Description

Description

Name: Kenji Komamura
Alias: Dead Eye; Crow
Age: Thirty-nine
Sex: Male
Race: Human
Height: 6'0"
Weight: 170 lbs.
Appearance Kenji is a grizzled man, and handsome despite the scars decorating his right eye. His choppy black hair is barely shoulder length, and appears unkempt most of the time. His left eye is green, a hereditary trait inherited from his mother, while his right has since been replaced by a glowing red cybernetic optic implant. He is often found wearing strictly black clothing, and favors wearing a trench coat for concealment purposes. A well-built man, Kenji has an impressive figure. He stands rather tall for a man of Asian descent, and has broad shoulders. Stoic in appearance, his physicality alone sometimes keeps people from approaching him.

Image

Personality

Kenji is silent and very much dedicated to his boss, Madame Shikijou. Because of this, he is highly obedient to her orders, and will carry out commands without question. Although he possesses his own very impressive intelligence, he finds contentment as the second-in-command. Quite antisocial in his personal life, he doesn't have any friends outside of the Kuro Ude, and plans to keep it that way. He is honor-bound to Madame Shikijou and the Ude, and would gladly die to defend either. He is a calculated killer, and can execute an opponent without a moment's hesitation. Among the Kuro Ude, he is more open with his mannerisms, but only just, preferring the silence of contemplation, listening, and observation as opposed to prattling on with his own ramblings. He has moments of gentleness, and has a soft spot for birds, especially canaries.

Abilities & Equipment

Omisace Mana Sword - A Mana-powred katana that can cleave through most any material. An expert with blades, Kenji is an artist when utilizing this weapon.

Karate Mastery - Mastery over the Minato-style karate has made Kenji a more efficient fighter. He currently holds a third-degree black belt in the martial art.

Optic Implant - A cybernetic implant that has since replaced his severed right eye. A glowing red optic implant connected to his visual and neural systems, the eye provides a HUD as well as various scanning software. This piece of hardware has enhanced Kenji's martial prowess tenfold.

MagiTech Arm Augmentation - Kenji's left arm has been replaced by an augmentation capable of harnessing the powers of the Manasphere. He is a proficient elctrokinetic sorcerer, utilizing his abilities to further his killing prowess.

History

Kenji got his start in Rorian Grand as a common street urchin. By the time he was six years old, he was having to resort to stealing to survive. One day, he was caught stealing from a grocery store by an employee, who was prepared to turn the young boy in. However, the commotion caught the attention of Boss Minato, the boss of the Kuro Ude crime family. He approached the two, acting as the boy's grandfather and pretending to scold the boy for his bout of mischief. The store worker knew better than to challenge Boss Minato's claim, and released the boy into his custody.

Kenji's career in organized crime began here, as he was taken in by Boss Minato and his family. It was here that Kenji met Yumi Minato, who would eventually become Madame Shikijou, and would begin his life of service to her order.

Kenji started from the lowest level, having to complete the clan's rigorous training regimen. Upon completion, he was sent out to perform the tasks givien to him, ranging from assassination to espionage. Kenji stood out among his fellows, which highly impressed Boss Minato. One night, Kenji learned from a sobbing Yumi that Boss Minato had been assassinated, and that she would succeed her late father. She specifically chose Kenji to act as her second-in-command, trusting his abilities above those of anyone else.

Since then, he has been serving as Madame Shikijou's lieutenant, carrying out his orders just as he had always done.

So begins...

Kneeling down in the rain-soaked streets of Sector East, the man looking up at his captors with eyes full of pleading sorrow. "I'll get the money, Mr. Komamura! I swear! Please, I-I-I have a wife and kids! Please! Just give me some time! Please! Please!" Kenji looked down at the man from beneath his umbrella. The pitiful man was of Chinese descent, and ran a noodle kiosk on the corner down the road from the Sakura Gardens tea house.

"Nothing I can do, Xao. Boss wants your debts cleared or your head. You'll be giving her the latter I'm afraid." This prompted a series of harsh sobs and groveling, his face planted firmly in the soaking street. Eventually, Xao sat back up, looking Kenji in the eyes once again.

