Kendra Anona

A positive rainbow of optimism defined by her yellow headband.

Description

Image
Not mine and never will be. Drawn by M.Smith.

Friends: Fox, Ranpu, Sir Lucian, Mr Castle, Max, Norrington, Cyrus and Steph.

Appearance:

The first thing people noticed was the bright yellow headband that pushed her long auburn fringe back away from her face, presumably to allow her to see clearly when she worked. A silence had descended over the corridor as the staff watched her curiously, realising with a startling clarity that her slightly larger than normal grey eyes were observing them as well, an inquisitive spark setting them alight as if she was staring into candlelight. Her face was smudged with ink and graphite, suggesting that she had indeed been working on a project, as the roll of paper in her hand gave testament to. No one had been expected her to be quite so..., well, short, but small she was, not even reaching five foot three by estimated guesses, but her physique was quite athletic, suggesting that prior to her appointment she had liked to keep fit.

Only now did people pay attention to her clothing, which was remarkably simple – a navy t-shirt, emerald green combats partnered with rainbow trainers, her brightly coloured ensemble already marking her in the minds of everyone. Later, only her yellow headband would remain constant, her unique style gone in favour of practical clothes, though still in vibrant hues but no one would forget their first sight of her, as even though the sunny clothes vanished, her sunny personality remained.

If she is not in her workshop clothes (which largely consist of her yellow headband, dark coloured shirts and various loose trousers) - which is a rare thing; then she favours colourful knee length skirts partnered with leggings or tights with small low-heeled tan boots. Her upper body clothing can be anything from a long sleeved top and waistcoat, to a frilly blouse. Her hair is mostly worn low down, normally in a plait or braid in the workshop and a loose ponytail everywhere else.

As most of her time is spent indoors, it is no real surprise that Kendra’s complexion is incredibly fair, which is only highlighted by her yellow headband and constantly smudge ridden face and hands.

About a year into her first job, Kendra found herself bored one evening and on her own, pierced her own ears in her bathroom, emerging the next day with a set of hammered silver circles as earrings, which she has never been known to touch, except during the first six weeks of healing and have never been removed.

Personality:

It is incredibly accurate to describe Kendra as an optimist; always able to find the upside to any situation, though she is not naive enough to believe that everyone is good. This attitude originated from her mother’s belief that if you always found a reason to smile – even in times of strife – you would always be able to do your best. Her inspirational creativity forms a part of her personality that is core to her sunny nature, her mind working in a freakish manner, her bizarre logic allowing her to connect dots faster than most people. Of course, she gets stressed like any person with a considerable job to fulfil, but Kendra battles through with the support of a fantastic team of friends and supporters. This being said, there has not been a recorded incident of Kendra ever getting angry, although she has been rather famously known for the degree of silent treatment she can dole out if she is annoyed. Also, nothing tends to get designed if she’s in a mood; well it does, but it takes a few days longer. Her skills are considerable, but not impossible to match.

Likes:

If you asked the bright Kendra what her favourite things were, you would potentially be sat in exactly the same chair for about four hours, as there is not much that Kendra does not like. If pressed Kendra would first tell you that she loves her job most of all, especially seeing the completed product, whether it was a building, weapon or truck. Secondly, she would pronounce her love for drawing with more traditional equipment, discarding more advanced technologies for graphite and a board, moving onto the more accessible technologies once she is past the first stages of design. Lastly, but by no means least, the young architect would tell you that her third favourite thing is being able to be herself and be respected despite her personality because of her talents.

Dislikes:

Weapons. Kendra dislikes every weapon she makes, knowing they are a necessary evil and required to live the way they want to but Kendra has no love of combat, preferring to create ways of defending the city than trying to deal with the threat head-on. Lying is second on her list of peeves, because lying doesn’t solve anything, often only exacerbating a problem beyond manageable levels, creating stress that didn’t need to exist. There is also no fondness in Kendra’s heart for those who feel to protect their home that they need to be stoic and unfeeling, believing that the strongest weapon that you can have is your conviction to protect your home and people, not quite understanding that military personnel are quite skilled at masking emotions.

