Introduction:

According to legend, Kaine was once a young man who resided far to the north where the cold and the dark made life short, harsh and miserable. When one day an ancient evil and corruption threatened to overwhelm his home, the young noble of Clan Leviat took it upon himself to champion the efforts of resistance. Wielding little more than a sword and his own willpower, Kaine sought the source of the corruption in the ancient Tower of Darkhive and attempted to destroy it.

Whether he succeeded is unknown, but he returned warped by the powers of the night that assailed him. Now possessing a strong aversion to sunlight and a thirst for blood, Kaine was forced elsewhere by his new condition and spent the better part of a century trying understand it. Eventually he came to accept his immortality and unholy nature, and realised that for each weakness forced on him by his curse it equally granted him an unnatural blessing of power.

The first of a new potent bloodline of the night, Kaine named the bearers of his blood the Revenants, and called himself Lord over them. After centuries, Kaine eventually returned north where he took a castle for his resting place and went into a deep slumber in the crypts beneath it. There he slept for an age, until one day an expedition led by the Vankoryth Détente's Daemala and The Harlequin woke him and brought him back to their castle within The Cursed Woods.

Since then, whatever schemes and events have involved Kaine remain a mystery and he is rarely seen by the other members of the vampyric group. Seeing himself above them, he never-the-less respects a kinship in them that he cannot see in mortal kind; especially with Daemala, who he holds dearest above all others, for in their endless cat-and-mouse game of warped love and hatred he has something to dampen the perpetuity of unlife.

Name: Kaine Leviat
Age: Likely thousands of years. He saw many societies rise from the shadows and had a considerable influence on some of the oldest organizations and families in the ancient world.
Race: Revenant; the eldest and first of all of them.

Power: One should not be so quick as to chase their curiosity.

So begins...

Kaine lay there, for a while. Just like he had done for hundreds upon hundreds of years. His body was stone... And so very cold. His mind? His conscience? Blank. What had he of those things in such an eternal sleep? A sleep that might as well have been permanent death.

But it wasn't. He still lingered in the embrace of undeath, and slowly he began to realize the warm, wet liquid he craved tickling his mouth with the sweet taste of the nectar of life.

So good... So... Irresistible. As more of it fell upon him, he began to realize more and more of how he was not just being reminded of an ancient pleasure, but of how he was waking up...

On the outside, the stone began to slowly recede and turn to pale flesh and even the clothing he wore to cover it. When it finally finished, the man lay there - stern, handsome and with long, black hair lying upon his shoulders.

And suddenly, he took a gasp for air. He was dreadfully weak after such a long hibernation... But his eyes were open, and he was alive...

Welcome...
He heard, his eyes shifting and head slowly turning to Daemala. He didn't reply, not did he take notice of Lazarus and the Harlequin man...

Instead, his gaze locked to Raven, the source of the blood that woke him from his slumber. He could smell it and it's infinite sweetness, and he would feed upon her.

His arm flew out, strong and stern with the hand at the end gripping Raven Drygion's top so tightly his nails dug into his hand through the material. If he had blood in his system, he would probably have bled from it...

But no, he didn't, and that was the problem he sought to rectify. He began to pull her closer with inhuman strength... Closer and closer until finally... Her neck was within reach.

Unless something planned to stop him, he would lung for her throat, bite into her flesh and begin to drink.

Kaine fed, and fed and fed. He fed until he was no longer thirsty, until the assimilated memories he gained through her blood were fresh in his mind and giving him all the information the average person needed to know about this futuristic world in which he had awoken...

English... So that was her language. He understood it now, yet it still sounded so strange compared to ancient Greek and Latin. No matter, if that is what the people had chosen to speak, then he would commune with him on their terms.

His eyes, glazed black, returned to their normal colour. He released her, pushed her away, then sat up on the side of the slab. "You will not die," he explained, his accent heavy. "You will turn... A reward for freeing me."

"So, they call us Vampires now?" He was still very weak, and his eyes heavy, but he found the strength to stand and face Daemala and the others. "And we are no longer a myth..."

Kaine reached down, his cold hand filled with new warmth; grabbing her by the arm so that her limp form would not hit the ground. And when he caught her, he pushed her onto the slab that held him for untold hundreds of years so that she might regain some of her strength.

He peered up to the ceiling high above them, his hand rubbing along his face and chin, then brushing his hair slightly so that he might test what effects ageing had on him. None, of course, for immortality had been his gift to the world.

Of course, Lazarus had spoken, but who was he to say such words?

"Silence," he demanded.

"Kaine, my childe," he answered her, his fingers reaching under her chin to lift it with a certain gentleness. "What is your name? For you are mine now, and you will serve me for all eternity."

There were many tasks for an elder vampire to perform, especially one as old as he who had just woken and yet to regain his strength. He would have her hunt for him, perform errands for him; serve him with her life, body and soul.

"Sleep now and regain your strength, for when you wake, you will be one of us."

