Katie Brighton

"It does not matter what you do, as long as what you do is what you know is good."

0 · 841 views · located in Wing City Spaceport

a character in “The Multiverse”, as played by Curtsive

Description

ImageTrue name is Bskevoliq Brighton, but Katie is his Terran English name.

Katie is dim, affable, and curious. His home planet, Teta IV, is a matriarchal theocracy with a strict hold on it's residents. The culture integrates all of the citizens into the main religion, which, surprisingly, is far more forgiving than the actual society. It takes a lot for a citizen of Teta IV to escape Teta IV, but through money and family ties, the mercenary has achieved just that.

Generally, he doesn't follow his culture's socially acceptable norms, such as deep-seated xenophobia. He is deeply religious, but prefers to carry out his religious affairs in private rather than public, not even going so far as to pertain to religious clothing laws.
Image
Vrischvu is Katie's religion, with the ruling goddess of Dezil. She preaches equality in all humankind and leading a virtuous life.

Equipment:

Katie's armor is made by his father's company; Brighton. They're big on quality and aesthetics. His armor by itself is lightweight - using steel, cloth, and other various metals. It does it's job as effectively as it can while remaining light, mostly protecting his chest and leg areas. The designs are custom and have a Celtic influence.

With him, he keeps a black bow. It seems standard - high quality, malleable, and expensive. A small white engraving is on the side of it - Brighton again. It leads one to believe all his equipment is manufactured custom.

He uses different arrows, most of them being capped or have barely detectable bristles.

So begins...

"Okay." Katie said, as his arm was taken. Disagreeing with her seemed not the route she'd wanted him to take, so he simply nodded past her, indicating the he would've liked to go on. "Don't worry yourself so much that you can't focus."

He gently pulled his arm from Jessica's grasp, and moved forward. If he'd had to sidestep past her, he would. His exhaustion was clear, but so was the urgency of the situation. They damaged his tact, and perhaps made him seem a little more apathetic than he'd liked if he were in a better situation.

"Gambit's is on... Main Street. I believe." Katie said, "I have a building a street close, in the shopping district. It is past that. Will lead you there."

He was ignorant to Jessica's stifled frustration at him, and kept on without acknowledgement of them. They exited the ship, to the fairly quiet landing area, that boasted cheers and parades only days ago. His gaze seemed to flick around, before he nodded in front of them. If they kept pace quickly, they'd cover the ground that led them to the exit of the Spaceport, and bring them back into the city.

"This way. We leave, and turn right. From then, we follow street until we hit the gardens and cross over. Is not too long a walk."

Then, he stopped.

"Do you wish to stay back? ... In case Shadow comes to the ship again."

Katie bit his tongue, but followed her. With a brisk jog, he caught up, and walked to the side of Jessica. "If I don't see that you or her are in danger, I will leave." He said, leaving a resounding 'can't guarantee it' on the plate. "It is dark out, and Terra is dangerous at night."

A few minutes later, he cupped his hand to his mouth, and called out Shadow's name as well. When there wasn't a response, his eyes seemed to set on Jessica, who's behavior was erratic and her veins and eyes glowing. Perhaps it wasn't a good sign, but it was nothing that he was going to ask about. Maybe later, but not then.

At the pace they were moving at, they'd get to Main Street rather quickly, which housed the infamous Gambit's Bar. Twenty minutes, but no doubt that Katie would be winded when they'd gotten there.

Katie wasn't so sure. Jessica wasn't too imposing herself, when she'd had her wings on, and Shadow was small. Although he had heard bad things about her, he hadn't seen them with his own eyes. To leave them to wander the streets alone at night felt like an injustice; he was armed, and they were not.

He slowed his walk as Jessica had, as if following an order. He didn't quite know Shadow as well as Jessica had, so when she requested that he shush, he quieted his breath and slowly nodded.

