Kurt Bannon

Kurt seems like an ordinary human in his mid-forties, with gray hair and prominent male pattern baldness. Those in the know, however, will recognize him as a master of getting from place to place by any means necessary.

a character in “The Multiverse”, as played by LawOfTheLand

Groups

The trans-dimensional society of explorers and mapmakers that spend their time exposing the depths of the planes to other travelers.

Description

Kurt's face is weathered from literally years of wandering the highs and lows of the worlds, and dresses in many layers, the most prominent being a brown cloak with an attached hood. He's tall for an old guy, though, managing a respectable five foot eight.

Personality

Kurt has an attitude of "been there, done that" when faced with most brags, because chances are he actually has. However, when it comes to a fight, he rarely holds back.

Equipment

Kurt's most prominent item is a quarterstaff, which usually finds use as a walking stick but also aids in personal defense. His most prominent gear, however, is his research equipment, being a wizard of no small stature, yet somehow he can carry it easily.

History

Growing up the adopted son of a cartographer, Kurt inherited a strong desire to fill in those areas marked as "terra incognita." His research into various spells designed for ease of travel, particularly teleportation, makes most who know of his work place him in high regard.

So begins...

Kurt Bannon walks in, his nose in a book covered with arcane markings from cover to cover, and much of the same is scrawled across the pages.

Kurt Bannon wasn't too sure what was going on at Gambit's, but there was a bigger fluctuation of mana than normal coming from there. Cautiously using a dimension door spell to do a short-range teleport to a place within a couple blocks, the situation was a bit more clear-cut. Some idiot was trying to drag the place down to the Hells with him. This would be one of the more difficult dispels he had attempted in his long life, and it would be time consuming, but his position and distance should mitigate that somewhat.

Kurt Bannon would begin the ritual to sever the tie between this plane and wherever the hells that portal was trying to lead everyone with these words from two blocks away. His body may be slightly past his prime, but you didn't live as long as he had without picking up a few tricks.

Kurt Bannon furrowed his brow even as sweat ran down in in his continued efforts to separate the warp and weft of this Weave from each other, effectively destroying the spell. He had indeed chosen his vantage point wisely: Everyone that was getting up close and personal for this confrontation would have their magics taken out by a successful casting of this disjunction, but he was far enough away that he would be unaffected.

Kurt Bannon was dumbfounded as to the futility of his efforts. This was the ultimate dispel known to mortals, effective even against the mightiest of artifacts, and it was being brushed aside with nary a thought. Something was seriously wrong here, and he would need to investigate later, but right now the situation was too turbulent to risk getting any closer.

Kurt Bannon looked up from a booth near the bar. It was like he had always been there, yet nobody had paid him any attention. His weather-beaten garb seemed to have some extremely stubborn road dust on it, as evidenced by his persistent yet unsuccessful attempts to brush it off.

Kurt Bannon finally sounded like he gave up. Looked like it was time to start talking, get news of the road from the others here. They were a diverse lot, so he was bound to come across something new or exciting. But whom should he talk to...?

Kurt Bannon watched imperiously over the young student as she practiced her art. "Because one should not reach beyond the boundaries of life. That sapling was not merely diseased, but quite dead. But fear not...in the wake of this one death, your fire has released the nutrients trapped in its form back to the soil, thereby enabling new growth. That is the cycle of nature--one must seek to obey it when possible, and maybe give it a little nudge every now and then."

Kurt Bannon shook his head at his new apprentice's assertion. "If you feel good enough about yourself that you can say that, then you might as well tell yourself the opposite. Such prophecies have a way of fulfilling themselves, you know...as of now, I'm still trying to learn where your interests and talents lie. You see? The life of a wizard is one of constant learning!"

Kurt Bannon decided to respect the wards on the establishment for once and teleported just outside the building before walking in. After, of course, being given clearance to do so. "My apologies. I came as soon as I got the news, but apparently I've figured out how to travel faster than gossip."

Kurt Bannon let his weathered face blossom into a smile. "I know, right? I didn't think it was possible either, until I did it. I'm Kurt Bannon...maybe you've seen a few of my treatises on the theory behind teleportation circles in the library? Or have your eyes been too busy gorging themselves on your co-workers, my dear?"

Kurt Bannon thought he sensed the presence of something familiar. Getting a lock on the signal, he teleported to...aw, fuck. Gambit's Bar again? Well, nothing for it. Time to go in. A few old faces, a lot of new faces. It brought a smile to the man's wizened, weather-beaten face. "It's certainly been a while. I've been working on a new book detailing the theory behind a new method of teleportation," he beamed at Rahal.

"Battle magic as it happens." He said, rather amused. "Though I'm just teaching him control, for the most part. And to avoid some of the more chaotic magics out there. Not that it works well, coming from my family."

Among certain circles, his family was well too known for incredibly corrosive magics. He never did tell people his last name entirely because of that. Then Kurt popped in.

"Kurt! Hello. I look forward to the read. It's always interesting hearing the latest theories, even if I do still prefer my version of travel."

"I look forward to the money from the book deal. If it gets adapted to a textbook, I'll have enough to start my next project regarding flying machines." Kurt grinned at Rahal before turning to the rest of the crowd. Yes, the place had changed quite a bit. But the magical aura was largely unchanged, and that's how he had found the place again.

"Why mundane transport, you ask? Well, I can't teleport to a place I don't know well. So to explore new lands, I have to hoof it, a practice that has grown more cumbersome in my advanced age. So I was thinking of inventing something to help me get around while I still had a head on my shoulders. But enough about me, how have you been? Surely you're old and experienced enough to have taken an apprentice by now?"

Kurt turned to Simon, his eyes lighting up with the excitement of learning something. "Into a dragon? That's fascinating! Into a creature of such power...and with such precision! Please, you must tell me how you managed it!" Notably absent was the question of how he managed to escape. He had the ball-point pen and spiral notebook covered in arcane symbols and formulas already out and ready to take down the process. Perhaps he could ferret out the basic principles of this new technique.

He proceeded to ignore Rahal. Of course. It was his special interest, after all. But as an afterthought, he turned back to the other wizard. "I'll get back to you in a minute, I simply must find out how this guy teleported into a dragon's stomach!"

"Ah, so probability manipulation? Hm. Risky, but I suppose against a dragon one must take such a chance. Thank you for your insight, and look for my new book soon to be in stores and libraries." He waved to the departing couple...apparently the mysterious nature of this place had whisked them away. Which is why Kurt had decided to use the door. Whether or not they received the gesture, eh, not his problem.

Back to Rahal. "Sorry about that. Anyway, to have two MCU operatives in such close proximity...something's afoot. Want to tell me over drinks, or get right to it?"

"Make that two. Easy on the vodka...I, ah, don't get out much," Kurt added as he went over some of his notes. As if he was...proofreading them? "And wow, I didn't know that about you, Rahal. That's really cool. But let's leave the comparative mythology to the experts on the subject...you had something to tell me, I believe."

Kurt Bannon seemed thoroughly confused. "Young lady, if I may impart upon you a certain piece of my hard-won wisdom? Always go out of your way to be polite. You never know who you might be talking to, to say nothing of the power of first impressions leading to favors down the road. Your suggestion of a bar fight is both uncouth and undesirable."

Kurt Bannon nodded. "A capital idea. With your power and my knowledge, we might be able to beat this thing. Oftentimes the hardest part about lifting a curse is figuring out how it might be lifted. Oh, and if the young nymph still wants a fight," he added, gesturing to Vanessa, "then I suggest she buy herself a ticket to the next Arena match."