Having left the old castle by the eastern seaboard, the released ancient followed his nose to signs of civilization, to a sea of blood bottled in flesh. With him, he carried Raven, who he held aloft in front of him not with arms, but with a power that had her form lying upon a flying carpet of mist.

It was late at night, no civilians were around, and many buildings seemed to be abandoned. After some searching, he found one that would serve his need, an old guard tower filled barrels, crates and coated lightly in straw, placed presumably to aid the fool who designed it in burning the entire place down again.

He carried her up to the second floor, where an old barracks was still home to several wooden beds. He let her down upon one, then sat down and began to wait. He had to teach her the ways of her kind, before doing anything else.

Kaine stood, his coat flowing with a texture like silk. "Kaine," he answered, as he pushed the chair back under the table he had taken it from. Then, he made his way up towards her and held down a hand for her to take. His flesh was cold and pale, and it would have a horrible familiarity to it; her flesh was now the same.

"I turned you, sired you, in thanks for what you did for me - freeing me from a prison in which every sleeping day felt like a lifetime, and over five hundred thousand of them has passed. I counted each one, and I remember each one."

"Your reward was the greatest that I could offer, my blood. And you will now find that you have none... And that you are extremely thirsty for it. Come, you must learn to hunt if you wish to survive."

Her body should have died. His bloodline was the eldest, and no mere mortal could simply turn, so she had to have been something more. He had expected her body to crumble into ash before she would wake, but against all the odds, she was still there.

Then again, not any blood could have woken him from his prison.

"Then you should first be aware of the allure of your addiction and how satisfying it is to divulge. We must feed for self preservation, but understand that we are also creatures of sin. To some of us, blood is a drug addiction, to others, a form of sexual rite, with the latter being far more dangerous, as I have discovered from personal experience. The urge to let go of all humanity and become a monster - caring for nothing but your own desires and needs, will be there always and for eternity."

He pulled her from her bed and stood her to peer out of the window and out onto the streets below. Every so often, a car passed them by and broke the night's silence. "We must go out to the street, and you must hunt. A beggar, an upstanding citizen, a male, a female, an adult or a child, it matters only in that you must discover your tastes if you wish to remain comfortable."

"No," he harshly replied. "You must hunt alone. You must hunt who you want and how you want and I will give you only three simple rules: do not get discovered, do not get killed, do not drink from the dead."

"I will be following you, from a distance... My movement silent and never wasted. Should you run into trouble, I will be there, even if you believe you have escaped my oversight."

"How old are you, girl?" Kaine asked. The memories he had seen of her when he drank her blood? Vague and full of misinterpretation. An unfinished series of film scenes randomly cast about in order. He knew less about the woman he sired than he would like...

"Do you have parents? Family?"

"Good. You are no longer human, and you should no longer be imprisoned by everything that comes with it - family, law, mutual love and trust. As a Vampire, you are a dark hunter, a creature of evil who is hated and sought by many; to be killed by those who fear us and to be used by those whose fantasies we often invade. You are now inherently unsocial, but your words and womanly charm and be weaved to seduce and tame whomever you wish for whatever ends you desire. Let go of empathy, and like the human psychopath, take what you want and do not regret it."

"You are never truly alone," he replied. "The moment you kill, a part of the victim becomes eternally bound to you. Part of you, to haunt what constitutes for your soul until a time comes where you falter and crumble to the ground."

"You will discover this feeling soon enough, a feeling that no matter where you go, or what you do, the weight of what you have done is forever on your back. To survive, you have no choice but to endure. Enduring is easier when you stop caring for such things as empathy..."

A dark, grey mist began to form before the grand doors, and with his arms held aloft by his sides like a figure of authority embracing his power, the ancient turned from a gaseous liquid to organic solid in the space of seconds. His coat was dark, with furs and decorations of mocking silver, and the front of it opened to reveal the nothing he wore underneath. He had always believed one could display their brilliance using their body and he certainly pushed that as far as modesty would allow.

"I have returned, Vampyre-kind; from myth and legend. I step now into reality, and I do not move so without my trinkets."

It began to rain.
It began to rain gold.
Watches, bracelets, necklaces and coins, all falling to the floor in a display as magnificent as it was dangerous to the heads of those who did not duck out of the way soon enough. They could keep what they found, of course, but Kaine did not plan to give away the treasures of his tomb without spilling a little blood first... And a golden trinket to the head would do quite nicely at that.

Of course one might ask themselves: where did it come from? Did he summon it in the air? Was the teleportation or fabrication of matter a power he controlled? Well, if they looked up, they would find the answer was no. Men were up there, clutching the highest walls and clinging to the ceiling with claws, or standing like weightless spiders above chandeliers with buckets in hand. How they got there was likely no secret to the elder of the present vampires, such as Daemala, but the hope was that the rest of the guests were suitably amazed.. Awestruck, even.

As the new guests dropped to the ground to mingle, Kaine approached Daemala herself and took her hand up to place upon it a delicate, yet dangerous kiss of lip and fang.

