----

Koken'in; guardian of the Root Lands.

Koken'nin is a consecrated young warrior from the fabled Root Lands; a mystical forest cut away from the rest of Terra by a perception altering field. He is of Deistic influence and his prowess, whilst at first alarming, can quickly turn ambrosial. He lives not to destroy, but to protect his ancestral lands where so few are left. He wields the Nedake Ken.

Apple; faithful companion.

Apple is of the Root Walker tribe; deer-like mammals who roam and feed on vegetation. Apple and Koken'nin share a brotherly bond reinforced through a childhood spent together. Apple's antlers are enough to out-best Steel and his butt can easily break down a wall. However, his skill remains in his ability to project his soul into physical form, often inflaming himself in burning blue fire for a variety of effects. He has also learned to speak, allowing for easy communication with Humans.

Nedake Ken; legendary blade.

The Nedake Ken is a Chokuto-like blade encompassed by an ebony scabbard and guardless hilt, where a strand of red silk is its only decoration. In another man's hands, the blade's raw sharpness can cut through steel and its raw density is higher than diamond. However, as a sword that specifically chose Koken'nin, Nedake Ken's strength directly mimics that of its wielder in his hands; to break it, you must be able to break Koken'nin and so on. It also cuts only to Koken'nin's inner will, meaning his subconscious feelings towards a particular object or person dictates its ability to harm.

The Root Lands; a mysterious paradise.

The Root Lands is a mystical forest hidden away by a perception altering field. Surrounding it on all sides, with a total area roughly twenty times that of the forest itself, is a large circle of land split between desert and tropical climates. It is inhabited by human warrior tribes, who fight a war between themselves with the hope of eventually invading the center. The Root Lands themselves have never been fully explored, not even by those who know the land best; where ones feet seem to disappear into flowing silver silk that splashes like water. Interaction is rare, one can often go years without seeing another face and barely a hundred sapient beings are left, most living a life of solitude and peace among the gardens and forest floors. Most of these are of Deistic influence, either God-spawn, or Gods themselves. The most common creatures are called "Gigi" and are found almost everywhere; coming in all manner of shapes, sizes and colours but rarely, if ever, larger than a dog.

So begins...

The crinkle of parchment echoed through the tunnel, immediately followed by a flicker of orange light. Eventually the glow settled, illuminating some of a female form. She shifted, and the light was blocked by a rectangular shape.

"Hmmm..." The rectangle shrunk a bit, light escaping to the walls of the tunnel.

The padding of a large creature echoed through the tunnel, from the darkest end... Pad, pad, pad... The sound was that of heavy paws hitting stone and with each second it got louder. Soon, the steps were joined by a voice...
"Apple, I don't remember seeing this in the temple plans..." it came from around a slow corner.
There was no reply.
"Keep an eye out, there might be something down here- hey, is that a light?"

She snapped the scroll shut upon hearing voices, having had not noticed the sound of the movement. Who was that?

Maybe this was the right place.

Reaching her hand up to her hair, the female elf plucked the illuminated leaf from where it rested above her ear. She sheathed the scroll, holding up the leaf to see whatever was up ahead better.

"Hello?" Her voice was soft like falling acorns.

The sounds of movement stopped, to be replaced by heavy breathing... There was someone around that corner...

"No, it can't be a Gigi," he replied to someone who wasn't talking back. "Gigi's can't talk... Maybe it's one of 'them'?"
Again, there were no words spoken but the voice found the need to reply.
"Ningen? Are you sure? What's a Ningen doing here?"

The whispers ceased for a moment, then the head of a large, white, furry creature with antlers and a black button nose peered its head around to view the source of the light.

With a squeak, the female elf plastered herself against the wall of the tunnel. Great Oak of Life! What is that? Holding the leaf to her chest for a moment, she stared.

Seemed...docile enough...

Slowly, she extended the glowing leaf towards the great furry beast...thing. Simultaneously, a small chipmunk like creature scurried down her arm to settle behind the leaf.

"Can..You speak?"

The creature, easily the size of a horse (though some of that visible weight seemed to be thick, snow-coloured fur) stepped out into the tunnel; alone. Despite looking somewhat like a Deer, this creature seemed a little bulkier, with paws and claws instead of hooves.

~Why have you come to the Root Lands?~ It spoke... It used no physical words, no movement of the lips. Instead, its wisdom seemed to go directly into the elf's mind. She needn't worry though, the creature known as Apple wasn't a mind reader.

Blinking a few times, she absorbed the thoughts. Oh, wow, this truly was an interesting creature. Later, the elf would log this encounter in a note book, complete with sketches and scales. If she was lucky she would get a sample of it's fur, willingly given of course.

"Root lands? I'm studying," with her free hand she pat at the sheathed scroll, "Following a map, you see." She cocked her head to the side, and gently pushed from the wall.

"What are you?"

~It is clear that we have gone too far, then. I'm sorry, but you should turn and go back the way you came. This tunnel leads only to a dead end.~

With that said, it slowly turned around and began to pad off around the corner and into the darkness once more. The creature barely had a tail, but something akin to a stump was there (though it showed no signs of scarring or being the remains of a severed limb).

A dead end...but...That isn't what her scroll said.

With a furrow of her brow, the curious side of the elf got the best of her.

"We? Wait-" Plucking the small creature from her wrist, she placed it under her hair and cautiously followed the large creture.

Apple began to speed up, quickly turning from trot to run and disappearing down through the tunnel as though to escape the Elf's prying eyes. On the other end, the creature burst out from a man-made cave mouth and landed with a splash on a ground that seemed to hold a layer of... Floating, mystical silk... Like a mist, yet also a pool. It had a hint of blue tint to the colour and in some places, one could not see the actual floor beneath it.