Katie would keep to Jessica, traveling close behind. He was light on his feet, though not nearly as light as she could be, with what he was wearing. He'd resisted reaching for the weapon on his back, lest it alarm the woman he was traveling with. No doubt that he was a little paranoid at the very least, however.

Katie didn't falter, and when Jessica bursted into a sprint, so did he. Sweat already lined his brow from the trip there, but his own exhaustion could easily be ignored when the scene got exciting.

He wanted to shout something to Shadow, or even Jessica, but he'd been directed not to. There wasn't much he could do past keep up with the woman. The archer slacked behind a little, lest Shadow try to sprint back to the other side of the street.

Katie rounded the corner after Jessica had, and paused at the sight of Shadow and the other women. He frowned, but kept on, and took his place next to Jessica. The hesitance in reaching for his weapon showed again, and his steps slowly took him toward the girl.

He looked to Jessica, a confused sneer plastered on his face. By then, it hadn't mattered if he'd spoken or not, right? Katie's gaze soon set back on Shadow, and the bow hung lazily at his side. "Come now, Shadow. You are good, yes? You do not need to harm these people. That is not something a good person would do."

His worried gaze flickered toward Phinx and Liz, and he raised his hands in a 'don't-shoot-me'-esque manner. "We will go home, back to Lalitia."

Katie flinched and took a step backwards as the pale girl shrieked, only to have Jessica take the blow for him. If he could, he would have protested. Instead, he took to the side of Jessica, and kept his advance toward Shadow. It would be evident that he was intent on placing himself between Liz and her offender, though.

"I thought," Katie said to Phinx, "It was pretty obvious that we are trying to leave." A thick foreign accent laced his words.

"Come, Shadow. We are going to go back to The Lalitia." He insisted.

Darien's presence was decidedly ignored by the archer, albeit it was abrupt.

Katie, having seen the situation as calm, turned from Shadow. He shot a questioning glance toward Jessica, as if to ask her if she could handle it, and then turned on his heel and faced Liz. "Are you alright? Do you need assistance getting somewhere?"

He cautiously offered a hand downward. The woman seemed volatile toward the three, but there surely wasn't anything that she could do that'd be worse than Shadow's doing. The choked sob from the girl forced his gaze back to her, but it was soon placed on Liz again.

"...The hospital, perhaps?"

Katie's shoulders didn't slump until Liz turned, and he couldn't see her anymore. Soon, he lumbered to a light fixture, and rested his arm on it and his head on his arm. For a moment, he closed his eyes and breathed. Then, he withdrew, and turned to face Jessica and Shadow again.

Under the street lights, the archer's eyes only seemed more exhausted. He'd put up with it, though. No doubt would he have to do the same on the trip to Misrana. "Come," He said, and found his place at Shadow and Jessica's side. He mouthed to Jessica a question, 'Are you alright?'

That said, he did keep a foot distance from the girls.

Katie shook his head. "It is alright. I just wish to get back to ship and rest," He said, and the words he imparted were an obvious truth. "You should do so as well, as should she." He nodded down to Shadow.

"I do..." The archer started, and then hesitated. "See what they meant. And why you were concerned. We can only be thankful that nothing happened."

After a moment, Katie took the side of Shadow, leaving her in between the two of them. It would be a strange walk back.

Katie found himself at the top of the platform when Jessica had fallen, and his heart skipped a beat before he'd fully realized that she'd come down safely. This realization only occurred when he'd thrusted himself to the edge and gazed downward. It would have been a hefty fall.

But he found himself thankful, for obvious reasons, and the archer only let the sharp breath in he'd taken out when he found everyone lively at the bottom. In a moment, he withdrew from the crevice, and got to lowering himself back down to the stadium floor.

It hadn't taken long. Over broken pieces of scaffolding and platform he ventured, to the women underneath. Quickly, he found himself to the aide of Jessica.

"You are alright?" He asked, and then turned his attention to Sich. Sich, and her magic gloves. It captivated him for a moment, and he'd almost gone so far as to ask if he'd obtain a pair, but it occurred to him that it wasn't the right time to ask.

