creature. It appeared to be by a sleeping being, so she approached with caution. She didn't want to startle the cat and lose her chance to converse with them.

Aetheria tucked a strand of blonde hair behind her pointed right ear and gazed at the cat. She ignored the growl of her stomach and eyed the still form of the man.

"You poor thing! Is this your owner? What happened?" She said in a soft tone and went to investigate the still being for any wounds. "Are you hungry?" Aetheria asked the cat, even though she understood how stubborn cats could be. While she hadn't spoken to a cat yet in all her life, perhaps it could be persuaded with a bit of food. She reached into her other pack and produced beef jerky and laid it on the ground.

The offering was small, but sometimes it was the gesture that gained a creatures trust.