"I'll get the money soon! I swear! I'll have it before she even knows it was missing! Please! I'll get it! I swear on my children, I'll-" This prompted Kenji to harden his gaze, grabbing the man by the front of his white smock.
"Your family has nothing to do with this, Xao. Just accept what you have coming, bow your head and try to die with some semblance of dignity." With that, Kenji released the whimpering fool, who slumped into a position that spelled his despair. Looking up once more, his eyes pleaded, but his mouth refused to move. Kenji held his hand out, as if beckoning one of the men behind him to hand him a firearm. Xao's eyes lit up a bit, feeling at the very least fortunate that he would die a quick death.

However, the Kuro Ude backed away from their lieutenant, crossing their arms and staring down at the silent Chinaman. He looked about each of them, confusion etched across his face. Suddenly, in one quick and fluid motion, Kenji's arm had extended, his mana-powered katana in his outstretched hand. Slowly, Kenji sheathed the weapon, and watched as Xao fell over, the top portion his head tumbling off.

"Pick him up and dispose of him. No need for the cops to get involved." With that, his men nodded, splitting apart to clear a path for Kenji as he departed the scene before moving to scoop Xao off the street.

Around the corner of the Eastern Street, a lithe female was curled up on a pile of flat rocks. Despite how peaceful, albeit uncomfortable she looked; rage seemed to radiate from her form. A light red aura appeared around the area, almost as if it were protecting the unknown woman. Anytime anything neared the area, the shield fluctuated, setting the intruder on fire. This happened even though it was currently raining and even the drops seemed to completely miss her resting frame. Reddish locks covered part of her lightly tanned face and her closed eyes. A black star tattoo was partly visible beneath her long hair as was the red wife-beater she happened to be wearing. Beneath her was a black hooded jacket, cushioning her toned frame ever so slightly. The jacket seemed to bleed into the black hip hugger jeans in addition to her black combat boots. After spending so much time gazing at the fair maiden, one might begin to wonder if she was alive or dead. Giving the state of the current location it was quite easy to believe her to be deceased. However, at the arrival of other forms, more importantly at the sound of someone begging, the slender digits upon her right hand began to twitch.

Someone’s here
 Someone I can destroy
Someone that might know why I am here
 Someone that might know something
Guess I have to wake up. UGH.

Stretching out the entirety of her athletic 5’8 body, Mataiya slowly opened up her fiery red eyes and glanced around. Leaping off her bedrock bed, the agile twenty-one-year-old shifted her attention towards a building that overlooked the street, wondering if there was a better view from up there. She couldn’t tell who exactly the others were, and that annoyed her. Snatching the hooded jacket off the rocks, she slid it on, not bothering to zip it up. Between where her tank ended and her pants started was a tattoo of black roses that were intermixed with wire in the shape of a heart. The majority of the tattoo covered her stomach, which was otherwise bare of all other forms of decoration.

Callahan strode towards the fire escape ladder, purpose evident in her gaze. Luck was on her side because it was still in good shape. Climbing up slowly, she made her way to the top of the building. Humming beneath her breath, ‘Taiya was happy when she reached the top and glanced down at the street below. She couldn’t exactly hear what was going on, but someone was kneeling on the ground and it took her a few minutes to realize it was raining all over her. Had it been pouring earlier? She didn’t really know, but figured it had been, but that didn’t really matter. Shifting her attention back towards the male, Mataiya leaned forward a little more and took note of something in one of the men’s hand seconds before the begging fellow had his head lopped off. Well, part of it, at least. Blinking and absolutely confused, she decided to follow the sword wielding fellow and do some investigation. Heading back towards the fire escape, she shimmied down it and walked onto the street, following behind the only male that was leaving the scene.

What in the heck did I stumble in on

Kenji was headed home, to his apartment in the northern part of Eastern Street. His umbrella hung over him like a shadow, rain dancing off the top as it was diverted by the protective material. Kenji stopped at the curb, taking time to light up a cigarette, looking above at the towering archology that surrounded him. It still amazed him that he lived in this sky city, the upper atmosphere surrounding them like an invisible cocoon.

He pressed on, continuing his walk, the splashing beneath his feet ringing in his ears. He passed a few night lurkers in the street; random pedestrians who were either coming home late, going into work early, or just roaming around. He spotted a mugger or two as well, but that was of no consequence.