Quickly as it'd come, he seemed to detach his attention from Jessica to sweep the room.

"No one else is hurt?"

Katie, having begun to calm down, attempted to reexamine the scene in a new light, where he wasn't shouting broken Terran English or hauling himself of scaffolding ladders. He brought his hand to his face, and was shaken out of his spell when Helmi had come shouting.

It didn't fit the woman. She was a little too eloquent to be screeching like she had, but he supposed it was only understandable that she do so. Shrugging and shaking his head, he pulled his hand away from his face and rubbed it on the arm opposite. He couldn't quite remember what the broken railing looked like.

"...Might have. Not sure. Should I check?" He asked, and continued quickly, "And you did not notice anything out of ordinary when you were up there, Jessica?"

"Jessica is correct. It is unbecoming. We will get to bottom of the accident." Katie agreed. He said so with a nod and a strong tone, as if he were one hundred percent sure of his statement himself. It was not so simple, though, and it was nothing more than a calming tactic.

He, too, was surprised by Helmi's outbursts, and perhaps a little intimidated. That wouldn't show, however. He cast a look Sich's way that contorted itself when it hadn't been directed at Helmi. It was everything from worry, to confusion, to even a bit of slight annoyance.

The archer let a quiet sigh escape his lips, and finally nodded.

"As she wishes."

Katie forced a smile toward Sich, as if he were attempting to alleviate the situation. The corner of his mouth only twitched, though, and it was obvious enough that he certainly wouldn't be enjoying himself. How could he? It had turned from a celebration to a situation.

"It is fine, Sich," He'd assured, when his smile failed. "It is better to get it over with, I suppose?"

The officers soon approached, and he met them with a half-nod. When asked his name, Katie glanced oddly between both Jessica, Kito, and Giovanni. "Bskevoliq Brighton. Terran name is Katie. A... pleasure?"

The archer's eyes trailed upwards, as if he were trying to remember. "Midnight, I was asleep. In the early day hours, I was praying. I am not sure for how long."

He raised a brow, as if he were questioning if that was it.

Katie glanced to Jessica when she'd cut in, as if he were even surprised she'd pitched for him. Relief quickly grew over his face, and his eyes flittered between Kito and Jessica, as if they were looking for some sort of reaction.

And when everything checked out, he smiled with tight lips, and nodded at Giovanni. In turn, he took a small step backward. It itched at him to thank Jessica, but it surely wasn't a thing he could do without rousing some sort of suspicion.

He glanced down to Shadow and offered the same smile, before looking up to the officers again.

"May we depart, then?"

Pat, pat, pat,

came the soft sound of feline paws against the floor of the garage. A brown head bowed as it'd walked, and eyes shimmered forward, seemingly looking for something. It was Nirikita, Katie's vehicle, who was only complying to her owner's wishes. She prowled around, though not for a target, but rather for a person.

The soft sound emanated around the corners and through the holes of rubble and scrap, and the beast would soon find herself rounding a corner of which to see Jessica. Jessica, who was working away at her own pace. If the pat of Nirkita's claws hadn't alarmed the girl to her presence, the soft growl would do just as much.

Katie hadn't accompanied the beast. Not at that time.

Nirikita's eyes flickered, almost as if she were surprised at Jessica's reaction as well. The beast took a few steps back, and her head tilted to catch a glimpse behind her. The reasoning would be clear, when Katie's steps would grow to the point where the woman in the clearing could hear them.

"Nirikita," He said, as he'd entered, and only then would his eyes lay on Jessica. "Jessica!"

He patted the vehicle, which withdrew and sauntered away from the heaps of rubble and scrap. Katie smiled, and hesitated to come forward. "I hope I am not interrupting? I wish to check how you are since the accident in stadium beforehand."

Katie accepted the invitation graciously, and came over to where Jessica sat. He braced himself with a hand, and soon found himself cross-legged across from the woman. The fervent attitude she'd taken toward her work almost surprised him, and would even bemuse if it weren't associated with the spill she'd taken earlier.

