Katja Sterling woke up in the dark. Disoriented, she moved to sit up, the concrete cold beneath her palm. Her head swam at the movement and she lifted her hand to it with a groan. She tried to focus on her surroundings, but no matter how much she blinked, her vision would not clear. Great… she’d lost not just one but both contacts. Fantastic. She leaned against a brick wall for a moment before attempting to stand. Her body ached like she had the flu. Where the hell was she?

A large dark shape loomed in front of her and she reached out. A dumpster. Alright. Brick wall, dumpster, concrete… she was in an alley. It felt like there were layers of cotton over her ears. All sounds were muffled, and as she stood, leaning against the wall, she closed her eyes as it felt like those layers got pulled away one by one. Music, conversation, the clinking of glasses, the sound of bottles being thrown into a trash can… Bar?

Moving slowly, she located a door and pulled on it. It opened. The light was horrifically bright and she raised a hand to shield her eyes as she stood in the side entrance to Gambits, unsure whether to enter or not.

Katja Sterling stood in the doorway for a few minutes, letting her eyes adjust to the light, trying to associate the blurry shapes with things that she already knew. Those were booths, those were tables, those were chairs… the moving ones were people… She was getting somewhere.

A waitress noticed Katja standing and looking lost and asked if she could get her anything. “Bathroom?” she asked, her throat dry, her voice cracking. The waitress pointed and Katja looked off in the direction of the point. Okay… that way. Somewhere. Moving unsteadily in the indicated direction, she located a door and pushed her way in. One quick glimpse in the mirror told Katja what she already suspected, even though she couldn’t see clearly. Turning on a faucet, she washed her face, drying it with a paper towel. Trying to straighten herself out as best as she could, Katja squinted into the mirror. Hell. She looked like Hell.

Searching her pockets, she found a few crumpled bills, some lip gloss, a pen. She had no idea where she was. Hopefully, sitting in the bar and eavesdropping would help her there. Moving back into the bar, she squinted, locating an empty table and making her way over toward it.

Katja Sterling heard Finch, and assumed he was speaking to her, so she stepped inside and allowed the door to close behind her. She stood in the doorway for a few minutes, letting her eyes adjust to the light, trying to associate the blurry shapes with things that she already knew. Katja Sterling looked over in the direction the voice had come from, squinting at Finch, trying to see him clearly. “A bit,” she admitted. Despite the fact that she had only spoken a total of four syllables since she had entered, her words were heavily accented. She looked down at her hands, taking note that she couldn’t even see them clearly. Her head ached. What the hell…? She closed her eyes and swallowed, trying to force herself to remember what had happened. A crease developed between her eyebrows as she thought, but she couldn’t remember a thing. The alley. The wet concrete, discarded cigarette butts, smell of urine…

Opening her eyes and looking back toward Finch, she shrugged. “Where is this place?”

Katja Sterling squinted at Finch, trying to see him clearly and watched him sit. She would have allowed him to sit even if he had waited for an invitation. It was necessary to get information. Information was… important. Her brows furrowed at the news of where she was. Gambits bar. Specific. Wing City. More general. But, where was Wing City? Her hand rose to her neck, to fidget with the necklace that she always wore, only to find that it was missing. Moving her hand over her neck as if it were hiding, she frowned when it was not found. Okay. Wing City. Can’t see. Lost my necklace. Was I mugged? She reached into her pockets again and pulled out the crumpled bills. Eighty bucks. Okay. Looking down at her hands again, she noticed that all three of her rings were in place. If she was mugged, wouldn’t they have taken the money and the rings? So… mugging probably wasn’t right.

“Who are you?” she asked, looking up at Finch, as if his name might answer some of her questions.

Katja Sterling rubbed her eyes, as if that would clear her vision, but she was disappointed to discover that it did not. Maxwell Greene… Green… green… The color flashed through her mind. Grass… close. Very close.. inches from her face. Grass. Green grass. She blinked, frowning, trying to figure this out. She could remember the veins in one particular blade of grass. Green. It was green. Bright beautiful green… and when a shadow crossed over it, it was dark. Shadow… sense of dread…

Massaging her temple, she tilted her head to look at Marlene. Narrowing her eyes, she strained to see clearly, but could only make out a humanoid figure, blonde. Female. No detail. “I don’t think so,” she murmured.

Katja Sterling rubbed her eyes again, trying desperately to clear her vision… How had she lost both of her contacts? And her necklace? And ended up here? “I am in Gambits bar. In a place called Wing City.” She repeated the information she was given. “His name is Maxwell Greene. My name….” She hesitated, frowning. “Gambits Bar… Wing City… Maxwell Greene… green grass… shadow…” She trailed off, blinking profusely. “I can’t see.”