The night air was refreshing, especially with the rain. He enjoyed the rain, and how clean and crisp it smelled on the concrete beneath him. He took a last drag of his cigarette before exhaling the remaining smoke and tossing the butt aside. Suddenly, he spun around, sword drawn as he scoured the path behind him with his eyes. His cybernetic left eye engaged in thermal scanning, and he detected a very high heat source behind him. Of course, the person's footsteps pacing behind him had given his follower away.

"You've got to the count of three before I start cutting," he began. "One... two..."

Shoving her hands into the pockets of her hooded jacket, Mataiya hummed under her breath. She wasn’t really attempting to be secretive as she followed the male home, though she probably should have at least attempted to be ninja-like. The longer the two walked, the more bored she became and it wasn’t long before the redhead even wondered what she was doing. Removing her hands from the pockets, she pulled the hood up over her head to give her a sense of mystery and ceased humming. Glancing around, she was far too busy looking around to realize her target had stopped moving. She was definitely rusty for this type of business. Quickly coming to a stop, she stepped behind a building, staring around it to watch him smoking his cigarette. When he began walking, she did as well, this time making sure to pay attention more than before.

The longer she walked, the wetter she became, but that didn’t really bother the lithe female. Naw, as soon as she was able to get out of the rain, she would just use her special ability to warm and dry herself back off. For now, she was going to just have to deal with being soaked. Scrunching up her nose when he tossed the butt to the side, she was glad she wasn’t close enough to actually smell the cigarette stench. When he suddenly stopped again, Mataiya slid behind a building, holding her breath to keep from being spotted. When he started counting, she debated whether or not to show herself and figured she really had nothing to lose. There was something about the guy that intrigued her and she figured he might be able to help her. So, after taking a deep breath, she stepped out beneath a nearby light, the hood still pulled far enough to hide her appearance.

“Now, now, no need for such drastic measures.”

Much to Kenji's surprise, he was approached by a young woman. He kept his sword low in his right hand, eyeballing the girl carefully. She didn't appear all-too-impressive, but her heat signatures were rather astounding. He figured her to be a pyrokinetic of some sort, but she didn't appear to be armed with any MagiTech. Of course, this was all of very little consequence to Kenji, who was only focused on one thing at the moment.

"Why are you following me?" he asked sharply. His career as a member of the Kuro Ude had earned him quite a good amount of enemies, and this girl could be another one just like them. It wasn't at all impossible that she was the fiance or daughter or sister of someone he had killed. Her posture didn't appear threatening, but sometimes they didn't; it was a clever tactic to try and catch Kenji off guard.

Unfortunately for his various would-be assassins, he was never not on his guard. His eyes burned into the figure before him, awaiting her explanation. He'd much rather not have to cut her to pieces if he could avoid it. Only if he could avoid it.

Why was she following him? Why do people always start out with a question? Why not a hello, hey, how ya’ doing? It was a little sad that someone apart of society was always quick to jump the gun and point a sword at someone that just walking down the same street as him. It was a little off-putting, but she figured it was a good question. He seemed a little jumpy and she wondered if perhaps he thought maybe she was an associate of the man that had been chopped. Of course that just wasn’t the case, but it appeared he wasn’t a mind reader. Finally deciding it wasn’t wise to keep a man holding a sword waiting, Mataiya parted her ruby red lips and smirked briefly.

“I’m not following you. I’m simply walking down the same street as you and hiding behind buildings for the fun of it. Maybe you shouldn’t be so paranoid, sir. Though, that is a nice sword you have there.” Technically part of what she said was the truth
 to a certain degree.

Stepping to the side a little so that she was more in the shadows, Mataiya pulled the hood forward more to make sure not an inch of her face could be seen, except maybe the bright color on her lips. She really wanted to cross her arms, but didn’t want to make it hard to get to her weapons. Though, technically she didn’t need to use anything, but it was habit and that was something that was very hard to break. As the two stood there, she tried to debate on whether or not to ask about the poor soul, but figured that might get her skewered, so she decided to skip inquiring about him.