Slowing to a walk, Apple made his way over to a nearby tree; of which there were many. It was a forest of gigantic plant-life.

"Which way did she go?" A young man in white cloak asked, with his right hand resting lightly on the side of the large, Antelope-like mammal that walked besides him.

"In there," the creature known as Apple revealed without physical effort; the words flowing naturally into Koken'nin's mind and his alone, over the sound of paws padding against the road.

"Gambit's Bar?" He asked, while peering through one of the windows as he made his way past. He indeed saw The Archive in there, leading him to sigh in relief. "It looks as though your nose has saved the day once again, Apple."

"Indeed, but unfortunately I can't fit through the door and I doubt my presence inside will be welcome. You should go and entertain her for a while, I think I'll take a walk and get some fresh air."

"Very well, Apple, I'll see you in a while," Ko replied, patting the creature on the head and then breaking away to push through the door of the establishment. His attention immediately focused on the girl, he made his way over towards her and then stood by her side, looking for permission to sit. He took this honoured duty very seriously, yet he had never really picked up on the do's and don'ts of etiquette in her presence; he didn't wish to appear rude of course.

"Not as far as I know," he answered. "Would you like me to start bringing them with me on our ventures?"
"I'm sure Apple knows where to get some, he's a lot smarter than I am."

He turned to look around for a moment, after all, maybe they indeed had some in the room and he simply hadn't noticed? A hint of caution could never go awry either, there would always be people after her bloodline and public places were never going to get any safer.

Eventually, he decided to sit down on the stool besides the girl.

Koken'nin kept close to The Archive and ever weary. Her intentions seemed innocent enough and David Malachite seemed a friendly enough man to not immediately suspect. He kept his guard up though, if not because of David, because of the girl herself. He found it hard to trust her, no matter how much he tried.

She had such a vast sum of knowledge, yet surely also the instability of a young teenage girl. Who knew what she would do next?

He let her words sink in for a few seconds, realizing the importance of his own knowledge over hers, lest he go lame in the mind.

"I'm not sure how you know these things, or if you have the gift of foresight, or if you simply have recorded in your mind every single event that has ever, or will ever happen, but I need to ask you to refrain from revealing your predictions for the future. I don't have your mind, I would probably go insane - besides, I don't believe in destiny."

Belief in something that was hidden right in front of ones eyes is usually called denial, but in Koken'nin's he truly had no other choice if he wished to continue to value his sanity.

He took one look at the meal set before him and nodded a little with a "thank you." However, he didn't look particularly pleased with it. Next to the roasted meat and juicy fruits of the Root Lands, hunted, cooked and gathered by his own two hands, this 'processed stuff' appeared rather undesirable.

He took one of the fries, then bit into it hesitantly. "If you see a pickle on my plate, feel free to take it. I'm not entirely sure what one is..."

"No, you do not have to trouble yourself with my needs," he said as he gave a slight tug to pull his hand away from hers. "Besides, you have yours here. It's not the taste I don't like, I'm merely not used to this sort of prepared meal. I can get over it."

He took a large bite out of his burger, chewed, swallowed and then gave her a slightly exaggerated smile to let her know he was perfectly happy with his food.

"Very well, I can't argue with that logic," he said as he left his plate and stood up to turn to the door. "We can go and find Apple, he'll let you ride him if you'd like," he suggested while making his way towards the door to exit the establishment.

Apple leapt from gnarled branch to gnarled branch, the large mammalian creature resembling both deer and wolf darting through the trees at high speeds, while a young man sat upon his back and gripped tightly to his thick, white fur.

Koken'nin wore colourful clothing, and had a sword strapped to his back that could ward off evil and cut without harming. He spurred his friend onwards, then had him land in a small clearing for a short rest.

"We should be getting close, right?" Koken'nin asked. Apple replied, but his voice couldn't be heard, nor did his mouth move.

"I see... Well, we'll stop at the stream further north and then head on."

The crashing caused shock in both companions, and Koken'nin's immediate reaction was to climb aboard Apple, who stood prepared and ready to sprint towards the source of the noise. Never away.

"Apple, what could make that noise in these woods? Trolls? Giants? Humans?"

Apple's voice spoke inside Koken'nin's mind, the tone low and wise beyond the creature's years. "There are very few trolls in this area of the world, and giants would not be able to hide so easily among the trees."

After he finished speaking, Apple began to dart, only a few leaps taking him into the tree-line and another high into the branches capable of supporting their weight.

It took several minutes to make it deep enough to see the source of the commotion and when they did, Apple had to stop in the protection of the trees while they peered down at the gigantic snake-like creature.

"Apple, is that..?"

"Yes, it appears to be a Wyrm. I wasn't aware any still lived."

"The Gigi would love to see this," Koken'nin answered with a grin, before examining the creature in awe.

"Do you see that, Koken'nin?" Apple asked.

A moment later, Koken'nin nodded. "Yeah, I'll go take care of it."

He leapt from Apple, a jumping feat far beyond a normal man that carried him only a few steps away from the tip of the Wyrm's snout (or equivalent). A second leap sent him onto the creature, a hand drawing his Nedake-Ken as he fell so he could strike the black, oozing source of the Wyrm's distress.

Koken'nin pulled back and dropped to the ground with a flip, before smartly twirling and sheathing his blade into the scabbard on his lower back. He bowed to the large Wyrm, it being a creature of the forest and worthy of his respect... Though, that scream that sounded very similar to the noise of a human female did confuse him some.

"So what now, Apple? Do we leave her?" He asked, the scream giving away its potential gender.

"I think that's a good idea, a Wyrm is hardly a thing that needs a comforting hand." Apple's voice resonated, and Imani, being within range, would hear him too.

"I suppose you're right, but that black ooze? That seems like something we should do something about, right?"

"I thought we just did?"
