Name: Kyran Mistveil
Age: 19
Race: Human

Abilities:

Primal Magic: Primal Magic is an incredibly spiritual and raw magic. Where arcane magic is a science, a directed tool, primal magic is an art that can sweep you up with it and take on a life of its own. With his training primarily focused on elemental manipulation, Kyran's attunement to the natural world has been both aided him with and been enhanced by his mastery of Primal Magic. Though he is capable of utilising all the elements, Kyran struggles with the usage of fire, as it is so opposite to his nature - destructive and angry to his conservation and peace.

Fighting Expertise: A trained fighter, Kyran is well practised and capable with his quarter-staff. He is also incredibly agile, aided by the element of wind, and sure-footed with aid from earth.

Equipment:
  • Quarter-staff
  • White Great WolfStag, Narin

So begins...

The sounds of the wolves and their elven companion did not go unheard in the peaceful forest - a short distance away a young man lifted his head from his lake-side meditation at the laughing and yipping. Curious, he rose from his cross-legged seating and began to make his way towards the clearing the sounds of activity originated from.

Remaining silent and wary, he paused at the edge, concealed in the trees - he knew that the slightest sound would alert the wolves, even if he also knew his scent was suitably masked to prevent the forest's predators (and prey) from detecting him that way. He wasn't so worried about the wolves, they were predictable, but the elf -- all the two-legs were to some extent unpredictable and rash, including he himself.

The elf didn't seem like a likely foe in that moment, however, rolling around with his animal companions. Kyran had good experiences with elves, they respected the forests. Perhaps he would have company this afternoon.

Though far from a master of magic, Kyran was well practised in noticing the smallest of changes in his environment, and the trail of magic was one such change. The young man frowned, wondering if he had been detected, and decided to take his chances.

Stepping out from the trees at the edge of the clearing, he walked into view of the elf, watching for the reactions of the wolves to gauge the situation's volatility. "Greetings." Kyran hesitated for a moment after speaking, as if thinking over his words carefully, "I do not mean to intrude upon your privacy, I know many seek the forest for its peace and isolation, but it is rare to see anyone with as firm a bond with one wolf as you have with four. I am intrigued."

Kyran's eyes narrowed as he realised his mistake. "Oh. I see. You are not what you appear to be."

The youth suppressed a grimace - necromancy left a foul taste in his mouth, its taint did no good to any realm or life. "Kadron. It is not on me to pass judgment on how you choose to live, but let it be known that I do not ... approve, of your art. Meaningless from one stranger to another, but it will not sit unspoken."

He made no move to bow himself, but nodded his head tersely. "My name is Kyran."

Kyran did not move as Kadron approached, but he visibly tensed for a moment before forcing himself to relax. "I live here. My family lived here, once. In a sense, my family lives here now. In return for the hospitality of the forest and the friendship of its creatures, I protect it from harm."

Scowling, Kyran shook his head in disgust. "I did not mean it in that sense, and regardless, you should know better than to offer such a thing."

The shaman continued to scowl as Kadron laughed. It was obvious he was uncomfortable, and certainly not amused.

Kyran lifted his hand to remove Kadron's from his chest, "Opposite indeed. Like I said, it is not on me to judge how you live. That does not mean your art sits well with me. I do not hold anything against you yourself - we are still merely strangers, my view of you, that being aside from your magic, has yet to take shape."

"No person is ever simple," Kyran said, "Where animals are predictable and reliable, people are complicated and multifaceted. There is more to you or I than meets the eye, than what first impressions we give."

The shaman shook his head, "People are difficult to comprehend. They do not work the way of most things."

"Not entirely," Kyran replied, frowning, "You say you have no hopes or desires, and yet you are sapient enough to wish for entertainment and enjoyment. You have formed an attachment to your .. companions. You do not seem to me a hollow being such as you describe."

"A life free from responsibility is certainly an enviable one, but..." Kyran shook his head, "I am afraid I do not think I can understand fully. A life spent between one purpose and another forever seems... incomplete, to my mind."

"I have run with wolves before," Kyran smiled faintly, "Though not in the manner you describe - away from them. They and many other creatures in the forest call me brother. They know me, and I them."

"Quite a noisy ascent," a voice from several branches higher in an adjacent tree commented, "If unarguably efficient."

The voice's origin, when Fae looked for it, would be seen to be a young man just shy of twenty years of age. Clad in an open robe-jacket and a pair of tied baggy trousers, his green eyes looked down on the half-gargoyle with a mixture of surprise and amusement. By all appearances, he seemed to be human, aside from the tips of his ears that poked through his messy brown hair, which were distinctly wolf-like. His eyes had a feral quality to them too, but it was softened by the smile on his face.

"I haven't seen you around here before," he commented, swinging around on his branch with seeming disregard for the precariousness of his perch to face her. "But it's a big forest. I might just have been elsewhere when you were here before. You certainly seem hard to miss."