“May I go now? Or do you plan on cutting some of my head off like that begging sap back there?” Damn, she just couldn’t stop herself sometimes.

His eyes shot wide open at the mention of Xao and his demise. "I think you're mistaken. I believe you didn't see anything, and for the sake of your safety I think it would be best that you agree."

He didn't know who this woman was or what she was doing here. She could have been a cop for all he knew, scouting him out. If he had to kill her, so be it. It was always best to be safe. But that all fell under necessity, and so far he didn't have a need to kill her. A want, possibly, but nothing was absolutely necessary yet.

"To answer your question: no, you may not go now. Not until you tell me who you are and what it is exactly that you are doing!" His eyes narrowed, his optic implant scanning her thoroughly. She had her face hidden, so he couldn't perform a retinal scan or otherwise, but he found no other indication pointing to her identity.

His nerves were being tried, which was never a good thing.

Mataiya arched a brow at his comment. Was he serious? She didn’t see anything? Right
She was completely certain that some poor guy had been begging for his life for something that didn’t really concern her and the individual in front of her had been the one to end his life despite the presence of guns. No, she knew exactly what she saw.

Nope, not mistaken
 What a crack head

Maybe he had taken some drugs earlier and was tripping out. What if he thought he was just doing a painting and really no clue that he had killed a man? Musing on that for a while, she decided that was stupid and that he really did kill the poor bastard, but was trying to cover it up. Not only that, he was passive aggressively threatening her, which was never a good thing to do to such a volatile woman. Her bottom lip made its way between the two rows of her perfectly white teeth, though that motion just like her brow arching probably couldn’t be seen thanks to the shadow of her hood. She did note his look however and thought about pressing it, but opted to do nothing at the moment.

“You seem awfully paranoid for not having done anything villainous such as killing a man in the middle of the Eastern Street. I’m someone who doesn’t like answering arbitrary questions without some form of compensation. The only thing I’m divulging so far is that I’m looking for a group that is thought to be only a myth. The Kuro Ude to be exact.” She remained eerily calm, her voice just loud enough for him to hear what she had to say.

Her demeanor looked as if she were ready to go on the offensive, and Kenji thought he was going to be put in a position to deal with her posthaste. However, her mention of the clan perked his ears quite a bit. 'What the hell could she possibly want with the Kuro Ude?' he thought. His gaze narrowed, staring her down.

"You a cop?" he asked plainly. He could never be too sure. After all, it would make sense: the trailing, the questioning, the persistence. The only thing she was missing was the obviously forced inconspicuousness. Otherwise, she had all the makings of an officer of the law. Kenji held his grip on his mana-powered blade, but the answer was already quite apparent.

He smirked. "No, you're no cop. You and about twenty of your buddies would have come down on me by now if you were, if you did see what you say you saw." With that, he sheathed his blade, taking another cigarette to hi lips and lighting it up, taking a heavy first drag from the cancerous paper stick. He exhaled, the smoke billowing into the rainy air and dying in the night.

"So then, what's your interest in the Kuro Ude?"

A cop? Did she really look like a stupid cop? Did cops on this world dress in this manner? Mataiya arched her brow once again, trying to figure this guy out. Nothing the guy was saying was making a bit of sense, but she was getting used to that by now. He answered his own question before she had a chance to say a word, his response only causing her to shrug her shoulders. She made no other movement, not even when he sheathed his weapon because she was never really nervous in the first place. This wasn’t her first rodeo and it probably wouldn’t be her last. He seemed to be quite fond of his cigarettes and that was the only thing she was completely sure of at that moment.

“Of course I’m not a cop. Good lord, what kind of cop would
 actually, an undercover cop would
” Shaking her head, she released a very deep sigh and thought about how to explain what her interest in the Kuro Ude was and why she should even tell him.

“I’m not sure I should tell you that. How do I know you even know who they are? I’m looking to hook up with them. Let’s just say
I have abilities that would fit in fantastically with them.”

Kenji had to suppress a laugh. This girl had no idea who he was; standing before her was the strongest gateway she had to meeting the Kuro Ude. Short of meeting the Madame herself, anyway. With another drag on his cigarette, Kenji blew the smoke into the rain. He turned to face the girl again.

