A figure in the distance was out collecting mushrooms for a tea when movement was seen out of the corner of their eyes. A smirk touched their face and the person turned toward the woman against the tree trunk as well as the dragon. Tucking the white mushroom into a satchel belted around their hips, the person jovially continued for the woman.

“‘Ho there!” the androgynous voice called out, muffled slightly by the cowl worn over their face. It was indiscernible if the person had been male or female. “Tha’ be a lovely dragon you ‘ave there. ‘Aven’t seen one o’the like inna long time. He yours?”

The woman would not be able to see it but a smile was on the unknown person’s face. It could be seen in their eyes and the way they crinkled around the corners. And it was only their eyes which were able to be seen. A heavy wool cloak draped from their shoulders with a gold clasp to hold it closed. There was no chest to be seen in order to tell if a man or woman stood before her either.

Lapis was completely genderless even when she pulled down her hood. The mask even ran over her hair to hide that as well. Only green eyes stared at the woman sitting against the tree.

“Oh, I guess tellin’ ye my name would be a good thing, eh,” Lapis said before giving a bow much like how a beanstalk would bend in a hurricane storm. “The name is Lazuli, ya know, like th’stone but not th’stone.” Lazuli’s gaze shifted down to Taylor’s hand on her pommel which made Lazuli look around nervously.

“You won’t be needin’ tha’. I not gonna ‘rut ya. Not even got a weapon on me t’all,” Lazuli said before opening her cloak. All that could be seen was leather clad legs and the herbologist satchel attached to her belt.

“Jus’ came to see yer dragon s’all. No’ often a person gets ta see one up close without gettin’ burnt. Las’ time I did see one, well, s’why I be wearin’ a mask now.” Lazuli pointed to her face.

Lazuli nodded in great relief when the woman removed her hand from the pommel of her blade. Taking in a long breath of air, she exhaled it in a great rush. “Righ’, righ’. Thanks fer no’ guttin’ me. Do appreciate it. No’ seen much kind people abou’ this place since I go’ ‘ere. An’ aye, I am a ‘erbologist. I know all th’plants, n’leaves, n’shrooms, n’everthin’ else abou’ green things.”

Green eyes watched as Taylor nursed her shoulder and listened to her wish. It was obvious that the woman may have had something wrong with her body.

“Do ye be havin’ an ill, lady? Lazuli kin fix ye righ’ up, if need be,” Lazuli said, shuffling towards Taylor and wringing her gloved hands together.

Lapis Lazuli pulled her gloves off of her hands but where most would expect feminine hands, Lazuli’s were worn from hard work and callused. They could have either been a woman’s hands or a man’s hands, at least without further inspection.

“Let’s ‘ave a’look see ‘ere,” Lazuli said before taking Taylor’s arm into her hands gently. She inspected it closely, bringing her face near enough to see all the minor details. It was poorly stitched and with some fabric that may have just come from a tunic.

“Ye did this yerself, didn’ya?” Lazuli asked before tutting her tongue as if scolding a child. “Well, we gonna ‘ave ta clean it, stitch it up propa’ an’ then put a poultice o’er it. Mhmmm. ‘Course, lest ye want it ta jus’ fall off after festerin’. Migh’ die ‘fore tha’ though.”

Lazuli brought her gaze back up to lock onto Taylor’s.

A snort came at Taylor’s statement of how she preferred to die. If it were up to her, Lazuli would die old and in her sleep, but things didn’t always end up the way she hoped.

“No need to be thankin’ t’all. Jus’ doin’ my part to make th’world a lil’ better than ’tis now,” Lazuli said with a nod of her head. Releasing Taylor’s arm, the woman reached into her cloak, and pulled out a bag that wasn’t the satchel attached to her hip. This one had come from somewhere else inside the navy-colored drape.

“‘Ere will be jus’ fine, jus’ fine. Always walk ‘round with some supplies n’case I get m’self into trouble. I ‘ave a nasty knack fer tastin’ things tha’ shouldn’t be tasted lest you want to be sick.”