Hearing the commotion beside her, she rubbed at her eyes again. Terminated? Terminated. Super Planetary Assault Carrier.... Council...? Carrier... Carrier... A man's voice: 'You... now a Carrier..."

Katja Sterling flinched as Marlene shined the light in her eyes. Her eyes closed on their own, the intense light actually causing physical pain. “No!” she cried, covering her eyes. The light had been so bright, so unexpected, so painful, Katja had forgotten for a moment where she was. She leaned back in the seat, rubbing at her eyes. “What…? That was… why?” she mumbled to herself.

The more she rubbed her eyes, the more they bothered her. Instead of everything being blurry, they now hurt, and it felt like there was something in them which made her want to rub them harder. “Where is Wing City?”

Katja Sterling continued rubbing her eyes, almost in a panic. She worked to control herself, but finding oneself in an unfamiliar place without the ability to see and remember how one arrived was not exactly a situation that she could stay calm through. She opened her eyes and blinked, the world horribly blurry. Damn! If she hadn’t lost her contacts… What was one to do when they lost their contacts and they didn’t know where they were?

Turning to ask Marlene, she blinked, finding the seat vacant. Oh. Alright… Alone. That’s okay. Um..

When the bartender asked if he could bring anything for her, she squinted at him. “Water. Please?” As she continued to mess with her eyes, she felt a sudden relief in one eye, as if whatever had been in it had dislodged. Cautiously, she opened her eye fully, a contact popping out into her hand. With it gone, she could see. Clearly. What the hell?

Not one to ask questions, Katja quickly removed her other contact and blinked, looking around the room, seeing it clearly for the first time.

Katja Sterling blinked, staring down at the contacts in her hand. It didn’t make sense. Before, she couldn’t see clearly without them. Suddenly, she couldn’t see clearly with them. She was puzzled, inspecting the contact lenses, as if they would contain a clue. Contact lenses. She remembered putting them in… the mirror, the bath… no, she didn’t remember the bath. Just putting in her contacts. Normal routine. Normal. Everything was normal.

Looking down at herself, she frowned as she discovered how filthy she was. Trying to brush away some of the unidentified filth, she haltingly lifted a stain to her nose and sniffed. Blood? Gasoline? Not her normal scent.

Looking around herself, seeing the bar and its patrons clearly, she studied them, hoping that she would get some answers, as if their very presence would help things make sense. She felt Unlimited’s eyes on her and she studied him with more interest, trying to see if she knew him. She didn’t think so, but… well, she didn’t know much of anything right now. Frowning, she looked down at her rings as she took a sip of water. “I am in Gambits bar in a place called Wing City,” she repeated to herself, her voice quiet, a heavily accented murmur. “My name is…” She stopped, biting her lip. “I am in Gambits bar in a place called Wing City…” she tried again. “My name is…” Again, she stopped.

Katja Sterling looked up at Saven, tilting her head. “Saven,” she repeated. “Your name is Saven Laric. You are a doctor. We are in Gambits bar, in a place called Wing City.” She was trying desperately to piece things together, and she was hoping the repetition would help… or at least keep her from forgetting anything else. “My name is…” She frowned, looking down at the contact lenses in her hand. Looking back up at Saven, a frustrated and helpless expression, she bit her lip, gesturing to the chair, silently inviting him to sit. “Do you know me?”

Hearing Unlimited, Katja looked over at him. “I want my name to be who I am,” she responded.

Katja Sterling frowned slightly at his words, a crease forming between her eyebrows. “You do not know me,” she repeated quietly, almost sadly. Reaching for the water, she took a sip. “You do not know me, but you brought me water. That is a kind gesture. Thank you.” She took another sip and set the glass down. Getting an idea, she reached into the pockets of her coat. Withdrawing a handful of assorted things, Katja deposited them on the table and looked at them. Safety pins, a button, a pen, lip gloss. Nothing that helped her. Absently reaching for the lip gloss, she applied it to her lips as she thought. “I am not a doctor,” she said with some certainty. “My name is…” She stared at the button, chewing the inside of her lip.

Realizing the contents of that pocket had told her nothing, she continued searching her person, finally coming up with a passport from the back pocket of her jeans. Opening it, she smiled. “My name is Katja. Katja Sterling. I am from Tver in Tverskaya, Russia.” She grinned up at Saven, feeling like she’d solved a great mystery.