"And what... 'abilities' would you happen to possess?" he asked. Given her heat signatures, he could only only assume she was some sort of metahuman or something similar. Maybe even a humanoid alien of some sort. The specifics of her biology didn't matter, however. At question was her authenticity, and --if she did happen to find herself inducted into the Kuro Ude-- her loyalty. Kenji stood back a bit, getting a scope of her.

"You don't look like much to me," he said with a smirk.

The rain was beginning to aggravate her more than she wanted to let on. If he knew nothing about the Kuro Ude, then she was wasting her time and was only gaining the potential of getting pneumonia. However, if he did know them, which she was sure he did after seeing what he did in the street, then getting sick would totally be worth it. Tilting her head towards his question, she still wasn’t sure what all to reveal to him. Sighing, she decided to trust the yutz and give him just a little.

“Well, I’m not just some normal human. I have a love for fire and well
I can pretty much manipulate anything that has to do with fire.” Yeah, she loved fire, a lot.

She remained in the shadows, her appearance still almost completely hidden. The hood was still up for a couple of reasons; to keep her head dry and to hide her appearance and if he wanted it down, they were going to have to go inside. Shifting from one foot to the other, she crossed her arms against her chest and waited for him to either tell her he knew the Kuro Ude’s location or to tell her he had no idea where they were at and that he was only messing with her. If it was the latter, she was going to torch him, rain or not.

“So, you know where I can locate them?”

He scoffed. "That's privileged information I'm afraid. Can't go dolling it out to any street rat who wants an in," he said plainly, "I don't even know what you look like, much less what your name is." He dropped his now expended cigarette, crushing it beneath his shoe, twisting his foot to grind the cherry on the soaking sidewalk. Sizing the girl up, Kenji crossed his arms.

"You want in with the Kuro Ude, you'll need to prove yourself. And right now, you look like just another petitioner." He wasn't smiling anymore. His voice was smooth, full of attitude and of his intent. This girl was rather insistent in finding her way to the clan, but Kenji wasn't one to just take any old Miss Jane he met on a rainy sidewalk and introduce her to the Madame. No, she'd definitely need to prove her worth. At the moment, however she wasn't doing so much of that.

"Prove to me you got what it takes to be in, and I'll consider it," he said. "Now if there's nothing else, I'd like to get home and go to sleep, if that does alright by you." Whether she was okay with it or not really was of no consequence. He was tired, and wanted to get out of the goddamned rain. Umbrella or no, standing out in the middle of this wasn't his idea of a good time.

He turned to walk away...

Street rat? Well, she supposed with the rain, she might not look the best, but a rat? Hardly. Not moving an inch, she didn’t even make any facial movements to indicate she cared what he said, which she really didn’t. She had been called worse in the past and would probably be called worse in the future. Keeping her arms crossed, she shrugged again and wondered just how she was supposed to prove herself to this man. Logic quickly dictated that he definitely knew where they were at and was probably some guy in a high position for them. Sighing, she realized she was wasting her time because he didn’t seem like he was going to do much of anything let alone let her prove her way.

“And how am I supposed to prove myself to you if you’re going to sleep?” Her voice was still just as calm and quiet as it had been, though there might have been a slight irritation underlying the tone.

The heat in her body intensified slightly and she was glad when the heat took off the chill of the rain. She really needed to invest in an umbrella if this was going to happen more than once. Water generally made it more difficult to mess with fire, but if he wanted her to prove herself to him, then by god, she was going to do it before he left her and she never found him again. Taking in a deep breath, she held her hand out in front of her, her skin beginning to glow bright red. It took a great deal of concentration, more so than any other time, but it was definitely doable. After a while, the luminosity of her skin seemed to intensify three-fold until the light was floating above her flesh in the form of a fire. The flames flickered back and forth thanks to the rain, but they were very much real. Tossing the fire over to a trashcan she watched it become a blazing object in the matter of seconds.

“And that’s just me doing it while it’s raining. Imagine what I can do when it’s dry.”