Lazuli set the satchel on the ground and opened it, revealing many small glass vials of potions. Some were more than odd with swirling and dancing colors, others were void of light, one of them shined like it was pure light, and another was as red as blood, among many curious vials. They each clinked as Lazuli moved them around. Eventually she found the one she needed accompanied by a small pair of scissors usually used to collect small samples of leaves.

“’Tis no’ gonna feel good. Kin ye take pain, lass?”

Lazuli nodded while looking over the various scars over Taylor’s shoulders. A seasoned warrior it seemed was sitting in front of her. It was something to respect and gave even more reason for Lazuli to patch her back up.

especially since she held a sword of power.

The concealed woman sat down unceremoniously then scooted up to Taylor’s side. Lazuli immediately set to work with cutting the poor stitches away with deceivingly lithe and gentle fingers while chatting about various plants. When the stitches were all gone, the contents of the vial was poured over Taylor’s wound and rubbed in with Lazuli’s fingers.

It would feel as if Taylor’s own dragon were breathing down her arm and then through her blood stream. It burned without fire but the pain was the same.

Lazuli prepared to act if it were necessary.

“Oh jus’ give it a moment, mhmm. Th’pain will fade away n’yer arm will go numb fer some time yet,” Lazuli said while watching the infection dribble out from the wound. It appeared as if whatever was inside the vial not only cleansed the wound but ejected the bad goop out of Taylor’s arm as well.

A handkerchief was taken from inside Lazuli’s cloak and pressed against the wound while the woman’s other hand rummaged around for a small parcel inside the satchel.

“Th’arm will be useless fer a few days but tha’s better than bein’ dead, I s’pose, n’you said it yerself too,” Lazuli commented before releasing her grip on the other woman’s arm. She went to stringing silk thread through a needle.

“‘least you don’ ‘ave to worry ‘bout no infection, neither. Potion does that well enough on it’s own. Like I says, stays in yer blood fer a few days.” Lazuli nodded as if thinking to herself and eventually the needle was threaded through Taylor’s skin to mend it up almost expertly.

“Aye, most women do do beautiful work, lass,” Lazuli said in reply, giving away her gender for the first time. “Strange enough though it weren’t my lady moth’r tha’ taught me but m’fath’r.” The woman’s eyes narrowed for a moment and concentrated on her stitching.

When it was all complete, Lazuli fetched out a soft leaf and bound it over the wound. She nodded at her fine work and then went rummaging through the parcel of vials again.

“N’case ye get into trouble again, I ‘ave something’ that’ll do ye some good,” Lazuli commented before pulling out a glass vial filled with an unattractive color to it. It almost looked like someone’s vomit.

“Don’ look too good n’don’t taste too good neither but it’ll help if ye get anoth’r wound like tha’ one but on’y fer a short while, ye hear?” Lazuli held out the vial for Taylor to take.

“Nay, lass, nay. Nothin’ you can do fer me. Jus’ pay someone th’kindness in return when someone needs it, even if ye don’ like ‘em well enough,” Lazuli said while tucking away her things. She rose not moments later and perched her hands on her hips to give the dragon another look over.

“I hear tha’ golden apples be good fer dragons n’makin’ ‘em grow fast’r,” Lazuli said before turning and pointing toward the tree line. “There’s a grove o’em in there, not a few leagues inside. Ye can’t miss ‘em. They glow brigh’ n’such things.”

Bending over low once more, Lazuli gave Taylor a bow before turning on heel and leaving without another word. She had places to be and things to see and herbs to collect for her tea.

A cloaked figure walked straight into the room looking around at the walls and ceilings. Coming to a brief stop, the person reached up underneath the deep hood to scratch at the top of their head. The woman looked around again while the hand dropped to cup her chin thoughtfully—a chin that was masked by a white cowl. Nothing but a thin strip of flesh around green eyes was able to be seen. Every inch of flesh was covered by either leather or cotton fabric.

Lapis Lazuli walked further into the room and finally spotted two individuals speaking with each other.

“Hello,” the woman called out jovially, bouncing up on the balls of her feet and giving a large wave to signal that someone was standing there. “I seem to be a little lost!”