Equipment:

Despite being the co-designer of many of the wondrous technologies that benefit the modern day world, Kendra herself does not own any particularly advanced equipment, excluding her workshop utensils and her personal communicator, which she has affectionately named Archie. This communicator has been with her since she began her career within the world of enigneering design, adapted over time to suit her needs. Its most recent tweaks involve the ability to be able to contact any public communicator – whether it is a telephone or instant messenger – allowing her to receive requests easily. It also allows her to keep track of important events , as she spends a great deal of her time within the workshop floor, leaving most of the field work to others who are more comfortable travelling outside the complex. It is DNA activated; enabling only Kendra to use it and so she stores a great number of her unfinished and finished plans on it, rather than on her workshop computer. It is the size of a modern iPhone, the slim technology allowing it to be portable.

The newest addition to Archie is a small stun gun, giving Kendra a method of defence, as she is not very physically inclined.

Kendra’s only weaponry is Archie, though the compound she lives within is quite secure.

History:

Everyone suspects that her gift is a miracle and most people do not know how she was discovered by the Government. Kendra Lawrence and her family know how the Government find their architects, though even after twenty-seven years of life, why she has been blessed with the gift is a mystery.

Up until her fifth year in the world, Kendra Lawrence had a relatively normal upbringing, except that she didn’t really do the things that normal children did, which baffled her parents and teachers. Instead of playing with toys and engaging socially with her peers, the young prodigy could speak with the grace and intelligence of a fourteen year old and spent her time designing toys with crayons and paper, then constructing them perfectly with either building blocks or other materials. It was only when Kendra started school that her unusual behaviour was fully recognised by those around her and that attracted the attention of the officials who approached Kendra’s parents, informing them that she had been ‘blessed’ with a rare talent; a flair for architectural and engineering designs. However, the downside would be that although her creativity and intellect would develop steadily over time, it be would virtually impossible for Kendra to learn normal things, like how to ride a bike and how to be socially ‘normal’. This was the price paid for her genius and it was not a voluntary cost.

Kendra Anona Rachel blinked, looking around the bar area from the far left-hand corner, a teleporter in hand. She beamed.

Rachel looked around the room, staring at all the people... This was not the country home and where were Mummy Kendra and Mummy Hope?

Yes, there was a four year old loose in the bar.

Rachel couldn't see Winnie as all the tables were towering over the small child's line of sight. Now she vaguely recognised the place; this was where Mummy Kendra had found her that first time.

Orange juice. She was thirsty, heading towards the bar.

Rachel reached up to the bar, her height not even half the end stool, walking over to the side entrance to behind the bar. "Excuse me, can I have a strawberry daiquiri please?" she asked with a cry of delight.

Mummy Hope drank those all the time. They smelt nice.

Rachel took the drink from Milo with an innocent smile, taking a sip and pulling a face of mixed disgust and joy. Strawberries tasted good; alcohol did not.

Then Blade approached the little girl, grinning at him. "Uncle Blade! What are you doing here?"

Rachel looked quite unhappy, taking a step back with the glass in hand, sipping again. "No; I wanna drink what Mummy Hope drinks. You're a mean uncle!"

Rachel's eyes lit up at the sight of her mother, but she still kept her distance from Blade, looking quite upset now. Alcohol wasn't bad; Mummy Hope said so! "Uncle Blade is being mean to me mummy!"

Then at the mention of the teleporter, Rachel lost her attention on the drink, tapping the button and disappearing, the glass falling from her hands and shattering against the floor.

Rachel grinned as she reappeared near the bar's door, waving at Blade and Hope enthusiastically. "Mummy Hope, I'm over here. This is fun!"

Rachel looked across at her mummy with hesitation, as she had this toy now; why agree to get another one later? Besides, this was fun! "Poof!" she squealed, pressing the button again.

A green and pink teleporter did sound fun though... [/i

It still looked the same, Kendra thought idly as she crossed the threshold into Gambit's, dressed simply in her emerald green combats and yellow t-shirt, hair held up in a messy low ponytail.

Once Hope had confessed to her that both of their children had frequented the bar recently - with teleporters no less! - Kendra had set it upon herself to come to the place at least once a week. It wasn't like it was hard to dodge Blade with all the nonsense he placed upon himself.

Winnie was a wonderful distraction for him.

First, she looked startled and then, the young woman relaxed, nodding as she finally reached the bar counter. “Just... an orange juice please,” she replied, smiling slowly in relief.

There was no sign of Rachel or Henry. Thank goodness.