Kenji watched as the girl paraded her abilities. She was struggling to generate a flame, but she accomplished her task, igniting a nearby trashcan. Kenji yawned, a display of boredom to be sure. "Pyrokinetics. I've seen it before. I could go to a back alley chop shop and get the same..." he trailed off. He turned to face the girl once again. As uncharacteristic as it was of him, Kenji admired this girl's tenacity and persistence.

"I'll tell you what," he began, "Show up at the Sakura Garden teahouse tomorrow, no later than 12:00 P.M., and I'll see what can be done. You know of the Kuro Ude, and you're obviously intent on learning of our 'little' family. We'll see if you have what it takes." with that, he turned to leave once more. However, he stopped in his tracks, turning his head back to the girl.

"By the way: if you try anything... fancy, we'll have your head on a platter. Is that understood?" he asked with finality.

When he yawned in boredom, Mataiya growled under her breath. Clenching her fist, she sucked the fire back up into her body, extinguishing the trashcan flames almost immediately. She was beyond irritated with his mannerisms, especially when he chalked her abilities as being something that could be found in an alley somewhere for next to nothing. Well, he never said next to nothing, but she was completely sure that’s what he meant. Crossing her arms against her chest once again, she wasn’t quite sure why he still was inviting her to meet him at the Sakura Garden teahouse, but kept her mouth shut.

“Right.”

Turning around, she disappeared into the shadows, shoving her hands into her pockets. She had a hotel to sleep in, which was a good thing since she was now soaking wet. As she walked, she thought about what he had said and wondered what he meant by trying anything fancy. Did he really think she would chance getting her head cut off? Rolling her eyes, she turned the corner, and after headed to the hotel and took the backstairs up to her room. She used her room key and once the room was secure, stripped out of her clothing and climbed into the shower. Sinking down into the bottom of the tub, she turned on the hot water and let it run down her lithe frame, warming it up slowly. Once warm, she did all the necessary things to make her body nice and clean and stepped back out of the shower.

“What a waste of a day
” Wrapping a towel around her, she dried her hair and moved to her queen size bed. Dropping down, she managed to set an alarm for the morning before passing out.

Mataiya swore the moment her alarm went off, her slender hand reaching out from beneath the covers to slam the snooze button with more force than what was probably necessary. Grumbling, she rolled over, tugging the comforter over her head to block out what little light that had begun to shine through her window. She had set the alarm two hours before she was supposed to be at the Sakura Garden Teahouse, that way she had plenty of time to get ready and stake the place out before going inside. When the thing went off again, she reached over and shut it off before climbing out of the comfortable bed. Moving like a snail, she headed into the bathroom to jump into the shower for the second time. It was about that time that she realized she was still wearing the towels from yesterday. Snorting, Mataiya dropped them to the floor before stepping inside of the shower. Once again, she let the hot water hit her body and took a few minutes to enjoy it before going through her normal routine. Once nice and clean, she dried off and wrapped one towel around her body and used the second one for her hair.

“I hope this goes better than last night. If not, I guess it’s off to another world
” Sighing, she focused on getting herself ready, making sure to check the time every once in a while.

Once her face was all make-up upped and she had applied lotion to the rest of her body in addition to the proper amount of deodorant, she pulled the towel off her hair, drying it without the use of a hair dryer. Fixing it up, which consisted of brushing it and letting it air dry, Mataiya nodded in acceptance and moved back into the bedroom of the hotel. Stopping at the closet, she pulled on a matching set of red lingerie before slithering into a pair of black hip-huggers and a red silk tank. Strapping on the sheathe that held her only weapon, she secured it before sliding in her sword. Grabbing her black hooded jacket that was nice and dry, she slipped it on and buttoned up the wooden toggle buttons with a yawn. Moving out of the room, she pulled the door shut behind her and headed to the elevator. It wasn’t long to reach the first floor and she scooted over to the little cafĂ©, grabbing three donuts, a bagel already smothered in strawberry cream cheese and a glass of juice. Scarfing down the food and drinking the juice in a matter of seconds, she headed out the front door of the hotel with a sigh.

“Now to the Sakura Gardens
” The lithe female began walking down the street, making her way to her destination.