“No,” Lapis Lazuli said while approaching the other two. “Not a friend of his, ‘fraid. Never seen him before in my life. I
well, woke up in a chamber filled with a swamp and some very unfriendly crocodiles,” the woman commented with an embarrassed laugh. Lapis held her hands out to her sides as if to say that she were unarmed and not meaning to fight anyone.

“I guess that is the last time I fall asleep looking for a particular fungus. If I would have known that I was just going to wake up in some random place
Lapis Lazuli by the way!” The woman held out a gloved hand for them to shake if they pleased, whomever went for it first.

Lapis Lazuli was happy to shake the man's hand even as armored as it was before releasing Adriaan and looking at the other man. "You must be Lerot. Very nice to meet you both," Lapis interjected before anyone could speak further.

The woman nodded and shuffled over toward the straw and abandoned wood. Gathering up a few pieces in her hands, she paid no attention to the other two but concentrated on making a small fire. While they were talking, Lapis Lazuli was going to make herself some tea.

Lapis looked over at her shoulder to Adriaan and then down at the wood in her hands. Her eyes cast up to the ceiling once more and then she made a small ‘oh’ sound before the wood and straw clattered back down onto the ground.

“If you can’t even start a fire, I don’t even want to know how you survive in this room
‘especially with no tea,” Lapis Lazuli said while digging around in her cloak for a flask.

“At least not hot tea.” She tutted her tongue.

The unguarded sword was seen by Lapis Lazuli and she gave it a little nudge with her foot. After that, the woman didn’t appear much interested in it. She continued toward a wall and started to examine it closely as if looking for something.

The woman plucked something from the wall and tucked it into the herbologist satchel attached to her belt and whistled.

“Gotcha, little demon,” Lapis said before allowing a triumphant laugh to herself.

The woman ended up standing near them with her arms crossed beneath her breast. She was highly disinterested in their conversation and just stared at them but it wasn’t at them, more so through them as if caught in a daydream.

Lapis Lazuli was remembering her encounter with a poor woman who needed much help in being re-stitched and the dragon that accompanied her.

The woman shuddered. She hated dragons.

Standing at the door was Lapis Lazuli, patiently waiting for Lerot with kind eyes. It sounded as if their conversation was coming to a close but she had not been paying too much attention. The woman was far more concerned with the rare herb that she had just acquired which could make a person lose their voice. Collecting strange plants had always been her hobby and her passion. It was nice to have been able to satisfy one of her missing pieces in her collection.

The woman sipped from her flask while watching the two.

Lapis choked on her drink and shifted from foot to foot in a nervous fashion. Suddenly she had smelled like alcohol instead of tea. She eyed Lerot for a moment as if waiting for him to say something bad about her drinking.

“Shh. Not a word to the monk. I hear they don’t like people who drink the drink,” Lapis said while eyeing the monk where he laid. She held out the flask for Lerot in offering while explaining what she was doing there.

“Well, going back would be nice. I was searching for a particular mushroom that cured lice. My entire town is infested with it so we need a cure. But I ran into someone
” Beneath her cowl the woman’s face screwed up and her eyes narrowed.

“
I don’t really remember what happened after that aside from almost being chomped to bits by an angry crocodile.”

“Are you not listening to the words that are coming out of my mouth,” Lapis snapped at him before letting out a hearty laugh. It appeared that the drink was working quick in her system. Her knees wobbled for a moment and she almost fell forward but caught herself.

The woman’s eyes went back to the other monk for a moment and she happened to notice all the feathers lying about.

“One second,” Lapis said before moving toward Adriaan but she stopped and turned to face Lerot. “Here hold this. I need to go collect a few feathers. Feathers from a person are a rare thing to get a hold of,” Lapis said while pushing the flask into Lerot’s hand. “I don’t want him to see me with it.”

She turned toward Adriaan and then back to Lerot.

“By the way, after this, we should grab a drink. You’re not too bad looking and I don’t mind having a drink with a good looking man. Not at all,” Lapis said with a wink. She made off in an awkward walk back to the monk and started picking up random feathers.