There was a moment of contemplation as Kendra pierced the opening of the juice box with the straw, feeling oddly childish as she sipped. It was only a juice box; they didn't cost that much and it wasn't like they didn't have money. “How about this; I'll help you if I canand pay for the juice box,” she returned, getting comfortable on a bar stool.

“You can have a few minutes, as I'm in no rush.”

Immediately, a soft blush graced Kendra's cheeks. Women she was very quickly learning to be an expert on, a small grin turning her lips upwards. “Of course! Ask your questions and I shall answer as best I can!” she returned, tilting her head to the side. “No need to be embarrassed.”

No doubt, Hope would kill her later for accepting a juice box from a known Assassin but it wasn't like anyone had given her a description of him.

Kendra Anona blinked in bewilderment at that, staring at the stranger most acutely. He... couldn't mean... Her Hope, could he? No, of course not, there must be dozens of Hopes around here. At least, that was what she told herself, a flicker of worry in her eyes. “Well... The best option is to find something that she likes; a hobby and strike up a conversation that way?” she offered tentatively.

Yes, she supposed they were but now that niggling feeling was growing worse. Oh dear... “Yes... that would be a good start. Get to know her through the... No, wait look. Hope Anona?” she questioned, her curiosity breaking her good manners, leaning forward for an answer.

Kendra Anona was not amused. At all. “She's my wife,” her voice came out pleasantly, so not to cause offence. In truth, she didn't mind that another found her dear heart attractive; really, it was hard not to find Hope endearing, but still...

Now he was just being rude, Kendra thought with a frown of upset, moving to stand. Her good mood was falling swiftly, the last of juice box sipped up in a few moments. “Well... If that's all you needed help with...”

You horrid, horrid man! She yelled in her mind, normally not so outspoken.

“No. There is just Hope and I,” she said shortly, her eyes narrowed in contempt, though she blinked rather widely at his question. “You... You knew, didn't you? Who I am.” The questions were asked rhetorically, her right hand coming forward, a finger pointed at the man's face.

“Despicable, horrid MAN!”

Then she turned to walked away, stunned at her own behaviour and her bad luck.

Unfortunately for Conrad, all he got from Kendra was a fierce glare, this situation recalling soundly why she was so very glad she had fallen for another woman, even if it was eccentric Hope. The stranger kept talking as she walked away, ignoring his words about presents for Hope and Steph, trying not to spin on him with fury.

Then he mentioned Rachel and something snapped within her, whirling around and storming back towards him, her face a whirl of fury. “Stay... away from my daughter! Hope and Steph can handle themselves but my children... You stay [b]away
from them!”

Grenade... What... Somewhere in the back of her mind, Kendra made a mental note to have a very long talk with Hope about what children were NOT supposed to play with.

Kendra Anona looked positively galled as Conrad launched himself towards The Assassin, seemingly in retaliation to the masked man's words against her and wasn't sure what to think, merely honing in on the Assassin as he spoke again, nodding firmly. “She's four! She shouldn't even be involved in this situation, let alone in a bar with strangers who give her grenades to play with!”

Then she swept aside a hand to gesture to the mockery of a fight going on between the two men. “This is between me and him,” she gestured towards herself and then the Assassin. “And whilst I appreciate your concern, I'm quiet capable of having an argument all by myself, thank you.”

His protests were met by Kendra turning her back in reply, starting to walk away rapidly from the two, a twinge of sympathy in her eyes for Conrad, who had stepped into a fight without knowing what he was getting himself into.

She had barely made it eight steps when The Assassin stood up abruptly from a roll to walk alongside the architect, who proceeded to shoot him a glare and then pick up her pace a little. “You've been messing me around since I walked in that damned door; how can I trust you with my daughter?”

Sighing, the architect and mother shook her head, stopping in her steps, actually looking sorry. “And I'm sure she'll be very sad to not see you any more. If you cannot treat her parents with respect, then I can't trust you to treat her with respect. That's just how it is.”

Sassin was a strange name, she thought idly.

Well, that didn't surprise her at all. “The last time I cut someone some slack, they took my shape and tried to kill my wife,” she snapped back at him, but the hardness had gone from her voice, replaced by annoyance. “I am not like Hope. I am easy-going, but I have responsibilities and people to watch over; little ones who can't take care of themselves.”