Raising an eyebrow at Fae's jump to the ground, Kyran shook his head before pushing himself off of the branch. He dropped downwards, slowing at the last moment as he landed on a cushion of air to set himself down on the ground lightly. "You're never really alone in a place like this," he noted, "There are little eavesdroppers everywhere - birds, bugs... most people don't really care what they think of them though. The gossip you can pick up from morning birdsong is astounding, really."

At Fae's question, Kyran smiled, "I could be dangerous, if I wanted to be, but I'm certainly not hostile. Are you used to potential attackers having a friendly conversation with you before striking?"

"Do I look like the kind of person to eat you alive?" Kyran raised an eyebrow, "I stay away from the city, so I don't really know much about it other than what people have told me." The young man lifted his own hand to Fae's, shaking it slightly awkwardly. "I had to be taught that gesture the first time someone walked through here," he admitted. "Where I'm from it's more customary to bow."

And bow he did, putting his hands together and tilting forwards, "My name is Kyran."

Kyran raised an eyebrow, "With the type of people I see coming and going from there, I'm surprised they even notice it at all," he said, shrugging, "I don't really pay much attention to what race people are. I was trained to be able to appreciate life as separate from outward appearance or biology, so I see more than just the surface of a person."

He smiled, "You're certainly very different to most people, but there's nothing inherently wrong with that. I've known persecution myself, albeit more the result of a lost war than a circumstance of birth."

The boy gave Fae an odd look, before sighing and shrugging again, "If you want. It's hardly a tale of heroism and legend. It's just reality."

Kyran's eyes drifted towards the canopy of trees overhead as he spoke, thoughts going back to his earlier life, "It was only a year or so ago. My village was built in a forest, constructed around the trees hundreds if not thousands of years ago. The stories said that the founders of the village were led there by the fey to act as guardians of the forest for when they were gone. They gave a select few of the founders the secrets of magic, before leaving. I don't know how much of that is true and how much is just fairy tale, but what matters is that myself and another child of the village were selected to be trained in that same magic by the surviving of the previous two. Towards the end of their lives, the practitioners of the magic would select two promising children to train to take their place as the guardians of the village. As far as living memory went back, there had been little need for it - the village hadn't been threatened and nor had the forest."

Kyran grimaced, "But that all changed towards the end of our training. When I was seventeen, I discovered on a trip to the forest border that outsiders were coming with machines to destroy the forest. They wanted the land for their livestock and the lumber for their buildings and furnishings. They didn't realise the lives they would be destroying - or didn't care. My master tried to negotiate with their leader but returned unsuccessful. We fought against them, broke their machines and drove their soldiers away, but they came back with their own magic and more soldiers. My village was destroyed, my family and my master killed, and I barely escaped with my life."

His expression grim, Kyran looked down at Fae again, "It's not a pleasant memory. But I get by. The forest was vast, even if the part that was my home was destroyed, I moved on to find a new home. I cannot replace the people I lost, so I live alone. Not alone, really, I have the animals and the trees for company. The forest shares my loss and offers comfort."

"You can if you want," Kyran said, "But one day you're going to have to stop running, you know. You can't be ashamed of what you are forever. Even if you say you aren't, the fact that you hide is proof to the contrary. It's not for other people to judge you, but for you to be proud in the face of that judgement."

The young man smiled, "Life is beautiful in all its forms, from a swan to a toad."

Kyran turned towards the new voice, raising an eyebrow, "It's not often I see two passersby in one day. The forest is busy today."

Kyran shrugged, "Do as you wish," he said, "It is not your fault that she ran. I imagine she will run a lot more before she realises that it is hurting her."

The young man paused, placing one hand to his mouth and whistling sharply. He turned back to the new arrival then, "What brings you to the forest? Solace, or something else?"

"My name is Kyran," Kyran replied, "I live in the forest, as something of a protector to it. Though thus far I have proved less than effective at my job." He shook his head, "But that is irrelevant to you."

Kyran sat, crossing his legs and leaning against the trunk of a tree, "You do not have to tell me who you are if you do not want to. You are obviously afraid of something, or someone. I assure you I mean you no harm, and even the more predatory denizens of the forest will not harm you so long as I am here."

Kyran nodded, "Here and there. I travel a lot, but I always dwell in the forest - sometimes a different forest, but here for now." The youth smiled as the sound of padding footfalls became audible nearby, and from the undergrowth broke a large white creature - what looked like a hybrid between a wolf and a stag, a canine face with antlers - about the height of a man. The Wolfstag padded over to Kyran where it nuzzled at him affectionately in return for a stroke on the neck.

Kyran looked over to Sebastian then, predicting he would likely be a little unnerved by the presence of the large creature, "Don't worry, Narin won't hurt you. He's a peaceful puppy at heart." His words were reinforced as the large creature settled down beside him, head on its large paws.