"My sweet mistress, we have many things to speak of through the night. Rewards must be given, business must be conducted and diplomacy performed. This ball, at the behest of my mercy, will survive until your politics begin to bore, or displease."

Daemala dove behind the Harlequin for cover as gold rained from the ceiling, extending out a hand to catch a string of bulging golden orbs. She looked up, smiling wide as a ton of elegantly dressed vampires clung to the ceiling! Oh this was such fun!

They dropped, the guests, ladies in gowns that poofed as they descended. The men landed stately, and the music stayed still for a moment longer. Then, it resumed, the newcomers mingling in, multiplying the body count.

As Kaine approached she curtsied deeply, bowing her head. When he took her hand, surely enough she felt the power emanating from him. Oh flattery! He spoke, she rose, looking him into the eyes and raising her chin. "Business, yes," Daemala revealed her sharp fangs. What he said was troubling, but only in the least. "Would you care for some champagne?" The waiter had made his way to them.

"Winne Rineswurth here, reporting live from the Ball of Chaos!

It would appear ancient royalty has arrived! Kaine, famed Vampire of old, graces Verinotte Hollow tonight with his presence. With him he has brought an undead entourage, who dropped from the ceiling in an impressive display of archaic power! What really stopped the show, as you can see ladies and gentlemen, is what happened prior to their drop.

Gold rained from the ceiling, a gift from Kaine to the guests. The barrage of splendor has stopped, but many lavish items still litter the floor of Verinotte Hall. What is to make of this appearance? Guests ducked for cover, and a Taguel was seen fleeing the scene.

This has been Winne Rineswurth, with TERRACAST!"

A young woman slowly entered the hall, her hair pulled up into an elegant bun, a few strands hanging to frame her face. She quirked a brow at the rain of gold, letting her eyes drift over the various guests, lingering on those drifting from the ceiling. The beauty and grace they possessed brought her attention to the simplicity of the blue dress she wore, matching the woading that decorated her skin. She tucked a strand of hair behind her ear and slowly scooped up a handful of gold, tucking it into the purse she'd brought with her. She brushed off her dress slightly before beginning her slow walk around the hall, absorbing her surroundings and examining the guests with curiosity. "What a strange little event..."

There came a deep rumbling from all around the hall, and the air seemed to tighten and constrict itself around one's throat. Light bent itself in unnatural, unsettling ways, and any and all electronics present flickered and died, plunging the scene into Darkness.

As it should be. Was this not supposed to be...The Ball of Chaos?

Zosimos too was strutting around. He bowed his head as he passed Valve and Arielle, the celebrities from Ruula. He was mingling with the newcomers when the room was plunged into darkness. He snickered, still fully able to see, knowing what had happened. He would feel that presence anywhere. Winne Rineswurth let out a sigh of displeasure, her cameraman sounding noticeable disgruntled as his tech was no longer operational.

Zosimos moved his way over to Jude, smelling nobility from afar. Nobility smelling nobility, he smiled.

"Greetings," Zosimos raised his chin in respect, "The Vankoryth Detente welcomes you," He slipped him a small note. It was the coordinates of Castle Vankoryth. "Care for something to drink?"

The young woman looked about quickly as the electronics went out. Her glossy eyes took a moment to adjust, but she had very little problem still seeing what was happening around her. A hand instinctually went to her throat, fingering the pearl locket there as she glanced about. She was unsettled by the sudden darkness, but only enough to force her closer towards the walls of the hall; keeping her back to something solid gave her the courage to continue enjoying the ball. She was uncertain about her new-found home, but events such as this certainly brought some excitement to her otherwise ritualistic life.

Oh, yes. The stage was being set quite fabulously this evening, Zosimos mused. The glittering eyeballs over head didn't bother him too much, in fact he quite enjoyed the chill it sent up his spine.

"Of course," Zosimos snapped his fingers, a vampyric waiter carefully picking his way through the crowd towards them. "Which lovely lady indeed," He mused as well, for there were many present.

The wallflower's eyes flashed a yellow-green at the girl who created a fireball, but her eyes didn't linger longer than a few moments. Almost immediately, her gaze was pulled toward the ceiling of the building, pushing back into the wall further in fear of the cracked pieces of ceiling. She stared curiously, her hand clenching harder around her locket out of fear. It was the only possession she would sacrifice everything for, and as the starry night morphed into a sea of twitching eyeballs, she became almost breathless with panic. Her body trembled slightly and her eyes grew wide as she slowly inched across the wall, her footsteps almost silent.

However, her attempt at escaping was cut off before her mind even registered it was happening. She glanced at the approaching drow with mixed fear and curiosity. She matched his bow with a quick curtsy, her hand never leaving her throat. "A pleasure, Lord Baenval. I am Lucrais MacLagain. However, you may be mistaken, m'lord. I'm in need of no assistance, perhaps just some...fresh air." Her eyes drifted up to the nonexistent ceiling and she shivered visibly.