"Then I am glad you did not get hurt. It scared me as well."

He hesitated for a moment, before speaking. "I am fine, however. I am glad to see you are adapting so well. I do wonder... if it were of another's doing?"

The archer looked down, to the wing she'd been working on. "And if you need assistance, I would surely help, but keep in mind that technology is not my strong suit."

Katie knit his brow and frowned at Jessica, as if he were displeased by what he'd heard. She was blunt, that was certain, but... The way her hands shook, 'you understand?' had been dismissed with nothing more than a nod.

"The feeling will pass."

And as she spoke, he ran his hands over the wings. While Misranan technology amazed him, the item surely wasn't his focus. His eyes still sat on Jessica's face, and he looked for any sort of disdain.

"She will. I imagine that, the way she was screaming, it will be first on her mind." His lips hinted at a smile. "It was quite unbecoming, and I don't blame her, but... I had not expected a voice like that out of such a woman."

His fingers felt a bump. The archer looked down, and kept his hand on the uneven space.

"Right here."

Katie kept his eyes on their hands as he spoke. His gaze didn't stray up; not out of fascination, but rather, thought. His other hand reached up to meet his face, and idly sweep it as he spoke.

"I am a mercenary," He started. "Creating events I would much rather forget, is my line of business."

Then, he looked up to Jessica again. "But you are correct. Everyone has their share. I suppose I am not too well at looking past the outer covers. They are never quite well at telling the story inside."

He bore a frown.

"Your outer cover is quite nice, but I do see what you mean." Katie said, his frown alleviating into a tight-lipped smile when he'd heard the words the woman imparted upon him. "I imagine my cover is far nicer than what is under it, however that may be."

The archer shook his head.

"Thank you, as well. Your presence has made the trip more enjoyable than I think it would be otherwise." He paused. "Even though we have not left."

Katie couldn't help but grin when Jessica had laughed. The situation grew a little less tense, then. He gently placed his other hand on the back of hers, before letting it fall to his lap again.

"Well, we are human. Cannot help but be hypercritical, sometimes, I suppose."

While the good-meaning comments from the girl certainly meant something to him, they hadn't exactly changed his opinion of himself.

"You have been, perhaps the kindest face, since I left my family on Teta IV. Certainly the most honest. I do appreciate this."

Katie roamed the halls just as well as any other person, and he, himself, was dressed in his own security garb and armor. He was making his way toward the garage, when his eyes fell on the same figure that introduced the dancers on the night that the accident occurred. At first, the archer frowned, and then he smiled at the more-than-jovial man as they'd approached eachother.

Unlike those who parted to make way for the hefty mayor, he slowed, and took the side of Magna Impus as he'd gone so far as to introduce himself.

"Hello... Mayor, was it?" He asked, a noticeable accent lacing his words. "I was at show the other night, before the accident occurred. My name is Katie Brighton; I'm hired as security for your ship."

He paused, and then stuck out a hand for Magna Impus to shake as they walked.

"I was quite enjoying it before it had to be cancelled. I do wonder if you are going to host the same show again. Let us not let a bad incident spoil the entire thing, yeah?"

Katie couldn't help but smirk at the man's thunderous voice and jovial appearence. "Oh?" He asked, before chuckling and continuing, "She did, then? Well, what does Sich say about me? Only good things, I suppose?"

They shook hands, and he brought his other to pat the back of Magna's hand as they had. Before soon, the handshake dropped.

"I can only imagine. Aretu Liiga is... Diva?" He asked. "I have heard much about her."

Katie feigned a frown. "I did not quite know that Misran obstacle courses would be so dangerous. It certainly provides a special motivation to learn how to use ATW." His frown ceased, and he chuckled, himself. Sure, it was incredibly frightening. At the time.

"Ah, I see. I am unfamiliar with Misran places ... Zanzaria? Is a place on Misrana, yes?"