By her silver fossil watch, it was 10:45am, which meant she had about an hour before she needed to be there. Hailing a cab, she told her where to go and sat back in the seat, tapping her fingers against her thigh. When they neared the location, she told him to circle around a couple of times and then drop her off a block away. He did as instructed and she took in everything that she could see before climbing out of the vehicle. Handing him the proper amount of cash in addition to a tip, she made her way down the sidewalk. Pushing open the door to the teahouse, Mataiya took in a deep breath and made her way inside.

The newcomer would find a glorious room about them: bright colors and tapestries filled the room. The carpet beneath was a crimson color, soft beneath the feet. Oaken tables were placed very orderly around the room, and the hanging paper lamps illuminated the area with bright mana lights. The smell of incense was prominent, but not at all unpleasant. People talked, dishes clattered and mouths slurped delicious tea.

Sitting at a table at the back of the restaurant was Kenji. Beside him was a strikingly beautiful Japanese woman, her slender fingers holding an ornate pipe between her lips, tobacco smoke exuding from the bowl. Kenji's eyes fixed on Mataiya as she entered the teahouse, and he leaned over to Madame Shikijou, speaking to her in a low voice as he pointed the girl out; "That's her," he said.

He sat back, crossing his arms with a blank look on his face. The Madame, however, smiled as she looking in the girl's direction, ordering one of the servers to lead her to where the two were sitting. A slender gentleman wearing a blue bellhop uniform came to escort Mataiya. "Miss, the Madame would like you to accompany her in the back," he said, leading the girl through the teahouse.

The Madame sized Mataiya up, looking her up and down, the smile never fading from her lips. "Kenji tells me you had a chat with him last night. He tells me that you were asking about us..." she trailed off, taking in Mataiya's presence. "He tells me you seem like a good candidate." With that, she motioned her hand to invite Mataiya to sit down.

"Make yourself comfortable dear. Order whatever you like; it's on the house."

After entering the Teahouse, Mataiya found herself gazing around in awe. This was the very first of this kind of place she had ever entered and it was definitely more than she had imagined it would be. The different scents wafted into her nose and she closed her eyes, letting the smells marinate within. Opening her eyes again, she wasn’t quite sure if she was supposed to tell them who she was there for or if she should just stand around until she was noticed. Deciding to just wait, she slid a few fingers through her crimson locks and continued to look around the immediate vicinity. As she looked towards the back, she spotted Kenji and tried to causally glance at the female sitting beside her without staring.

“Hmm
 that must be Madame Shikijou
 She’s very pretty
” Shifting a little when she noticed a male nearing her location, Mataiya smiled at him and nodded when he indicated he was to lead her to the Madame.

“Thank you, sir.” Following behind the man in the blue uniform, she wished she knew what she was walking into. Hopefully it wasn’t a trap, but even if it was, she could probably get out of it without much damage done to herself.

She wasn’t quite sure what was more unnerving
the fact that the woman she was meeting was still smiling all this time or the blank look on Kenji’s face. Either way, she knew this had to be done if she wanted to join up with them. Hopefully it wouldn’t turn out to be a complete disaster. Listening to the Madame, she just nodded and smiled and sat when invited to do so. Crossing one long leg over the other, she leaned back against the chair and folded both hands in her lap. She thought about what to order for a few minutes before finally clearing her throat to speak.

“I would like a cup of Strawberry Tingle hot tea, please. Yes, ma’am, I was asking about you
I’m interested in joining, but am not sure what I need to do in order to do just that.” Brushing her hair behind her shoulders, she smiled again.

The Madame kept her smile, ordering the drink the girl had requested. The drink came, and the trio were able to get down to the business at hand.

"Your initiation would require you to pass our trials; a rather grueling path for only the truly dedicated. Normally we would make you join our subordinate family and work your way up from there, but Kenji's words mean a lot to me, and his words say you might have what it takes. Be warned, though: failure to complete our trials will not only earn you shame among our ranks, but death by our blades as well. If you still wish to continue, we can arrange for you to take the trials."

She held her smile the whole time. 'Kenji had better be right about this girl. I haven't the time for failures,' she thought, casting a sideways glance at her lieutenant. He shot a her a sly smile, as if he knew what she were thinking. Her focus returned to Mataiya, her eyes once again sizing the girl up.

"Just tell me when you'd like to begin."