Katja Sterling smiled as brightly as a child for a moment at the fact that she’d remembered her name, even if she hadn’t. It sounded right on her lips, though. “I am Katja, and I am happy to meet you, Dr Saven Laric.” She took another sip of water, and her smile faded. “I have been here for…” she frowned. “I couldn’t see.” She looked down at the contact lenses she still held in her hand. “It was dark out there,” she said, gesturing to the door to the side alley. “Dark and it smelled, and I was…” She shrugged. “I am here. In Gambits Bar in a place called Wing City.” She sipped her water again. “Where is Wing City?”

Something struck her then. “Is it in America?” Her voice raised, a bit of hopeful excitement in her expression. She looked at her passport, at the picture of herself. “Tver is not beautiful.” She took on an odd expression, wondering where that had come from.

Katja Sterling picked the button up from the table, studying it. His words resonated with her. ‘Count yourself lucky.’ They echoed through her mind, triggering something. Something dark. She closed her eyes, trying to remember. Dark. The grass from earlier. The shadow. A shadow. Dark. The crease between her eyebrows deepened as she thought. A voice. Deep. Unfamiliar. ‘Count yourself lucky.’ Squeezing her eyes shut tightly, as if the darkness would help her memory, she chewed the bottom of her lip. ‘Count yourself lucky… You are now a Carrier.’

She opened her eyes, reaching for the water with a trembling hand. “My name is Katja Sterling. I am in Gambits bar in a place called Wing City that isn’t exactly in America, but it isn’t in Russia.” It was a whisper, barely audible and meant only for herself. Taking a deep breath she looked up at Saven and gave him an unconvincing smile. “Tell me about Dr. Saven Laric.”

She looked up at Unlimited, a questioning expression. She looked at the offered arm, but did not shake it. Instead, she lifted her water and took another sip, nearly draining the glass. “Do you know me?” she asked quietly.

Katja Sterling smiled at Saven. “Alright, I will call you Saven, as you requested.” She nodded, as if a deal had been made, one quick firm dip of the head. She studied his face then, probably uncomfortably, staring, scrutinizing, eyes narrowed as she studied him. “You are a smart man, Saven. You think too much.” She nodded again as if this was final.

Turning her face to study Unlimited, she tilted her head as she put him through the same scrutiny. “And you, StrangeMan, you fight too much. Pick a flower.” She seemed utterly serious about this. “Pick a flower. And you…” she started, turning to look at Saven again. “You should eat a potato.” She smiled and then turned to Unlimited again. “I don’t think anyone should know me,” she responded. “I think that is the point of me being here. In Gambits bar in a place called Wing City.”

Katja Sterling blinked at the sudden disappearance of the man, the flash of light excruciating to her eyes. She closed them, lifting a hand to cover them, a small cry of discomfort. As such, she missed Saven’s reaction, although if she had seen it, it just would have added to her questions. “A drink,” she nodded, agreeing. “I believe I must have a drink too.” She kept her eyes closed as she laughed at his words. “This is definitely not Russia.” She opened her eyes and looked up at Damionell. “Maybe Hollywood? Like the movies?” She grinned slightly and shook her head before she reached into her pocket and withdrew a few crumpled bills. Counting them, she nodded. “I have eighty dollars. It is a fortune in Tver. I am very lucky.”

Think, Katja. Tver. You got your passport. Why? It wasn’t cheap, but… but the money came from somewhere else, didn’t it? Where? She caught the attention of a passing waitress and ordered a vodka on the rocks with an olive before gesturing that Saven should also order if he wanted a drink.

Her attention distracted by Ori, she blinked. "You know me? I am Katja Sterling from Tver in Russia. If you know me, you must tell: Why am I in this place?"

Katja Sterling immediately pulled away from Ori’s touch, scooting her chair back in a hasty attempt to distance herself. She hadn’t planned to do so. It was just an instinctive reaction, her eyes narrowing suspiciously. ‘Escape.’ The word brought new images to her mind, ones that made her squeeze her eyes shut. Shadows. Dark shapes. Unclear. She whispered her mantra to herself again, trying to ground herself, to make sense of something, anything. “Katja… Tver… Gambits… Wing City… not America…” It was whispered, barely audible, barely escaping her lips, delivered with closed eyes like a prayer.

Opening her eyes, she looked suspiciously at Ori. “There is nothing about me. You do not know me like I don’t.”

Katja Sterling watched as her companion left. “Goodbye Doctor Saven. I hope to see you again.” She sipped her drink as she looked at Ori. “Why do you wish to read me? I am not a book.” She bit her lip. What if she knew something but didn’t know she knew it and Ori had been sent to get the information? “I have not a good head to read.”
